Review: AKSK is the collaborative project consisting of Adda Kaleh and Diego Herrera aka Suzanne Kraft. They present their debut LP on Running Back entitled 'Things We Do' which was recorded over the last several years between Kaleh's hometown of Bucharest, as well Los Angeles and Amsterdam - where Herrera divides his residence. His neon-lit and mysterious mood music that's typically awash in FM synthesis creates the perfect backdrop for Kaleh's captivating vocals on tracks like "Breaking", the sensual slow burner "Work" or the low slung and balmy balearica of "Special Times & Places". Coober Pedy University Band (Tornado Wallace and William Paxton) also provide remixes of the tracks "Four Lonely Words" and "Strong Like Nature".

Review: BSS stands for Bosconi Sound System: a trio comprised of Florentine label boss Fabio Della Torre, label staple Niccolo Daniel Rufo aka Rufus, plus Italian -American expat in Berlin: Mass Prod. The title reflects the contents of the album, as according to the label themselves: psychedelic/minimal techno and electro music, on a deep and dark tip that speaks to both the mind and the soul'. For the most part, it's an interesting departure from what many would usually associate with the label and its sub labels. While there's some great classic house tributes, like on the euphoric acid journey "Serotonin", channeling the best of the seminal Alleviated on the evocative "Eclipsed" or the acidic percolator-jack of "Black Out" - a respectful tribute to Relief Records' heyday in the early '90s. Then, there's some reduced techno reminiscent of early noughties m-nus, like on "Scaccomatto", while "No Flowers" channels the current in sounds of minimal-electro crossover: as heard on top labels of the moment like Cabaret and Time Passages.

Review: The late and eternally great Callisto sadly passed away before he could see his stunning creations get a second run in the spotlight. Eight years on from the first volume of retrospective gems from his modest but incredible catalogue, Guidance gather together another eight stunners that show just what an incredible talent this guy was. Bringing a level of expression and invention to deep house without losing a handle on the soul side of things, this is proof the genre can be true to itself and totally groundbreaking at the same time - a lesson a few more artists could take on board. Don't sleep on this double pack of wall to wall perfection.

Review: Berlin deep house heroes Cinthie and Stevn Aint Leavn are back on their ever reliable Beste Modus imprint for its ninth edition and they aren't messing around on this one. Quality classic house vibes all the way - a timeless Windy City vibe dominates the A side courtesy of Cinthie, who serves up the sultry and swing-fuelled late night groover "Everything I Say" before taking it back to '94 with the dusty and soulful "Good For You & Me". On the flip, Stevn Aint Leavn is in fine form, too, particularly on the moody and bass-driven back room dub "Quins".

  1. The 90's Generation (8:56)
  2. Cold Touch (8:08)
Review: Priku's Atipic Lab turns to local Romanian artist Cosmjn who returns in a fine vein of form. He makes no bones about his intentions and influences on the opener 'The 90's Generation' which is a dark, stark, cold tech beat that is albeit inviting. The hi hats spin endlessly and the bass is blippy and bleepy. 'Cold Touch' then heads off into the cosmos with roomy pads and an airy groove that is tinged with electro goodness. Both of these are timeless cuts that will work on a wide range of dance floors.

The Search For A Lost Dream EP
Cat: SN 1203. Rel: 03 Jul 12
  1. The Seach For A Lost Dream
  2. Seduced By The Sound
  3. After The Morning Comes
Review: Having skirted around a healthy spread of labels in the last two years, Deymare now appears on Soul Notes with his own take on pumped but smooth deep house of the 90s persuasion. On "After The Morning Comes" there's a strong swing to the drums that would sound right at home on a Guidance record, while "The Search For A Lost Dream" takes the same principles and slows it down to an easy glide, bubbling on a bed of bluesy keys. "Seduced By The Sound" chooses to take a slightly more jagged groove, while the pads create a more mystical kind of deepness.

Down (12")
Cat: PERLON 125. Rel: 26 Jun 20
  1. Vormlock (12:03)
  2. Down (16:02)
Review: Disordered Rhythm Metronomy may be a puzzling (and, let's face it, rather strange) artistic alias, but the two men behind the project, Ricardo Villalobos and Edward, have produced some of the most distinctive leftfield techno of the last decade. As a result, you'd expect their first joint EP to be a killer... and it is. A-side "Vormlock" is a rubbery, off-kilter treat, with the experienced duo peppering an elastic synth bassline and sparse, skittish drums with glitchy stabs, tipsy lead lines and all manner of wonky, out-of-this-world noises. Over on the flipside you'll find title track "Down", a deeper and dreamier chunk of spacey minimalism in which typical Villalobos style percussion and softly squelching bass comes cloaked in some suitably intergalactic synthesizer chords.

