Nuits Sonores (limited 12" reeditado)
Cat: EGLO 041. Rel: 08 Jul 20
  1. Nuits Sonores (11:57)
  2. Nectarines (6:21)
Review: Sam Shepherd has long been a master of the kind of ultra-deep, rolling, soft focus deep house that raises the spirits and soothes the soul. Even so, there's something incredibly special about "Nuits Sonores", the lead track from this must-have EP. Based around a deep, tactile groove and blessed with rising synth solos, dancing acid lines and his usual fireside Rhodes antics, the track rises magnificently for 12 spellbinding minutes. As it progresses, further elements make their way into the mix, until it reaches the kind of organic deep house climax that makes even the grumpiest souls go weak at the knees. Flip for "Nectarines", the kind of loose-limbed fusion of deep house sassiness, Detroit techno electronics and fluid jazz drumming at which Shepherd has always excelled.

Raw 3 EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: COJ V003. Rel: 13 Jul 20
  1. Memories
  2. All I Think About
  3. Pressure Sound
  4. Bug-A-Do
Review: Club Of Jacks is back at it once again, bringing some serious garage house heat to the table for those who want soul and bump in equal measure in their upfront club tracks. "Memories" is a bittersweet jam with lingering chords and wistful vocal licks swirling around a strident swung beat, but hold tight for the uplifting piano riff. "All I Think About" is a more melancholy twist on a similar formula, while "Pressure Sound" takes things in a decidedly bouncier direction. "Bug-A-Do" is a big room bumper to hit the spot when the night gets lively, using some choice chord stabs to bring the action while the beat keeps jacking in the background.

Pimp Life EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ES 001. Rel: 06 Jul 20
  1. Late Night Cruising (5:59)
  2. Just A Man (6:24)
  3. Bring It Home (5:24)
  4. Chicago Lights (5:28)
Review: Soul Central responsible for the anthemic house version of 'Strings of Life' needs no introduction. Their latest Pimp Life EP is a limited edition four-track vinyl that fluidly introduces the Electric Shrine imprint. The EP features a mix of gritty, jazzy, soulful and funk-filled cuts that are interplayed with raw interviews from behind bars. Soul Central keeps it deep and sleazy whilst delivering the real deal. 'Late Night Cruising' chronicles the journey of a Bluesman, departing with the funkiest of grooves and solid sub-bass becoming the final destination.
'Just A Man' embeds the confessions from a convicted pimp dispersed with classic keys and dripped in Soul. Turning in a modern take on the deeper side of Disco. 'Bring It Home' is haze fuelled & reminiscent of the early US House scene. 'Chicago Lights' fuses 4/4, low slung Funk driven by a deeper dub vehicle.

Take It Easy 003 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: TIE 003. Rel: 13 Jul 20
  1. Dirty Channels - "Guava Juice"
  2. DJLMP - "Track 3994"
  3. Memoryman Aka Uovo - "I Wonder"
  4. Bugsy - "Pomiri Dan"
Review: Take It Easy are a Milan-based crew who love nothing better than the sweet fusion between classic disco sounds and upfront house music energy. Dirty Channels capture that spirit perfectly on this third release on the label, opening up this split 12" with the crisp and strutting "Guava Juice". DJLMP takes things in a more psychedelic, tripped out direction for the more adventurous groove hounds before longstanding champion Memoryman Aka Uovo gets dusty and woozy with "I Wonder". Bugsy completes the set with the feisty stomp and sizzling tension of "Pomiri Dan".

808 (Magnus Asberg/TIJN mix) (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: RR 003. Rel: 13 Jul 20
  1. 808 (9:19)
  2. 808 (Magnus Asberg remix) (7:11)
  3. 808 (TIJN remix) (7:11)
Review: Ted Amber first surfaced with an impressive 12" on minimal lynchpin Botanic Minds back in 2018. Now he's back on Romana with a new joint that maintains a seductively deep mood throughout, but still knows how to jack where it counts. The undulating synth tones of "808" get carried through to Magnus Asberg's ranging, steady building remix, while TIJN creates a delicate and detailed tapestry out of the ingredients to complete the set. For classy and consistent variations on a warm, mellow house theme, look no further than this deeply satisfying drop from the Romana crew.

