Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Alzaya is a boutique label from Milan that has put out a select few EPs over the last three years from names such as Paula Tape. Now it kicks off a new Various Artist series with five quality tunes. Akasha System's 'Midnight Tide' is a nice neon-lit future tech cut with bubbling, soft focus melodies. Tape Hiss offers the old school piano laced joy of 'Scirocco' and Manuel Darquart slips into deep cosmic house lushness with 'Low Tide.' The mellifluous melodies keep on coming with Cosmic Cherry and Nicodemo who offer a pair of sleek and stylish sounds.

Digerital EP

Chair Fix (10:27)
Digerital (6:14)
Klenkl (6:44)
Review: Rob Amboule makes a compelling debut on Raum... musik with his 'Digerital' EP, offering a fusion of minimal, techno, and progressive trance. The three tracks exhibit Amboule's mature musical ideas and finely tuned production skills, with 'Chairfix' setting expectations with its hypnotic intro morphing into stompy, pulsating techno, evoking a state of rave euphoria and the title track offering a more banging four-to-the-floor techno with atmospheric elements and nods to acid and progressive trance. Closer 'Klenkl', meanwhile, continues the hypno heady grooves and arrangements. Amboule pays homage to the golden age of ravey techno and trance, reinterpreting these genres for modern audiences. Raum... musik's 117th release solidifies its reputation as a quality label for introducing fresh talent and pushing boundaries in electronic music.

Review: Renowned Greek DJ and experienced producer Argy makes his anticipated return with his newest album, New World, released on the Afterlife label. With 14 tracks in total and most of them clocking in at between three and a half and five minutes, Argy doesn't beat around the bush, giving people what they came for. These tracks ebb and flow quicker than normal techno tracks, giving them a much more straightforward and popular feel. Argy's singing over the tracks fit very well, like in 'All Day Long'. The rhythms are strong while the beats are pulsing and dynamic. Argy is known to be a fantastic techno producer. Singles off the album include 'Higher Power', 'Aria', and 'Pantheon'.

Flowers EP
Flowers EP (12" reeditado)

Andrew Ashong & Theo Parrish - "Flowers" (8:55)
Andrew Ashong - "Take It Slow" (7:11)
Andrew Ashong - "The Way She Moves" (short version) (5:21)
Review: At first glance, the pairing of Forest Hill resident Andrew Ashong and Sound Signature boss Theo Parrish would seem strange. But the duo have worked together previously with the Ghanaian born vocalist (and supposed owner of a vinyl collection that would make most record shops look like a car boot sale) lending his soulful tones to Parrish's excellent nine minute plus translation of the Hot Chip and Spiritualised affiliated About Group. Whereas that collaboration was more about Ashong's voice being just one element of a production that was undoubtedly Parrish, the three tracks present on the Flowers EP look to showcase what a talent the Londoner is. Those trademark dust filled stacatto rhythms are present in the opening title track, but they never swamp Ashong's killer vocal delivery, while "Take It Slow" is bonafide D funk of the highest order. After the brutal, divisive nature of Theo's kung fu experimentalism on the Any Other Styles EP, these three tracks show him in a wholly new light and hopefully Parrish and Ashong will be making much more music together.

Review: Rush Hour has been a buy-on-sight label for decades, no matter what genre it is dealing in. Lars Bartkuhn keeps that fine reputation alive with his new album Nomad which explores the intersection of jazz, synth, house, ambient and more. 'Every Morning I Meditate' is a soothing opener then 'Transcend' is packed with nodding chords, jazz melodies and vocal coos that are perfectly loungey. 'African Skies' is a quiet piano sound, 'First Kalimba' explores the sound of the unique African instrument over shimmering pads and 'Moving Mountains' is a piece to suspend you in the farthest edges of our cosmos. A superbly intimate and artistic album overall.

Courtside Drama (5:35)
Rise (7:49)
The Game (4:59)
Review: Belfast lads done very good Bicep return with the Stash EP, their first full release of the year and it represents a triumphant return to Will Saul's Aus label with the. It's fair to say Andrew Ferguson and Matthew McBriar ruled 2012, helping to pioneer a trend in backwards glancing house music across their various releases for Aus, Love Fever and their own Feel My Bicep label. So it makes for pleasant listening that Stash sees the duo expanding on their sound with four tracks more reflective of their personal tastes. The title track is full on peak time bliss which dovetails nicely with the glistening deepness of "Courtside Drama" and the chunk "Rise" which demonstrates a new found passion for infectious lead synth hooks. "The Game" offers a downtempo curveball, working in samples from HBO drama The Wire amidst a generally melancholic tone that owes more to Aphex Twin than Kerri Chandler.