  17. Take A Run (feat Ada) (4:51)
Review: DJ Koze's music is very much suited to the album format. Although his last effort through this medium was back in 2013, his explorative nature and wide-eyed, improvisational style are simply made to branch out into areas outside of the more predictable house and techno formats. Knock Knock comes through on his own Pampa label, with its seventeen tracks all providing us with something different and wonderful, from slo-mo r&b sounds to funky, wayward house music that is most certainly at the 'outside' of the house spectrum. There are plenty of special guests, too, including Mano Le Tough, Sophia Kennedy, and many other relevant talents. A Koze speciality.

Review: Frankey & Sandrino are long time Watergate regards but have somehow not landed on the Berlin clubs own label yet. Now that changes with Nova, three tracks of dark and innovative tech house that come with a remix from Tiefschwarz. All the tracks stay low and subtle, with "Chimes" lead by a mysterious lead, "Nova" laced up with some soft, undulating acid and "Black Hole" getting a little more freaky with trippy bleeps and colourful synth chords. For their part, Tiefschwarz offer the most driving version complete with some dusty breaks

Review: This year, Richie Hawtin has been in a nostalgic mood. With the Plus 8 label he co-founded reaching the grand old age of 25, he's been revisiting his youth and releasing a series of anonymous - but barely disguised - white label 12" singles that doff a cap to his most famous early projects, including FUSE, Circuit Breaker and Plastikman. Here he gathers those together, alongside other similarly minded tracks, on the surprise full length From My Mind To Yours. Largely focused on drum machine jack-tracks, acid, electro and no-nonsense techno, the two-disc set's 16 tracks feel like products of another time. Given the quality of Hawtin's work throughout the '90s, though, this is no bad thing.

Review: Having previously only appeared on WotNot Music in the past couple of years, K15 now slides over to Wild Oats to deliver a wholly appropriate slab of fluttering house romanticism rich in Detroit dreams and Chicago cheekiness, wherever the music might have been conceived. The cheekiness is no doubt most noticeable on "GWRH" with its homage to "Gypsy Woman", turning it into a fluttering Latino house jam, but before that comes the plush bump n rub of "The Story Of Her Life". "Insecurities" gets into a sexier kind of deep house funk, which "Gratitude" dutifully carries on until "Yellow" can round the record out with some largely beatless piano business.

Review: Dan Kyo is best known as Australian artist Jordan Rakei. That name is mostly associated with super smooth and silky soul, lead by Rakei's own buttery smooth vocals and with lush production that is a fine fusion of R&B, neo soul and nu-jazz. Now though the man assumes his Dan Kyo alias for a more dance effort focussed album on Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section. It makes for a wealth of darker, more driving house tracks with bubbling basslines, gorgeous melodies and plenty of fine instrumentation as well as, of course, some of Rakei's famous vocals. Fans of Moodymann and Glenn Underground will adore.

Review: The Mountain People have a cult status amongst minimal house heads for good reason - their approach feeds the scene's finest parties, but they always retain a certain kink in their tracks that deviates from formulaic genre studies. So it goes on this latest drop on their own label, which leads in with a stunning long form track that packs a nuanced groove into the low end and plays with a limber acid line over the top, holding the filter down low and only opening it up at the choicest of moments. There's also some bouncier, swinging monosynth machine funk to be enjoyed, all executed with originality and subtlety - essential ingredients for the best minimal house.

Their new offering 'Sandpaper' is a proper serving of funky soul power, featuring Lidell's unmistakeable vocals, creamy Rhodes keys and swing-fuelled beats. Rhode welcomes new project Sound Support, in collaboration with Lars Dale of Dam Swindle (Heist) to deliver a punchy remix sure to get those heads down on the dancefloor. More late night mood music awaits, on the sensual groove of 'On The Nightshift'.

Review: Hot on the heels of her first appearance on Kai Alce's NDATL imprint, Roberta returns home to Night Moves. It's another quietly impressive collection of warming, immersive deep house cuts from the Brooklyn-based producer all told. It sees her cannily combine organic and electronic instrumentation on a quartet of groovy, sumptuously produced workouts. Check first the bongo-rich, Rhodes-laden vibe of deliciously hazy opener 'Nothing More', before bathing in the chunky, locked-in grooves, spacey synths and raw Clavinet stabs of tidy loop jam 'I Want Cha'. Over on side B, 'You Don't Say' sounds like a classic Soundstream disco-house number with added percussion and electric piano stabs, while 'Because I Can' is another languid, Ron Trent influenced number that sports some seriously good freestyle vocals.

Review: Rufus is no stranger to the Bosconi camp, having previously released numerous EPs on their Extra Virgin offshoot. Here he transfers to the main label with a pleasingly varied EP. Each of the four tracks offers something different to discuss, from the skittish, jazz-influenced house breaks, chanted vocals and stretched-out melody lines of "Stranger Than Paradise", to the psychedelic-tinged stomp of wobbly acid track "A Mirage". Elsewhere, "Sleepy Song" is a bouncy but undeniably laid-back deep house cut with subtle disco influences, while Herva's remix of "Stranger Than Paradise" sits somewhere between jazz-jungle, experimental techno, and classic breakbeat house.
