Review: Back in the early 2000s, Stefan Schwander (better known these days for his Harmonious Thelonious project) released a handful of fine 12" singles as A Rocket In Dub that successfully blurred the boundaries between minimal house and dub techno. Here, one of the series' most renowned cuts, 'Rocket No. 3', is revisited. Like the 2002 original mix, the A-side version is a hypnotic, softly spun delight, with echoing organ motifs, bubbly electronics, opaque synth sounds and new spoken word snippets (provided by fellow German artist Jan Delay) gently rising above a deep, dubby bassline and sparse, shuffling tech-house beats. Over on the flip, there's a dub style 'Version' mix that takes the track further into vintage Rhythm & Sound territory.

Review: Hot Casa France reissue a sultry drum workout from master Turkish darbouka player Yasar Akpence's 2004 album 'Passion Percussion'. 'Desert wind' layers unbelievably tight darbouka trills and phrases over a pulsing, almost dembow-esque core, making for a perfect Balearic DJ tool for any occasion. We can imagine this one bookending hypnotic techno wormholes in a small hours Donato Dozzy set, with its wide stereo drum intrusions and tight production longing to be aired off a suitably weighty soundsystem. Very little to no information exists about the songstress, but thanks to Stainless Soul Records head Mike Ward, this deep dive into the soul crate is being pressed for the rest of the world to hear on vinyl for what may be the first time. This is a two-sided affair (not to be mixed up by the label misprinting), with Side A's 'School Me' being a box-ticking disco-soul dance track contains everything you could possibly want from 90s soul-dance. Flip over to side B for a slow jam soul ballad 'Tricky Sticky Situation', a modern-day Romeo and Juliet story of yearning through a divide. Extremely limited and super rare, get your hands on this underappreciated 90s gem while you still can. Hopefully a sign of more to come from Stainless in the soul and dance department.

Review: Oooh! Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You" definitely belongs in the canon of all time modern soul classics. Taken from her 2001 second album Mahogany Soul, the Swizz Beats produced track made optimum usage of an O' Jays sample and was instrumental in that LP going gold and propelling the former D'Angelo collaborator to stardom. It also inspired countless official and under the counter remixes with Blaze's perhaps the most recognisable. So yes this reissue on 7" from Outta Sight is worthy if you don't have the original in your collection and features a housed up remix from Hex Hector on the flip.

Review: Mystery surrounds the story behind this edit-style two-tracker - and, indeed, the identity of Baggy Leggins and Duke Hobo themselves - but there's much to admire about it. Check first A-side 'Keep Marching', where a lightly beefed up and housed-up semi-acoustic groove offers a platform for sweet, bilingual female lead vocals, jaunty guitars and simmering strings. It's a genuine dancefloor revision, but one that will suit Balearic DJs and confirmed party starters as much as dusty-fingered crate diggers and selector sorts. 'Shuffleupagus', meanwhile, sees the mystery artist cut up and tool up a vaguely familiar Latin workout with predictably energetic and party-starting results.

Review: The Bayara Citizens dropped the original 'Ju/Ru Music' 7" on Joe Clausell's Sacred Rhythm label back in 2006. It has become a rather pricey little 45 prm that now gets reissued as two different, dubbed out Afro rhythms with swirling guitar licks. The Afrikan Art opener on the a-side is full of sunshine and Latin vibes thanks to the superbly plucked strings and shuffling groves, while the flip is the Afrikan dub Drum Drums version - darker, more percussive more moody. Both sides bring something different to any dub set.

Here for MotorCity Wine he revisits his Back To Bahia series with a third volume that finds him flexing his Afro-Brazilian deep house chops. The 7" opens up with the jazzy boogie of Lsaura' which is steeped in Minneapolis funk and will get cultured dancefloors in a spin. Review: With a catalogue that contains a mixture of mind-altering chuggers, deep house, disco and Balearic beats, second-guessing what Craig Bratley will release next has always been a tricky proposition. Even so, joining forces with Brooklyn maverick - and honey-voiced singer - Amy Douglas for a spot of bleeping revivalist synth soul was one of them. Douglas is at her emotive best on the B-side original mix, singing sweetly about complicated relationships over a thrillingly lo-fi low-tempo groove rich in squelchy bass and 8-bit lead lines. The A-side 'Ashigaru Dub' is arguably even better, brilliantly re-framing the track as a heady, intoxicating and sub-heavy dub workout of the sort that Mad Professor probably knocks out in his sleep. Review: Joseph Caserta's latest sneaky seven-inch is a sequel of sorts to his 2015 single 'Ricky', a deliciously hazy and groovy deep house jam that showcased breathy spoken word snippets from disco-soul lothario Rick James. This time round, the Boston-based producer and KON collaborator has decided to rework James' classic 'Give It To Me Baby' in honour of the track's 40th birthday. He presents a fabulous multi-track edit on side A, rightfully showcasing James' brilliant vocals, Latin-inspired horn lines and colourful synth sounds. He totally re-invents the track on the flip, placing snippets of James' vocals at the heart of a dark, dense, organ-rich early morning house workout.

