  5. RIYL Failures (9:32)
Review: While the name may be new, A New Line (Related) is supposedly the work of an already established musician, although Kimochi was never a label that cared about hype. The music stands just fine on its own, digging into the kind of dusty and dusky house and techno formations that the label has forged its hand-sprayed identity on. There's plenty of ambient techno twirls to be enjoyed on the likes of "Dancing On Soft Borders", while the beats melt away entirely on "After A Short Illness" and grandiose EP closer "RIYL Failures". Once again Kimochi comes up with the kind of meaningful variations on the 4/4 framework that keep our record bags full and our souls enriched.

  2. Photo Funk (7:20)
  3. Bassoon (6:16)
  4. Cable Talk (7:19)
Review: Techno heads with an appreciation of forgotten and almost-lost gems will be happy with this one. Mark Ambrose's 'Dimensions' first saw the light of day on Steve O'Sullivan's Mosaic way, way back in 1997, and here is finally remastered for the modern world. And what a treat it is. A shining example of just how compelling, addictive and inescapable tracks can be without needing to be particularly hard, those looking for adjectives will find them in the likes of tough, solid and crisp. The four tracks all follow a similar trajectory, deep but purposeful dancefloor stuff where sub bass rules and alien noises become warbling hooks- not leat on 'Cable Talk'. Those looking to stomp in the dark may find 'Signs 'N' Lights' is the go-to, 'Photo Funk' is pure darkroom mechanical groove and 'Bassoon' a sharp tech builder.

  3. Egopusher - "Flake" (Jimi Jules remix) (6:25)
  4. Ed Ed & Petja Virikko - "Sundroina" (feat Jinadu - Jimi Jules remix) (7:18)
Review: Zurich based DJ and producer Jimi Jules is one of the most promising upcoming artists within the international underground. With previous releases on top labels like Superfriends, Cocoon and local imprint Zukunft - he tops all that by being picked as selector for esteemed Berlin institution Watergate's 24th mix album. Here we get treated to a few exclusives from the mix on special vinyl format: on the first side we have Jules & Jesaya's +4 BPM Update of Ame's "119 BPM", there's also his collaboration with Domenico Ferrari on the sleazy lo-slung pop of "Parkuhr". On the flip, we soon discover its almost entirely a Jimi Jules affair (naturlich!) with his remix of Swiss/German duo Egopusher's "Flake" (venturing into truly sublime territory) and the dreamy and bittersweet tones of Ed Ed & Petja Virikko's "Sundroina" (feat Jinadu).

  1. Track 1 (4:52)
  2. Track 2 (6:38)
  3. Track 3 (8:42)
Review: We last heard from "vinyl-faced artist" Apparel Wax back in January, when the man (or woman) of mystery unleashed a second scorching EP of high-grade deep house on Apparel Music. For EP number three, the Son of Sleeveface takes a different tack. The untitled opener, for example, is a layered, floor-friendly, jazz dance-friendly sample collage full of vintage funk drum breaks, swinging percussion solos, fluid jazz piano solos and less than subtle nods towards hip-house. While a little messy, it's undeniably enormous fun. "Track 2" sees old wax-chops beef up and slightly weird out a jaunty, horn-heavy Afro-funk cut, while the flipside excursion is a romping deep house revision of a swirling and chiming '80s soul hit.

Hark (12")
Cat: MM 147. Rel: 13 Mar 12
  1. Hark
  2. Hark (Vakula remix)
  3. Forever
Review: It's been two years since Barnt put out his first record on his own Magazine imprint, and his foundation in experimental techno lends itself well to his depiction of mesmerising house. "Hark" has a deep, organic sound built around a powerful bass line and tribal percussion. The track breaks off into two operatic textures, slotting against each other like perfect lovers, while a playful lead line makes up this menage a trois. Vakula moulds "Hark" into a cinematic representation of the original, showcasing the interesting and atmospheric house he is known for. "Forever" delivers more spectacular soundtrack material, layers of sound built expertly, invoking a vivid picture in the mind.

Review: There was much gnashing of teeth from committed vinyl enthusiasts when Maurice Fulton decided to release his latest Boof full-length - the follow-up to 2011's inspired Sshh, Dandelions at Play - solely as a digital download. Having rescued that album from obscurity via a physical release, Gerd Janson has decided to do the same with The Hydrangeas Whisper, here delivering a vinyl version. Given the album's undoubted quality, it's something of a result for wax-maniacs everywhere. While Fulton takes a few odd turns - see the dubbed-out, trippy title track and after-party techno throb of "Backlash" - for the most part it's as expected, with the Chicagoan-in-London delivering a typically jazzy, disco-flecked range of sweet, life-affirming dancefloor cuts.

