Review: Archeo Recordings bring us some more Balearic Italian treasure here with some gold initially recorded in Bologna almost two decades ago. It's a collaboration between friends Bottin and Lucio Dalla that has never before been on vinyl. 'Lunedi Cinema' was an ident that played before Monday night movies on of one of the main Italian TV channels for many years. This electronic version includes the Martedi Mix from 2008, a Minibar Bonus Track and also a mix by pioneering Italian dream house dons Leo Mas & Fabrice with a Bottin dub sealing the deal. It's a superb package of real Italo music history.

It Makes A Difference/Rushing (Danny Krivit Edits)

Kim English - "It Makes A Difference" (Danny Krivit & Kyle Smith remix - Danny Krivit 7" edit) (5:39)
Loni Clark - "Rushing" (Mood II Swing dub - Danny Krivit 7" edit) (5:31)
Review: Danny Krivit is currently known as one of the music community's greatest purveyors of top quality disco & house as he continues to perform regularly before sold-out audiences around the world. With his unique ear for what works on the dancefloor he has also become known as "King of the Re-edit." Danny has a deep connection to Kim English's "It Makes A Difference" release on Nervous Records from 2006. Krivit worked with writer Kyle Smith on the remixes that originally made this tune an anthem at his 718 Sessions parties as well as one of the highlights of club nights from Tokyo to New York to London that appreciate quality soulful house. The B-side is Danny's re-edit of one of the most famed dubs from the Nervous catalogue as well as for the producers Mood II Swing. Upon its release in 1993 this dub emerged as one of the defining sounds of summer 1993 at Ministry Of Sound which had just recently opened the year before. The "rushing rushing rushing" hook is well knownby golden era of house afficianados around the world and he does an amazing job bringing this essential hook.

Oden & Fatzo X Camden Cox - "Lady Love" (4:55)
Review: Though mostly known for their colourful and soul-drenched house, Defected can also do more physical and tech-leaning sounds as exemplified on this new EP. It features a mix of new school tastemakers with Jansons opening up with the old school breaks and bars of 'Hypnotic' (feat Dope Earth Alien) then American star LP Giobbi layers up the freewheeling melodies and punchy drum loops on 'Giodisco.' Sam Divine gets for a deep and driving house sound on 'Take My Hand' (feat Josh Barry) and Oden & Fatzo X Camden Cox close things out with a more light and airy vocal sound on 'Lady Love.' Some useful variation here.

Laroye - "Best Girlfriends" (6:35)
BRS - "Night To Remember" (5:56)
Mike 'Agent X' Clark - "My Journey Thru Africanism" (6:23)
Review: Here two of Situationism's compilation strands combine on one 12": 2up 2down, which focuses on high-grade deep house, and the In The Bag series of floor-friendly catalogue favourites. There's naturally plenty to get the blood pumping throughout, from the thrillingly off-kilter Afro-house rhythms of Mike Agent X Clark's 'My Journey Thru Africanism', and Javontte's sensational 2021 single 'Soul People', to the liquid jazz-funk/deep house fusion of BRS' fantastic 'A Night To Remember' - all rubbery bass guitar, huggable chords, glistening guitars, fluttering flutes and swinging beats - and the driving, gospel-influenced peak-time brilliance of Laroye's 'Best Girlfriends (Soulful Mix)'. To cite an old cliche, this genuinely is "all killer, no filler".

Review: KC Lights is a runaway success story from Glasgow's house music scene, and his stock has only risen since signing with the mighty Toolroom in 2020 for the knockout single 'Girl'. Since then he's perfected his craft in working with strong vocalists to create a chart-ready, crossover kind of house music that speaks to sunny days, and that's explicitly spelt out on this latest hit-in-the-making. 'Better Days' features Lapsley on vocals calling out to life's peaks and troughs, leading to good times on the horizon. It's just the right kind of sentiment to step into the new year with, and this one will fast-track you to summer quicker than you can book a ticket to Ibiza.

