Check It Out People (reissue)

  1. Beastie Boys Vs MFSB - "Check It Out People" (4:19)
  2. MFSB - "People All Over The World" (dub) (4:08)
Review: The latest edition in DJ Soopasoul's "Soopastole Edits" series looks like it may fly off the shelves, and with good reason. The lead cut is not an edit per se, but rather a crafty, clever and expertly produced mash-up that places selected rap flows from the acapella version of Beastie Boys classic "Ch-Check It Out" over a tightened up and fattened up rearrangement of MFSB's disco-era jam "People All Over The World". Sometimes these kinds of mash-ups can be messy, but this genuinely isn't, with the Beasties' vocals fitting the backing track like a glove. Over on side B Soopasoul shares his tweak of the MFSB track, which is entirely instrumental bar periodic use of the band's female backing vocals. In a word: ace!

Shimmy Shimmy Ya
Cat: COMBO 003. Rel: 21 Dec 20
  1. Shimmy Shimmy Ya (Big Mac edit) (3:48)
  2. Brooklyn Zoo (Big Mac edit) (3:57)
Review: While this may have the look of a bootleg release, we're reliably informed that DJ/producer Big Mac reworked these two 1990s Ol' Dirty Bastard classics from the original stems. You can hear that on the excellent A-side version of 'Shimmy Shimmy Ya', which boasts fatter drums, a more DJ-friendly intro for mixing and - more surprisingly - a fresh second verse lifted from a completely different record. The version of 'Brooklyn Zoo' has some additional percussion, too, giving the jam even more weight than it had first time around. Given that the original was bass-heavy but relatively percussively light, beefing up the beats was definitely a smart move from Big Mac.

  1. The Choice Is Yours (Revisited) (4:04)
  2. The Choice Is Yours (3:26)
Review: The next instalment of the official classic hip-hop reissue series from Mr Bongo focusses on the hard-to-find 45 of Black Sheep's 'The Choice Is Yours'. This marks the first time this has ever been on this format, and the diets time it has ever really been released in the UK. The original, here on the b-side, is one of the band's most celebrated releases and was made around key parts of Johnny Hammond's oft-sampled 'Big Sur Suite' from 1974. It's a sweet soundtrack to many a party from days gone by and still stands up there as a stone cold classic anthem.

  1. Bounce Castle - "Made You Look" (Bengaluru Bounce remix) (3:04)
  2. Altered Tapes - "Tiger Styles" (36 Chambers remix) (3:40)
Review: Hardcore funk and breaks lovers rejoice - the latest Heat Rock is a real winner. This 7th and final entry into the first series has a pair of world music-influenced bangers on it. The first tune is produced by Bounce Castle from Chicago and is primed for the dance floor with its Bollywood-flavoured vibes and big beats. It's a fresh take on a big tune from QB's Finest. And if you reverse it, fellow Chicagoan Altered Tapes mixes up a Cumbia slash dancehall slash breakbeat version of an iconic song from legendary Wu Tang album 36 Chambers.

  1. Aretha Franklin & Black Star - "Young, Gifted & Black" (4:50)
  2. Aretha Franklin & Gucci Mane - "My Chain Of Fools" (2:48)
Review: Over the past few years, American producer Amerigo Gazaway has delivered some of the most inspired mash ups and bootleg remixes around, including a number that breathe new life into recordings by genuine soul and hip-hop greats. He's at it again here, crafting two killer cuts featuring the late, great Aretha Franklin. He first offers up a head-nodding take on 'Young, Gifted and Black' that cleverly combines his own beats, extended raps from Tallib Kewli and Mos Def as Black Star, and snippets of Aretha at her powerful best. Flip the disc for 'Chain of Fools', a stomping fusion of hip-hop and Detroit soul which sees him flit between Gucci Mane raps and more Aretha goodness.

Cat: BOAT 002. Rel: 20 Jan 21
  1. Feelin' (Produced By Grooveman Spot) (4:53)
  2. My Summer Goes On (3:57)
Review: There isn't much info out there about Goto but on this evidence he is a well school artist with a love of contemporary R&B and classic hip-hop. He brings both together while rapping in Japanese about who knows what, but the end result reminds us of a classic MC Solar joint. 'Feelin' is all lo fi sounds and heart melting chords that are romantic and heartfelt, then 'My Summer Goes On' gets more crunchy in its beat work. Noodling sax leads bring the warmth, the piano are that bit more playful and once again the result is superb.

Review: The lead track from their evergreen album of the same name, Libretto & Buscrates's 2019 vibe 'Eternal Ridin'' takes us cruising around Watts on extra-pumped tyres as XL Middleton gets in the remix. Flipping it from a woozy, Faze-O sampling day dream into a full-on nocturnal block party, XL lives up to his name again. Meanwhile on the B, C Scott provides the same uplift to '(When The) Music Is On' giving it a crisp swing and organ hook that's not dissimilar to Ugly Duckling. Keep on ridin'.

