Review: Few countries do minimal better than the Romanians, and it has been that way now for well over a decade. PhonicHouse1 is one of the more recent labels to emerge from the country, and this is its fourth release. It takes the form of a collaborative EP between Anas M and Farid Odibekov with a couple of tasty remixes. 'Dozhd' is first up and is a nice languid and loose tech house groove with bulbous synths and dry drums. Mikhu makes it a much fuller sound with myriad cosmic details then 'Sneg' is a pumper with farting bass sounds and snares encircling you on the dance floor. A Vern remix is filled with pent up but coy funk and bubbling arps.

Review: The twisted and trance-infused progressive techno sound of Les Disques De La Jungle is one we have been keen to hear more from, and here we have it: a new EP featuring some of the artists who have already dropped heat here. AV1 goes first with the crispy metal drums and warped synths of 'Meta2' then Fsk24 & Felix Dulac combine for the hammering tech-funk of 'Un Eclair Dans La Nuit' which would have been a Tyrant classic back in the day. Fsk24 then hooks up with Nils for the stomping and noen-lit jungle-tech of 'Toomai Des Elephants' before partnering with Solal Reyes for the tripped out but driving closer 'Tongue Twister'.

Mark Knight's label has mastered the art of maximal sounds and this eighth volume of the Tooroom Sampler series is another one that will do plenty of damage. Essel's 'Sweat' is a rigid tech cut with stiff synths and libidinous vocals, then Shiba San and Ayarez get direct with shuffling tech house cut 'Twist It' complete with big skewed synths. Friend Within's 'Pilka' keeps the energy levels high with fizzing synth loops over textured drums and a fat bassline. Maur x Westend and Cami Bear close out with some brighter melodies to get hands in the air on 'Over.'

Review: Mannheim tech house machine Fabe has been on an unstoppable roll in the past few years, notching up top drawer releases for respected labels like Shall Not Fade, Constant Sound and Cecille. Now he brings that heat to PIV Limited, resulting in a set of workouts which will get any party pumped up in all the right ways. 'Skip & Tap' is a twitchy, freaky workout peppered with fine detail and a relentless groove, while 'Street Scale' has dirty drums and a tweaked sound palette all of its own. 'Shout Out The Box' toys with playful synth lines and a heavy swing which calls to mind the sound of SlapFunk Records and then Alexander Skancke steps up for a remix of 'Step & Tap' which heads into more streamlined, heads-down territory.

Review: Wisdom Teeth co-boss Facta joins the cats on Incienso with this beautify and wide-armed four track 12". Packed with all flavours you'd expect from the young producer, and more, we're treated to a whole menu of vibes. 'Emeline' starts the trip with a jacking, trippy house note that's comparable to the old Classic Music grooves. It's in good company as 'Felt' soothes the soul with its super woozy, off-key waves, the bumpy rolling breakbeat bleeps of 'Mirage' give us pep and the wonderfully dreamy downbeat sludge of 'Sick Pup' sends us off to the cosiest corners of our mind. The main one wriggles and writhes with an ice cold electro spirit while Dorisburg's 'beats remix' proceeds to space things out even more, adding even more intensity and drama. I Think I Like It (Record Store Day RSD 2023) (red vinyl 7")

Review: For those too young to remember the days of glitch-house and electro-house at the turn of the noughties (think Herve, Switch, Claude Vonstroke etc), Fake Blood was one of the true masters of the style. He released a swathe of big records for Cheap Thrills and others, with the two tracks collected here - both of which date from 2009 - being the biggest. A-side 'I Think I Like It' is a superb example of the style, with the producer expertly cutting up a pleasingly silly and over-the-top disco-pop number and turning it into sweat-soaked, hands-aloft gold. 'Mars', meanwhile, gains its dancefloor power from a frankly filthy, mind-altering bassline-turned-lead-line, around which crispy drums, breakbeats and Mylo-esque synth stabs make their presence felt.

Review: Nation of Jak offshoot Dirty Blends was established by label chief Melvin Oliphant as a vehicle for "interpretations" and "homages" - in plain-speak hush-hush reworks, tribute tracks and those that sample liberally. The label's latest release is a compilation of sorts, featuring as it does cuts from a trio of artists. The Falcon steps up first with title track 'Sound The Alarm', a raw, jacking, bouncy and positive mind-melding blend of lo-fi synth stabs, sweat-soaked beats, fire alarm noises and restless drum machine fills. Over on side B, Grizzly Knuckles' 'Mad Bell' - a breathless, house tempo techno workout built around a nagging synth-bell loop - is followed by label regular The Jak's 'Aftermath', which sits somewhere between jacking lo-fi techno, UK funky and stab-happy Soca-house.

Review: Those pesky Swedish pranksters Studio Barnhus always like to surprise and subvert with the music they make and release and it is fair to say we never expected to find FaltyDL on their well regarded label. It finds the accomplished New Yorker paying homage to deep house while also updating the classic template. 'Our House Is Barnhus' is run through with serene strings as the paddy drums uplifting you and sprinklings of percussion keep things classy. 'Gut Punch' is the one though - a steamy and deep cut that channels early Prescription and Pepe Braddock into something beautiful.

Review: Fango lives in Venice in the middle of nowhere and works in a home studio when not practicing with his live band of the same name. He has been serving up his own take on techno for over a decade now and that vast majority of it has come on Degustibus Music.This is his first EP for a while and as ever it is well designed and atmospheric. Review: Italian producer Fango has been busily building up his own sound world via his Degustibus Music label, but now he makes a strident move into the wider world with this outstanding record for Running Back. The authoritative tech house label knows its onions, and you can tell why they were drawn to these distinctive, inventive twists on the formula. 'Dimetrodonte' in particular is the kind of freaky workout which will get people paying close attention thanks to some artful vocal sample juggling, while there's some subtly anthemic joy to be felt in the likes of 'Diplodoco' which once again finds original ways to express classic ideas in the tech house tradition.

