Next Level (7" limited to 230 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: GSM 004. Rel: 03 Dec 19
  1. Next Level (3:57)
  2. Right On (5:19)
Review: Only 230 copies of this hot-to-trot seven-inch exist, so you'll have to move fast to secure a copy. It's certainly well worth picking up, thanks to the quality of the cut-and-paste antics on show from Gimme Some More main men the 45 Brothers. Taking a similar approach to Double Dee and Steinski, "Next Level" sees them stitch together a variety of killer funk grooves and sweaty breakbeats, which are then peppered with all manner of classic hip-hop vocal samples. Flipside "Right On" is an altogether deeper affair with a hazier, more undulating feel and excellent use of deep Rhodes chords, flanged guitar licks and drifting female vocal samples.

Review: Andres has always been out there doing his thing, but it feels like an age since he dropped "Andres III" on us. Finally, the Detroit hero is back with a splash on his regular home of Mahogani Music with a stunning follow-up that brings out the best of his many musical threads. There's Cubano style vibes on "Back In The Old Times" and hand-clapping gospel tinted house grooves on "Mighty Tribe", sweet and sexy downtempo jams like "I'll Wait 4 U" and mad heavy R&B beatdowns like "What's Ur Name Again" - that's just the first four tracks and when they hit like this, you know the rest of the record's just as strong and just as varied.

Top Billin (7" limited to 300 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: KH45 01. Rel: 20 Nov 19
  1. Top Billin (2:53)
  2. Top Billin (instrumental) (3:00)
Review: Hip-hop diggers will happily tell you that "Top Billin" was one of the tightest, heaviest and most stripped-back rap jams to emerge from New York in the mid 1980s. Here the 1987 hip-hop club classic is given the reissue treatment by fresh label Know How, marking the cut's first appearance on "45" for 32 years. The A-side vocal version - the most famous of the two takes - is a great example of the dancefloor power of stripped-back hip-hop, with the completed cut being little more than chunky drum machine beats and on-point raps rich in call-and-response sections and crowd-pleasing slogans. The harder to find flipside instrumental lays this bare, peppering the duo's beat with select snippets of reverb-laden chants.

  7. Worlds Together (3:26)
Review: Steve Spacek's Blackpocket project enjoys the wax justice his beats were tailored for. Pure 24th century soul, everything about this special Exit mini album shimmers with the forward-thinking songwriting and sonic textures he's been known for since the early 90s. A lights-down-low affair that sucks you deep into its cosmic underbelly, from the trickling raindrop arpeggios of opener "ALAYLY" to the driving beats and hooky vocals of finale "Worlds Together" by way of the smoky Amp Fiddler style finger clocks and humanised textures of "Wake Up Feel Good" and the introspective star-lit noodles of "Organic Tech", it's another superlative voyage from Mr White. Talent and innovation clearly runs in the family.

Review: Damu The Fudgemunk has enlisted the help of vocalist Blu to bring "Ground & Water" to life. Like all his albums, it is story telling based with superbly crisp production from the Washington DC man, backed with sweet flowing, tight rhymes from the Los Angeles rapper. The mood is often introspective and personal, with plenty of lyrical depth throughout. Faith, guilt, spirituality, humility and plenty more all come up on these thoughtful raps. Musically there is vital variation with some harder hitting jams next to the more blissed out and deep cut grooves.

Cat: BBR 024. Rel: 05 Dec 19
  1. Knee Deep (edit) (4:12)
  2. Mothership Bonus Beats (remix) (3:54)
Review: Jorun Bombay likes to muck about with all sorts of different beats, but he always does it with real skill and personality. That's made him one Canada's most revered hip hop stars and here he tackles the one and only Parliament. His version of "Knee Deep" with its extra bass weight and shrill synth lines bring the party vibes thanks to the feel good pianos. "Mothership Bonus Beats" on the flip is a late night, slow and sleazy jam to get you in the mood. The squelchy synth bass is to die for, the drawn out horns linger long in the air making it a perfectly steamy cut.