Channeling a heady cocktail of inspirations from New York to Lagos, the supergroup easily moves through different styles in quick succession, from uptempo boogie to mega-ploddy dub. BBQ Ribs (Oddphonic remix) (5:52)
Review: Tommy Largo is a big deal in the world of jacking house and here he lands on Greenhouse Recordings with plenty of evidence to support that. His sound comes steeped with Southern influences on opener 'BBQ Ribs' with its noodling jazz chords and spoken word mutterings making for a lively atmosphere over funky beats. The Jam Funk Remix has a Chicago bump to it with the jazzy keys left in place over well-swung drums. 'On No Not Again' hints at new jack swing with its steamy sax lines and effortlessly catchy groove before 'BBQ Ribs' (Oddphonic remix) closes out with the deepest sound of the lot, perfect for when the sun has gone down and the party heads indoors.

Lay Far - "That Dream" (Thatmanmonkz Gon' Git You Sucka remix)
Review: Lay-Far's critically acclaimed debut album "So Many Ways" which took him worldwide gets a friendly treatment from the global music family! In the first installment of the remix series we have artistic versions from Atjazz, Inkswel, Jonny Miller and Thatmanmonkz! Martin Iveson kicks off the EP with a masterpiece of a remix for one of the highlights of the album - electronic ballad "Stand Up" featuring Pete Simpson. When the strings come in you realize - it's Atjazz at his best - conscious boogie for the soul! We believe it may easily become future classics! Inkswel's version of "When I'm Seeing You" is soaked in the warm sound of distorted drum machines and tape delays. Be warned - this heavy-hitter can actually damage your speakers! The B-side opens with the deep and sophisticated afro house of Jonny Miller whose remix of "Summer Vacation" immediately teleports you to the open air party in the Adriatic Sea coast. Last but not the least we have Sheffield's own Thatmanmonkz revisiting "That Dream". Inspired heavily by classic blaxploitation movies, Shadeleaf Music label boss comes up with a dynamic soundtrack for the imaginary chase scene. Badass!

Love Story (Vs Finally) (Paul Woolford 2023 extended mix) (5:43)
Love Story (7:52)
Review: 'Love Story' is one of the most classic tunes in all of house music. It was written by Layo & Buschwaka who heard the original 'Finally' by Kings of Tomorrow and wanted to tweak it to their own ends so mashed it up with further samples from Dave, Nina Simone and Tati Quebra-Barraco. It's a rousing, heartwarming dancefloor trip of the highest order and who better to remix it than the always on fire Paul Woolford. His extended 2023 edit brings all the best bits to the fore and ensures we will be hearing this one all summer long. No complaints here.

'Shimmy Shimmy Ya' kicks off with the iconic Ol Dirty Bastard slurs over raw beats for a jacker dup party explosion. Then comes the much more smooth and silky sounds of 'Everywhere' with its feelgood melodies and catchy hooks and last of all is 'Broken Wings', a deep and dusty house cut lit up with sentimental 80s pop vocals that are nostalgic and fun in this new context.

Review: Toronto label Selections has become a firm favourite with house heads and now starts a nice sideline with its Special Edition 2023 series. This one welcomes Lea Lisa with her track 'Conversation Between Us' (Heide Club Mix) which is straight up underground house for the heads. Then comes an unreleased Javonntte remix of Evenn's 'One For Love' that pairs things back to raw dub essentials. Dan Only's 'Love Saturates' then gets a fine and formerly unreleased remix by Italy's Black Loops that has pristine drum programming and a fine bassline. Released in 1999, the infectious track blends pulsating beats with catchy synth melodies that create an irresistible dancefloor vibe. Lee's silky and innocent vocals infuse the song with energy and dynamism and a cheeky, playful feel that is very easy to sing back, which is in part what helped to make it a staple in clubs and parties worldwide. Review: The charitable people over at Slow To Speak are always generous, reissuing just about everything that was good in the 90s NY era, but for re-releasing Cherie Lee's "Love Me Or Leave", they probably deserve a medal. Four mixes here, starting with the Fly mixx - a feel-good house track containing those infectious lyrics we love so much. On the B, the drums are seriously garaged-up and those vocals chopped right down; and lastly, the Klub mix is still a garage-tinged beat but sparser and more widescreen - probably the most alluring of the three...

But if you need to know more, on this 12" for Z Records he's taking on the Russian band Leonid & Friends and their cover of 'Street Player' by Chicago. Of course the original was an iconic joint made even more classic by 'that' Bucketheads tune, and you can hear DFP having fun nodding to that iconic bit of 90s chart-topping house in these deadly versions. If you like your disco house fierce and fiery but still delivered with finesse, this record is all you need.

