Let Yourself Go

  4. Let Yourself Go (Capitol dub) (7:20)
  5. Let Yourself Go (Georgetown mix) (5:18)
Review: Doug Smith and Richard Payton aka 95 North are a house music production duo from Washington DC. They are well known for their 90's discography which was full of hits on the likes of Strictly Rhythm, King Street Sounds and Slip 'N Slide, including collaborations with Crystal Waters and Sabrynaah Pope. "Let Yourself Go' was originally released in 1995 and probably one of the best moments of their activity in the house music scene. The jacking and swing fuelled vocal house of "Let Yourself Go" (Penn Ave mix) is a real zeitgeist of stateside house music of the mid noughties. Equally memorable were the dark and tribal drums of "Capitol mix" (reminiscent of classic Cevin Fisher) or the deeper and sexier garage vibe of the "Georgetown mix".

Review: For the 42nd stop on the decades-long journey through worldwide DJ culture, Global Underground has pitched up in Berlin and handed over the reins to Patrice Baumel, a Dutch DJ/producer with an impressive track record. The resultant two-disc mix-up is staggeringly good, with Baumel choosing to represent a wide variety of techno and tech-house sounds with occasional diversions into more melodious or off-kilter fare. Wisely, the Dutchman has also chosen to offer up tracks that span the decades, contrasting classic material from the likes of Swayzak, Matthew Dear and Chateau Flight (whose brilliant "Cosmic Race" stands out) with newer cuts from such artists as Shlomo, Steve Moore, Adam Port, Ripperton and the ageless Phil Kieran.

Review: Since signing to Studio Barnhus last year, Bella Boo (real name Gabriella Borbely) has delivered a handful of quirky EPs, but nothing quite as impressive as this brilliant debut album. It's rooted in her own skewed take on house - a constant theme amongst Studio Barnhus artists - but draws on a myriad of influences and impressively dashes off in different directions. There's the lightly Afro-tinged vocal deep house pulse of "Can't Leave You Like This", the bustling, loose-limbed "She's Back!", the downtempo nu-jazz of "Tuesday", the squelchy 21st century hip-house of "Hotel Europa" and the ambient bliss of "Stars"- and that's before we get to the jazzy, acid-fired wonder that is Axel Boman hook-up "Do The Right Thing".

  1. Never Come Back (Floating Points remix) (9:00)
  2. Sister (Floating Points remix) (7:07)
Review: Having already seen his synth-pop-meets-piano-house gem "Never Come Back" successfully remixed by Four Tet and Morgan Geist, Dan "Caribou" Snaith has now handed over the parts to Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points. While those versions retained the core elements of Snaith's warm and ear-pleasing original mix, Shepherd has chosen to re-imagine it as the kind of positive, spacey, musically detailed and rushing late night deep house jam with which he originally made his name a decade ago. It has serious sub-bass weight, too, and is one of his most impressive club-focused outings for some time. It's worth buying the 12" for that mix alone, but his wonderfully deep, sub-heavy, garage-influenced rework of another "Suddenly" album track, "Sister", is also superb. In other words, you need this in your life.

  5. When You Love Someone (The Reconstruction mix) (8:18)
Review: The latest on-point reissue from Italy's Groovin' label takes us back to 1993, and the Peter Daou/Danny Tenaglia-produced debut single from vocalist Daphne Rubin-Vega. It's a far breezier, groovier and sweeter record than many of Tenaglia's later productions (which tended towards the muscular), with Rubin-Vega's quietly soulful vocal seemingly drifting across a backing track rich in warm chords and baggy, breakbeat-driven house grooves. All of the various mixes hit the spot, with the trippy, dub-style Reconstruction Mix, vibraphone-laden Groove Instrumental and low-slung Never Do Dub standing out. The Acapella Reprise, which features rich chords and vocal snippets, is also rather good.

