  8. Makin' A Living (5:48)
Review: The African Dream are best known for their gorgeously deep and persuasive "Make A Livin", which first appeared on this cult album back in 1994. It is the work of Lee Rodriguez and has now been remastered and reissued in all its glory. It has long been sought after by those in the know and for good reason; the tunes on it are definitively deep, with M1 basslines, afro tinged drum programming and cuddly, rubbery drum programming that gets deep into your soul. "Jazz Impressions" is one of the many standouts, with its sliding, lo-fi beats and brisling atmosphere all taking you to the heart of a sweaty and steamy basement party. Pure vibes.

  1. Moonspa (7:49)
  2. Haven (6:05)
  3. Simplex City (7:14)
  4. Noga (7:40)
Review: 2019 was a breakthrough year for Adam Longman Parker AKA Afriqua, thanks in no small part to the release of his brilliant debut album on R&S (the mixed-up and imaginative "Colored"). It's a curious quirk then that his latest single features tracks not recorded last year, but rather way back in 2017. It shows a producer trying to take tech-house in interesting new directions whilst still maintaining the club-focused rhythms and late night hypnotism frequently associated with the style. We're particularly enjoying the melancholic, funk-fuelled deep-tech eccentricity of "Haven" and the colourful melodies of the decidedly druggy "Noga", though lolloping and layered opener "Moonspa" may well be the best of an off-kilter bunch.

Pyramid EP (12")
Cat: DWS 001. Rel: 27 May 20
  1. Pyramid (9:12)
  2. Pyramid (As One remix) (6:26)
  3. Mime (7:01)
  4. Pyramid (Oliver Moon remix) (7:24)
Review: Oliver Moon introduces the Dancing With Strangers record label, alongside good friend and fellow DJ/Producer Paul Louth aka Agile Kind - who inaugurates the label here. While it may have been a long time between drinks for the veteran DJ on the production front (he's intermittently created music under aliases like Water Walk and Soulfish over the years) he proves that slow and steady wins the race on the "Pyramid EP". The emotive vibe of early '90s British IDM and US techno-soul is eminent throughout. From the sensual deepness of the title track or B side cut "Mime" which are reminiscent of classics by the likes of DaRandLand, not to mention the full throttle rework by legend Kirk Degiorgio under the As One moniker on the flip.

Wisdom (12")
Cat: MKIL 002. Rel: 20 May 20
  1. Catacombs2 (12:29)
  2. Globus (8:53)
Review: The most surprising release this week comes from Thomas Melchior's newly inaugurated My King Is Light label, presenting its sophomore release courtesy of veteran U.S. producer Amir Alexander. The Vanguard Sound main man isn't usually known for his minimal house exploits, but sure proves his talent for it here on the 'Wisdom' EP. A side "Catacombs2" treads along a ghostly trail similar to Melchior's own work, with all its deep and hypnotic elements aimed squarely at the afterhours dancefloor. On the flip, we have the lean and subtle groove of "Globus" which continues with the arcane and 'magickal' vibes; its bouncy melodic bass works your feet, while the warped/operatic vocal tones flip your mind!

Review: Tessellate are back for their sixth release, with another one by France's Xavier Dusclaux AKA Armless Kid. After a number of impressive outings on the likes of Rekids, Let's Play House and Traxx Underground, Dusclaux turns to the London based label with three riveting tracks for any dancefloor occasion. From the hi-tech soul of "Drop Down" and it's honorable nod to the Detroit sound (not to mention an evocative rework by hot duo Opal Sunn) to the swing-fuelled tech house hypnotism of "Category" (featuring MJOG) and the sensual late night deepness of "Les Bo Jours" (Wonky Funky) - this certainly is one well rounded EP by an ascendant producer.

  3. Wild In The Isles (6:45)
Review: The enigmatic Au Pair imprint resurfaces for its third edition, featuring yet more dusty and understated grooves. On 003, be utterly hypnotised by the deep and woozy boompty business of "An Understanding", while tripped-out grooves that are perfectly engineered for sleep deprived Sunday mornings are catered for on "Nothing Else". The moody B-side cut "Wild In The Isles" is similarly perfect for those moments of solitary paranoia on the dancefloor. Overall, this release will certainly appeal to fans of afterhours minimal house, in the vein of recent releases by 'Rominimal' heroes such as Crihan and G76 - tip!

