Review: 29 years after Crispin J Glover and David Jenkins AKA DJ Shakra delivered their first single as Caucasian Boy, the Strictly Rhythm signed, TB-303 powered heaviness of 'Northern Lights', the long-serving producers have decided to reunite for a new single on Music For Freaks. It's something of a surprise, but a more than welcome one. Lead track 'Remote Control' is breathlessly brilliant all told, a six-and-a-half-minute retro-futurist odyssey in which warehouse-ready synth stabs and duelling acid lines spar atop a hybrid house-meets-electro beat. Almost as impactful is 'Dystopia', a pitched down acid house stomper that boasts subtle references to all manner of killer 1990s house and techno jams. This 20th such EP comes from William Caycedo and he nails a groove from the first time you drop the needle on the record. Review: It's five up for the CCCP Edits label which deals in serving up nicely reworked jams from house and disco's past. The eponymous and mysterious production team is in fine form here with four more cuts out of Russia that all have Cyrillic names but have been transliterated for English audiences which means '??? ???? ????' becomes 'Moi Drug Tima'. It's a funky cut with house and disco elements over a punchy break. 'Ektoplazma' is rugged electro that races through the stars and 'BBC' is a heavyweight tech-house stomper. 'Choovak' closes with more rough-edged grooves.

Review: We were rather impressed by the first volume in the CCCP Edits series, a re-edit imprint seemingly dedicated to offering up reworks of obscure, largely unknown musical gems from Soviet-era Russia, so hopes are sky-high for this second instalment. We shouldn't have worried. Opener "Nochi" is a deep, woozy and off-kilter chunk of two-step garage/jazz-funk fusion, while "Ne Mojet Bit" is the most Balearic electro track we've heard in yonks. The fun continues on the flip, where the glassy-eyed deep pop-goes-two-step flex of "T=H2O" comes accompanied with the hip-house era breakbeat-house warmth (and jazzy keys) of standout track "Hare, Krishna".

Review: Florin Buchel's work as Contra Communem Opinionem has bridged the gap between seemingly disparate labels like Lux Rec, Mathematics, Drumpoet Community and Photic Fields without missing a beat. More recently, he's funnelled the CCO output through his own label Silum to bring us some EPs of dazzling hardware tech house with ample melodic content to keep the dark clouds at bay. 'Atmospheric Inversion' toys with jazzy discord, but the vibe is primarily soulful and synth-driven, while 'Atmospheric Extinction' heads wholeheartedly towards uplifting chord sequences to get your hair standing on end. 'Atmospheric Pressure' takes a snappier, techier approach but the tools and signal chains are the same, so the pervading warmth of the tracks maintains. This is house music which instinctively connects back to the gritty strain of machine soul pioneered in Detroit - if you're always searching for that quality in your club tracks you won't want to overlook this one.

Review: First released in 2006, 'Ceerial Port' is the ultimate wildcard in the electro profligate Ceephax's towering discography. The seven-or-eight track album does things with the electro form that few of Mr. Jenkinson's contemporaries would dare ever indulge, were it not for this initial fatherly stamp of approval. lead reissue cut 'Acid Whorl' is the foremost case in point, hard-limiting and soft-clipping a cyclonic 'whorlwind' of pitch-whacked acid effluence. Further 8-bit playtimes come in the form of 'Acid Highway' and 'Acid Causeway', recalling the feeling of scouring the outer edges of an Atari Kart game and encountering nothing but rolling, pixelated skies; 'Tough Grugoy Acid' and 'Woodlice Acid' make up the longer wavelengths on the spectrum, stomping and echo-rimshotting to ever-weighty, yet jolly ends.

Review: Qir's Lowlife Cartel label has been offering up sinuous strains of techno and electro since 2017, focusing on VA releases to keep the scope of the label broad, and preferring to focus on loose themes for each record. This time around, Kodoku opens up with Saverio Celestri's bubbling acid-electro before Delta and Prince De Takicardie plunge into wondrous sci-fi excursions for those who like their techno springy, supple and downright freaky. There's some distinctly different sounds on the B-side, as Koste spits and snarls over 'Brick To The Face' by Tundramane. Solar Alliance take things in a more cosmic, trance-minded direction, and Shampoo finish proceedings off with a curious slice of mournful breakbeat synth pop, if you can imagine such a combo.

