Drums #1 (12")
Cat: FIT 004. Rel: 22 Nov 11
  1. Part 1
  2. Part 2
Review: ** FIT REPRESS ** Naturally for a producer who prefers to remain anonymous and call themselves A Drummer From Detroit and name their debut EP Drums, both tracks here veer into dextrously percussive house territory. Amidst the dizzying, jazz influenced rattle of Shake Shakir style rhythms that characterise the A Side workout our erstwhile protagonist weaves in desperate vocal strains and overtly dramatic piano and horn stabs which only serve to increase the panic inducing pace. The flipside treatment is slightly slower in its execution, yet increases the jazz funk melodic elements which make it the less a hectic and more involving production.

  1. Moonspa (7:49)
  2. Haven (6:05)
  3. Simplex City (7:14)
  4. Noga (7:40)
Review: 2019 was a breakthrough year for Adam Longman Parker AKA Afriqua, thanks in no small part to the release of his brilliant debut album on R&S (the mixed-up and imaginative "Colored"). It's a curious quirk then that his latest single features tracks not recorded last year, but rather way back in 2017. It shows a producer trying to take tech-house in interesting new directions whilst still maintaining the club-focused rhythms and late night hypnotism frequently associated with the style. We're particularly enjoying the melancholic, funk-fuelled deep-tech eccentricity of "Haven" and the colourful melodies of the decidedly druggy "Noga", though lolloping and layered opener "Moonspa" may well be the best of an off-kilter bunch.

  1. All U Gotta Do Is Listen (7:09)
  2. Night Time Is The Right Time (6:25)
Review: The crew behind the Hizou label is rightly chuffed that they've managed to secure this two-tracker from Andres, a Detroit producer whose releases - whether aimed at deep house dancefloors or hip-hop heads - are rarely less than superb. The two tracks the label has selected are suitably strong, too. Check first A-side "All U Gotta Do Is Listen", a warm and hazy chunk of break-driven mid-tempo deep house rich in jazzy samples, swirling crowd noises, chunky bass and dewy-eyed instrumentation. Andres' vintage influences are explored further on flipside "Night Time Is The Right Time", a P-funk influenced deep house bumper whose swinging drums and elongated organ chords casually tip a wink to classic New Jersey garage.

Review: Featuring the collective talents of Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Sondorom and Shonky, it's little surprise the Apollonia project has swiftly become a force to be reckoned with in house music over the past two years. Less a production unit, more an excellent DJ tag team and label collective, Apollonia output to date has been the sole Trinidad 12" issued through their eponymous label back in 2013. A debut album then is something of an ambitious move, yet Tour a Tour demonstrates the Parisian trio are more than up to the task. Said to be inspired by their unified approach to Djing, the album consists of 13 tracks that ramp up the intensity deftly in a manner to reflect a DJ mix. French legends Phillip Zdar and Alexkid lend their considered touch to proceedings throughout.

  3. Club Orange (6:29)
Review: To kick-start 2018, Spleandor and Squalour owners and sometime Dirt Crew Recordings artists Brame & Hamo serve up and trio of high-grade deep house treats. They begin with "Roy Keane", a chunky hybrid of tech-tinged deep house heaviness and celebratory orchestral disco that hits home harder than one of the Irish midfielder's two-footed tackles. The track that follows, "Space Dub", brilliantly joins the dots between throbbing Detroit techno futurism and intergalactic deep house bliss, while closer "Club Orange" is a shimmering slice of peak-time deep house complete with sampled party atmos, swirling strings and throbbing analogue bass.

Review: Having found a renewed vigour with his Breach alias, Ben Westbeech has been ripping it up with his run of singles over the past few years, and now !K7 have snapped him up for the latest installment in the still-trucking DJ Kicks series that shows just how deeply rooted in house music the long-serving producer is. With the double-pack vinyl edition packing in full versions of many of the standout tracks from the mix, you can get treated to the anthemic vocal tones of Pedestrian, the heartfelt garage tones of Cassio Kohl, the fist shaking grooves of Detroit Swindle and in something of a curveball move, the ethereal electro of Dopplereffekt. For the most part it's direct and soulful house music as you would expect from a man of Ben's pedigree.

Review: According to a friend from New York, Nick Chacona is into hugging, the smurfs, biting people and feeling really guilty about it the next day, chewing his moustache, shaving his head, cleaning up cat piss, noodling disco, crying and sharing. Well, he forgot to mention that he's also been recording some of the finest house music to come out of NYC since 2001. 'A Cambria Heights Affair' sees him delve deep into the guitar dub house that sits so sweetly on Bear Funk Gold, the regenerated id for a regenerated Bear Funk - sure to please the listener.

