113 Fout La Merde (reissue)
Cat: SAMPMS 11317. Rel: 13 Jul 20
  1. 113 Fout La Merde ! (3:54)
  2. 113 Fout La Merde ! (dub) (3:55)
  3. 113 Fout La Merde ! (instrumental) (3:54)
  4. 113 Fout La Merde ! (acappella) (3:03)
Review: Thomas Bangalter will forever be best known as one half of robotic disco house sensations Daft Punk, but turned out various house and hip hop projects before and during the iconic pair's rise to fame. Once such outing came in 2002 when he paired doff with French hip hop collective
113 for "Fout La Merde", a raw single with plenty of different versions. "113 Fout La Merde!" in original format bares plenty of Daft Punk hallmarks with its hip swinging claps and vocodered vocals, while the dub is more bumpy and low riding. Add in an instrumental and a cappella and you have a fine package that is long overdue this reissue.

Keep Ya Head Up
Keep Ya Head Up (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: IMP 005. Rel: 29 Jan 21
  1. 2 Pac - "Keep Ya Head Up" (4:28)
  2. King Tee - "Played Like A Piano" (4:21)
Review: West Coast Classics brings the heat on this latest super 7" with one fo the biggest name sin the game taking care of the a-side. 2 Pac's 1993 gem 'Keep Ya Head Up' features R&B singer Dave Hollister. The tune was dedicated to his godson Elijah and Latasha Harlins and also points out the abuse black women face in society. It's a cut that brims with warmth and a beat sampled from Zapp's 'Be Alright.' Flip it over for King Tee's slow motion, deep cut funk jewel 'Played Like A Piano' which is another vital tune.

  3. Tastes Like Freedom (Tornado Wallace Red Face remix) (8:21)
  4. Tastes Like Freedom (Yu Su Midnight Blossom remix) (4:45)
Review: This is a genuinely excellent remix package, with a quartet of hugely talented artists taking it in turns to provide interesting, mostly floor-friendly revisions of 30/70's warming, jazz-funk-meets-soul jam 'Tastes Like Freedom'. Chaos in the CBD steps up first, re-imagining the track as a jazzy slab of sun-kissed electro bliss, before Carista smothers the band's original drums in moody, foreboding chords, psychedelic acid lines and oodles of delay and reverb. Tornado Wallace channels the spirit of Laurent Garnier's 'Man With The Red Face' - and the St Germain material that the French DJ championed on his F Communications label - on a superb, slow-building deep house anthem in the making, while Yu Su's EP-ending 'Midnight Blossom' remix is a warming, intoxicating downtempo delight.

Can't Keep Working This Hard
Cat: JAL 278V. Rel: 26 Jul 18
  1. Can't Keep Working This Hard (3:34)
  2. Run It Back (feat Andy Cooper) (3:07)
Review: Brand new funk from Bristol-based duo The Allergies, these two pant-swinging numbers mark the build up to their third album Steal The Show. As always, it's an all-out funkathon with full eyes on the party prize. "Can't Keep Working This Hard" jumps with a classic JB style break with some gutsy, raw soul vocal chops while "Run It Back" sees them tagging up with Andy Cooper once again with another classic spitfire rap jam that you know you'll be air rapping to within two or three listens. Yeah you will.

Lean On You
Cat: JAL 352V. Rel: 22 Apr 21
  1. Lean On You (feat Dynamite MC) (2:54)
  2. Working On Me (3:21)
Review: Times may change and life may evolve, but the Allergies will always be unashamed party-starters whose records are both pleasingly heavy and instantly accessible. By now, you shouldn't need further proof og their skills in this department, but if you do, the Bristol combo's latest "45" is a lesson is dancefloor-igniting goodness. 'Lean on You' is a live and funk-fuelled as you'd expect, with distinctive flash-fried funk-rock guitar riffs, bustling, interestingly slung breakbeats and a fine lead vocal from Dynamite MC. Over on the flip, 'Working on Me' is a more bluesy, cut-and-paste funk breaks number that's guaranteed to get feet moving out on the dancefloor.

