616LAB 02
616LAB 02 (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: 616LAB 02. Rel: 04 May 21
  1. 212 (5:16)
  2. 186 (6:38)
  3. 229 (5:38)
  4. 189 (6:03)
Review: Former Twig and Manitou contributors 616 have been silent since launching their 616 Lab series of 12" singles back in 2019, making this typically stripped-back and mind-altering EP long overdue. We'll forgive them though, because there's some seriously good material amongst the four numerically titled tracks on show. '212' for example, is a deliciously squelchy and spacey chunk of off-kilter tech-house-funk, while '186' adds chiming, Brown Album-era Orbital style melodies and acid lines to a hybrid electro/techno beat. The fun continues on the flip, where the UKG influenced acid two-step of '229' comes followed by the doom-laden sci-fi techno stomp of '189'.

Body Mind Spirit EP
Cat: JMEP 023. Rel: 06 May 21
  1. Meditation #1-2 (1:36)
  2. Body Mind Spirit (feat Dumama) (7:05)
  3. Saturn Return (6:37)
  4. Elevation #1-2 (2:51)
  5. Phoenix Rising (5:07)
  6. Nuit Des To'eres (8:18)
Review: Multi-instrumentalist Abase and drummer/producer Ziggy Zeitgeist come together for this fantastic collaboration, which explores deep grooves tinged with everything from jazz to psyche, funk to afro. The voice of the South African singer Dumama lends epic cut 'Body Mind Spirit' a rare spirituality while on 'Elevation #1-2', it is more a deeply inward mood that melts your heart. There is a brilliant looseness to 'Phoenix Rising' as its drums and bass percolate like coffee, while 'Nuit Des To'eres' closes with a broken rhythm that keeps you every much on your toes.

  2. Cut A Rug (4:21)
  3. Back To Tha Underground (5:35)
  4. 2 Black, 2 Strong (feat Hakim Green) (3:51)
Review: The Burrell Brothers (Rhano & Rheji) were by far the most prolific artists to release on seminal New York City imprint Nu Groove. Since Defected acquired the label's back catalogue, a new era brings new material by the pair for the first time in almost three decades - the latest arriving in the form of 'A.B.T. 2 (A Burrell Thang). It's that unmistakable sound of Stateside house music from the early '90s all over again as heard on 'Cut A Rug', wth a sound that many young producers of today try so hard to replicate. On the flip, we've got the druggy basement jam 'Back To Tha Underground' which is perfect afterhours tackle, as well as '2 Black, 2 Strong' (feat Hakim Green) and the famous "it's time for the percolator" vocal sample.

  1. Equation (4:35)
  2. Broken (7:07)
  3. Planetary Vision (6:05)
  4. Equation (Muelsa mix) (5:55)
Review: EYA's Lone Wolf sublabel continues to bring us the goods when it comes to deep, old-skool flavoured techno with a house bump. Aving cropped up on a various artists 12" on Lone Wolf last year, Ukranian producer AC130 makes a welcome return with this killer slab of party ready heat. 'Equation' plays the emotional card with its soaring pads, but up front it's a sprightly, upferrit jacker. 'Broken' has a cheekiness in its step, not least thanks to the wobbly lead chords hovering over the track. 'Planetary Vision' plies more of the bleepy, dreamy vibes without dialling back those crisp 909 drums, and then Muelsa steps up with a suitably blissed out remix of 'Equation' that slots in with the mood of the EP perfectly.

Cat: MIDA 02. Rel: 13 Apr 21
  1. Signal (5:46)
  2. Swim (5:46)
  3. Lock (3:27)
Review: Tallin's MIDA already got those in the know talking with its first EP, and now they come through with more interesting sounds. Ajukaja & Ats is a production duo form the same city and they have a swirling, synth heavy sound that traps your head amongst the stars. The drum breaks on 'Signal' are deft, sleeping you afloat next to a tight bass riff and those well sequenced synths. 'Swim' is all squelchy sounds, bright daubs and alien lifeforms over more busted beats and 'Lock' heads off on a cosmic adventure with jittery modulations, distorted and crunchy drums and smeared pads that bring a sense of serenity.