Review: Mr Bongo continue to shine a light on classic hip-hop with their excellent curated reissue series. They have two Main Source 45s in their sights and this is the second. When it first came out on Actual Records, it soon sold out and became a much sought after piece with copies going for high prices on the second hand market. And for good reason - the band really hinted at the greatness they would go on to achieve with an impeccable three minute rap single making a massive mark. 'Think' is a superb example of how to take well known samples and flip them into something fresh.

Review: Los Angeles's alternative hip hop pioneer Myka 9 of Freestyle Fellowship and Haiku D'Etat put out their classic and critically acclaimed album 1969 in 1999. A fan favourite packed with guests like Aceyalone, AWOL One, Busdriver, and Gel Roc, and production by Canada's heavyweight Factor Chandelier, it's a slept on classic. This new, super limited 7" is an exclusive collab between the pair and is the sound for the climate of the world right now. It comes ahead of a new full length and shows the duo very much still have what it takes to make an impact 20 years after they first did so.

An instant floor filler, thanks to its Taste Of Honey sample, K's chancing and chirpsing still hit with playful cheek and vibe that reminds us he did indeed have the skills to pay the bills. 3. Remember Us (instrumental 7" edit) (2:18)
  4. Portisheadshop (2:25)
Review: If you're on the lookout for some hedonistic, party-starting fare, we'd highly recommend this bonus seven-inch from Ogogo's ongoing Oonop Drops series. The theme is "ruff cuts", with the Ruffcats setting the agenda on side A, joining forces with Allergies' mic man Andy Cooper for the jazzy funk breaks-meets-scratch-happy-hip-hop heaviness that is the Slick Walk remix of 'On The Run'. That comes accompanied on side A by a typically tight and heavy instrumental version. Over on the flip, 6th Generation take over with 'Remember Us', a jazzy, deep and bass-heavy instrumental hip-hop number of the type that Grand Central Records' used to champion, before Clockwerk and Birdmoves wrap things up via the smoky trip-hop head-nod that is 'Portisheadshop'.

Toxic Funk Vol 4
Cat: BBP 185. Rel: 14 Jan 21
  1. Dance To The Beat (3:13)
  2. Treacherous Love (3:07)
Review: DJ P and the Breakbeat Junkie have been working together as Second Hand Audio for well over a decade, though this contribution to the Toxic Funk series - the fourth in total, fact fans - marks their first joint appearance on Breakbeat Paradise. In keeping with the series' party-starting ethos, A-side 'Dance to the Beat' sees them cannily combine chunky funk breaks with old school hip-hop snippets, vintage soul vocal lifts and jangly instrumental samples from what sounds like a breezy cover version of the Jacksons' 'ABC' (but probably isn't). The smile-inducing fun continues on flipside jam 'Treacherous Love', a slower, hip-hop-tempo number that peppers a head-nodding beat and funk-rock guitars with vocals from an all-star rap number.

Review: Edits label Resense is back with another of its double drops and once again the arrival of another pair of DJ Oonops-selected cuts has got us all hot and in a spin. Slick Walk gets us going with the cuddly chairs and festive jazz keys of 'Young Jazzy' which slowly awaken you and get you grooving. Flip it over and Voodoocuts takes over with 'One Million Clubs', a bristling blend of DIY perc, 50 Cent vocal refrains and a noodling funk bassline that you have to hear to believe. The whole thing is brilliantly subversive and counts as another real winner for this label.

Review: Over the last decade, Hideo Sasaki has gained a reputation for being one of Japan's premier turntablists and beat-makers, consistently offering up now hard-to-find seven-inch singles that combine "golden era"-influenced backing tracks with raps from some seriously good - and in some cases well-known - MCs. The Far East Quality EP acts as a showcase for the producer's work, gathering together previously seven-inch only tracks and unheard remixes. It's universally excellent, though our highlights include the bustling, string-drenched excellence of 'No Love Lost' featuring Diamond D, the boom-bap brilliance of Large Professor hook-up 'Jewel of the Day', and both versions of 'Laced With Tragedy', Sasaki's collaboration with Tragedy Khadafi.

Review: We might be nearing the end of 2020 but this year's endless Record Store Day keeps on serving up more new wax. This special 12" from Island is limited in numbers and features ouse big remixes of tunes by R&B sensation The Weeknd. First up is the pitch shifted vocal work and late night neons of a 'Heartless' remix, then Chromatics subtly tweak 'Blinding Lights' in a longing pop anthem. 'Save Your Tears' (OPN remix) is a more upbeat and feelgood tune that gets you swaying and then a Vapour Wave version of 'Heartless' skews those synths and layers up cold trap beats. A Saturday Night Live version of 'Scared to Live' and far sighted and reflective remix of 'After Horus' rounds out the EP.

