  3. Nostromo (Viceversa remix) (8:44)
  4. Visible Things (7:23)
Review: Depth Over Distance is an Amsterdam based label founded by old members of the SEKOIA Collective. Previous releases have come from McGregor, Eversines and Dieru and this latest one is by mysterious Romanian producer Bucurie, with a wide selection of moods and grooves on the Nostromo EP. From the glacial dub techno deepness of "Lights Will Guide You "to the mesmerising tech house thumper that is the title track - remixed by East End Dubs under his Viceversa alias. Final track "Visible Things" is exactly the kind of rolling and ethereal magic that nails that true 'Rominimal' vibe.

Review: Having recently revived his Utopia Project alias for a surprise new 12" on Running Back, legendary New York deep house producer Rheji Burrell returns to Gerd Janson's label with an EP credited to another one of his Nu Groove era pseudonyms, NY Housin' Authority. "Out Of Body Experience" boasts seven tracks, all of which explore similar sonic pastures to the project's classic, late '80s/early '90s material. That means tactile synthesizer basslines, ear-catching melodies, classic house synth sounds and drum machine beats rich in Burrell's usual infectious swing. Highlights include the breezy and life-affirming jazziness of "3rd Time", the bass-heavy, intergalactic thump of "5th Time" (a cut that would neatly fit into Bleep techno-influenced sets) and the summery warmth of "2nd Time".

  2. Niko Maxen - "Homecoming" (5:47)
  3. Sakro - "How Did I Get Here" (8:13)
  4. Moett C, Miguelito - "Derriere" (6:12)
Review: Since launching last year, Mexcian label Honne Music has so far offered up two multi-artist EPs packed with tidy tech-house and atmospheric minimal techno. The imprint's third outing explores similar sonic territory, showcasing tracks from a mixture of local and international artists. Old hand Lee Burton kicks things off via the intoxicating shuffle of "MAO" - all swirling sci-fi chords, minor key melodies and bubbly bass - before Niko Maxen delivers a fuzzier, slightly weirder take on intergalactic tech-house ("Homecoming"). Over on side B, Sarko emphasizes mind-mangling bass on the trippy tech-funk of "How Did I Get Here", while Moett C and Migueleto invite us to drift through deep space on the weightless, early morning warmth of EP highlight "Derriere".

Traffic Jam
Traffic Jam (12" reeditado)
Cat: DCH 002. Rel: 04 Aug 20
  1. Traffic Jam (7:31)
  2. Bus Stop (7:06)
Review: Matthew "Bushwacka!" B may not be as high profile a producer as he once was, but it's worth remembering that he was once one of the leading lights of both the early UK tech-house movement and the recently revived breakbeat house sound. The two tracks featured here touch on both styles in a roundabout way, and were first released way back in 1997. "Traffic Jam" is an insatiable, funk-fuelled peak-time workout that sees the London scene mainstay pepper a vintage, electro-influenced breakbeat house groove with UK garage style bass, fizzing scratch sounds, warm deep house chords and selected vocal samples. "Bus Stop" meanwhile is jaunty and melodious, with chiming, ear-pleasing riffs riding crunchy house drums and the kind of booming bassline that was all the rage in London at the time of recording.

  1. Joe Le Taxi (5:29)
  2. Joe Le Taxi (Acid Tool) (5:28)
Review: Butch has been turning out essential club sounds for many years. He has a wide range of styles in his arsenal and always manages to come up with original ideas despite being so prolific for so long. "Joe Le Taxi" is a mad acid cut that has off-grid claps, drunken kicks and a female vocal lost in it all. It's the sort of unhinged tune to drop at the peak of the night and watch the reaction from afar. On the flip is an Acid Tool version that is even more wonky and unhinged, with the squirrelling acid line doing even more work.

Cat: SLANG 50299. Rel: 31 Jul 20
  1. Never Come Back (Floating Points remix) (9:00)
  2. Sister (Floating Points remix) (7:07)
Review: Having already seen his synth-pop-meets-piano-house gem "Never Come Back" successfully remixed by Four Tet and Morgan Geist, Dan "Caribou" Snaith has now handed over the parts to Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points. While those versions retained the core elements of Snaith's warm and ear-pleasing original mix, Shepherd has chosen to re-imagine it as the kind of positive, spacey, musically detailed and rushing late night deep house jam with which he originally made his name a decade ago. It has serious sub-bass weight, too, and is one of his most impressive club-focused outings for some time. It's worth buying the 12" for that mix alone, but his wonderfully deep, sub-heavy, garage-influenced rework of another "Suddenly" album track, "Sister", is also superb. In other words, you need this in your life.