Review: With Valentine's Day just around the corner, Caserta and the rest of the Bridge Boots crew have decided to offer-up something decidedly glassy-eyed and loved-up - specifically two fresh bootleg re-makes of Teddy Pendergass's 1978 Philadelphia Soul classic "When Somebody Loves You Back". The seven-inch singles boasts two distinctively different versions. On the A-side you'll find the "Rooftop Mix", a striped-back blend of dub disco and boogie in which Pendergrass's fine vocals rise above a rubbery bassline, colourful '80s soul synths and toe-tapping beats. Over on the B-side Caserta flips the script, layering selected snippets of Pendergrass's vocal over a deep, dark and bass-heavy house groove. It's sub-titled the "Basement Dub" and that's exactly what it is.

Review: Having previously worked his magic on classic cuts from Diana Ross, Luther Vandross and Teddy Pendergrass - among others - Bridge Boots boss Caserta has now moved on to Marvin Gaye. He's grabbed the acapella from a classic song - in this case one of Gaye's duets with Diana Ross, "My Mistake (Was To Love You)"- and incorporated it into a brand new track. The A-side "Casey Mistake Mix" sits somewhere between early '80s boogie and the mid-80s proto-house sound created by Boyd Jarvis, Timmy Regisford and Paul Simpson. Interestingly, Gaye and Ross's vocals fit it like a glove. The flipside "Dub That Got Away" is an altogether more bumpin' garage-house workout rich in cut-up vocals snippets and wobbly analogue bass.

Here he gets to tackle his own super 7" on the Bridge Boots label and first off he serve sup a lovely take on a Stevie Wonder tune. 'Stevie?' (Caserta Sunday Saint mix) has mid-tempo grooves rolling away nicely beneath exquisite synth work and a well-treated vocal from the man himself. JoDaCe steps up on the flip for a Saturday Sinner mix that is more driving and ready for the club. The bass is rugged, the vocals more looped and freaky, the effect just as brilliant but in different ways.

Review: Although he made his name beefing up disco and boogie tunes, Casual Connection has used his Edits imprint - a spin-off from his clothing brand of the same name - to showcase tasty reworks of hip-hop, R&B and New Jack Swing jams. He's at it again on this fourth "45" in the series. A-side, 'Juicy Tells Him' is particularly potent, with the Aussie rework king cannily combining a much-loved rap acapella with punchy electronic beats, sturdy electronic bass and the kind of Korg M-1 organ riff more often associated with bassline or '90s U.S garage jams. Review: Casual Connection is a master of mash up and is back to stake his claim on that title once more here on the effectively titled Edits label. This red hot double shot kicks off with 'Message Like It's Hot', which as you can probably guess form the title alone mixes up a Snoop Dogg classic with a stoney cold hip-hop classics. It's the bars of the former that are dropped over the shimmering lead synth and 80s analogue beats of the latter to make for something simply irresistible. 'Witness Up' is another big one with two more hip hop cuts smashed together in seamless and effortless fashion. Pure fire.

Review: For the latest volume in their Foundations series on BBE, Kai Alce and DJ Spinna have decided to reissue one of the finest records from the earliest days of Chicago house, Chip-E's spellbinding 1985 anthem "Like This". This seven-inch edition features a fresh edit of Chip-E's original cub mix on the A-side. This version is essential largely because of the quality of K-Joy's impeccable vocal, though the re-mastered sound also makes Chip-E's crunchy Roland drum machine hits, bold synth-bass and spacey lead lines sound better than ever. Turn to the flip for the heavy and stripped-back "DDD Dub" version, which makes more use of the short "Like This" vocal, which was originally provided by the Godfather of House himself, Frankie Knuckles.