Review: De Gama has previously proven to be a master of dancefloor-focused musical fusion, delivering a string of singles that gleefully mine a variety of rhythmic styles from around the World for inspiration (most notably the polyrhythms of Africa and South America). He's at it again here, with flipside "Mantekilla" brilliantly joining the dots between dusty, horn-heavy Afrobeat and rolling deep house. While impressive, it's A-side "Yebo" - a heavy chunk of house-tempo dancefloor dub with clear Afrobeat influences - that's really floating our boat. Either way, it's another predictably strong 12" from the experienced producer.

Review: The legendary DJ Pierre, godfather of acid house and all round Chicago legend returns with "Acid Love" the lead single from his debut album 'Wild Pitch: The Story' for Berlin's Get Physical. Let's not ignore the obvious here: yes it is a cover version of Donna Summer's disco anthem "I Feel Love" and it's an absolutely rip-roaring rendition too, we must say! Featuring the same (if not similar) 'Moroderesque' arpeggios, layered with similar 303 styled ones (naturally), some epic vocals (but certainly not Ms. Summers' rather one Chic Loren) and even some rock guitar solos! The LP by the Phuture and Wild Pitch affiliated artist will feature new edits and classics alike such as "Love And Happiness" and a collaboration with fellow innovator Marshall Jefferson.

Review: The inimitable Fred Peterkin presents yet more incredible adventures on his newly inaugurated Perpetual Sound imprint. Following up the incredible EP from Black Jazz Consortium back in December, this sophomore effort sees the head honcho co-present some fine tracks with veteran Swiss producer Sam Geiser aka Deetron via the Lush Culture EP. It's all about Captain P on the A side, featuring the deep and moody tribal entrancement of "Liquidity" followed by the soulful title track - which features his trademark use of emotive synth sounds and immaculately programmed rhythms. On the flip, Deetron goes well deep and smooth on his offering "Sweet Science" which sees him deliver hi-tech soul in his usual idiosyncratic style before P returns to conclude the release with the retro-futurist, ambient "119 Black Key Experiment".

Review: As Music and Power hits release number 15, the label serves up a big one from Ron Trent, who presents his Gemini Jazz project across two Longford, spiritually hypnotic tracks. Of course, the sis always how the main man rolls, but even for him these are strong: "Earth Dance" has a lush arrangement that jingles and jangles with streaming piano chords and trilling keys, languid baselines and lithe percussion. "Absolution" is a little deeper, with more cosmic jazz rays radiating from the core. This is soul music that is utterly stirring and intoxicating.

Cat: THANKYOU 007. Rel: 02 Oct 20
  1. Keep The Faith (5:43)
  2. Beans (7:54)
  3. Floored (6:30)
Review: Way back in 1993, Back to Basics founders Dave Beer and Alistair Cooke headed into the studio with engineer Richard Brown and made their first and, poignantly, only record (Cooke tragically passed away a few months later). Credited to The God Squad, Keep the Faith doffed a cap to Beer's goth past by heavily sampling the Sisters of Mercy. Here re-mastered and reissued for the first time since, it's interesting to note how contemporary it sounds. Opener 'Keep the Faith' is a trippy late night chugger that combines razor-sharp guitar riffs with pulsating, arpeggio-style bass and house drums, while 'Beans' is a saucer-eyed house throb-job of the sort that Andrew Weatherall loved to play. Also impressive is 'Floored', a sparse mid-tempo affair rich in layered percussive and dubbed-out bass.

Review: Strasbourg based Ordinaire run successful and cultured parties and are now branching our with their own label. It is a split EP between Kicks and El Kazed, who are party regulars and behind the scenes insiders so make perfect choices to launch the imprint. The vibes are super sweet here, with timeless groovers 'In The Shell' and 'Keep On' sinking you into a nice deep mood. El Kazed then steps up with the cuddly and romantic deep house soul of 'Soul Motion', featuring a very nice vocal sample. 'Natural Swing' ends in a more punchy party mode. It makes a great end to a great first EP.