Cat: SLANG 50298. Rel: 31 Jul 20
  1. Never Come Back (Four Tet remix) (7:57)
  2. Never Come Back (Morgan Geist remix) (7:25)
Review: When Caribou, Four Tet and Morgan Geist appear on the same 12", you know it's going to be huge. And it is. First up, Kieran Hebdan takes "Never Come Back" and warps the bass, builds plenty of tense percussive energy and layers in some sci-fi synths that take the track into the next dimension. It's epic, as is always the way with Hebden, and ripe for some rave reactions. Cult neo-disco innovator Morgan Geist does something completely different - his drums skip and ping, with a breathy and soul drenched vocal next to lush cosmic chords. It's bouncy, playful, brilliant.

  4. Brooklyn (4:03)
  5. Chilly (4:41)
Review: This is a red hot new funk 12" for the super cool Jackie Brown label. It features Marcello linking up with Antonio Rapa on drums and Blake C.S. Franchetto on the bass and they are all on fire across these high speed cuts. "Welcome" is tight and driving as you like, with cosmic keys taking flight, "Shark" is more playful and lush with eve more astral vibes and then things take a turn into late night sounds on the golden "Malo Pivo". "Brooklyn" expires the sort of broken beat you'd find in London's underground and "Chilly" closes with rich jazz stylings. Overall, this is an excellent 12".

Cat: PTX 026. Rel: 07 Jul 20
  1. Strong Sense (9:26)
  2. Strong Sense (Tobias remix) (7:34)
Review: Cassy has largely been focusing on her own Kwench label in the past few years, exploring the crossover between pop sensibilities and underground dance music culture. She's carrying that through to her appearance on Pressure Traxx, while clearly nodding to her roots in the minimal scene with the elegant, spellbinding "Strong Sense", all underpinned by her subdued vocal. Tobias steps up for a remix on the B side which takes the track in a shivering techno direction that provides the perfect urgent foil to the cosy house demeanour of the original.

Review: We were rather impressed by the first volume in the CCCP Edits series, a re-edit imprint seemingly dedicated to offering up reworks of obscure, largely unknown musical gems from Soviet-era Russia, so hopes are sky-high for this second instalment. We shouldn't have worried. Opener "Nochi" is a deep, woozy and off-kilter chunk of two-step garage/jazz-funk fusion, while "Ne Mojet Bit" is the most Balearic electro track we've heard in yonks. The fun continues on the flip, where the glassy-eyed deep pop-goes-two-step flex of "T=H2O" comes accompanied with the hip-house era breakbeat-house warmth (and jazzy keys) of standout track "Hare, Krishna".

  1. Tears Of Joy (10:44)
  2. Al's Razerblade (3:50)
  3. Morning (7:22)
  4. Life On Earth (5:25)
Review: The third part of Joe Claussell's Joaquin Unofficial Edits & Overdubs series is as strong as the first two with four Special Extended Versions making for some joyous listening. "Tears Of Joy" is rapturous house music with gospel overtones that canto fail to bring the soul. "Al's Razerblade" is a lo-fi funk mash up with a strident rhythm section and "Morning" is golden soul with soaring strings that brings some 60s magic to the dance floor. "Life On Earth" is the steamiest of the lot, with tropical sounds and mad jazzy chords all laced with wild percussion that bristles with energy.

  1. Discombobulated Wiring (5:18)
Review: Joaquin "Joe" Clausell launched the "Xperiments" series back in 2016 with a box set containing two single-sided flexi-discs and a seven-inch single, all of which contained some pretty spaced-out sounds. Four years on he's decided to offer-up a new instalment in the avant-garde project: a single-sided seven-inch presented in a special hand-made sleeve by artist Akemi Shimada. Interestingly, the featured track, "Discombobulated Wing", is far more club-ready than its predecessors, with Clausell layering krautrock-esque treated guitars and Tangerine Dream style analogue synthesizer parts atop a low-slung, restless bass guitar line and sparse house drums.

Indeed, prepare to turn on, tune in and drop out to the early '90s influenced bleep 'n' bass experience of "Something's Going To Happen", hear the drummer get wicked on on the acid-washed breaks of "Compute'' while B side cut "Rhythm Activated" is exactly kind of wacky new rave fantasy you'd hear on the dancefloor at Hoppetosse or the Libertine label parties in Berlin. More wicked material by an underrated legend - tip!

  1. French (5:44)

  3. 111 (4:57)
Review: Before making his name as St Germain, French producer Ludovic Navarre released music under a number of other aliases. One of these was Deepside, originally a 1992 collaboration with Sub System partner Guy Rabiller that quickly became a Navarre solo project. The "Tolerance EP" (1993) was Navarre's first solo Deepside release and has long been considered something of an under-discussed European techno classic. As this reissue proves, it's lost none of its allure. The EP's undisputed highlight remains A-side "French", a glistening, sun-bright chunk of foundational tech-house positivity shot through with Motor City style machine soul and luscious chords aplenty. Elsewhere, "IL" is warm, soft-touch deep techno at its very best, while "111" is a stripped-back acid box jam.

