Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged and slight surface marks***

While he might not have enjoyed the same global superstardom as Daft Punk or Bob Sinclair, Alan Braxe has more than made his mark as a legend of the French touch movement. As co-creator of monster house anthems 'Music Sounds Better With You' (with Stardust) and 'Intro' (with Fred Falke) he's shown off his skills in crafting an eternal classic. In 2005 The Upper Cuts was released to shine a light on the wider reaches of his impeccable oeuvre - every track a pitch perfect slice of Parisian dancefloor gold. Now it's being reissued in newly remastered form with some bonus belters including Braxe's remix of Britney Spears' 'Anticipating'.

Review: Apparel Wax quickly follow up their summery sounding first 7" with a second sizzling offering that is perfect for warm nights of outdoor dancing. The label collective is behind the music which kicks off with 'Track 1', a slinky mid-tempo house cut with jazzy sax lines lighting it up and dusty drums moving your feet. On the flip things are just as airy and carefree, with 'Track 2' featuring a cute vocal and lots of fluid synth expressionism. Like the first drop, this second one comes with "non-GMO seeds."

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface marks ***

Way back in 1993, when his career was still in its infancy, Chicago great Roy Davis Jr donned an alternative alias, The Believers, and delivered a 12" on Strictly Rhythm: 'Who Dares To Believe In Me?' It was something of a club smash, with Ministry of Sound issuing it in the UK a year later with a swathe of new mixes. This Groovin' Records reissue boasts a trio of mixes from the original U.S 12". On the A-side you'll find the original mix, a warm, spine-tingling slab of piano-rich New York style house topped off by snaking, delay-laden saxophone lines and an inspirational spoken word vocal courtesy of Davis. Over on the reverse, Davis' own 'Just Living High Mix' - a breezier, jazzier and more colourful affair - is followed by Mind Readers' tougher, chunkier and heavier revision, which is in effect a proper dancefloor dub.

Review: Cloud was a Brit-funk group back in the 80s whose catalogue is continuing to get plenty of attention. Their All Night Long EP was a big reissue with a remix from Ge-Ology and now we get Backatcha serving up this EP of four dazzling cuts. The well-crafted and floor-facing tunes here mix up disco, nu-disco, synth-pop and jazz funk with plenty of unique style. It's another doozy for the collection that saves you from forking out high prices for any originals you may be able to find.

I'm Coming Out (instrumental mix) (6:09)
Review: This cultured collaboration between Dirty Channels and Eternal Love extends beyond the Italian house scene with their debut single 'Take Me Up.' Featuring the talented vocalist Mariseya, the track's infectious energy is driven by a captivating piano groove that is very much reminiscent of the artists' deep Italian house roots but with all new style added in. Also featuring is a Diano Ross referencing gem in the form of 'I'm Coming Out' which is a pure house bumper for unadulterated good times. Gerd Janson adds his own touch to his remix and an instrumental is also included.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface marks ***

William Stuckey's 1979 lost gem 'Country People' gets a modern makeover with a new remix plus a funky new track by East Coast Love Affair to balance out this sweet 12". On the A-side. Love Of Mind features a soulful melody and smooth house beats with a funky edge, creating a dancefloor-ready tune. The B-side of the single features the "Flying Mojito Bros Remix" of Stuckey's 'Country People'. This upbeat remix infuses the track with a lively disco vibe, complete with catchy lyrics. Together, both tracks compliment each other very well.

Review: The Energy Exchange family is one of love and shared creation and so this fourth 12" outing sees them invite the in-house production team and extended crew from the 30/70 collective all remix and rework each other. The sounds are drenched in soul and passion and use house music as a framework to explore happy vibes for the dance floor. A Maytra Roller edit kicks off with some lush broken beats and empowering vocals, then Close Counters remixes 'Brighter Star' with piano-laced energy. Elsewhere is the sublime seven-minute opus from Zeitgeist/Goodmood Sex & Candy who flip 'Acceptance' into a gloriously passionate house classic.

Review: Engelwood, or Matt Engels - the 24-year-old future funk, lo-fi, hip-hop and electronic music producer - is now already up to his ninth full-length album. Nautical Nonsense is its name and laidback beats are its game. As with all his music, this record draws on his roots in Brooklyn, New York, as well as soul and funk from the Far East. It is a warm and tropical listen that comes after Engelwood has made his name making music for Dillon Francis, bbno$, Cuco and Yung Gravy. it comes on nice blue wax and is another doozy from this fine beat maker.