Review: German DJ Stephan Bodzin presents his first ever official remix album, with no end of fellow deep tech artists as Ben Bohmer, Roman Flugel, Mind Against, Wehbba, ANNA and Dubfire in tow for a massive reworking of his album 'Boavista'. It's always impressive when artists show off the fact that they can enlist an army of remixers of one's own work; Bodzin ensures his name is shouted loud and proud, from every corner of the earth, as his fellow established names cement his veneration through reworks of the high-end, carefully constructed 'Boavista' and more. Such towering and uplifting music, of course, is a gift for which we should be eternally thankful.

Review: Boo Williams started Boo Moonman Records at the tail end of 2019 and it presents the label's fifth release here in the form of a much needed reissue. Features 'The Undertaker' with its frantic percolator jack which is a zeitgeist of The Windy City's hard house sound of the mid-90s made popular by Cajmere's Relief Records - the very label where the EP originally appeared. 'The Last Call' is exactly the kind of boompty deep house you've come to know and love from the legendary producer, as is the late night bangin' basement jam 'Feel The Drive' capturing the distinct zeitgeist of Chicago during its most seminal moment.

Review: Unstoppable Chicago house tour de force Boo Williams has one of the most recognisable sounds in the scene but always manages to say new things with it. This time out he takes care of a 50th release on the Boo Moonman label. It kicks off with some tech-leaning grooves that swing back and forth underneath cosmic pad work. 'Limited Time' is a more percussive and laid-back vibe, with deep house chords and jazzy feelings. 'Emergency Teck' then comes in two further versions - one acid one, and one beat tool for layering up your sets. It makes for another timeless outing from this vital house voice.

Edition 4 features two smooth cuts on the first side; such as the low slung and jazz inflected late night vibe of 'Disco Fever' followed by the sultry mood music of 'Calling Love' featuring one super sexy sax that's underpinned by sweltering bongo drums. Over on the flip, Williams saves the best for last with the subtle and hypnotic tool 'Let No Man'.

Review: Limited edition reissue of the rare, sought after Boo Williams classic 'Fruits Of The Spirit' originally released in 1999, with four lush tracks completing the generous offering. The title track is blessed with a chugging rhythm, tinkling sonics and ascending, rushing synths, while elsewhere on the EP there's plenty of soothing, properly deep house all executed with a keen ear for melody and a knack for tempting feet floorwards. Don't miss this second chance to get your hands on a classic.

Mayday/Captured Restless Soul Mixes (GU mix Meshup) (7:22)
Review: Those two little letters GU are always enough to get us excited. They are of course an alias of Glenn Underground, the masterful Chicago house producer, musician and DJ who still has a much lower profile than his talents deserve. Here he adds a Mix Mashup to Bobpstar's 'Mayday/Captured Restless Soul Mixes' and the result is a bubbly, mellifluous deep house cut with warm and liquid synths, chopped-up vocal fragments and a gooey sense of romance. It is another crucial offering from the Windy City mainstay, even if it is a one-sided 12".

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Defected's vinyl series continues to commit the label's biggest digital releases to wax for the first time, and this special twentieth edition has been created in partnership with Shelter, the housing and homeless charity. Together, in July 2023, the label and charity launched 'From House To Home', which pioneers an ingenious idea; taking 'house music' to its utmost logical conclusion, deploying reworks classic house tracks as fundraisers for helping secure actual housing for the homeless. On this latest edition to the series, Germany's Jonathan Kaspar remixes Breach's revered deep house anthem, 'Jack'. Then comes the bubbling Mason Collective and Bipolar Sunshine collab 'People In Love', shortly followed by the recent pop hit by Arielle Free, 'Feels So Good', before a round-off in the form of a generational collaboration between production pioneers Bob Sinclar, A-Trak, and Mele with 'Deep Inside Of Me'.

Review: Lefferis Kalabakas may have been making and releasing music as Lee Burton for the best part of 14 years - largely for labels like Raum Musik and Up The Stuss - but this tidy EP still marks his first outing on German giant Rawax. He starts in confident mood via energy-packed peak-time workout 'Party Crusher', where acid licks, Yorkshire bleeps and piano riffs rise above an early LFO-inspired groove, before opting for a mid-90s-MK-goes-psychedelic flex on 'Nismo'. Over on the flip, 'VOT' is a rolling, acid-flecked, organ-sporting slab of rushing dancefloor positivity, while 'Zero G' is a raging, TB-303 heavy acid-breaks roller.

Review: After the first volume went down so well it's no wonder we now get treated to The Sound Of Garden Vol 2 Part 2. This various artist affair comes right from the cutting edge of minimal house and tech with Lee Burton opening up in bold, strident, bouncy fashion as he allows zippy acid to flash about his full-bodied beats. Maggio's 'Rolling Phunk' is just that - perfect effective rhythms with machine soul. Jamhar and Franko Lopez then combine for 'Lost Act' which brings more undulating drums and techno-leaning synths before closer Matteo Point shuts down with the future-facing prog pomp of 'Great Weekend.'