  1. Each Dawn Every Dawn (6:39)
  2. Each Dawn Every Dawn (The Day After) (6:30)
Review: Obscure gothic/industrial proto-house from Chicago unearthed here by Mixed Signals Music: a new import label from Toronto's Seance Centre & Smiling C. LITIA=LOE (Life In The Insane Asylum = Life On Earth) was comprised of Leon Williams and Daryl Wilson, with brothers Grant and Simeon Rogers who were influenced by Nitzer Ebb, Bauhaus and Chris & Cosey and others of the same movement at the time. The track in focus on this single is moody and sensual "Each Dawn Every Dawn", a delightful serving of disco-noir that reminds us of Windy City icon Jamie Principle's output around the same time. A second version on the B side (The Day After) leaves more room in the mix for Williams' rather captivating head voice.

Review: There is a lot of information to be processed in listening to the latest EP from Mauser, appearing on Plan B recordings with no interest in sticking to one style. As such, the EP kicks off with the sublime, electro-inflected soul of "TX77" before completely switching stance to the frantic jungle tear-out of "Get Mad", which still manages to channel a healthy amount of jazzy tones into the mix at the same time. On the flip side there's a more pronounced acid flavour at work on "XR665", without dropping that soulful melodic lilt, and then "Alright" finishes the EP off with a more distinctively jazzed-out vibe that should please all manner of shape-throwing sound boys and girls.

Review: Whether making musically rich deep hazy or hazy, pitched-down beatdown jams, Alton Miller rarely gets it wrong - as is proved by the impressive number of labels queuing up to sign singles from the veteran Detroit producer. The latest is Noble Square, a fine imprint run by Chicagoan heavyweight Ricardo Miranda. Even by Miller's standards, "When The Morning Comes" is extra-special, featuring as it does distinctive vocals from Amp Fiddler and extra percussion programming by Kyle Hall. The trio's slick, smooth and groovy original version comes accompanied by a similarly tasty instrumental mix and a wonderfully woozy and jazzy remix by Fiddler and Hall that's arguably even better than the inspired A-side mix.

Review: It's hard to over-emphasize the impact that Mr Fingers' "Washing Machine" EP had when it was first released in 1986. The follow-up to the similarly influential "Mystery Of Love" - arguably the foundation stone for the deep house sound - the EP's track listing contained two cuts that would still make many people's 'best house tunes' list: "Washing Machine", a clattering, delay-laden early acid house workout that peppered a jacking drum beat with wonky TB-303 motifs, and the breath-taking deep house bliss of "Can You Feel It" in its original instrumental mix form. Both should be in your collection; if not, then snap up one of these red vinyl reissue copies ASAP. For the record, bonus deep house/acid house fusion cut "Beyond The Clouds" is also superb.

Review: FXHE return with the master of the mysterious OB Ignitt! Arriving roughly a year on from the last slab of Ignitt goodness, Mysterious finds OB on imperious form, once more showing off his penchant for excellent track titles and singular slant on bumping Detroit business. The title track is a veritable epic of unquantifiable emotive stakes, emerging from a heat treated fog and easing into a subtle yet beguiling rhythmic framework which coaxes you into a spell that grows stronger as the track charges electrically forth. Face down, "Celestial Salacious" has that same rough edged bass line growl to it, but the skipping percussion and building layers of instrumentation give the track real energy, whilst you can almost feel the funk dripping off final track "Chocolate City" which sounds like DJ Nature hocked up on MDMA.