Review: Almost five years have passed since we last heard from X Ray Ted, a Bristol-based party starter and champion turntablist best known for his occasional outings on Ghetto Funk. He's in typically funky form on his first ever vinyl outing, offering up two killer cut-and-paste workouts via a cheery Bomb Strikes "45". Both cuts are carefully crafted from largely familiar loops and samples, but tastefully enough done to ward off any accusations of cheesiness. A-side 'Mirror Ballin' is particularly potent, with the West Country producer peppering a tooled-up version of a familiar mid-tempo disco-funk groove with all manner of much-loved vocal samples. Flipside 'Party Time' lives up to its title, strengthening an even fierier disco-funk groove with the kind of cuts and samples guaranteed to get any dancefloor rocking.

Review: New York City based hip-hop MC/producer Angel Aguilar is 8 Off, and his 1995 debut album Wrap Your Lips Around This remains his most well known. It's a mix of scene-setting skits and various hip hop styles: there is the celebratory pomp of 'Ghetto Girl' with its big horns and sweet rhymes and the deep cut and observational 'Neighbourhood Hoe' as well as classic boom bap joints like the excellent 'Life Aint Easy.' It serves as a reminder of hip hop's heyday and is a welcome time machine back to a simpler time.

Review: Amongst those more qualified to comment on the contemporary New York hip-hop scene, Al Doe is something of a rising star. He's been bubbling away for a while now, learning from mentor and fellow Latino MC Fat Joe. The Dona Blanca Trilogy is, somewhat surprisingly, his first project to ever appear on wax. It was quite clearly inspired by New York hip-hop of the late '90s and early 2000s, with his hard-hitting, often conscious lyrics about poverty, crime and ghetto life working in perfect unison with RocNation A&R and renowned beat-maker Spanish Ran's intricate, boom-bap inspired backing tracks. It has the feel of a future classic, but don't take our word for it: check out the clips now!

Review: Time has been kinder on the Beastie Boys' first and most explosive hip-hop album than many would have thought at the time. Their combination of snotty nosed brat rapping and Rick Rubin's trademark production, combining raw, meaty breaks and metal riffs, was assumed to be a flash in the pan back then, but rather a fad it would turn out to be the inaugural offering in a stream of classic albums that would delight heads and also recruit millions of new fans over to the genre's side. Massive breakthrough hit '(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)' is here , of course, but the tracks that sound the freshest now are the mean and lean 'No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn', 'Hold It Now, Hit It' and opening track 'Rhymin & Stealin', powered by beats originated by Led Zep's John Bonham. A laugh, yes, but seriously good at the same time.

Review: Billy Ghost is the instrumental project of The Kickback singer and songwriter Billy Yost. The Purple Haunted Bathtub is the first full release from the producer, emphasizing his love of instrumental hip hop, antiquated sampling technology, and the VHS collection amassed by his five older brothers from which he cribs many of the vocal and dialog snippets that litter the album. In an already flooded "lofi" genre, Yost has sought to carve out a space by creating "definable hooks that hopefully bother you for days" over the top of his dusty drums. The Haunted Purple Bathtub is dedicated to Yost's dog, a shiba inu named Opal, who adorns the cover of the album.

Review: In 2007, Blu & Exile released an album that went on to make a seismic effect. This is the long anticipated follow up with another carefully curated list of collaborators such as CD Armstrong, Jacinto Rhines, Fashion and many more. It is a long record that muses on the social and cultural forces that shape all of us, with the LA backpack rapper in fine form as the Dirty Science producer serves up some lush beats. There are jazzy instrumentals, but also tracks that dig into each artists heritage such as the afro sounds of "Requiem Of Blue". With its stunning sampling and broad array of styles, this is stunning record.

Review: Dark Jones is a two time Grammy Award winner who also drums for Jack White and here he teams up with Bobby J From Rockaway for a high quality album or stripped back beats. It takes hip hop back to its roots, to the bare bones, the grooves and beats that do something to your body that means you cannot resist moving along. Made with just one mic and two decks, per the title, it's a unique approach that results in timeless sounds, dusty cuts and lived in vibes that were all recorded in one day during one session in a studio in New York. It's a vital record for beat lovers.

Review: Brainorchestra returns to High Water Mark for a third full length album here that once again conjures a wide array fo moods and grooves. This follow-up features legendary producers such as Ohbliv, Foisey, Derrick Braxton, Good Food and more and shows that the rapper has matured and evolved since last time out. The beats are fresh and filled with feeling, with smart samples from jazz, soul and funk paired with lush pianos to form a perfect backdrop to his deliveries. They are always from the heart and his warm tone has a serious weight and pathos to it making this record all the more impactful.