Review: Argentina's Hernan Cattaneo has long championed deeper, mellower sounds, and here Balance Music invite him to give full rein to those laidback tendencies. CD1 starts out in deep house/minimal pastures, then moves closer to the prog/melodic end of the spectrum as it goes on, and that's where we stay for most of CD2 (bar the inevitable downtempo close) - though, to be clear, we're talking about the very deepest of prog here, with not a cheesy Euro synth riff in sight! It's an album that's really best enjoyed in full, but if you want to know where to dip your toes, try Mike Griego's 'Headspace' or Kevin Di Serna & Graziano Raffa's 'System Era'.

He has done it all from ambient and trip-hop to breakbeats as far back as the 90s. This EP distils all those many years of sound into some sophisticated cuts that go deep. 'Hush' is a quiet downtempo opener, 'Cat Daddy' (Meow mix) brings some funky beats and 'Subway (M Train mix)' has more unsettling texture and languid percussive drums that lock you into a groove then 'Droptone' closes out with nods to a raw 90s rave sound and psyched out synths.

Review: Slinky nighttime acid tech from Cirkel Square, laying down his debut 'Outside The Dome' EP for Subwax. Despite the title's focus on the hemispherical exterior, this is actually a two-track study on both the inside and outside of said dome. We begin life inside the hydroponic homestead, with surreptitious trance-acid and dimly lit pads suggestive of a secret plot to escape. The B-side's 'Outer Limits' responds with a more excitable jaunt, though by no means has our escape plan been scuppered by the authorities, with the mood continually driving, techy and methodical. Two remixes from Len Lewis and Magnus Asberg only add to the edge-of-your-seat excitement.

Cat: SORA 00. Rel: 09 Dec 22
Subtle Light (take 2) (8:41)
Peekaboo We See You (bonus beats) (12:08)
Review: Those with good memories may remember Sacred Rhythm's late '90s and early 2000s sister label Natural Resource, which existed primarily as an outlet for founder Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell's "deeper, electronic soundscape" style productions. SORA, which debuts with this coloured vinyl 10", is its' replacement. Clausell is naturally in top form across both productions. A-side 'Subtle Light' is undeniably"gorgeous, with Clausell wrapping twinkling, sunset-friendly piano solos, shimmering synth strings and spacey electronics around a tactile, undulating dream house bassline and hybrid drum machine/hand percussion beats. On B-aside 'Peakaboo We See You', the long-serving NYC producer opts for a darker, more heads-down 'deep-tech' sound, adding raw, rough and menacing stabs, tribal style percussion hits and bold aural textures to a weighty, peak-time-ready house beat.

Review: 'Praise' was first released under the Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell banner in 2013 as a full package of CD-bound gospel-house transcenders. Part of the Gospel Music According To Joe Claussell series, the moment marked the apogee of the DJ and producer's stint in the world of edits and overdubs, after which he'd move into spiritual house musics of a less sample-based making. Now, however, we return to 'Praise' with two special edits cut to a limited edition 12" sampler, harkening a return to the form and a bigger box set in the series to come, a decade on; first we're met with Myrna Summers and her choir on 'So Much To Live For', which lays bare the holy-ghostly hooks and kick-clapped stamps; then there's a similar edit of Bishop Jeff Banks' 'Jerusalem', which whips out the Hammonds and sopranos for the B.

With six tracks on show, there's plenty to set the senses tingling, from the jazzy, dreamy and soulful downtempo beats of impeccable opener 'I Need To Know' and the joyous, piano-sporting sunshine house excellence of 'Do You Think About Me', to the rising, subtly jazz-flecked deep house perfection of 'Freddie's Groove' (a kind of Crackazat update of Pepe Bradock's 'Deep Burnt', with added horns) and the broken jazz-house-soul of Potash Twins collaboration 'Phantom'. Jazz-funk flavoured broken beat gem 'Endless Life' and the Guru's Jazzamatazz-esque 'When We Last Met' complete a fantastic EP.

Nu Bass (6:09)
Spooky Electrik (5:59)
Money, Honey, Monday? (6:09)
Triperie (5:32)
Review: The great Frenchman D'Julz has always served up bass-heavy house and tech (hence the name of his label, Bass Culture) and the quality of his sounds always remains high. That is true again here with a new 12" on his own label that opens up with 'Nu Bass'. It has garage percussion and rolling low ends that soon get you going. 'Spooky Electric' is another stylish sound with a curious little melodic refrain floating up above the atmospheric low ends and prying bass. 'Money, Honey, Monday' then brings more garage infelicitous with choppy snares and grinding bass while 'Triperie' shuts down with a darker and more menacing cosmic edge.