Review: Bengoa's Athens-based-label B2 Recordings has impressed over its first nine releases. The 10th is another fine one to mark the mini-milestone and it comes from Lex, who was last on the label a couple of years ago. His star has only continued to rise since then with fresh beats on the likes of Samosa and Leng and now his brilliant disco house fusions find more new heights with 'Fast Jags.' This is a cosmic workout that slowly builds on nice loose drums with astral pads circling around you and keys withering in sci-fi fashion. Bengoa offers up a raw edit that brings some deeper jazz keys and tumbling bongos and Felipe Gordon's Deep Funk remix ups the house vibes with a nice thumping groove.

Review: Chicago house great Lil Louis really nailed it when he wrote 'Cub Lonely' back in 1992 with his group The World. It was taken from their album A Journey With The Lonely and has lead vocals by Joi Cardwell that helped it become an instant club smash. All these years later it always gets a big reaction on the floor which is why it has now been reissued by Epic complete with a series of remixes. The I'm On The Guest List mix is the one with the wonky sax lines and steamy vocals, the instrumental is paired back and more club-ready then DJ Pierre's Afro club mix bringing some big and freewheeling synth energy. The Bellbottoms & Platforms mix is a subtle tweak and then the most raw of the lot is the Radically Lonely mix to close down.

Review: Whether she likes it or not, Sophie Lloyd will always be known for the unfeasibly uplifting gospel disco-meets-gospel-house anthem 'Calling Out'. That was released five years ago and ever since, she's struggled to embrace it's shadow. With 'Angels By My Side', Lloyd seems to have embraced this, delivering another fine gospel-powered number that inhabits a similar sonic space while being different enough to avoid accusations of treading water. It's genuinely good, too, with Pauline Taylor delivering superb lead vocals over a hybrid gospel disco/stomping gospel sound hybrid full of Hammond organ licks, booming bass guitar, piano house riffs and stirring orchestration. In other words, it's another anthem in waiting.

These are likely to have an even more explosive impact this summer when people have been stopped from dancing so long, especially when they're as pure and joyous as this one from Loods. The track was something of a sleeper hit, but its enduring legacy has been bolstered by its many remixes, not least one by Joey Negro. This EP keeps the fire lit in the form of two remixes by Italian producer Moplen, who just as much as Negro holds the song near and dear. So, if you're after a touch of dancefloor opulence, this series in which he breathes new life into everything from yacht disco gems to platinum-selling rock anthems could be for you. Lowres - "Slishish"
Erik Ellmann - "Tribal Disco"
Review: The sixth salvo on Sundries sees the Russian label offer up a third serving of 'Disco Goodies'. Rising stars ScruScru and Meowsn, fresh from the release of a fine collaborative album, get things going via the rubbery, electric piano-smothered deep disco-house bounce of 'Your K' - all chunky beats, swirling strings and dazzling Rhodes solos - before scene stalwart Hotmood blur the boundaries between original production and re-editing on the sparkling, piano-sporting disco-goes-sample house excellence of 'Hard Feelings'. Over on side B, Lowres wraps some low-slung disco samples around a killer bassline and snappy drum machine beats on the heady and hedonistic 'Slishish', while Erik Ellman's 'Tribal Disco' is a beefed-up, full-throttle disco-house translation of a lesser-known 10970s discoid gem

Review: Scottish house music duo Silicone Soul aka Craig Morrison & Graeme Reedie's turn-of-the-millennium deep houser 'Right On!' certainly made a big splash back then, breaching the UK dance singles chart by bringing the genre an oily soulful emulsion. However, not their first release for the esteemed Soma Quality Recordings, 'Right On!' was an expert construction and a favourite for lovers of vocal house at the time. The track is a cover of Curtis Mayfield's 'Right On For The Darkness', a paean for living in the now and grabbing life by the bullhorns).