Review: During the various lockdowns of 2020 and '21, Crazy P delved deep into their vaults to see what unfinished songs were lurking in the dustier corners of the archive. These were then used as inspiration for new, finished and polished versions. This seven-inch contains two fine examples of this repurposing process. A-side 'If Life Could Be This Way' is suitably strong - a heart-aching, bittersweet chunk of laidback melancholia that sits somewhere between blue-eyed soul, Balearica and hazy West Coast jazz-rock. He even made a welcome comeback in the mid 2010s and added some more magic to his cannon. Review: Daniel David (FKA Trailer Limon) makes a great impression on Bastard Jazz with his first solo record. This 7" finds him link with the Jazz Mafia for a feature after he has done plenty of work with the legendary San Francisco duo the Pendletons. Because of that he is credited with helping to kickstart the Bay Area's modern funk resurgence but here he shows he has plenty of his own skills too. 'Tambor De Cura' (with Guinu) is bustling jazz that is vibrant and vivacious with big horns, steamy jungle atmospheres, humid pads, bird calls and many other great details that form a hefty groove. 'Devotion' is then a funky jazz fusion with cosmic pads and lush vocals.

Review: Davie is a brand new singing for Defected who grew up with a father who was a pastor in the local church. That is where he eventually start this own journey and with elements of Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson added in, he now lands with a fully formed, heart swelling soul sound. The title track is a catchy and funky house track that while the remix is a bit more Balearic and beachy. Like the other one, this 45 pulls out plenty of the Cuban influences Dez is known for. A-side 'Debes Llorar' is all life-affirming chords that fans of his classic 'New 4 U' will recognise, but stitched over ticking and raw drum beats with a Latin shuffle and Spanish vocals. Review: Only a week after his last outing on this label, DJ DSK is making another return with more of his masterful edits. Volume 6 finds him open up with 'Remind Me,' which is a soulful and jazzy jam, with tumbling drums and nice wet claps. The vocal is the real winner, though, as it tugs at those heart strings. Flip it over and you'll find the much bigger anymore bumping 'Knee Deep' which has myriad recognisable samples all reworked into a party ready hip hop funk joint for the b-boys and girls out there.

Review: Active as a DJ from the late 70s, it wasn't until the end of the 80s that Carlo Trojo AKA Don Carlos unveiled his studio talents with his single, 'Alone', which quickly grew to cult status within the international deep house scene. He soon became known for a sound that delicately combined house rhythms with Afro-American jazz influences, flecks of disco, hints at progressive house and occasional flashes of electronic soul. Review: The Mountain 45 label has been giving us some unique music that cross genres since its inception just a few years ago. Like previous editions, Double A contributes 'Super Badman Riddim' which is both catchy and clever. Featuring James Brown samples thrown in the mix takes this dub related track to the limit of fun. For the B-side, James Nasty's 'Fan Dem Off' with a peak time party song that should take the dancefloor to another level. These attention getters are ideal for being addictively fun and different. It's hard to categorise music like this, which is a sign of its originality.

On side A, the legendary Dimitri From Paris gets his mitts on Double Dee's 1990 number 'Found Love', re-imagining it as a colourful blend of rubbery nu-disco and hands-in-the-air piano house that rightly places Dany's recognisable lead vocal front and centre. Flip for label chiefs' Micky More and Andy Tee's take on Jestofunk's 1993 classic 'Say It Again'. The opener is 'Freak At Night' with stiff synth stabs and strident drums that get the party pumping while the belting vocal brings the soulful hook. Absolute dynamite. Things are a little more loose on the flip with 'Bit-O-Honey' having more jangling drums and guitar riffs underpinned by a funky bass riff. Review: Athens Of The North can usually be found honing their expert craft of unearthing nigh impossible to find disco, and reissuing it in the utmost quality. However, the work of East Coast Love Affair (Euan Fryer and Nick Moore) is deceiving, as it adopts the image of one of said reissues while actually being fully contemporary music. 'Get Down' tops up a slew of master-quality releases for the label, expropriating a vocal line from obscure Minneapolis 'lo-fi' band Quiet Storm and putting it back into an entirely new, drunk-and-high instrumental context (think lasers, whistles, funk basses, an overall hazy sound). 'Can You Deal', on the flip, lends Quiet Storm a similar treatment, albeit for a cleverly hi-lo-fi disco house treatment.

Review: It's time to don your leathers and strap in for another ride on go-slow master Eddie C's Read Motorbike. This time out the Canadian deep disco specialist kicks off his latest 7" with 'D8 With The Rain.' As always it is a super smooth groove that is smartly embellished with dusty old samples that tug at the heart. 'Sweet Honey' is a sunny one with plenty of joyous little chords and a carefree groove that flaps and slaps away down low. Easy to love, hard to pull-off grooves once again from the evergreen Eddie C.