  2. Cosmos (Prins Thomas Diskomiks) (6:41)
  3. Cosmos (Telephones Subspace remix) (7:20)
  4. Cosmos (Beatless) (3:41)
Review: After All Is Well visited his friend Martin Iveson in his UK studio, the pair had lay down a few killer cuts, but the most standout of the lot was this one, which is sort of what it might sound like if Jean-Michel Jarre did Norwegian Cosmic disco. It's defined by the Korg Monopoly's weird paraphony and is rhythmically sustained by the Arp 2600 Bass line. Who else to remix but the legendary Prins Thomas, who layers in deep, funky bass, then Telephones explore the edges of the cosmos with a Subspace mix before a beatless version is also included.

Cat: AE 12LTD. Rel: 12 Apr 21
  1. Silent Vibrations (6:51)
  2. Astral (6:54)
  3. Drifting Sand (7:04)
  4. Uninhabited (7:28)
Review: Icy dub techno doesn't come classier than the strain you'll find on Iceland's AE Recordings. On their latest 12", they welcome Japanese producer Altone to the fold with four impeccably sculpted immersion chambers. There's a healthy amount of movement within the scenes Altone captures, avoiding the pitfall of dub techno becoming too soporific and instead creating a powerful sense of kinesis in the shimmer and shudder of the Basic Channel-indebted chords. 'Drifting Sand' is especially powerful, using a gorgeous, resonating tone which takes on an organic quality as it gently modulates over the subliminal rhythm section. Watch out though for the squashed, house-leaning funk of 'Uninhabited' if you want a low-key groover for the hypnotic crowd.

  3. Baby Rolen - "Metallic Humanoids" (5:59)
  4. Abdul Raeva - "Celestial Body" (Venus mix) (6:38)
Review: Gestal is leading the way in the Estonian scene and now it rightly continues its anniversary celebrations with a third volume of vital VA cuts. Anderson opens proceedings with his 'Stalactites,' a nice leggy electro cut with a heavy drum and bass combo but plenty of astral details. Things get more kinetic and travel much further from the blue planet on the superbly slick and serene cut from Long Island Sound, while Baby Rolen gets down and dirty on twisted bass and slapping drum hits that make you jerk. There is a much more dreamy vibe to Abdul Raeva's 'Celestial Body' meaning things close on a perfect emotional note.

  3. Kick It (6:37)
  4. Floss Is Boss (6:49)
Review: James Andrew takes the reins for the 11th EP on Subsequent and turns up four bumping techno, acid and bass fusions. 'Source of Sound' kicks off with a squirrelling bassline and party-ready synths and the brightness continues on 'The Shabadoo Dance' with its pumping bass and kicks and cosmic synth rays. 'Kick It' will jack any floor. It's robust and rubbery drums are a foundation off which twisted synths and steel hits all bounce then closing out is possibly the best of the lot, 'Floss IS Boos' with its loose synth leads and characterful tech-funk,

  2. Nathan Pinder - "Stutter" (6:56)
  3. The Trip - "Big Trouble" (5:50)
  4. Tip Top - "Control Alt Defeat" (6:39)
Review: Like its five predecessors, the sixth volume in the ongoing Nuances de Nuit series gathers together club-focused cuts from a quartet of producers, all of which could be considered rising stars of the underground tech-house scene. Sometime Subsequent contributor James Andrew kicks off proceedings with 'Reality Call', a bumping, elasticated bounce through spacey and swinging tech-house territory, before Nathan Pinder peppers a driving groove with deep space sounds and mid '90s US garage chords on 'Stutter'. Over on the reverse, The Trip offers up a tough, driving and melodic workout ('Big Trouble'), while Tip Top steals the show via the bleeping dub house hypnotism of 'Control Alt Defeat', where swelling pads, deep sub-bass and delay-laden electronics catch the ear.