  1. Butch - "Shahrzad" (Matthias Meyer remix) (8:25)
  2. Henrik Schwarz - "Take Words In Return" (Jimi Jules remix) (8:57)
Review: As Summer peaks, Berlin clubbing institution Watergate brings you the brand new series where standout tracks from their discography are remixed and by some of their favourite artists. Kicking off the first instalment we have Matthias Meyer and Jimi Jules stepping up to deliver their twist on two big tunes from heavy-hitters Butch and Henrik Schwarz. First up is Meyer's remix of Butch's "Shahrzad", where he dishes out a truly timeless piece of dancefloor euphoria. With his trademark organic groove and swirling pads, Meyer guides you through a heavenly journey into the distant reaches of sonic elation. On the flip, Jimi Jules brings his A-game with a revision of Henrik Schwarz' classic "Words In Return" and in the process demonstrates an incredibly mature restraint, with precise and calculated efforts which results in an enchanting trip.

Review: Cinthie is unstoppable at the moment. Between some great releases for Aus Music, Ground Service and We_R_House, the Beste Modus boss has found time for another imprint named 803 Crystal Grooves - and this sophomore effort showcases her love of raw/jacking analogue sounds of house music's heyday. On the A side of 002 we have the powerful acid flashback "Push It" followed by the wonky percolator jack of "The Worm" reminiscent of classic Cajual/Relief Records. On the flip, we have the dry and saturated stomper "BoomBoomRoundTheRoom" with its hypnotic guitar sample doing the do.

Review: Max Cooper has long been known as a DJ and producer whose immense technical skills are matched by an open-minded desire to try different things. Bearing in this in mind, you'd expect his two-disc contribution to the long-running Balance series to be rather special. Happily, it is, with the Nottingham-raised artist doing his best to balance (sorry) his desire to do things differently with the need to entertain. That makes for a fluid, slowly shifting and hugely entertaining affair where drifting experimental ambience, dewy-eyed deep house, acid-fired electro, melodious techno and weighty rhythm tracks rub shoulders with hazy tech-house, loved-up leftfield pop, crunchy IDM and the kind of clanking, industrial-influenced compositions that defy easy categorization.

  1. Relax Your Body (6:37)
  2. Relax Your Body (Ricardo Villalobos remix) (19:33)
Review: The first release of AUTUM's secondhand series: vinyl reissues of iconic tracks from the past, brought back to life through contemporary remixes by the most influential artists of the current electronic music scene. This 1989 classic by DFX aka Italian legends Felix Imevbore and Claudio Donato features the vocals by Dr. FeelX. It has all the hallmarks of such a zeitgeist: hissing metallic reverberations of the Linn drum, squelchy and euphoric synth leads and sleazy adrenaline throughout. On this flip it is remixed by none other than Ricardo Villalobos; injecting the track with his trademark, reductionist mini-funk aesthetics and allowing you fully trip out over its nearly 20 minute duration.

Review: Brothers Disclosure bring the sound of house and more to the mainstream in incredible fashion, merging poppy vocals with basslines inspired by the likes of the Windy City's Mr Fingers and RP Boo. Furthermore there's splashes of UK styles like garage and dubstep in tracks like "Superego" and "Moving Mountains" and there's even smatterings of footwork in "Echoes". There's Ibiza-charged hits like "Nocturnal" to the skipping beats of "Holding On" that will make you think Daniel Bedingfield's made a comeback had Gregory Porter's lyrics not been there. And for some sublime club fodder check out "Hourglass".

Review: While he's previously released a fair number of EPs under a variety of aliases (Deejay Xanax, Dj Wey and Luis included), Brian Pinyero has only one DJ Python release to his name. Dude Compania, his first full-length under any pseudonym, is therefore something of a game-changer. It's rather fine, too, offering a leisurely stroll through attractively intergalactic deep house pastures in the company of tracks built around interesting, off-kilter drum patterns. Highlights are plentiful, from the glacial chords and aqueous melodies of vintage ambient house style shuffler "Todo Era Azul (Siempre Dub)" and atmospheric broken house workout "Acostados" (where field recordings of distant traffic rise above fluttering synthesizer loops and delicately programmed percussion), to the ultra-deep and positive brilliance of closer "Yo Ran (Do)".

Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing: an unlikely collaboration between celebrated Italian producer DJ Tennis and Fink, one of the longest-serving members of the extended Ninja Tune family. The latter's melancholic, heartfelt vocals are a perfect foil for Tennis's gentle and melodious backing track, which layers bubbling electronics, simmering orchestration and twinkling synthesizer motifs atop a sparse, undulating drum machine groove. If we had to tightly define it, we'd call it lilting outsider pop. On the flip you'll find the "Club Mix", which wraps Fink's vocal and cascading pianos around a tactile, soft touch house groove.