Review: For the first time ever, Basic Spirit has enlisted an artist who isn't in-house to contribute to its fine catalogue. And there is no one finer for that honour than Fantastic Man, a legend in the game with a fantastically fresh sound no matter what style he turns his hand to. He kicks off with 'Spiritual Guidance' which is pacey, spacey house music with real synth serenity. 'The Beach' brings broken beats and sot acid manoeuvres next to rueful piano chords. 'Novara' then appears twice on the flip in two different versions - a Progressive Fantasy which lifts you off your feet and takes you amongst the stars, and a darker and more moody Progressive Mindfuck.

Review: Hot Creations has now been rolling out the club friend, crowd pleasing jams for over a decade and well over 200 releases. But still they manage to unearth new names and potent sounds to keep people going back for more. It's Jay Farina and Quinzi who combine on two slammers here. First up is 'Pumpin The Junk', a fat-bottomed house cut with robust drum wallops, raved up horn stabs and a sleazy vocal. On the backside is a more tribal cut. Review: Simona Faraone's label, New Interplanetary Melodies, welcomed Feel Fly for an EP that is "inspired by the ancient and mysterious Etruscan culture, whose peoples inhabited the historical-geographical region of central Italy." He hails from Italy himself of course and has written soundtracks for movies as well as great dancefloor tunes. The tracks here combine dreamy melodies with hurried breakbeats, corrugated acid techno jams and 90s post-rave house sounds that carry you on waves of blissed-out pads. It adds up to an EP that feels steeped in ancient ritual as well as having one eye on the future.

Review: When it comes tech house, Eats End Dubs's Eastenderz label is right up there with the best of them. This time out the 55th outing comes from Julian Fijima. As always it's a fine distillation of tech, dub and house with a hint of garage thrown in too on opener 'Get Funky', then 'Destructive Rhythm' brings rave synth stabs and dark vocals. 'Optional Illusion' has more molten acid lines run through its midst and last of all is the best of the lot - the percussive swing of 'How It's Going Down.'

Review: The Report label out of Russia rolls out a third tasteful house offering here to start 2024 off right. It's a split EP which first has Fillimonov showcasing his house sound on 'MIR'. It's both deep and dreamy yet dynamic with a distant pop vocal up top and bleeding synths keeping it fresh. 'Amrm' is another unique mix of less than standard vocals up top over the sort of pillow beats that you get on All Day I Dream. Arkady Antsyrev offers more rubbery, bouncy deep house on the flip with 'Chrsh Th D' featuring the one and only Sade and 'Arkady Antsyrev' layering intimate spoken words into supple drums.

Review: 'Nameless Remixes' is a fresh 12" single of minimal/tech house bubblers, offshooting from the 2018 album Nameless by Dominique Fils-Aime, a Canadian singer-songwriter who blends soul, jazz and blues with social commentary. Producers Ohm Hourani, Ben Neven, Ben Vedren and Flabbergast handle sensitive treatment of the elements of Fils Aime's originals, emphasising house and broken beat with an organic touch. All four indulge a mindful palette with plenty of headroom, occupied by walking basses, punky drum wallops, and melodic hazes, of which our favourite is Flabbergast's Flying remix.

Review: Razor-N-Tape is a bastion of deep house brilliance as once again perfectly exemplified by this vibrant new package from Flamingo Pier. New Zealand collective Flamingo Pier have dropped several well received 12"s on the Soundway Records label and then came good with 2021's self titled full length. They are still all about bringing happy, sunny vibes to a tropical disco template here with the likes of the synth lead 'How 2 Feel' then funky vocal pumper 'Remedy'. There are cosmic rays lighting up the big chords and aloof vocals of 'Beneath The Neon' then a couple of remixes on the flip bring more dubby disco-house sounds.

Review: After dropping a killer three-tracker from Spiri:tual and a similarly impressive multi-artist EP, Enfasi Records returns with the label's first and only 12" of 2022: a quietly confident four-tracker from prolific producer Floog, who has previously released on labels including Mulen, Visionquest, Atipic and Tartouffe (amongst others). There's plenty of playable, peak-time-ready material on show across the 12", from the bubbly sequenced bass, kick-drum-driven beats and spacey electronics of opener 'About That', to the shoulder-swinging tech-house funk of 'Speak & Spell' (whose jaunty but weighty bassline is a treat) and the classical tece melodiousness of 'Anaris', where chiming, rising and falling lead lines and ultra-dreamy pads catch the ear.

Review: Skylax has always operated in its own world. The French label has never bowed to - or tried to set - trends, instead it just focuses on traditional house sounds that never go out of fashion. Sting The Floor is another such EP, this time from Floorfillers. The title track opens up with grinding synth phrases over nice loose drums while 'Slammer' is lit up with bright Philly disco strings and hurried house beats. 'That End Song' is a classic end-of-the-night piano house jam and 'Take A Blast' layers up gurgling acid with low slung drum swings. 'We Are In The House' is the breezy closer complete with bendy guitar riffs. A nice diverse EP for sure.

Review: Detroit don Floorplan aka Robert Hood has mastered the art of the loop. He knows how to distill voices, drums and synths to their core components and then let them roll endlessly. The results are magnificently captivating and the case of this last, gospel-tinged and potent enough to get even the most ardent atheists believing. Look no further than the turbocharged gospel-tech and impassioned choral cries of 'We Give Thee Honor' for evidence. Less grinding ad a little more silky is the uplifting house sound of 'Makes Me Wanna' on the flip. Two magnificent cuts courtesy of Classic here.