Good Times During Bad Times EP
Cat: SER 048. Rel: 14 Apr 21
  1. Crazy 88 (10:29)
  2. Hemisphere (7:27)
  3. Blind Sequence (7:37)
Review: Fans of Romanian tech-house and minimalist techno should be well aware of the work of Vlad Arapasu. Since 2017 he's released a wealth of high-quality, club-ready material on the likes of Eastenderz, Kontent and Atapic. Here he makes his bow on Serialism with a typically tight, gently mind-altering three-tracker. The Bucharest-based producer sets his stall out on 'Crazy 88', a deliciously trippy number in which squiggly, acid-style electronics and spooky chords ride a percussively layered rhythm track and deep, bubbly bassline. 'Hemisphere' is pairs another typically glitchy, wonky rhythm track with hazy late-night stabs and metallic electronics, while 'Blind Sequence' peppers a shuffling minimal house groove with more mind-mangling electronic motifs and warming chords.

  1. Arapu - "Pe Final" (10:30)
  2. Sandro Kuhne - "Ephemeral" (7:44)
  3. Sandro Kuhne - "Sonorous" (8:16)
Review: If you're going to launch a label, debuting with something suitably impactful is arguably the best way to go. It would be fair to say that the freshly minted Confucious imprint has done just that. Their debut 12" is a rare collaborative outing from minimal/tech-house scene stalwart Arapu, who for this 12" has hooked up with lesser-known producer Sandro Kuhne, someone who has been active at the fringes of the scene since the early 2010s. Our pick of the bunch is A-side "Pe Final", a deep minimal workout that layers fluttering electronic motifs, dreamy chords and glitchy computer sounds atop a typically tactile tech-house groove. Elsewhere, "Ephermeal" expertly joins the dots between locked-in Romanian tech-house rhythms and spacey deep house musicality, while "Sonourous" is a fine combination of glitchy grooves and picturesque, glassy-eyed musical flourishes.

Review: Master minimalist Thomas Melcior is back with a new release on his Aspect Music imprint under the alias Back In Black. Although this is only a single sided release, there's all you need right here. The eponymous release features all the hallmarks of Melchior's singular sound: from its rich tapestry of ethereal - almost arcane- tapestry of elements reaching near spiritual moments, underpinned by meditative and clipped rhythm programming. Be prepared for yet another altogether magickal experience from the legend.

Review: In case you need bringing pop to speed, Locus is a brand new record label from the same vital team behind FUSE London. The sounds are a little quicker than those on the main label, with a future feel, electronic funk and cool to spare. Josh Baker takes the reins this time with the glossy vocal tech of 'Slippers All Summer' complete with nice cosmic pads. 'Fascinating' is a more jittery groove that tease and please with razor sharp hi hats and daubs of synth, then 'Jaffa' picks up the pace with acid bass, rave whistles and scintillating drum work. 'More Than Micro' closes on a nice heads down deep house vibe for the calming and late night hours.

Review: Sacred Rhythm head honcho Joe Claussell must be one of the most relentless artists out there. Each new weekly seemingly brings more of his spiritually intense reworks and this time out he is doing his thang to two tracks by The Bayaya Citizens. His take on 'The Mofocongoietric' is arresting thanks to its taught synths and off-grid keys all colouring in a prickly, percussive groove. 'Ban Ban Eya' (Joaquin Joe Claussell Cosmic Arts dubness) is just as intense and busy with those rapturous synths extending up the heavens and last of all original tune 'The Healers' brings some afro grooves to the EP.

Their latest missive comes courtesy of the effervescent John Beltran and his lesser-known Nostalgic project. What we get is fully remastered versions of a trio of tracks from 2006's Going Home EP. Review: Idris Bena has made a big impact in just a short couple of years. With a delicate touch and knack for excellent breakbeats and harmony rich house, he now steps out with a wide repertoire of sounds on the Rakya label outta France. Judging by the title, 'Danceteria' is an homage to the club of the same name. It sure does have some old school energy to the bristling drum programming and metallic chords, with yelping vocals adding extra fuel. They joyful bangers keep on coming with 'Bird's Tale', old school stabs and buoyant bassline of 'Devotion' and exquisite melodies of high speed stepper, 'Now I Float.'

Bill Beaver is a Sound Signature and Mahogany Music alumnus, Darren Abrams wrote the classic 'Loose Piano' on Third Ear Recordings and Darryl Tis is the third piece of the puzzle. This EP features a repress of 'Its The Life,' a forgotten classic from the D that first came in 2002 and now costs a small fortune on Discogs. As well as the original, NDATL's front man Kai Alce remixes and two additional jazzy tinged, deep house gems are also included on this gold standard EP.