Review: Three distinctly outer space-themed cuts from Greece's Alex Celler, each with a linear minimal/tech skeleton that has other, interloping musical influences draped elegantly and classily across it. 'Ancient Astronuats' has the weird, wired mystical stirrings of early Black Dog about it, complete with melting, bendy electro notations that coax it along and add a psychedelic dimension. 'Stargate To Cosmos' has a playful, Drexciyan feel to it, with crunchy, organic drum beats flirting alongside the more rigid electrics. 'Object In The Sky' is the most minimal of the pack, sleek and stalker-like, but still contains enough action - mainly floating around up there in the ether - to hold and build attention.

Review: Marseille based Rafael Cerato is known for his emotional techno sound that has been heard on top labels like Diynamic Music, Stil Vor Talent, and his very own Ritual. He's also become quite the staple on Marc Romboy's Systematic Recordings, which back in 2015 released his anthemic 'Sekater', a sublime expression in dancefloor drama which still sounds as good today. It is a full throttle house outing that opens with yelping diva vocals and retro baselines on 'Can't Pay My Bills'. Things get paired back to deeper, more menacing drums and bass on 'Ay Papi' and then it is over to French legend D'julz remix for a pair of B-side remixes. The first one brings his signature low end tech grooves with some bleeping melodies and the second one is a lovely warm dub for basement deployment.

Review: Cesare vs Disorder has long been at the very heart of the minimal scene. His abstract sounds and lush synthesis never fails to seduce us no matter the mood or groove he takes. This EP for the small but well formed Rockets label opens with some peak tripped-out sound design, where dancing chords, detuned keys and wonky pins are layered up over a loopy and skeletal rhythm on 'Amoreteca.' 'Sao Paulo Concrete Jungle' is dubber house all aswarm with pads, hits, percussive clatter, 'Holy Bee' gets unsettling in its eerie melodies and 'Time For Your Eyes' is a lovely deep house gem with a jostling beat and lounge chords.

Review: Here comes an all new and unknown edits labels with some playful disco house jams packed with characterful samples from Chaka Kenn. 'Dawn Breaker' opens up with freewheeling melodies and loose drum breaks that makes for a nice sunny vibe run through with jazzy Rhodes action. Review: Kerri Chander's sound is so unique it almost deserves its only genre. He brings more musicality to house than almost anyone and for that reason is often called the Stevie Wonder of the genre. His latest album is a real labour of love that saw him write each of the tunes on the very dance floor of the clubs that are mentioned in each title. In some cases, he used found sounds, calculated the delay of kicks off a wall to phase them through a mix and even record himself playing on a green room piano at Printworks to use in the final tune. It might be the best album of his career and a selection of the tunes from it make it onto this third essential sampler.

Review: As the title suggests, this four-tracker from the mighty Kerri Chandler is made of material recorded in - but for whatever reason never released - in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He first unfurls 'What Shall We Do', a sturdy but snappy New Jersey deep house number rich in attractive organ stabs, warming bass and bluesy lead vocals from 'Grampa', before unveiling the squelchy acid bass, dreamy pads, colourful melodic flourishes and loved-up harmony vocals of 'Tonight'. What he brought to the world of deep house was real musicality, as well as hefty, signature kicks that have a seemingly impossible amount of weight and bounce, but also funk. He is back with a first album in years later on in 2022 but first he is teasing us all with plenty of samplers from it. We get two more tunes here - the first 'Never Thought' with those trademark kicks, a nice vocal and some peak time tech energy. Review: Man like Kerri Chandler is very much breaking the mold by still being right up there as one of the best in the game despite having had such a long career already. His 'You're In My System' came initially back in 1982 then got some remixes from Dance Quin in Ibadan in 2019 and now the original extended club mix and one of those Quin dubs get pressed up to a vital white vinyl 12" on Kaoz Theory. The A-side sounds as good as ever - heartfelt and vocal laced deep house with punchy kicks and rich pianos. The dub is no less vital with florid string samples and nice weighty grooves.