Review: Da Lukas's Satisfy Your Soul EP is a four-track full of disco goodness that opens with the title track, a driving, percussive workout with a powerful vocal performance. 'Let Your Body Be Free' continues the party music with a dynamic horn section and disco breakdown. 'Supergood' is a hi-energy dancefloor anthem, with a pumping beat an infectious filtered house sound. The EP closes with 'Music Turns Me On', a slow-burning track that enjoys riding the groove with a generous amount of funk. Da Lukas' tracks are nicely crafted, with a deep understanding of the disco genre. Satisfy Your Soul is a must-have for fans of disco and nu disco alike.

Review: Now in its second reissues round, 'The B Sides' are a cornucopia of vintage techno gems from the Belgian techno maestro Frank De Wulf. Each track on this glistening record could be classed as an oldie but goldie, having graced the iconic Belgian label Music Man Records in 1990 - which evidently is still going strong. Recall delectably crude space jams and hardware ham-fists.

Review: Attention all DJs seeking that crowd-rocking curveball to get the people freaking out. This cheeky one-sided 12" from Digwah is guaranteed to fly out thanks to its canny sampling of Destiny's Child's "Jumpin' Jumpin'". These iconic hooks are strapped to a rolling minimal tech groove with pattering machine drum beats and a mean bass synth that gets right under your skin. Fun on top, serious underneath, this is one of those unmissable club 12"s that will always do the damage when you want to liven up the party.

Feel Da Rain (D' Pac Rhodes dub) (7:45)
Review: First released way back in 1994 on Kevin Saunderson's KMS label, Dionne Warren's Brian Hall-produced deep house gem 'Feel Da Rain' gets a new lease of life thanks to Windsor, Ontario imprint Collective Rhythm Network (CRN). While the original 12" also featured rubs from Alton Miller and Stacey Pullen, it's D'Pac Patel's dub . a warm, rolling, US garage influenced deep house workout rich in tactile organ stabs, superb grooves and short samples of Warren's vocals - that has become the most sought-after version. On this 12", we get Patel's full-length dub (it was edited down on the original 12") and a previously unreleased 'Rhodes Dub' that adds extra electric piano action for added warmth and flavour.

Review: This cultured collaboration between Dirty Channels and Eternal Love extends beyond the Italian house scene with their debut single 'Take Me Up.' Featuring the talented vocalist Mariseya, the track's infectious energy is driven by a captivating piano groove that is very much reminiscent of the artists' deep Italian house roots but with all new style added in. Also featuring is a Diano Ross referencing gem in the form of 'I'm Coming Out' which is a pure house bumper for unadulterated good times. Gerd Janson adds his own touch to his remix and an instrumental is also included.

Review: The Samosa label returns with Part 2 of the Re-Funk Head project, once again showcasing top-tier disco grooves. Opening up is Dirty Elements & Drunk Drivers feat. E.M.E with 'Disco Ball,' a sassy, high-energy track featuring a standout brass ensemble, while track 2, 'Ain't No Doubt About It' by Moplen, entices with disco beats, bongo rhythms, and a masterful bassline. Jazzyfunk's 'Sexy Thing' continues the disco theme with soaring strings and a punchy bassline, perfect for any dance floor moment. Closing the EP is DeGama's 'Feel The Groove,' a powerful tune blending house vibes with blues-inspired guitar and sultry saxophone. Re-Funk Head Part 2 is essential for serious funk fans.

Bayrou (Lindstrom remix) (6:39)
Cope (7:02)
Review: Dombrance is back with a typically vibrant new EP on Discolypso that features two fresh tracks and remixes from luminaries Francois K and Lindstrom. Once referred to as a 'French Jarvis Cocker with a bushy moustache and flares,' Dombrance is a musical maverick who dropped his debut album last year and performed globally from Glastonbury to Downtown LA. On this one, 'Bayrou' and 'Cope' draw inspiration from politicians, delivering timeless electronic disco vibes with sugary chords and pulsating synths, then Francois K transforms 'Cope' into a psychedelic journey, while Lindstrom's remix of 'Bayrou' conjures images of a David Lynch pool party. It's peak disco fun.

Review: The Energy Exchange family is one of love and shared creation and so this fourth 12" outing sees them invite the in-house production team and extended crew from the 30/70 collective all remix and rework each other. The sounds are drenched in soul and passion and use house music as a framework to explore happy vibes for the dance floor. A Maytra Roller edit kicks off with some lush broken beats and empowering vocals, then Close Counters remixes 'Brighter Star' with piano-laced energy. Elsewhere is the sublime seven-minute opus from Zeitgeist/Goodmood Sex & Candy who flip 'Acceptance' into a gloriously passionate house classic.