Jack's Tracks VA Vol 4 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: JKH 016. Rel: 13 Jul 20
  1. Carlo Gambino - "She Can't Love You"
  2. Lee Onel - "Pepon"
  3. Julenn - "Long Shot"
  4. Legit Trip - "Brat"
Review: 4 fresh tracks from 4 great producers. First is Carl Gambino (She Can't Love You), test driven at DC10 and parties like S.A.S.H. in Australia. A beautiful House track full of warmth, swing & groove with subtle vocals throughout. A2 on the A side is Lee Onel from Fuerteventura with Pepon, driven by its baseline, skippy percussion and in true Lee Onel style, a long breakdown arranged perfectly to jump start the crowd. With heavy early support on Ibiza Global Radio and the islands dance floors, its more than made its mark. B1 The label welcomes back Julenn with Long Shot. Another great slice of House music led by its strong kick, light hats and dirty baseline. B2 The unstoppable Russian, Legit Trip is back on the label with Brat, a pure groove leading into a straight up breakdown before catching the groove again right to the end.

New Dance (12" reeditado) (1 per customer)
Cat: RHSTOREJAMS 012. Rel: 14 Jul 20
  1. New Dance (6:59)
  2. Cycles (6:23)
Review: Good news for all of those who don't shop in Rush Hour's Amsterdam store, as Masalo's much-hyped debut solo single is finally available outside of that legendary Dutch institution. It's certainly been worth the wait. Both tracks doff a cap towards the spacey and intergalactic end of the Italo-disco spectrum, with Masalo opting for unfussy drum machine rhythms and throbbing, arpeggio style basslines. A-side "New Dance" is the more obviously disco-centric of the two tracks, with jaunty riffs, lilting synth-pop melodies and ricocheting, proto-house style drum fills rising above a suitably druggy groove. "Cycles", meanwhile, is a little deeper and more outer space in tone, an effect emphasized via sampled vocal chants and crystalline synthesizer melodies that appear to drift across the sound space.

Kalamazoo EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SM 038. Rel: 29 Jun 20
  1. Kalamazoo (4:42)
  2. Not The Dx100 (4:57)
  3. Halfway (5:57)
  4. Just Let Me Go (5:58)
Review: Donnell Knox and Mark Hawkins, better known as D-Knox and Marquis Hawkes respectfully, team up for a collaborative EP on Sonic Mind that speaks to their respective roots in underground techno reaching back to the 90s. "Kalamazoo" is a tough and clattering jacker with out-of-phase organ lines to send your mind spinning, while "Not The DX100" brings things front and centre for a comparatively direct, acidic workout. "Halfway" ramps up the melodic content as a displaced vocal celebrates Kalamazoo's location between Chicago and Detroit, and then "Just Let Me Go" completes the set with a tough and bumping vocal house cut.

H3misphere (feat SIT remix) (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: AHH 11.11. Rel: 29 Jun 20
  1. H3misphere (7:37)
  2. Wergles (6:39)
  3. H3misphere (Sit remix) (8:32)
Review: Canadian maestro Jay Tripwire is a long time underground stalwart with countless gold-dust releases to his name, and still the modest artist keeps pushing on with more stellar tech house immersion heaters. Here he's been invited to Euphoria for an EP that burrows into the most shadowy corners of his sound. "H3misphere" is a spooky jam driven by a shuffling groove and offset with some dubby flourishes - a perfectly balanced workout for the club with a seductive air of mystery lingering around the rhythm section. "Werqles" is a lighter affair, but it's no slouch in the freaky department as a plethora of disembodied machine wriggles ping around the crisp 4/4 throwdown. The whole B-side is given over to SIT's "Remux" of "H3misphere", which holds the groove down in a more linear manner but keeps that chilling atmosphere intact just behind the beats.

AESTHETIC 09 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: AESTHETIC 09. Rel: 15 Jun 20
  1. Waves (7:56)
  2. CC (7:25)
  3. Sundayyzz (7:48)
Review: Since 2013 Tijn (not to be confused with J. Tijn) has been issuing a steady stream of high grade minimal and tech house for labels like Decay, Memoria, Moss Co and more recently Vuew. Now he comes to Aesthetic for a varied EP that leads in with the dusky, blue-hued tones of "Waves" - a moment for true immersion and introspection. By way of contrast, "CC" captures the energy of classic mid 00s minimal a la labels like Cynosure - all bugging samples hopping around a swinging groove - and we can't get enough of it. "Sundayyzz" takes things in a spookier direction, keeping that stripped back shuffle but holding down a more mellow energy compared to "CC".