  4. Beam Me Up (feat Charlene Soraia & Scuba - Hercules & Love Affair remix)
Review: Will Saul's labour of love finally makes its first appearance with this single for !K7, which sees the producer delving into a synth-pop blend that equally champions his house roots, with a little help from Scuba and Charlene Soraia's vocals. As well as the sultry tones of the original, there's plenty of premier league remix action to be enjoyed on this EP, with George Fitzgerald dropping a lean tech house pumper. Scuba meanwhile brings his own "Dub Of Doom" version that builds on a harmonious swell of melancholy, ultimately leading to a glorious peak time drop. Hercules & Love Affair bring the spiciest mix with their acidic version letting a wonderfully wielded 303 lead the way alongside some deadly organ business.

Cat: CW 003. Rel: 17 Feb 20
  1. You! (5:13)
  2. If I Could (5:50)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Joe Corti's latest outing on China White follows the premise laid out by his previous turns - unbridled feel-good house music with more than a little disco sauce poured into the mix. So it goes on this new drop, a two-track bomb guaranteed to set the party ablaze. "You!" is the consummate A side burner - all fever-pitch diva vocals, searing strings and a powerful peak time rhythmic thrust. Providing the balance on the flip, "If I Could" takes things deeper with some smouldering loops kept sizzling under an array of processing without diluting the heavy funk of the groove. Seriously tasteful disco edit tackle right here.

Cat: ATM 002. Rel: 06 Dec 16
  1. Relax Your Body (6:37)
  2. Relax Your Body (Ricardo Villalobos remix) (19:33)
Review: The first release of AUTUM's secondhand series: vinyl reissues of iconic tracks from the past, brought back to life through contemporary remixes by the most influential artists of the current electronic music scene. This 1989 classic by DFX aka Italian legends Felix Imevbore and Claudio Donato features the vocals by Dr. FeelX. It has all the hallmarks of such a zeitgeist: hissing metallic reverberations of the Linn drum, squelchy and euphoric synth leads and sleazy adrenaline throughout. On this flip it is remixed by none other than Ricardo Villalobos; injecting the track with his trademark, reductionist mini-funk aesthetics and allowing you fully trip out over its nearly 20 minute duration.

  1. A&F (6:29)
  2. Important Message (7:33)
Review: Pagan Rites group member DJ City (real name Johan Norling) recently returned to action with his first new material for almost two years. Here he continues his welcome revival with a decidedly loved-up two-tracker on Public Possession (his second 12" for the German imprint). A-side "A&F" is particularly delicious, sitting somewhere between the saucer-eyed, piano-sporting Balearic house of sometime label-mate Telephones, the colourful lusciousness of turn-of-the-90s Italian dream house and a German take on mid-80s Italo-disco. He continues on a similar - albeit notably deeper - vein on flipside title track "Important Message", adding his own deadpan vocals ("I hope you don't die taking drugs tonight") to a warm and tactile backing track that fixes bubbly nu-disco synths and proto-house flourishes to vintage Larry Heard beats and chords.

Review: Eccentric Swedish sitcom enthusiast turned producer DJ Seinfeld is hot property right now, so it's hardly a surprise to see him mixing the latest instalment in the DJ Kicks series. It's rather good, all told, offering a good run through of his influences and inspirations whilst also packing plenty of dancefloor punch. Taken in isolation, the Swede's on-point selections (think breakbeat-driven lo-fi house, dreamy deep house, skewed techno and bubbly post-IDM jams) are often deep, melodious, atmospheric and left-of-centre; brought together, the result is a wonderfully fluid and entertaining mix. Highlights include the downtempo bliss of the producer's own "I See U", the bass-heavy breaks/deep house fusion of Rudolf C's "Deep Sea Survivor", the rushing dancefloor mania of FaltyDL and the loved-up goodness of Project Pablo.

  1. Saboten (5:26)
  2. West World (6:45)
  3. Cycle Blue (7:35)
Review: A fair few DJs will go weak at the knees when they spot this collaboration between Workshop overlord Kassem Mosse and Fit Sound supremo Fit Siegel. The three tracks showcased on the EP were actually recorded in Detroit back in 2016, though Siegel only got round to completing finished versions last year. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the snappy, slightly wayward machine drums, slowly shifting TB-303 acid lines and subtle Detroit electronics of "Saboten", to the dubby late night hypnotism of closing cut "Cycle Blue", where woozy intergalactic chords, blissful piano motifs and vaguely threatening electronic pulses cluster around fizzing drums and a suitably bubbly bassline.

