Review: Sushitech toast 15 years with a plush new edition of one of the label's classic albums. Delano Smith hit a high watermark with An Odyssey when he first dropped it in 2012, and it still sounds utterly flawless as a shining example of Detroit house. From the slinky funk of 'Survival' to the minimalist dub inflections of 'Trust In Someone', this is the positively classy end of the club music spectrum. At all times a sturdy rhythm section carries the tune, whether it be the shuffling hats of 'Midnight Hours' or the shimmering jack of 'No Turning Back', but the real prize here is the seductive mood Smith weaves throughout all 11 tracks. Looped up and hypnotic, but with each piece telling its own unique story, this is a masterclass in deepest house music.

Percussion Maddness: Part Two
Percussion Maddness: Part Two (double 7") (1 per customer)
Cat: VR 197. Rel: 07 Oct 20
  1. Acid (3:47)
  2. EOL Intro (Clap Your Hands) (3:39)
  3. Son Montuno (3:40)
  4. Four Beat Mambo (3:22)
Review: Earlier this month Louie Vega reissued his 2006 full-length collaboration with Luisito Quintero, a veteran percussionist who has long been part of New York's vibrant Latin fusion scene. Here he delivers 'Part Two' of the same project, a shorter but no less essential collection of percussion-rich Latin dance music gems. Opener 'Acid' is a high-quality traditional salsa gem, while 'Four Beat Mambo' does exactly what it says on the tin, with a killer double bassline rising and falling beneath Quintero's killer percussion. 'Son Montuno' adds a little deep jazz-funk flavour to the percussionist's infectious rhythms, while 'EOL Intro (Clap Your Hands)' is an up-tempo fusion of deep house and salsa that has long been a staple in the sets of Vega's Elements of Life band.

Review: Steve O'Sullivan's work as Bluetrain ranks amongst the finest distillations of sleek techno minimalism and spatial dubwise sonics. As part of Sushitech's 15th anniversary celebrations, they're doing us all a massive favour by revisiting their comprehensive compilation of the finest Bluetrain joints, replete with a tasty coloured vinyl pressing this time around. The tracks are beyond sublime, riding steadfast, understated grooves, which underpin beautifully sculpted, metallic chord clusters that sink in easy but run deep. If you need a dependable clutch of stellar dub-tech-house workouts to suit full-immersion DJ sets, this essential double pack will keep you trucking long into the morning.

Review: There's not a lot of info about Scott Gailey Spring's first album as Hotspring, though Mood Hut's description of it being, 'digital technology half buried in the soil', is rather good. Throughout, Gailey employs a brilliantly inventive, off-kilter mixture of tipsy, off-kilter drumbeats, distant auto-tuned vocalizations, manipulated new age music sounds, pulsing ambient chords, fluttering electronic motifs and knowing nods to future R&B. It's extremely hard to accurately describe, but both brilliantly beautiful and undeniably eccentric: the kind of album that will have you scratching your head and smiling enthusiastically at the same time. If you don't believe us, we'd suggest checking out the clips ASAP.

Review: Groove Armada are not the first big electronic act to serve up an album of dance floor focussed sounds in a time when none of us can actually get to a dance floor. Disclosure did it earlier in the year, and just like that duo, this veteran outfit still make it work. As you would expect there are plenty of suer sooth tunes here with catchy vocals and glossy synths and even a little guest appearance from Sophie Ellis-Bexter. The whole thing is fun, playful, and doesn't take itself too seriously, which is certainly what we can all do with right now.

Review: Between 2000 and 2002, Roman Flugel's Tracks on Delivery EP series helped usher in a new era of minimal techno - one built on little more than hypnotic drum machine rhythms and druggy electronic noises. This essential triple-album tells the story of the series, offering up remastered versions of all 15 tracks included on the four 12" singles to date. As you'd expect, it's mostly a collection of surging, stripped-back and mind-mangling techno cuts, but there are also some decent deviations into crunchy club electro and fuller-sounding peak-time workouts. This edition also boasts two previously unreleased tracks recorded during the same period: the super-trippy 'Pattern 16' and the Andrew Weatherall/Blood Sugar-influenced 'Pattern 17'.

