Review: American neo-soul pin-up D'Angelo has released a couple of the smoothest records of the last 30 years. He even made a welcome comeback in the mid 2010s and added some more magic to his cannon. Here Kero Uno remixes a couple of his tunes and ups their funky quotient to make them more suitable to dancefloors. First, he flips 'Spanish Joint' into a key-laced and funky workout with low-slung, hip-swinging grooves sure to seduce next to the zippy synth leads. It is an indie exclusive via Chrysalis and comes as much of the American pioneers back catalogue has been made available for the first time digitally and via several vinyl reissues. It is one of the daisy age power group's most feel good, happy and poppy singles with plenty of samples, not least of Funkadelic's 'Knee Deep.' All these years later it is still an injection of good times direct into the veins.

Review: The exact backstory of this one is hard to pin down but suffice it to say if you haven't heard Darondo's 'Didn't I' before then as soon as you do you will fall in love. It has previously been released on a 7" entitled 'Edits' by Stefan Trischler aka Trishes back in 2010 but with a different B-side. Here it comes on TLM with a 1773 remix on the flip. The original is a hard-ass funk cut with raw and tough drums and splintered hi-hats all topped off with the aching and soulful vocal sample and some distant lavish strings. The flip side version features Cerebral Vortex and has extra bars that add a hip-hop touch.

Review: The Pimpala West Coast Classics series does exactly what it says on the label, delivering tidy 7" singles featuring new edits of much-loved 90s West Coast hip-hop gems. This time round, the scalpel fiend at the controls is Ronnie Frazzle. He first turns his attention to Snoop's Dr Dre-produced mega-hit 'Gin & Juice', a delightfully laid-back 1993 number that's often cited as one of the finest moments of hip-hop's "golden era". Over on the flip it's all about DJ Quik's 1992 Profile Records single 'Jus Lyke Compton', an even more laid-back and groovy affair that pays tribute to the notorious LA neighbourhood that became the focal point of the enormous "gangsta" hip-hop scene of the 1990s.

For this one though he leaves behind his high energy sounds for a much more mature and grown up beat with Edo.G and Nubya Garcia. 'Roxbury' is a smooth bit of deep cut boombap with gently tumbling toms and smooth flows from Edo.G. The icing on the cake is the dreamy sax work from new school star Nubya Garci. Like the other one, this 45 pulls out plenty of the Cuban influences Dez is known for. A-side 'Debes Llorar' is all life-affirming chords that fans of his classic 'New 4 U' will recognise, but stitched over ticking and raw drum beats with a Latin shuffle and Spanish vocals. Here the auspicious Aussie reworks the ineluctable opening theme music from S.W.A.T., the ‘70s police procedural that more or less inaugurated the genre, but not before he detourns any actual swattage with a reworked version of LL Cool J’s breakout hit on the A.

Review: EDdits master DJ Bacon returns for two of his boxiest yet on the usual 7". Bacon's production style betrays a kind of Buddhist mindfulness, or at least a minimalism, in its approach; all you need is a good beat, ever-so-slightly abstracted from its original context, to arouse the excitations of both mind and body. The fact of not knowing the sample's origin is part of the art; this condition of not knowing fetishises the breakbeat, by partially obfuscating knowledge of where the sample came from. Titles like 'Sardines Is The Word' and 'TF Megamix' are likely coded allusions to these original desiderata, but only the most hardened connoisseurs, a secret club in which Bacon and a select few others surely fraternise, would know exactly which sample sources these are. Thus we have the continued recreation of DJ Bacon as a purveyor of cool; one which enables us to enjoy the slick roundedness of these beats more than we would if the game was given away.

Review: Hole In One is a label that's not mucking about. It is seeing up top quality tunes at a fairly busy rate and this sixth one is another joy to the ears of hip-hop lovers. Drunkenstein is the man in charge and he kicks off with the sunny sounds and dusty breaks of 'Live The Good Life' before 'Lean Back' is a much deeper, slower, more jazzy joins for the afters. 'Koi Song' toys with golden era boom bap and some pensive piano chords while a strange lead brings an almost country twist. A remix of MC Gruff's 'This is How We Do' is last up and maybe the EP's highlight.

Review: Scaring The Hoes was the 2023 collaborative record by unequivocal avant-hip-hop crown bearers Danny Brown and JPEGMAFIA. The album was almost instantly met with widespread critical acclaim, most notably for its weird use of contemporary political imagery in music videos (frequently Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un, for some reason) and its staunch defiance of the misogynistic injunction to "stop scaring the hoes" with weird, left-of-centre music. Now comes the 'DLC' and/or 'expansion pack' version of the album, which includes four exclusive new mixes from the album sessions; Brown shines on an ultra-kooky, SFX-laden intro, 'Guess What Bitch, We Back Hoe!', followed by the crackly soul-bap of 'Hermanos' and the crossticking lo-fi of 'Tell Me Where To Go'. Closer 'No! No! No!' presents an incredible gospel timestretch-spaghettification, over which a medley shared between both MCs makes their enduring talents ever more apparent.

Review: Crossing the pond, UK-based DJ and producer Dan Greenpeace teams back up with Diamond D, a legendary rapper and producer from New York. The result is 'Nowhere To Run To', a hard-hitter gangsta rap anthem espousing a "trust no-one" headspace - "keep the grass cut low so you can see the snakes" - against a heavy, scratchy, paranoid horrorcore instrumental. Whether or not the classic 1965 song by Martha Reeves was kept in mind, Diamond D's trademark flow glides over Greenpeace's boom-bap production just as effortlessly as Reeves' did back then, expressing similar sentiments of entrapment and fate.

With the instrumentals here completed before help was enlisted, the first to receive a rap contribution was 'Here I Come', featuring Wildelux, who on request delivered his bars in no time. Review: DJ Ryow aka Smooth Current is a Japanese DJ and producer known for his hip-hop and r&b remixes. 'Re:Strain Of Stairs', as the title suggests, reinterprets the song 'Strain Of Stairs' by Japanese rock band The Pillows on the A-side, bringing a loose-hipped drum workout to the ordeal. On the B, meanwhile, Ryow goes all out on a new original featuring Kim Hill, 'Ain't Even Like Me', a song which first debuted online a least four years ago - it's an impressively-made production in contemporary r&b, with exquisite harmonies from Hill.

It came about after the label head wondered how Lisa's songs would sound if Japanese jazz trio Nautilus arranged some of them. They have, and here are the results, a very personal new single off a great new album. 'Everytime' is tieless funk with a super sweet and innocent vocal over crisp drums. On the flip is a remix that takes it in new directions with Pat Van Dyke, a longtime known producer and multi-instrumentalist from New Jersey, at the helm. He brings good time horn led sounds with a guest appearance by Brooklyn based lyricist John Robinson.