Cat: OUIE 017. Rel: 01 Jul 20

  2. Together (7:48)
  3. Inhale (5:54)
Review: Berlin scene stalwart Nico Stojan is back on his respected Ouie imprint that he co-runs with Acid Pauli, with their seventeenth edition here. On the 'Cardano' EP you can sure bet that it is jam packed with glassy-eyed and bittersweet dancefloor narratives, as evident on the sublime title A side title track. Soothing melodies, warm bass and subtle rhythms underpin this melodic deep house journey throughout. On the flip, we have two more numbers aimed squarely at the Sunday morning dancefloor in the form of "Together" and "Inhale", the latter in particular will take you into the exotic with its chilled-out summertime island vibes.

Cat: MEANDER 029. Rel: 10 Jul 20
  1. Can't Dance (7:25)
  2. Sonsuz Seconds (7:13)
  3. Kelime Bir (7:09)
  4. Kelime Iki (7:03)
Review: Those stylish minimalists at Meander are back with more of their superbly stripped down sounds. At the helm for this latest trip is Alci, who brings the clipped electronic funk to his opener "Can't Dance" which will surely have many people trying to prove they don't suffer from the same issue. "Sonsuz Seconds" is more airy and deft, with incidental chords floating above a rugged drum line that is nice and rickety. "Kelime Bir" gets into melon twisting late night territory with its bendy tones and freaky pads, then "Kelime Iki" almost falls over itself its drums areas quick and kinetic. Fantastic stuff once more from this label.

Knights Are Cold EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: IMO 014. Rel: 06 Jul 20
  1. Knights Are Cold
  2. Be Side Me
Review: Ilija Rudman and Antonio Zuza's consistently classy label is back with a standout 12" from Californian producer Michoacan, who's previously been spotted on DFA, Eskimo and many other highly regarded labels. "Knights Are Cold" is a vibrant, original and delightfully kinked slab of sunshine with a subtle pitch-bent oddness and an innate funkiness. It's smart in its reference points, but certainly not trying to be a simple 80s disco pastiche. "Be Side Me" is a slower, moodier affair but the same melodic sensibilities shine through to make this a rich selection for DJs wanting grooves with personality and attitude to spare.

Review: After some great releases previously by locals such as Martyne, Bodin and adopted homeboy Rob Amboule, Frankfurt's Gosu are back with this terrific two tracker by two out-of-towners. On the A side we have Dom Ahoutam that is one half of Invisible Menders (with Jane Fitz) who serves up the interstellar bleep techno fantasy of "Snake Dance", while on the flip Irishman Darren Allen (Underlying Form) is in top form as always and going deep into the afterhours with the old school minimal funk of "The Odd Man".

Review: Having recently revived his Utopia Project alias for a surprise new 12" on Running Back, legendary New York deep house producer Rheji Burrell returns to Gerd Janson's label with an EP credited to another one of his Nu Groove era pseudonyms, NY Housin' Authority. "Out Of Body Experience" boasts seven tracks, all of which explore similar sonic pastures to the project's classic, late '80s/early '90s material. That means tactile synthesizer basslines, ear-catching melodies, classic house synth sounds and drum machine beats rich in Burrell's usual infectious swing. Highlights include the breezy and life-affirming jazziness of "3rd Time", the bass-heavy, intergalactic thump of "5th Time" (a cut that would neatly fit into Bleep techno-influenced sets) and the summery warmth of "2nd Time".

Review: Graded, Regraded and now Intergraded? Label chief Midland has stated that it is a new label intended to focus on releasing music by new artists; whether unknown, emerging or established but working under different aliases. For the sixth release, we have Em and Stav. Well established in the vanguard of Bristol and beyond's electronic music scene, both individually in their own right and as a duo, they are partners in real life and behind the decks. Great stuff on this one: from the hypnotic and bass-driven broken beat of "Afterglow", to the soulful futurist electro of "Inner Space" and the emotive off-kilter IDM of B-side cut "Atmospheric Love" - this is a terrific effort from the promising pair.