  2. Romancing The Stone!
  3. Frogs
  4. Surpass
Review: Despite some FXHE releases containing playful artistic references to the films that undoubtedly referenced the titles, this Romancing The Stone double pack from Omar S is sadly lacking in any MS Paint renditions of the Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner 90s vehicle of the same name. It does however contain four more fine examples of the fact no one does it quite like Omar S. Lead track "Leave" sets the tone, as ripples of percussion emerge from a pool of simmering sonic emotion and embarks on a masterclass in slow build dancefloor revelation at breakneck pace. "Romancing The Stone" pulls from the same palette of anthemic Omar S productions as "Here's Your Trance, Now Dance" and "Psychotic Photosynthesis" as a lead array of synths, keys and chords weave with supple grace over crunchy drums - watch out for the track finishing abruptly. On the second 12", "Frogs" dovetails from a simple disco guitar loop into fucked up abstract acid techno territory with little prior warning whilst "Surpass" finds AOS ending with some anthemic maximal piano house.

Review: Although Omar S' excellent Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself album was released on CD a few months ago, it's the deluxe vinyl version that the real "Homie's and Tender Roni's" have been waiting for. Only Omar S could get away with spreading all of its 14 tracks across 4 12"s, split into two parts, but for those yet to sample its delights, the album's superb selection of tracks more than justifies the expense; Part 1 features the superb vocal turn from L'Renee on "Rewind", the insanely feelgood house of "The Shit Baby", the experimental dubbiness of "Helter Shelter" and thick set deep house of "Amalthea".

Review: Last time it was only Omar S that could do it; this time he's thanking us for letting him be Omar S. That's right the FXHE boss returns with an eagerly awaited new album brandishing some 14 tracks. Omar S albums naturally tend to sell themselves but, for those still curious, Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself sounds like a perfectly executed culmination of the ideas AOS has explored on the numerous 12"s since his last album. As soon as the crunchy mechanical dramatics of opening track "I'll Bring U Ah Lil Sumpin Back" launch into action you feel like you're in for quite the journey and the subsequent swerves through Detroit flavoured electro, piano flecked house, beatdown and techno come with satisfaction guaranteed.

Review: It's been ten years since outspoken Detroit house legend Omar-S launched his FXHE label, which is no mean feat for a DIY label. To celebrate the fact, he's decided to put together the first in a series of mix CDs highlight the much-loved imprints vast discography. Entitled simply 1, the 74 minute vinyl only set takes an entertaining saunter through the label's bulging back catalogue, showcasing a range of well-known cuts ("Here's Your Trance, Now Dance" etc) and what the producer calls "some shit [fans] might have slept on". Predictably, it makes for a sumptuous and suitably groovy blend, moving between bespoke soulful house (Omar-S's much-loved "Sex"), deep Detroit futurism (Omar-S and O B Ignitt's "Wayne County Hill Cops Part 2"), dreamy jack tracks (Jason Fine's "Jack Yo Bodda") and tactile tech-house (Fit and Gunnar Wendel's "Enter the Fog").

Openin' Up
  1. Openin' Up
  2. M Flight
Review: Pressing issues may have delayed the Pender Street Steppers' debut on Mood Hut Recordings, but this fresh single on PPU should more than plug the gap. Those who may have heard the Mood Hut outfit's Life In The Zone cassette last year will know what to expect: "Openin' Up" combines jittery conga percussion with rubbery bass and a positively uplifting sense of melody that nevertheless errs on the grubbier side of the spectrum, while "M Flight" is even more summery in it outlook, as a humorous '80s-inspired piece of melodic sampling propels its blissful chords and carefree bassline. As with all Mood Hut-affiliated releases, this won't last long...

Review: For those that pay attention to these things, there's been plenty of talk on the margins about The Pilotwings, a young Lyonnaise duo whose first two EPs on Brothers From Different Mothers got tongues wagging. Here they step up to Macadam Mambo, delivering an EP nominally inspired by classic Chicago house, but with clear Japanese, African and classic electro influences. Analogue sounding, inventive and hard to accurately pigeonhole, Une Nuit Aux Boxboys is a thoroughly engaging and entertaining affair. Highlights are plentiful, from the twittering new age melodies and snappy percussion of "Le Stabisme De Richard" and exotic shuffle of "Cerisier", to the "Promised Land" bliss of the more obviously Chicago-influenced title track.