Ciao Italia Generazioni Underground: Bonus Quattro
Nikita Warren - "I Need You" (Flute mix) (4:32)
Lorenzo Morresi - "Tento Brass" (4:43)
Deseo - "Summer Breeze" (Jazz mix) (4:28)
Alex Neri & Marco Baroni - "Lamar" (4:48)
Anxious - "Tribal Love" (4:49)
Spinapsys - "Whenever (Asha)" (5:34)
Review: Following the success of the Ciao Italia. Generazioni Underground album, Rebirth is excited to release three additional 'Bonus' parts this year, on a limited edition vinyl press. Bonus Quattro continues connecting two distant yet neighbouring generations: the seminal early '90s, and the modern day from a futuristic perspective. On side A, there's some early classics by the likes of Nikita Warren on the emotive old school feelings of 'I Need You' (Flute Mix) and Lorenzo Morresi on the downbeat swagger of 'Tento Brass'. On the flip, Alex Neri & Marco Baroni serve up the proper uplifting house of 'Lamar' while Spinapsys appears with the life-affirming 'Whenever' (Asha) that's a true zeitgeist of a golden era.

Lego Edit - "P-Man" (6:19)
Soulbrigada - "Hum Bello" (6:03)
Wandervogel - "Mirage" (7:41)
Review: The ever-reliable Legofunk label has scored another big one here with four more dance floor-ready bits of disco-rooted fire. Openers XXXV Edits kick off with the cosmic vibes and expansive melodies of 'Space Bass Rooster' before Lego Edit layers up some old-school soul and funk on 'P-Man.' On the flip is the elastic bass funk of Soulbrigada's 'Hum Bello' with is flabby rhythms and great vocals then closing down is a Wandervogel's 'Mirage,' a Rhodes-laced house groove that is jazzy, lo-fi, soulful and brilliantly warm. The sort of thing Moodymann would play to a mad reaction.A

Review: For a long time, Leftfield were cast in the historic lens of that classic 90s phenomenon, the chart-baiting dance 'band'. With Leftism and Rhythm + Stealth they caught a wave and became a household name, creating a blend of expansive dance music that sat outside the specific thrust of any scene, and then they went on a protracted hiatus. Neil Barnes brought the group back in 2010 and went on tour, recorded a new album and generally pushed Leftfield back into the limelight. Now they're back with a follow-up after another seven year pause, and sounding stronger than ever. This Is What We Do is full of the stature you expect, with lead-heavy beats and snarling bass underpinning a treasure trove of hooks. Just clock lead single 'Pulse' and you'll know everything you need to about the level they're operating at these days.

Review: Last year, Piers Harrison's Mysticisms label shone a light on the late 90s work of overlooked German house producer DJ Leinad via a reissue of 1996 gem 'Souvenirs'. Here his sole album, 1997's sought-after Electric City is finally re-released on wax. Indicative of the time period Leinad was operative, the album contains a fine mix of jaunty, Chic and P-funk influenced disco-house ('Freak Tonight', 'Return To The '80s', the brilliant 'Pretty Young Thing'), chunky after-hours house hedonism ('In Trouble'), disco-rock sampling throb-jobs ('Let's Ship'), classy, solo-laden deep house ('Loving People'), early Playhouse style cut-up house ('Out of Phase') and squelchy, US-style house bounce (the inspired title track).

Review: LP Giobbi finally drops her long-awaited debut album. The DJ, activist, producer and pianist has risen to the top quickly and now operates in the same spaces as acts like Bicep and Bonobo. Light Places is dedicated to the artist's parents and finds her calling on her classically trained playing chops to lay down mesmerising melodies. There are plenty of collaborations and lots of freeform experiments that end up as expressive and organic pieces which encourage you to let yourself go and get lost in the lush, lavish sound from the funky chug of 'Greogia' to the indie-pop-dance fusion 'All In A Dream.'

Review: We're prepared to argue with anyone on this, but Universal Robot Band's "Barely Breaking Even" is one of the best boogie-era disco records ever made. Its title was also the inspiration for the name of BBE Records, so it seems fitting that the label's 500th release is an all-star re-recording that brings together NYC house hero Louie Vega and original creators Leroy Burgess and Patrick Adams. Vega delivers vocal and instrumental versions of two distinctive passes: a slick, smooth, soulful and string-laden "Boogie Mix" rich in warm electronics and subtle nods towards the early '80s original, and a rolling "NYC House Remix" full of twinkling Fender Rhodes solos and atmospheric chords. As you'd expect, Burgess' re-recorded vocal is superb.