Review: It would be fair to say that Mr Fingers 2016 is something of an event release, at least for those who love deep house. While Larry Heard has kept busy - largely with remixes and reissues - this marks the first 12" release under his most famous moniker for over a decade. He begins in contemplative mood, fusing tumbling music box melodies, creepy electronics and nagging 303 lines on "Outar Acid", before laying down some typically blissful, atmospheric deep house on the wondrous "Qwazars". Flip for "Nodyahead", an effortless mixture of heavy dub-house bottom end, African-influenced percussion and moody late night refrains, and the ultra-deep, piano-laden bliss of "Aether".

  1. Are We Here (5:59)
  2. Higher (5:59)
Review: Nobody does tough rolling tackle for the peak time quite like the Audiojack boys. The Leeds-based duo head up the revered Gruuv imprint and have left their indelible mark on The White Isle with their legendary parties. Indeed, their sound is a worthy addition to the Mannheim-based 8bit imprint; Jorge and Nick Curly, like Rial & Birkenshaw themselves, churn out proper tech house that is aimed squarely at the main room. The track in question is "Are We Here", that sees them deliver something a bit more restrained than usual. This is a smooth and euphoric slow burner that's perfect to build up to the bangers in your set, harnessing all that 'energy'. Speaking of which, that's the operative word throughout the B side cut "Higher" with its deep and bass-driven pulsation that's sure to get the sweat dripping from the walls.

  2. Carlo - "The Swindler" (6:32)
  3. Hotmood - "Magical Flight" (5:57)
  4. Rees - "The Way You Move" (6:04)
Review: We may not be able to gather to dance outdoors under a blazing sun or a blanket of stars, but there's no harm in a little musical daydreaming. That's what the latest multi-artist Ravenelli Disco Club release is all about: summery escapism that comes with a big dollop of rush-inducing disco release. Ethyene sets the tone with the colourful boogie-house fusion of "Let Love" - all twinkling synth motifs, echoing percussion hits, thickset grooves and hazy vocal samples - before Carlo raises the temperature via some jazzy deep house heaviness in the vein of Derrick Carter's "boompty" era. Over on side B, Hotmood's "Magical Flight" is a surging, string-drenched disco-house roller, while Rees' "The Way You Mood" is a tooled-up take on what sounds like a classic Philadelphia International cut.

  2. Please Don't Make It Funky (The Patchouli Brothers Re edit) (5:05)
Review: "Please Don't Make It Funky" is one of those delicious curiosities that dusty-fingered crate diggers unearth every now and then. Recorded and released in limited qualities in 1980, it was apparently an attempt by Frank Pisani, then a veteran American singer who had last tasted success in the rock and roll era, to capture the disco/jazz-funk zeitgeist. While it was a commercial flop, the track is undeniably attractive and fun, with squelchy synth sounds, ear-catching horns, fluid piano solos and Pisani's blue-eyed-soul vocals rising above a tidy groove. This surprise - but most welcome - reissue backs Pisani's cheery original with a fresh re-edit by the Patchouli Brothers. This includes some filter trickery and a DJ-friendly arrangement, but otherwise sticks close to the original mix.

The mysterious producer, who we assume to be a fellow named Andrew, presents two bouncy minimal tech house grooves here that are guaranteed to work the dancefloor. A-side cut "God Seducing Me" is exactly the kind of mesmerising and bass-driven tackle that will mix well with Northern tech house sounds by Jack Wickham or Josh Walker, while on the flip "Devil Catch Me Tonight" will hypnotise you into submission with its ethereal charm and is perfect for the afterhours dancefloor.

Review: Viktor Talking Machine are back on Monaberry, only this time their limber, discofied house music is getting the remix treatment from two choice operators. "Joko" is up first, getting a buoyant seeing-to by Andhim who injects the track with all kinds of nerve-jangling excitement. There are MIDI brass stabs, lush pads and a percussive workout to get people working the floor with all their might. "Line" gets a more tender touch from Till Von Sein, whose playful approach is imbued with sunshine and good vibes while sporting a little Balearic slouch in its easy tempo and airy atmosphere.