Review: Four seriously heavyweight cuts on this one, a various artists classic in the making from Pi Gao Movement. Lost Trax gets down and dingy with 'The Disruptor', a gurgling, menacing mid tempo cut with dystopian feels. Ultradyne's contribution is much more forward facing, with superb drum programming making for a frictionless broken beat groove that is run through with lithe synths. The machines cut loose on manic head wrecker 'Ultradyne' and last of all, 'Deconstructing The Immortals' sounds like the sort of tech Kraftwerk might make if they were now globe trotting DJs.

  8. Taking Care Of Business (album cut) (3:51)
  9. MoStLy GhOsTlY (3:14)
  10. Viktor's Meditation (5:22)
Review: Deep house stalwart Glenn Astro returns with a deeply personal collection of tracks, once again for Copenhagen's Tartelet Records. Of Homespun, Astro has stated that he deliberately deviated down a different sonic path for his sophomore album, with no vintage sounds, references or samples, opting instead for "futuristic sound design and song structures." The album was produced in less than three months, and while it's quite the departure from the dusty lo-fi house sounds he helped popularise a few years back, it is undoubtedly an impressive evolution of his sound. Highlights were the low slung urban soul of the title track (featuring the lovely vocals of Ajnascent), the foggy IDM stylings of 'Mezzanine' (feat Mirek) to the dismantled electro of 'Slow Poke Flagne' and the blunted offworld beats of 'MoStLy GhOsTlY'.

Review: Anane has become one of the most prominent vocalists in contemporary house music. She mixes up a rare skill with a real sense of glamour and diversity that has also lead her to singing the opening song "One Dream" at Super Bowl XLI with Louie Vega & their group Elements Of Life. Her deep afro house sound has grown ever more essential over the last 17 years and now this album transcends through her evolution of the artist and woman she is today. The double 12" features remixes from Louie Vega, Sebastien Grand, Alex Finkin and many more, which makes it a varied and vital affair.

Review: Since breaking through a decade ago, Pierre Daniel AKA Pit Spector has spent much of his time collaborating with others, as a quick glance at his bulging discography will confirm. Because of this, it seems rather fitting that the Parisian producer's second full-length (his first dropped a decade ago) is full to bursting with tracks that were either co-produced with others, or feature guest vocalists. It's a move that guarantees plenty of musical diversity, with Daniel's glitchy, tech-house grooves variously being fused with elements of swing-time jazz (San Proper and Dandy Jack hook-up 'Sympatico'), deep acid ('Layback', with Tin Man), hip-house (Dave-Aju-sporting number 'Love Love'), bass-heavy tech-funk ('Prospectin', featuring The Mole) and hazy, jazz-flecked deep house (Goodwill, where Uncanny Valley's Cuthead lends a hand).

Review: With all the unfortunate hassles that label boss Denis Kaznacheev is enduring of late, we're happy to see that he is still getting on with the job of running Nervmusic. Its next release comes from St Petersburg's tech house hero Andrew Guyvoronsky aka Tripmastaz, and it's also the accomplished producer's debut full-length. Andrewsheeny Skazkif features all the functional and swing-fuelled flavour that you've come to know and love from the Plant 74 chief: from the hypnotic and ethereal bounce of 'No Grind - No Fish To Find', or the trippy Sunday morning microhouse of 'Ditch A Broad Of A Wain, Minimise A Horse's Pain', through to the slick boompty business of 'Even Vinegar Tastes Sweet If It's Free' and the evocative deep house groove of "Fisherman Sees Another Fisherman From A Distance".

Review: Swiss trio Trinidad appear to have spent much of the last year dreaming of the sparkling white beaches, sweltering heat, cooling sea breezes and tropical fauna of the Caribbean. At least that's what we got from the delightfully summery and colourful vibes of Palm Trees & Thirty Degrees, their self-released debut album. It sees them offer up a wealth of warming, colourful and melodious deep house and tech-house grooves, onto which they've added a mixture of French Caribbean instrumentation, steel pan sounds, occasional nods to reggae, atmospheric field recordings and plenty of trippy late-night electronics. It's an ear-pleasing musical blend that we'd recommend investigating further.