Review: Veteran UK producer and DJ Aubrey finds himself on Brixton's Dream Diary label for his next offering. As always his brand of techno is laced with ambient lushness and superbly smooth and seductive grooves that roll deep. None more so than on opener "Abstract Chemistry" with its gently persuasive rhythms and dub-wise swagger. "The Slicer" is lighter and airier, with dancing drums and vocals all working it into a lather before "Distant Object" journeys deep into the cosmos with its hypnotic, loopy bass and glassy melodies to close out this most classy outing.

  3. Kez (7:15)
Review: Seminal reissue alert! Baby Ford had already been a chart-baiting acid house superstar by the time he launched the PAL SL label in 1996. He'd left behind the major label scene and moved firmly back into the underground with exploratory techno releases on Ifach and collaborations with Mark Broom. This new label marked a shift for Ford though, setting him up for the trips into minimalist club tracks that have been his bread and butter for decades now. From the machine soul trysts of "Slow Hand" to the woozy techno thrust of "Tall For His Height" and the atmospheric house wriggle of "Kez", this release is a classic through and through. Beat the sharks and nab a copy of this long out-of-print gem.

Review: Mannheim's Sukhumvit returns after a little time out to focus on brother imprints such as NCSS and Yaji Project, with a release by Mancunian Josh Baker who's on duty for this orange beauty, delivering four fresh cuts for the dancefloor - no remix needed! Four strong cuts on "EP Y": from the ethereal hypnotism of A side cut "In Two Minds" followed by the tough rolling funk attack of "Barge Deluxe" and its subtle French touch (think Djebali!). On the flip, standout track "Laid Back Trax" with it bumpy and swing-fuelled groove hammers the message home in style. Tip!

Cat: PUSS 20201. Rel: 21 May 20
  1. Hey Ladies (Vox) (6:15)
  2. Hey Ladies (dub) (6:14)
Review: Having recently impressed with a deliciously off-kilter - and hugely impressive - debut album on Studio Barnhus (last year's must-check "Once Upon A Passion"), Stockholm's Bella Boo dons the alternative BB alias and offers up a cheeky, acid-laden future anthem. In its original A-side form, "Hey Ladies" sees the rising star top a sweaty, all-action house beat with dreamy chords, layered R&B/soul vocals, deliciously dirty bass and waves of angular, mind-altering acid lines. It's a brilliant combination of elements all told, with Boo's smart production and on-point arrangement making it a genuine peak-time banger for underground DJs. The accompanying vocal-free Dub Mix is superb, too, with the Swede replacing sampled R&B snippets with bubbly electronic motifs and even wilder acid lines.

  1. The Sleeziest (9:57)
  2. Whats On Yr Mind (7:04)
  3. All The Way (5:16)
  4. Quick Escape (6:03)
Review: Given the forthright, analogue-powered sound of his productions, Faster Action member Robert Bergman seems a neat fit with Ron Morelli's L.I.E.S. label. For that reason, it's surprising to learn that this self-titled EP is his first release on the long-running U.S imprint. He's pulled out all the stops too, opening with the ten-minute journey through gently unsettling electronic motifs, locked-in machine grooves and odd noises that is "The Sleaziest". Arguably even more off kilter is the Chicago jack/industrial EBM fusion of "What's On Yr Mind", while "All The Way" is a disconcerting slab of spaced-out lo-fi techno. As for closing cut "Quick Escape", it cannily joins the dots between wayward, psychedelic acid and breathless EBM rhythms.

  3. Five (5:29)
Review: Late last year Italian artist and self-proclaimed "black belt ninja" Black Tongue debuted with a two-tracker that genuinely set our pulses racing. Here the man or woman of mystery returns with an even more expansive EP, which we can happily report is full to bursting with tasty treats. A-side workout "Three" offers a fine balance between jazz-funk-fired musicality, quietly impressive musicianship and infectious grooves that make the most of some deliciously loose-limbed drumming. The producer's love of classic house is explored on "Four", where the action revolves around snappy, Chicago house style machine drums, warehouse-ready stabs and an undulating keyboard bassline, while "Five" is a colourful take on jazz-funk/electrofunk fusion that reminded us of the combined output of Dego and Kaidi Tatham.