Review: Danny Brown has long been an underground hip hop superstar. Now up to his fifth studio album he has pretty much achieved it all so decides to drill down and make a supremely focussed record that says a lot in just 11 tracks. His flow is reined in and superbly controlled throughout, it's hip hop laced with a sense of psychedelia but also strongly informed by classic, golden era boom-bap - no doubt thanks to the legendary producer behind it all, namely Mr Q-Tip. Featuring raw energy, spiritual thoughtfulness, guest spots from Run The Jewels and Blood Orange, this is an accomplished record from an accomplished artist.

Stan Lee (7")
Cat: RK 45081. Rel: 21 Nov 19
  1. Stan Lee (feat Illa J) (3:35)
  2. Stan Lee (instrumental) (3:34)
Review: Rolling Stone magazine once described funk-fuelled dancefloor revivalists Calibro 35 as "the most fascinating, retro-maniac and genuine thing that has happened to Italy in the past few years". It's certainly true that they have an impeccable track record, with their numerous albums on Record Kicks being particularly potent. "Stan Lee" is their first and presumably only single of 2019: a languid chunk of soundtrack inspired psychedelic soul/hip-hop fusion that comes laden with rapped and sung vocals by J Dilla's younger brother Illa J. The band's instrumental version takes pride of place on Side B, allowing listeners to wallow in their intricate production and evocative musical choices.

Review: "Forest Hills Drive" was the third album from J Cole all the way back in 2014. Even then the American was regarded as a real hip hop heavyweight, and since its release his stature has only grown. This special Black Friday release presents some of the album's key tracks on a fancy picture disc. Opener "Apparently" was nominated for Best Rap Performance at the 58th Grammy Awards, "Love Yourz" won a BET Hip Hop Award and "No Role Modelz" was certified platinum, so all in all these are some pretty iconic tracks from one of the scene's best.

Review: French producer DJ Cam has been one of his homeland's most notable hip hop beat makers since as far back as his 1995 gem La Yellow 357 with Dimitri From Paris. Now he's back with an exquisite instrumental hip hop album that pays tribute to the lounge-y boom-bap of his favourite MCs and good-time groove makers like A Tribe Called Quest and J Dilla. Filled with soul samples, jazz keys and of course crisp wooden beats, it's a laid back, heart felt affair. Two remixes he's done for Nas and Cypress Hill also feature at the end to make this another golden collection.

Review: Sample maestro, turntable wizard and genre-blender extraordinaire DJ Shadow unveils his latest album after teasing with hit single "Rocket Fuel" featuring vocals from legendary trio De La Soul earlier in the year. The full length finds the US beat maker in an angry mood, with plenty of anxiety riddled cuts, frazzled synths and raw textures conveying a certain unease with the world around him. There are still moments of his trademark string laced beauty on "Firestorm" and gorgeous instrumentals like "Rosie," but this is definitely the sound of an artist who still has plenty of new things to say.

Review: First things first: the world has come a long way in its attitude to women since this album was first released, so in 2019, 2001 sounds - at least lyrically - wrong on many levels. But it is also still very right when it comes to g-funk, west coast rap and second wave hip hop sounds. Listening to it from start to finish is to spend 90 minutes as a fly on the wall of the lives of Snoop, Dre, Eminem and all the rest of the high profile guests. Jam packed with classics and gold standards, this is an album of its time but one that was never bettered.

Review: DJ Danny Dan The Beat Mann steps out of the Dusty Fingers shadows with a full live band for this new edition of one of the most comprehensive break collection series known to man. Four breaks, all wrapped up in their own unique vibe, there's a cinematic feel running throughout tapping into the OST source so many samples are taken from. Hungry for tension? Get yourself some "Blood Lust". Need that moody atmosphere vibe to break up the intensity? "The Biler Room" is for you. A little hazy magic to whisk your mix away? You need "It's Just A Dream". Finally, if you're after a more swing and party feel then you can't fail with "Man Hunt". Pure drum magic; get those fingers flexing.