Review: Compton's own Channel Tres has been making waves since he first popped up in 2018, signing to majors and dropping some heavyweight collabs with the likes of SG Lewis, Robyn and Emotional Oranges. It's a good opportunity to track back then to his first records, being reissued by his regular stomping ground of Godmode. What has made Channel Tres so instantly appealing is his smart embrace of deep house on tracks like 'Controller', which place him in a similar sphere to the likes of Galcher Lustwerk. Review: After he made such an impact with his debut EP in 2018, Compton-based hip-house hero Channel Tres made good on his burgeoning reputation with his second release the year after. Black Moses might nod to Isaac Hayes, but there's nothing throwback about the sound as Tres rides all kinds of sparkling fresh electronic beats with a focus on deep house. Review: Chaos In The CBD have quietly been building an impressive reputation for some time, with releases on Hot Haus, Amadeus and Needwant all hitting the spot. Here they transfer to Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section International with what's arguably their most mature and musically expansive EP to date. There's a decidedly dusty, eyes-closed deep house feel throughout, with hypnotic grooves laden with all manner of neat, often jazz inspired touches. This is perhaps most obvious on the St Germain style jazz-house goodness of "Observe" - all skipping cymbals, bouncy grooves and killer pianos - but can also be found on the deeper "Observe". It's there, too, on the lilting brilliance of "Midnight In Peckham" - think yearning trumpets and twinkling piano motifs - and the blissful "Luxury Motivation".

Review: Kiwi siblings Chaos In The CBD have long been a reliable source of deep house, though in recent times their releases have tended towards the deliciously dubby and ultra-deep. Ton their latest two-tracker, they return to the woozy, warm, chunky, jazz-flecked deepness that has long been their calling card. Title track 'Intimate Fantasy' is particularly special, with the duo dousing a chunky bassline and loose-limbed deep house beats in glistening jazz guitar, sun-splashed chords and languid melodic motifs. Review: Kiwi brothers Chaos In The CBD return to Mule Musiq with their third EP for the long running Japanese label. They are in fine form throughout, offering up cuts that combine great ideas and intriguing musical motifs with just the right amount of serious dancefloor grunt. They're in full on saucer-eyed mode on A-side "Hydrate", a breakbeat-sporting deep house roller whose extended ambient intro, swirling chords, whispered vocal samples, gentle acid lines and early '90s U.S garage stabs combine to create a suitably loved-up vibe. Review: First available digitally earlier in the year and now finally out on wax, this tidy 12" showcases a quartet of killer cuts from the studios of In Dust We Trust co-founders, Chaos in the CBD (New Zealand-born siblings Ben and Louis Helliker-Hales) and Jon Sable. The trio offer up two collaborative cuts, both of which give different spins on the fusion of dub techno and hypnotic deep house. Review: Lo-fi house lovers Chaos In The CBD make their Fabric debut with a new mix CD and LP, contributing their wares to the latter's fresh mix Presents series, which came about after the end of the FABRICLIVE series and has seen to the likes of Sherelle, Octo Octa and Marbou State also feature. This 22-track extravaganza is noted to have been Fabric's most challenging licensing ordeal to date, having to polish a variety of sonic gemstones including by The Logic Box, Box Clever and Psychedelic Research Lab. Clearly, the relative obscurity of the names on the CD make this the duo's ode to 'hidden' house. Their original track 'Higher Elavation', meanwhile, cements this mysterious mood with surreptitious basses and smoggy pads.

Review: Toolroom welcomes exciting new prospect Max Chapman to their flagship label. He burst onto the scene three years ago with great releases on Elrow, Snatch, Viva and Lost. He teams up with up and coming maestro George Smeddles here for two quality jams on this great EP. "Zulu" on the A side is the kind of rolling and funky tech house that just reeks of White Isle hedonism and will appeal to fans of Lost, Material Series or Knee Deep in Sound. On the flip "Charger" will absolutely blow the doors off any venue with its pounding groove and wall of bass which you could imagine Marco Carola or Paco Osuna playing at peak time in the main room.

Review: Owl Records has another 12" that will get your head swiveling and booty shaking. It comes from the BBC 6 Music host, TV legend turned funk and soul tastemaker Craig Charles who has put together a couple of sizzling edits. First up he layers a classic Hot Chocolate sample over a rolling and rubbery beat and bassline that will pump any dancefloor. On the flip is a more slow and seductive sound in 'Rok On' with its funky bass and sleazy vocals over low-slung and slo-mo beats. Add in the playful trumpets and muted string and you have a brilliantly curious and compelling cut.

Review: Charm cooks up some seriously deep and richly harmonic new grooves here for the Flaneurecordings label. Opener 'Love Is Music' is a spine-tingling affair with soft, cuddly drums way down low and a buttery smooth baritone voice akin to Barry White muttering up top next to steamy female coos. It's pure vibes. 'Floating Sentiently' is another cocooning deep house groove with diffuse pads and gentle drum rotations then 'Music Means Life' is a downbeat love affair with lush chords and cosmic twinkles that's as much the soundtrack to a sunny afternoon as it is a late night romance.