Main Thing (blue vinyl 7")
Cat: RNT 45005. Rel: 08 Apr 20
  1. Main Thing (3:32)
  2. FTF (Freak The Funk) (4:02)
Review: For the latest salvo in their occasional "45" series of seven-inch singles, Brooklyn imprint Razor-N-Tape has turned to Pittsburgh boogie badman and boom-bap hip-hop maker Buscrates (real name Orlando Marshall). A-side "Main Thing" is a revivalist synth-boogie gem that breathes new life into a well-known tribute to "Mary Jane", layering the pitched-down vocal over what sounds like a fresh bed of synth-bass, colourful lead lines and head-nodding drums. Just as good is up-tempo flipside "F.T.F (Freak The Funk)", a vocoder-laden slice of deep electrofunk goodness that hits all the right notes. If you love synth-powered 1980s sounds, you need this in your life.

Review: We'd say it was a smart move by Shall Not Fade snapping up an EP from Byron The Aquarius, but his track record is so good that there's little or no risk involved. The Atlanta-based producer has yet again delivered the goods, confidently striding crunchy analogue deep house jazziness (the synth-and-piano-laden opener "Feelings Is It Real"), 21st century broken house/jazz-funk fusion (the jacking drum machine fills, Kaidi synth motifs and acid squelch of "Age Of Ultron (featuring MDMA)", spacey deep techno futurism ("Techno Is Black (Respeck)"), woozy deep house warmth ("Falling In Love (Dub)") and intergalactic downtempo beats (classy closing cut "CyBoTrAx").

  4. Juzel - "Tetris In The Club" (7:23)
Review: Andalucian imprint Rationalism is back with its first EP for 2020, featuring straight-up club beats from two young and prominent electronic music producers. Homeboy Cajal (Madtech) takes care of the A side with the groovy and swingin' minimal funk of "Housy Beat" which reminds us of that classic Minibar vibe, while second offering "Morning" is classic deep house for the afterhours - just like the name suggests. On the flip, we have Argentinian Juzel (Frost Plates) who delivers the Todd Terry influenced tool that is "Esouh" followed by the lean and trippy boompty-boomp of "Tetris In The Club". Basically, more great tunes from Martin Bellomo's respected label.

  2. Tiger (Giuliano Lomonte remix) (7:08)
  3. Technopolis (6:27)
  4. Remain (5:59)
Review: Is there a techno producer quite as capable of crafting melodious, far-sighted and wonderfully positive techno workouts as Derek Carr? If there is, we've yet to find them. There's perhaps slightly more of an audible tech-house influence at work on his latest EP, but the producer's alluring obsession with colourful electronic motifs, glassy-eyed pads and spacey sci-fi sounds remains. The A-side is all about "Tiger", a glittering sprint through swelling chords, snappy machine beats and lilting sunrise melodies that's subsequently given a chunkier, funkier tech-house makeover (with added deep bleeps) by Giuliano Lomonte. Over on side B, Carr deftly joins the dots between bittersweet melancholia and sun-kissed warmth on deep electro number "Technopolis", before painting broad brush strokes of aural colour on emotive techno gem "Remain".

  1. Marvin (Casey Mistake mix) (5:02)
  2. Marvin (dub That Got Away) (5:05)
Review: Having previously worked his magic on classic cuts from Diana Ross, Luther Vandross and Teddy Pendergrass - among others - Bridge Boots boss Caserta has now moved on to Marvin Gaye. He's grabbed the acapella from a classic song - in this case one of Gaye's duets with Diana Ross, "My Mistake (Was To Love You)"- and incorporated it into a brand new track. The A-side "Casey Mistake Mix" sits somewhere between early '80s boogie and the mid-80s proto-house sound created by Boyd Jarvis, Timmy Regisford and Paul Simpson. Interestingly, Gaye and Ross's vocals fit it like a glove. The flipside "Dub That Got Away" is an altogether more bumpin' garage-house workout rich in cut-up vocals snippets and wobbly analogue bass.

  4. Astrid (6:58)
Review: Over the last few years, we've heard plenty of reworks of obscure, Cold War-era cuts from Eastern Europe, though few from the then Soviet Union. The shadowy CCCP Edits series, which here makes its bow, promises to set the record straight. There's plenty to set the pulse racing, from the bubbly acid bass, bustling funk breaks and hip-house breaks of "Malodym" and "Ya Zdes" (the latter with added deep house drowsiness and Balearic intent), to the spoken male vocals, high-tempo electro beats and lo-fi guitars of "Knopochki". Best of all though is closing cut "Astrid", which isn't really Russian at all, but rather an extra-percussive, bass heavy samba-house rework of an old Astrud Gilberto track. We'll forgive them though as it's really rather good.