The End
Review: In recent interviews, Justice explained that fourth album Hyperdrama - the wildly successful French duo's first for seven years - was born out of the idea of getting elements of disco, funk and electronic music to "fight with each other" (rather than smoother co-existence). Given the forthright and sometimes abrasive nature of their work, it's an idea in keeping with their career to date. Musically, what we get is a mixture of their usual electroclash and rave-inspired riffs and motifs, and basslines, strings and other instrumentation rooted in black dance music of the 1970s and '80s. When the fusion lands - as it does much of the time - it's a unique and thrilling fusion. For proof, check Tama Impala hook-up 'One Night/All Night', the Italo disco/jazz-funk/electro-house fusion of 'Incognito', and the wonderful slow-boogie mutation 'Saturine'.

The Bomb! (These Sounds Fall Into My Mind) (14:58)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface marks ***

There can't be many house records that are as instantly recognisable as Bucketheads' 'The Bomb', a killer, mid-'90s Kenny 'Dope' Gonzalez production that mixed his own sweaty, bombastic, loose-limbed house beats (chopped and edited to provide instant dancefloor satisfaction) with snippets from Chicago disco classic 'Street Player'. You'll find that epic original version tucked away on the flipside of these reissue, with two previously unheard 'Massivedrum' remixes on the A. The EP opening 'Remix' places the original Chicager a chunker bassline and contemporary house beats, while the accompanying 'Dub' concentrates on the beats, bassline and the producer's own sneaky samples. Both new versions are decent, but Gonzalez's original mix is still hard to beat.

Rewind to 1992: Italian DMC champ Andrea Gemolotto and Alfredo conspirator Leo Marras collide for the first of three rare and seminal deep house exercises that have matured perfectly. The Mr Fingers-at-Bora-Bora trumpet-in-space sensuality of "Lose Control", the wide warm struts of the In Dub We Trust mix, spacious dubby reflections of "Night Clerk", the measured strikes and layered humanised stutters of "Nocturne Seduction"... If you think these remastered sound blow minds today, consider how they blew heads clean off 24 years ago. Historical.

Review: The second limited 12" in the Neighboursoul Edits series by Jacque Renault carries on when the popular first one left off. That is to say big tunes, big beats, big samples. 'Magic Rhythm Machine' is a drunken 2 am riot led by monster horns. 'JFK Disco Dub' has excellently wriggling brass and a stepping bassline that builds and builds and builds and never really resolves which will leave crowds in raptures. On the reverse is 'Real To Real,' a more grown-up and sensuous deep house slash disco sound with luxuriant strings for late-night lovers. Things slow right down for the lumpen, elephantine beatdown that is 'Gotta Serve Somebody.'

King Pros' 'You Had to Know' is a powerful mid-tempo rework of a very well respected voice. The result is two stunning tracks that demonstrate the versatility and vitality of the genre.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: B2 Recordings keeps it deep once more with a new 12" of cuddly and cosy house grooves from Those Guys From Athens. 'Be What You Wanna Be' is a perfectly humid and balmy opener for a summer's evening dance under a fading sun, then 'That's What I've Got To Do' picks up the pace with some floored melodies and disco swing. There is a familiar lazy funk bassline to 'Wish You Were Here With Me' as well as a well-treated classic vocal sample from Bill Withers to make this one a real heart melter. 'Feelin' is a more hefty and heavy house sound that will enliven any warm-up.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface marks ***

Demon Records share a reissue of Urban Cookie Collective's 1994 mega-hit The Key, The Secret, adding three lesser-known cuts to the fore as well. The brainchild of one Rohan Heath, who founded the project in the late 1980s, Urban Cookie Collective amounted to a bewitching UK funky house formula, responsible for many a sort-of-underground hit. Not overproduced nor underproduced - cooked just right - 'The Key The Secret' is a prototypical example of uplifting UK-Euro house and synthpop, perhaps with hints of Italo disco thrown in courtesy of a sample from Glam's early 90s club stomper 'Hell's Party'. Meanwhile, B-side cuts 'Feels Like Heaven' continue to charm and bemuse with their completely earnest and unironic Euro-piano uplifts and motivational spirit.

Review: Italian label Irma Records has been putting out these Jazz House collections for a while, but few reach the heights of Volume 9. It is a collection of material that also includes bits from the Groove Culture label that Irma has been collaborating with for some years. One highlight comes early in the form of the steamy downtempo opener by From P60. Theer are more sparkling, pool-side cuts for sunny days such as D-Like's 'One Guitar Night' while the one and only Don Carlos keeps it dreamy and Italo flavoured on his 'Im Free From The Models Of Life.' Belladonna's closer is a nice vocal jam for end of the night bliss.