  1. Move On Baby (3:12)
  2. Are You Ready (feat Andy Cooper & Marietta Smith) (3:15)
Review: Jalapeno Records is one of UK's funkiest dance labels and is has been for ages. Bristol beatmakers The Allergies are just as funky and always serve up a massive dose of sunshine on their Latin flecked sounds. The opener here is 'Move On Baby' and is one of the best tunes the pair have ever laid down. Its packed with great samples, a high speed 60s spy theme rhythm and vintage rhythm 'n' blues vocals over energetic drum breaks. It is a textbook offering form this duo with all the big hooks and horns you need to carry you to the next level. B-side banger 'Are You Ready' is a stomping soul sessions with huge vocal work from Miss Marietta Smith.

Main Event
Cat: JAL 255V. Rel: 21 Sep 17
  1. Main Event (3:37)
  2. Buzzsaw (3:57)
Review: What a trip it's been for The Allergies; rolling from one killer album to the next, funk is flying from their HQ at a rate of knots. Here are two fine examples from their last LP Push On, both featuring their long-time friend and MC from Andy Cooper. Best known for his witty wordplay and character on Ugly Duckling records, here Andy gets to show off both sides to his expansive flow; "Main Event" is a chubby disco groove laced with mountains of funk, creating space for Andy's laidback-but-hypey charm. In perfect contrast "Buzzsaw" is a much sweatier funk jam allowing Cooper to get rapid and tongue-twisty in a way that only he knows how. Keep on pushing...

The Break Down (Eazy Goes To Memphis)
  1. Altered Tapes - "The Break Down (Eazy Goes To Memphis)" (3:59)
  2. DJ Platurn - "King Penguin" (Funky beats edit) (4:01)
Review: Chicago's Altered Tapes crew offer up their own unique take on a West Coast gangster rap classic with the A-side of this one on US label Heat Rock. It's the label's seventh outing and places focus on Memphis soul and funk territory. 'The Break Down' is a big, horn led jam with funk beats and crisp rhythms. Reverse this limited 7" to find Oakland's own DJ Platurn. He smashes out a drum heavy, break-heavy edit that pays homage to a cut and paste great. It's funky, filled with vocal samples and mad keys and packs real heat.

  2. Outro Lugar (4:30)
Review: According to Discogs, this is the first ever release from Arthur Freestyle, but it could just as well be the sound of some overlooked MPB star from back in the day. He delivers his gentle rhythms over a lazy, reggae tinged beat tinged with sunshine and Latin flair, and overload with simple but effective keys and a female accompaniment. It's hard not to fall for this one. Flip it over for 'Outro Lugar,' a Brazilian take on slow motion hip hip crossed with deep loves rock that is as good as it sounds on paper.

The Tokyo pair have a full length album coming up in August but now offer up a first taster of what to expect from it. This special 45rpm features two of the tunes that will be on the album ad a-side jam 'Shooby Dooby' is a futuristic wedge of bubbling analogue funk, Synth bass powers it along and then some textbook Aru-2 talk box vocals add extra spice. On the flip is B-side 'Boost Step,' which heads down a more laidback and downtempo vibe with funk vibes and synth solos leading the way.

Cat: KH45 01. Rel: 20 Nov 19
  1. Top Billin (2:53)
  2. Top Billin (instrumental) (3:00)
Review: Hip-hop diggers will happily tell you that "Top Billin" was one of the tightest, heaviest and most stripped-back rap jams to emerge from New York in the mid 1980s. Here the 1987 hip-hop club classic is given the reissue treatment by fresh label Know How, marking the cut's first appearance on "45" for 32 years. The A-side vocal version - the most famous of the two takes - is a great example of the dancefloor power of stripped-back hip-hop, with the completed cut being little more than chunky drum machine beats and on-point raps rich in call-and-response sections and crowd-pleasing slogans. The harder to find flipside instrumental lays this bare, peppering the duo's beat with select snippets of reverb-laden chants.