  1. So Watcha Sayin' (4:28)
  2. You Gots To Chill (4:16)
Review: An original 7" of this gem will cost you upwards of 100 quid so Know How are doing us all a favour here. As EPMD, Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith were a red hot duo who served up many quintessential rap gems. "So Watcha Sayin'" is taken from their second album "Unfinished Business", imbued with scratching by DJ Scratch, deeply buried chords and of course a slick verse that is pure old school. While flipside "You Gots To Chill" has some fresh vocoder work, dusty drum loops and body popping bass, the a-side takes all the glory here.

Review: A new album from Gang Starr is no joke, 16 years on from the last after Guru's passing in 2010. With DJ Premier on the beats, you need not question the quality spilling out of the speakers throughout this powerful return from one of hip-hop's holy grails. The spots showing some of the late Guru's skills act as a bittersweet reminder of his lyrical gift and that voice, but the space he left behind is amply filled out by a hit list of guest spots on the mic. MOP, Q-Tip, Jeru The Damaja, Talib Kweli - as if any of these legends would pass up the chance to lend their bars to this late entry from hip-hop royalty.

  1. Trigger Happy Nigga (45 edit) (4:28)
  2. Scarface (45 edit) (4:26)
Review: Scarface's appeal endures many years after it first burned so bright, and Tony Montana remains an inspiration for many a young gangster, including studio gs like The Geto Boys who sampled various bits of his dialogue for these two tracks back in 1990. Here, the late DJ Ready Red serves up two edits, fully embracing the stereotypes that went on to become the norm for rappers in the years after. "Trigger Happy Nigga" is a bristling boom bap joint while "Scarface" rolls a little deeper with gun shots and scratching bringing the realness.

Review: Ill Bill and Vinnie Paz reconvene as Heavy Metal Kings for a hard-hitting new EP featuring long-time collaborator Lord Goat (formerly Goretex). "The Wages Of Sin" pairs hard edged beats and low slung bass with Wu-Tang style shadowy soul to absorbing effect. "Dominant Frequency" utilises a quirkier sample paired with a slower, deeper cut beat that is full of menace and angst.

Review: Ice-T has a discography to rival the best of the best, but his fourth studio album is often said to be his greatest. It continues in the fine run of form that opens with "First Impression" and finds him reach his peak in many ways: his lyrical skills, beat selection and delivery all come out top across two sides of definitive West Coast gangster rap. On an album of countless gems, the likes of "New Jack Hustler", "Body Count" and "Bitches 2" all stand out for their refined flow, deep cut beats and cutting commentaries on violence, social structures and life in the ghetto.

Review: There's a gorgeous airiness to these KLIM Beats tracks that transports you to a lazy Saturday afternoon in the park, laying supine as a warm summer breeze drifts over you and the birds and the bees busily go about their work. The hits are crisp, the drum work laidback, the keys jazzy, and the whole thing is utterly timeless and escapist, with just the odd vocal sample appearing in the distance to drag you from your reverie and adding another layer of heartfelt loveliness. Soft rhythms and peaceful pads like this will always have a place in our affections.

Review: American Steve Lacy's solo debut showcases his vocal as well as guitar playing skills while drawing on the rich history of hip hop at the same time. His lo-fi approach to production and vulnerable and introspective style of singing makes this solo debut album "Apollo XXI" feel like a very personal work all while offering golden moments of bedroom pop, indie leaning lullabies and wordplay beyond the artist's 21 years. After contributing to tracks by Solange, Kendrick, Mac Miller, Blood Orange and Vampire Weekend as well as being part of The Internet, this might be the breakout record Lacy deserves. Either way, it is a richly rewarding listen from a hugely talented young artist.

Review: Hip hop fans love a bit of trivia, so hold tight: Damu the Fudgemunk lost power in his studio as soon as he finished recording his first take demos of these remixes. He decided to put them out in 2011 (hence the Power Outage titles) and instead of remaking the exact same beats, he used the sample from the original in a different way to give rise to the Boy Scout Remix. The record sold out in quick time and now gets a long overdue re-issue. The smooth and seductive results speak for themselves, and have more than stood the test of time.