Review: Since debuting in 2017, Gene On Earth (real name Gene Arthur) has offered up a string of solid singles and a must-check debut album, "Local Fuzz". "The Juggler" is his first missive of 2020 and is every bit as good as its predecessors. Opener "Beluga Entree" is particularly potent, with blissful synthesizer lines and squelchy acid stabs jumping around atop bustling beats, funky bass and flash-fried guitar samples, while "Junior Goblet" is a skipping, scratch-happy fusion of cheery deep house motifs and U.S garage style grooves. Over on side B we're treated to two mixes of "Yo Banana Boy": a quietly funky bleep-house take (the spacey but bass-heavy "GT Mix") and the dreamy deep house/bleep/breaks fusion that is the "WMC Mix".

  1. Peace Bird (8:37)
  2. Smiling Into Eternity (6:45)
  3. Rymd01 (6:20)
Review: The Swedish deep house duo of Alexander Berg (Dorisburg) and Nils Krogh (Arkajo) aka Genius Of Time are back outside of their established Aniara imprint for the second time on Running Back since 2014's Juno Jam EP. It has been a long time between drinks, with Krogh pursuing some great solo stuff as Arkajo and Berg performing in Sebastian Mullaert's Circle Of Live. This terrific new EP features the bittersweet "Peace Bird" that follows through with warm Rhodes keys, woody percussion and an all-round lo-slung swagger. The spacey and understated "Smiling Into Eternity" follows through on the B side, followed by the reduced and emotive disco of "Rymd01". Great stuff once again by the Gothenburg-based duo.

Lights Out (12")

  1. Lights Out (7:02)
  2. High Flames (6:42)
  3. Flash Burn (6:26)
Review: Verona-based Patrick "Twice" Gibin is making a habit of collaborating with nu-jazz and broken beat veterans. Having previously joined forces with one-time Sonar Kollektiv regular Clara Hill, this E.P sees him acquire the services of killer keys-man Kaidi Tatham of Bugz In The Attic fame. The latter's smart, jazz-funk influenced riffs are all over the sweet, gently soulful and wonderfully positive deep house A-side "Lights Out", but can also be heard on the woozy, broken beat-goes-boogie flex of "High Flames". "Flash Burn", another musically rich, organic house groover - this time complete with what sound like eyes-closed guitar solos - completes an excellent package.

GRANT 005 (12")

  1. Nature Yourself (7:01)
  2. Beat One Project (6:52)
  3. Got To Know (7:22)
  4. Converge (7:03)
Review: Over the course of his (admittedly short) career, Grant has yet to put a foot wrong. The American lo-fi house wizard is once again in fine form on this fifth volume in his self-released 12" series. EP opener "Nature Yourself", a wonderfully spacey and glassy-eyed chunk of early morning San Francisco style deep house, is particularly delightful, though the sensual and seductive flipside opener, the Dream 2 Science style vintage vocal deep house of "Got To Know", is also superb. Elsewhere, "Converge" sounds like it was inspired, at least in part, by the meandering, ever-building synth solos and loved-up rush of Maurice Fulton's best productions, while "Beat One Project" is a more percussive, bass-heavy peak-time workout.

  1. Pluto's Retreat (Optimus remix)
  2. Piston Fiston (Fabrizio Mammerella remix)
Review: Brennan Green/Stevie Kotey & Emperor Machine all on one EP. What a Treat!! Green is considered family at Bear Towers any one that has had the pleasure of meeting him will now what a top top guy he is, so it's great to get the "Pluto's Retreat". We chose well with this remix as Optimus (none other than Pete Herbert and Mat Anthony) deliver a scorching club version that has been played on many a Saturday night by The Idjuts and label big-Bear Mr Kotey - it's pure e-music. On the flipside Mr Kotey presents "Piston Fiston". Though it's a serious piece of music "Piston Fiston" is a term used by our good friend Young'un for describing using your fist instead of your cock when giving it to a lady "That fist should be moving faster than a piston". Just like this crazy inspired work that combines none other than Andrew Meecham (The Emperor Machine) on session musician duty. Then the Italian glamour boy Fabrizio Mammarella gets roped it to remix the parts created and deliver the first instalment of the "Piston Fiston" project which sounds like 4 records in one.

Review: In only a mere five years, producer, engineer and DJ Per Hammar has racked up an impressive discography, and now presents his long awaited debut full length album 'Pathfinder' on his own Dirty Hands imprint. This is a fine collection of moods and grooves for any occasion, and you can bet that his dubby and glacial aesthetic is evident throughout. From the chilling and bass-driven opener "Mother" and the Basic Channel-ish "F Dubb 1000", to ethereal and hypnotic rollers in the vein of fellow Scandinavians like S.A.M. on "If You Have A Mind It Will Wonder", and wonderfully representing the new breed of tech house on bangers like "Galatea" and "Manchester Lone Star". There's a lot to get through on here, but it's top notch all the way. Tip!

Delivering his signature bass licks and providing us with a vocal track on top of it all in "Last Forever".