  1. Jay Z/Pate - "Show Me The Funk Breaks" (instrumental) (3:47)
  2. P Enemy - "Harder Breaks" (instrumental) (4:08)
Review: The Atlanta based B Boy Breaks series continues with another drop of serious cuts to get beat jugglers, sample diggers and just straight up funk lovers going hog wild over the lashings of drum breaks galore. First up on the A side there's some widescreen, expansive beatdowns taking place with the massive "Show Me The Funk Breaks" - a fela esque sax screaching ,hammond organ swirling classic you already know from the many times it's been lifted for its treasured sonic ingredients. "Harder Breaks" on the flip is another monumental jam, presented here in instrumental form most recently used for the theme tune of a UK TV show . The evergreen groove is just crying out for someone with the skills to drop some serious turntablism all over this one.

  1. Raise It Up (2:36)
  2. Space (2:29)
Review: Big Crown is one of our favourite labels here at HQ. The funk and soul they serve up is perfectly aged yet never overly nostalgic and this new one is another case it point. It's the latest from the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band and features two singles take from their latest and greatest album Expansions which landed back in June. As always they bring their own unique steel drum sounds and tropical Caribbean vibes to funk music. 'Raise It Up' is a deep cut joint with big horns and rippling steel drums puddles while 'Space' is a more lumpy groove with the drums more front and centre.

  1. Beastie Boys Vs MFSB - "Check It Out People" (4:19)
  2. MFSB - "People All Over The World" (dub) (4:08)
Review: The latest edition in DJ Soopasoul's "Soopastole Edits" series looks like it may fly off the shelves, and with good reason. The lead cut is not an edit per se, but rather a crafty, clever and expertly produced mash-up that places selected rap flows from the acapella version of Beastie Boys classic "Ch-Check It Out" over a tightened up and fattened up rearrangement of MFSB's disco-era jam "People All Over The World". Sometimes these kinds of mash-ups can be messy, but this genuinely isn't, with the Beasties' vocals fitting the backing track like a glove. Over on side B Soopasoul shares his tweak of the MFSB track, which is entirely instrumental bar periodic use of the band's female backing vocals. In a word: ace!

Straight Jacket (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: OC 006. Rel: 05 Feb 20
  1. Straight Jacket (4:10)
  2. Get Funky (3:52)
Review: When it comes to classic hip-hop cuts, the Old Chillin' series of seven-inch singles has you covered. The mysterious crew behind the series has previously offered up gems by Big Daddy Kane, Nas and Cyprus Hill. Here they turn their attention to the bulging back catalogue of New York twosome the Beatnuts. Both tracks are taken from the pair's fine 1994 debut album. A-side "Straight Jacket" is a bona fide NYC hip-hop club classic, with the duo adding tight raps to a drowsy but dancefloor-friendly "Golden era" beat. Flipside "Get Funky" is a little more densely layered and laidback in tone, though it's still lively enough to suggest that it's worthy of regular club spins again.

The Belmont Shadows beef up an acapella version of 'Kiss Him Goodbye' where you'll hear the drummer get wicked over cuts and beats from one of the top DJs of the west coast. Review: Bootleg remix specialist Big Mac is back! Having previously reworked cuts by Nas, Jay-J and Ol' Dirty bastard, amongst others, he's now turned his attention to two classic cuts from Masta Ace's early '90s rap crew, Masta Ace Incorporated. On side A, he subtly breathes new life into breezy boom-bap classic 'The INC Ride', tightening things up while allowing the original beats, samples and crew vocals a chance to breathe. He takes a similar approach on his flipside re-edit of 'Saturday Night Live', once again focusing on the original's Bobbi Humphrey and Melvin Bliss-sampling groove. Review: When it comes to mash-ups and unofficial reworks, sometimes the simplest ideas are the ones that make for the most effective versions. That's certainly the case here, as Soul Mates main man Amerigo Gazaway crafts a fresh slab of funk/hip-hop fusion out of three key elements: a legendary Biggie Smalls acapella, sections lifted from James Brown classic "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" and his own head-nodding hip-hop beats. There's not much more to it than that, but the resultant cut, "Big Poppa's Got a Brand New Bag", sounds like a guaranteed dancefloor winner. The A-side version is the full vocal take, while the flipside is a Biggie-free instrumental mix.
