Review: The Dessert Island Discs series continues with yet more arch remixes from across the disco and boogie spectrum. Bubbles The Pimp kicks off the A side with a tasteful treatment of Gil Scott Heron's "Winter In America," which gets rustled up into a sweet and sassy house number with a cheeky acid b-line underneath. Nelly Wilson whips up a storm on the tightly clipped, peak time-oriented "Trapped & Confused". Pierre Pressure's "Love & Beyond" takes it easy on the B side with plenty of fluttering synth wobbles to offset the choppy funk of the guitar - it's a cosmically enhanced floor burner to get you all astral under the collar.
Prince Dred & Bunny Sigler - "Freak Like Me" (DJ Dan mix) (7:06)
DJ Homewrecker - "New World In My View" (Saison remix) (6:06)
DJ Mes - "90s Groove" (6:18)
Rescue - "Here & Now" (6:49)
Review: Of the many threads to the excellent Oakland-based deep house stable Guesthouse, the Super Secret Squirrel Trax series is one of the surefire highlights. Loaded with choice operators locked into some serious West Coast funk, things kick off in fine style with the infectious party starting antics of Prince Dred and Bunny Sigler, who get the remix treatment from DJ Dan on "Freak Like Me". Saison takes a more mainline approach when reworking DJ Homewrecker, while DJ Mes is in heads down mode on the tracky but addictive "90s Groove". Rescue's "Here & Now" serves up a cheeky R&B re-rub for the peak time crowd.
Review: Essential repress! Tomas Bangalter's stone cold classic Roule 12" Trax On Da Rocks makes a return. The five tracks on offer - "On Da Rocks", "Roule Boule", "What To Do", "Outrun" and "Ventura" - have acquired legendary status, standing as sublime examples of the rough, raw end of the filter-soaked French house sound. Some 17 years since they were first released, these tracks have lost none of their madcap brilliance; if this isn't already a cherished part of your record collection, here's your chance.
Review: Chicago veterans Glenn Underground and Boo Williams are old studio buddies, having first collaborated on vinyl way back in 1995. For their latest hook-up, they've come up with a new joint alias: Guboo. As you'd expect from such experienced and high quality house producers, the three tracks on offer are top notch. They begin with a superb chunk of swinging disco-house, where spacey synth solos, rich chords and select spoken word snippets dance around a killer disco groove. After delivering a chunkier, vocal-free dub of the (track 2), they offer a deeper, more stripped-back interpretation on the flip, allowing greater space for the groove, disco strings and spacey synths to do their thing.
The Klub Family - "When I Fall In Love" (feat Sybil - Knee Deep Disco club mix) (6:35)
Whitney Houston - "I'm Every Woman" (Clivilles & Cole House mix 1) (10:43)
Review: The glorious Defected affiliated label land party Glitterbox continues to bring back some of the colour, gloss and glamour that made early house and disco so great with this second edition of their Hotter Than Fire series. Melvo Baptiste once again selects a load of fantastic tracks that brim with soul, diva vocals and timeless basslines. Highlights are plentiful throughout, but our picks of the bunch are "Chic Mystique" awashed with serious 90s New York vibes, all out Soul Train groover "Gotta Keep On Trying" by Tenderness and Jungle Brothers who bring some of their street wise hip house styles to the throwback "What 'U' Waitin' 4?".