Review: Steve O'Sullivan's Bluetrain alias is one of the most revered in techno. Its output spans multiple decades and the quality level has always remain high. It is a project the serves up precision minimal sounds, steeped in dub history and always designed for dance floor hypnosis. 'Relacion Especial' is one of the more playful cuts he has produced, with a catchy trumpet riff layer over silky drums and whimsical chords. With his remix, German wizard Move D blisses it out to make for a perfect early evening house jam, while Joaquin Lledo ups the pressure and brings sun worshipping synths to the fore. A tidy package indeed.

Review: Boys Noize and Defected seem like rather odd bedfellows on paper. The former is known for making caustic, in your face club tracks that are aggressive and heavily textured. The latter is one of house music's most smooth and feel good labels. Yet with 'All I Want (feat Jake Shears)' they somehow find a sweet spot between the two. The tune has gauzy chord vamps and and a rigid beat, but the vocal is catchy and smooth, while the bass sequence is sure to lock in any crowd. The remixes take in star-gazing, upbeat disco house funk and dub, stripped back and trance inducing minimalism from DJ Tennis.

Review: Reflections Of Yesterday is a new label 'with an eye on the future and a subtle nod to the past.' For its inaugural release, they have tapped two current heroes of the techno scene to present on each side of Reflection 1. Leeds' Al Bradley of 3AM Recordings is in fine form here, with the deep, down and dirty afterhours bounce of 'Pale Blue Dot' followed by the old school acid house swagger of 'In Flagrente Delicto'. On the flip are two more tracks, this time by Mancunian Scott Hallam of Axia Records who presents another serving of irresistible 303 wiggle on the glorious 'Kettle Crusader' followed by the high tech soul of 'Modern Senses' and its respectful nod to The Motor City.

  3. Tool For Lovers (5:33)
  4. I Knew You Would (6:44)
  5. Tears Of The Fallen Angel (6:04)
  6. Neptun (5:10)
Review: The next Shall Not Fade release comes from Berlin-based Marc Brauner, he of label and popular Youtube channel Houseum. He serves up some more old school deep house flavors you've come to expect on the Rarities EP, jam packed with half a dozen late night expressions in mood music. From the early '90s Chicago bounce of 'Too Real', to the bright like neon tech house of 'Things I Did' - it's clear that there's a wide variety of moods and grooves on here. Over on the flip, 'I Knew You Would' is a heartfelt affair for those saucer eyed moments under the strobe lights, while 'Neptun' respectfully takes its cues from that timeless F- Communications vibe of old. Tip!

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Following on from a sell-out first release, Serenity Records returns with a four track double-header from Thoma Bulwer & Anna Wall. In alignment with the label's policy of allowing the artists commissioned to choose a mental-health charity of their choice, 002 dedicates all its proceeds to Centrepoint - an organisation which seeks to combat the ever-growing problem of homelessness. The EP spans across the full spectrum of Techno, with the cuts varying from soft melodic textures, floaty synth work and a B1 that wouldn't stand at all out of place in a peak-time club setting - a nice surprise from this exciting new not-for-profit label...

Review: Atalanta's Byron The Aquarius has established himself as one of electronic music's most interesting artists. The super skill musician is a virtuoso on the keys and dab hand with making beats. He's got a wide range of sounds in his arsenal and is a perfect fit for the raw, MPC loving Apron label run by Funkineven, which is where lands now. This fulsome EP takes you on a jazz tinged house trip to the edges of the galaxy with far-sighted chords and reflective moods one minute and noodling, funk laced beat pieces the next. It's as high in quality as it is timeless.

Review: Calou hails from Bern, Switzerland and brings plenty of refreshingly air vibes to these new tunes for Straight Ahead Music. 'Amnesia House' is catchy and melodic, with nice crisp drums and shiny pads bringing uplifting feels. 'Miami Heat' is a more physical house jam with leggy drums and soulful vocal coos and 'Borderland' then picks up the pace to glide along on a nice bassy groove that has yawning pads and a grand scale. Proving he has plenty of different tricks up his sleeve, closer 'Going Up' offers yet another interesting take on house music, as this time the melodies get more sci-fi and late night.