Review: Demuir has plenty of accolades and achievements under his belt, from regular collaborations with DJ Sneak and Cassy to releases on Music For Freaks, Hot Creations, Robsoul and more. Now the Toronto-based artist is on Darius Syrossian's Moxy Muzik with a seriously rubbery slice of peak-time house music to get bodies jacking in the loosest possible way. "Soul Muzak" hinges around a wonky, modulating synth line that will do untold damage in any up-for-it party setting. Demuir's old sparring partner DJ Sneak steps up on the B-side to deliver the "Banger Dub Remix" of the track, honing things down to a tracky bounce in his instantly identifiable house gangster style.

Review: Over the last decade, Large Records has concentrated largely on digital releases, though their occasional vinyl outings - and specifically the "Wax Weapons" series of compilation style EPs - are rarely less than essential. Volume three kicks off via the chunky, bass-heavy bounce and fizzing, Todd Edwards style cut-up melodic snippets of Scott Diaz and Timmy P's "True Blue", before Never Dull takes us further towards classic deep house territory courtesy of the bustling brilliance of "United, Under One Roof". Elsewhere, Finest Wear's "That '90s Groove" is an ear-pleasing slab of 1990s U.S house revivalism, while Colorjaxx's energetic closer "One Night In The City" adds Mike Dixon/Greenskeepers style filtered jazz samples to a chunky Chi-town beat.

Review: After some great EPs for tap labels such as Metereze, Half Baked and Tavera Tracks in recent times, Greek wunderkind John Dimas is back to inaugurate new imprint Synq with the 'Rave Wave' EP. As the name may suggest, there are retro-tinted party tunes that see Dimas make the journey into classic techno sounds like many others in the minimal house fraternity have tuned into in recent years - and he does a damn fine job if we do say so. On the A side, we have "Transmatik" and there's a clear enough reference found in the title, incorporating Rhythim is Rhythim style syncopated drums effectively for Motor City inspired number. While on the flip, the hi-tech soul themes continue on the acid-laced future funk of the title track.

Review: Barely two weeks have passed since Andrei Popa AKA Direkt delivered a strong contribution to the Atipic Lab series, but the Romanian producer is already back in action. "Language Point" is, of course, another rock-solid outing, this time on debutant label Thinc. Check first the deliciously spacey, sci-fi sounds of purist tech-house opener "Language Point", a slick, synth-heavy and far-sighted affair that's later given a glitchier, more contemporary tech-tinged makeover by remixer Vincentiulian. Direkt continues to dance his way through distant constellations on hypnotic EP highlight "Ephemeris", before combining chunkier tech-house beats, bubblier electronics and broken computer sounds on trippy, heads-down closing cut "Nova".

Review: While many of Disclosure's EPs have tended to focus on festival-ready and radio-friendly numbers, "Ecstasy" has both eyes firmly on club dancefloors. Proof arrives via the surging title track, a filter-sporting bumper that offers distinctive nods towards late '90s "French Touch" house and Basement Jazz's superior early work, and the gleefully Afro-disco-flavoured Echo Roosevelt collaboration that follows, stomping summer anthem "Tondo". Elsewhere, they cannily turn Boz Scraggs' blue-eyed soul classic "Lowdown" into a loose-limbed, rubbery house workout on "Expressing What Matters", serve up some chant-along Afro-house hedonism ("Etran") and keep fans of their usual bass-heavy big room flavours happy via wonky closer "Get Close".

  1. Vormlock (12:03)
  2. Down (16:02)
Review: Disordered Rhythm Metronomy may be a puzzling (and, let's face it, rather strange) artistic alias, but the two men behind the project, Ricardo Villalobos and Edward, have produced some of the most distinctive leftfield techno of the last decade. As a result, you'd expect their first joint EP to be a killer... and it is. A-side "Vormlock" is a rubbery, off-kilter treat, with the experienced duo peppering an elastic synth bassline and sparse, skittish drums with glitchy stabs, tipsy lead lines and all manner of wonky, out-of-this-world noises. Over on the flipside you'll find title track "Down", a deeper and dreamier chunk of spacey minimalism in which typical Villalobos style percussion and softly squelching bass comes cloaked in some suitably intergalactic synthesizer chords.

Times Of Change
Cat: 4EVR 005. Rel: 29 Jul 20
  1. Times Of Change (feat De'Sean Jones) (7:29)
  2. Move 4WRD (feat Britt Frappier) (5:23)
  3. Beautifully Equipped (6:13)
  4. Troopcafe (6:13)
Review: Producer and keyboardist Jon Dixon lands on his own 4EVA 4WRD label with some timeless house tracks that bring all his majestic melodic skills to the fore. "Times Of Change" (feat De'Sean Jones) is a mellifluous, comically minded cut with a fantastic lead sax and bubbly chords, and "Move 4WRD" (feat Britt Frappier) then gets more fluttering and percussive, with flappy hits and dreamy vocals making for a light and airy groove. There are dancing synths and lush astral colours on "Beautifully Equipped" but closer "Troopcafe" might be the best of the lot with its deft, arching pads and shimmering broken beats.