  3. Let Them Come (Gokin vocal remix) (6:34)

Review: Second time around for Dan Electro's "Let Them Come", an extra-percussive chunk toe-tapping, hip-shaking gospel house brilliance that first surfaced on the producer's 2009 album "Bite The Hand That Feeds You". Sadly his superb original version isn't present, though the fresh remixes are more than up to scratch. Greg Gauthier handles Side A, serving up vocal and instrumental takes built around Church organ stabs, restless deep house drums and a killer electronic bassline. They're rather good all told, though Gokin's flipside vocal and instrumental revisions are arguably even better. Re-imagining the track as a gospel-fired slab of dreamy deep house, Gokin smothers a driving beat in hazy chords and the kind of insatiable electric piano solos usually associated with classic 1970s jazz-funk wig-outs.

  3. I'm Missin You (6:29)
Review: Next up on Will Saul's tech house powerhouse is the return of NYC by way of New Haven maestro Drew Lustman aka FaltyDL with some energised modern hi-NRG vibes on "Wondering Mind". With its diva vocals, euphoric arpeggios and energised rhythms all working together for perfect dancefloor drama. Next up, the cleverly titled "Paradox Garage" goes for more reverse looking aesthetics on this evocative acid house tribute, awash in grainy lo-fi aesthetics, bumpy bass and jacked vocals on something reminiscent of classic 808 State. Finally on the flip, we have "I'm Missin You" which is also presented in a brazenly retro aesthetic with its grainy and saturated tape quality. Complete with Jamie Principle style vocals, disco guitar licks and all round neon-lit aesthetic which takes you back to the legendary Windy City days of Trax Records and WBMX Hot Mix radio late night sessions.

LesAlpx (limited 12")
Cat: ZEN 12517. Rel: 12 Jul 19
  1. LesAlpx (extended) (6:08)
  2. Coorabell (10:33)
Review: Sam Shepherd may have spent the last few years offering up off-kilter, jazz-fired grooves and heady ambient soundscapes, but he still knows how to rock a dancefloor. That much is proved by his first Floating Points single for almost two years. "LesAlpx (Extended)" is his most forthright, club-focused cut in ages - a thrusting chunk of rumbling, peak-time techno built around heavy bass, sweaty drums, twinkling electro piano motifs and raging, foreboding electronics. Shepherd teases in the most melodic, rush-inducing elements, introducing spacey synthesizers and dreamy chords midway through. It's breathtakingly good. Flipside "Coorabell" is similarly potent, with acid style electronics, warm chords and sun-kissed electronics wrapped around swinging, two-step influenced house beats and a weighty, sub-heavy bassline. In a word: essential.

  4. Aurora's Smile (5:30)
Review: Has Vincent Floyd released a duff record? Certainly, we've yet to hear one. Predictably, Contemplation of Deepness is another superb selection of cuts from the veteran U.S deep house producer. The title track, in particular, is gorgeous: a soft focus chunk of spacey deep house replete with whispered spoken word vocals, elongated chords and cascading synthesizer melodies. Lerosa's remix is rather good, too, and adds a little percussive grunt and rhythmic urgency without losing any of the melodious goodness. Also worth a listen is the surprisingly organic-sounding bonus cut "Aurrora's Smile", whose warmth and musical richness is emphasized by elastic jazz-funk bass guitar, ear-pleasing guitar chords and a surprisingly swinging drum track.

Review: Melbourne producer Andras Fox seems to be mellowing with age. While there's always been a breezy Balearic bent to much of his material, it used to come wrapped in the standard trappings of dancefloor-friendly deep house. This extended EP/mini-album for Mexican Summer sees him in full-on Balearic mode, layering delay-laden guitars, new age melodies and dreamy chords over a variety of shuffling, soft focus rhythms. It's an enjoyably fresh and melodious set, all told, with audible nods to the likes of Ron Trent and Larry Heard, as well as the new age ambient house sound of Cloudface, Confused House and DK. Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the chiming beauty of "So Glad", to the Vangelis-ish pulse of "Mystic Beach".

Review: Guy J's progressive house roots shine through on this first contribution to the Balance series. It's not just the sound - occasionally downtempo, always atmospheric and sometimes deliciously dreamy - but also his choice of tunes; each of the 13 tracks has been reconstructed or re-edited by the experienced Israeli producer. While this would be seen as self-indulgence in others, it gives the mix a coherence and fluidity that's never less than attractive. Wisely, he mixes it up throughout, flitting between dreamy deepness (Juan Deminicis), trippy dancefloor intensity (his edit of Radio Slave's version of APM 001's "Migrants"), picturesque goodness (Nevar's "Phases of Grief") and darting, melodic techno (Echomen).

Review: Despite being born and raised in Detroit, Luke Hess is rarely mentioned in the same breath as his Motor City peers. Then again, his brand and dub-infused techno doesn't fit neatly into the futurist narrative. This latest full-length flips the script slightly. While it has plenty of dub-flecked moments (see "Overcome" and "Humility"), there's a greater reliance on melody over mood. While this could be a reflection of the involvement of collaborator Omar-S, it's more likely an indication of Hess's development as a producer. Moving from hypnotic deep house to robust techno via beatless interludes, Keep On is Hess's most accessible set to date.
