  1. Patrice Baumel - "Roar" (Adana Twins remix) (8:16)
  2. Adana Twins - "Aufstand Der Massen" (7:18)
Review: Originally released back in 2009, Amsterdam scene stalwart Patrice Baumel's anthem "Roar" now gets a - pardon the pun - roaring main room rework (featuring one massive drop!) by Hamburg's favourite sons Adana Twins - hot off their latest Watergate Mix. This is the first EP stemming from the mix itself, and could easily be the standout track off the compilation. On the flip is the adrenalised and mesmerising dancefloor drama of "Aufstand Der Massen" which has already been in constant rotation with heavy hitters like Solomun and Tale Of Us.

  1. Rush (6:40)
  2. Get Up (6:42)
  3. Night River (5:29)
  4. Things I Said (7:23)
Review: Having dropped some choice digi-only releases on Robsoul and Cross Section, rising British producer Jade Cox makes her first appearance on wax via Nail's 89:Ghost label, and she's making quite the statement of intent with these no-nonsense club workouts. There's a loopy, tracky feel to "Rush" that perfectly captures the energy of a killer peak time set, while "Get Up" takes a looser, funkier approach that should sit comfortably in all manner of warm up scenarios. "Night River" is a chugging, upbeat and soulful jam indebted to the unmistakable warmth of Detroit house, and "Things I Said" brings things full circle with a stripped back, percussive groover for DJs to get fresh with.

  1. Tickle Me Pink (6:22)
  2. Birds Fly Dry (5:52)
  3. Grabbing The Golden Goose (5:16)
Review: Following up a terrific inauguration of Nick Hoppner's new Touch From A Distance imprint in addition to releases on Me Me Me and Scissor & Thread, Desert Sound Colony returns to his Holding Hands imprint for another collection of oddball grooves. This follows up a great one on the label not long ago by Adam Pits. The A side features the tripped-out minimal tech house of "Tickle Me Pink" calling to mind the emerging sounds of mid-noughties minimal - in a good way! On the flip, beeping and glitching reductionist funk continues with the quirky "Birds Fly Dry" followed by "Grabbing The Golden Goose" tunneling and claustrophobic journey down the vortex which closes the EP in interesting fashion.

Needs 005 (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: NNFP 005. Rel: 12 Nov 18
  1. DJ Normal 4 - "Return Of The Hooligans" (9:55)
  2. Red Axes - "Treacksheni" (6:23)
  3. Hodge - "Signal" (5:38)
Review: Needs is back with its fifth installment of charity-raising goodness from some seriously quality producers. This time the gauntlet is thrown down by the increasingly prolific DJ Normal 4, who wields some of his signature breakbeats over a cheeky synth that nods to Da Hool for a dark and deadly roller. Israeli duo Red Axes pop up fresh from outings on !K7 and Phantasy Sound for the worldly percussion and mystical atmosphere of "Treacksheni" before Bristol bass-wielding techno titan Hodge finishes the package off with the stunning, dramatic undulations of "Signal," making this a collection of tracks that all feed into the same vein of rhythmically adventurous, moody club music.

  3. Silverlight (feat Jinadu - Ian Pooley remix) (6:41)
  4. Wherever You Go (Lauer akai mix) (6:29)
Review: Fred Everything's Lazy Days label rounds out a strong 2018 with this remix package focused on some of Everything's recent productions. On the A side, his collaboration with singer Sio gets the remix treatment from Andre Lodemann and Fabian Dikof before Everything himself comes back to revisit the track with an alternative spin. While each having their own distinct stamps on how to work "By Day," both versions chime with the kind of uplifting, melodic tech house that Lazy Days is known for. On the B side, "Sliverlight" gets a once over from Ian Pooley, who employs a subby bass and tense, sustained string notes to create a captivating atmosphere, then Lauer rounds the record out with a bright and breezy 90s-rave-flavoured "Akai Mix" of "Wherever You Go."

  1. Hyperion (5:56)
  2. Frame Of Mind (6:05)
  3. Love Without Sound (8:22)
  4. Funky Finger (7:48)
Review: Last year, 4Lux man Gerd reissued "Afterglow", a record he made in 1992 while part of obscure Dutch trio It's Thinking. "Hyperion" was the 1994 follow-up to that inspired EP, so it makes perfect sense that he's giving it a new airing, too. It's aged rather well, with superb title track "Hyperion" delivering a deliciously warm and loved-up blend of colourful electronics, dream house chords, rich bass and house-tempo breakbeats. The sparkling "Frame of Mind" sounds like "Chime" and "Belfast"-era Orbital after a night on medical grade happy pills, while "Love Without Sound" peppers a positive techno groove with all manner of shimmering synth sounds. "Funky Finger", meanwhile, is an awesome chunk of saucer-eyed ambient techno bliss.

  5. Pacific Bureau - "Turn Me On" (4:41)
Review: Axe On Wax sublabel PNP cuts to the chase once again with another limited five tracker from an exciting range of names. Rising London talent Tom Jay takes the lead with a brazen slab of funky house that chugs with a generous helping of Chicago flair. He's in good company; the bossman Fede Lng with a silky street soul piece that hits with a smidgeon of new jack sass, Hank Youngman simplifies his name and groove with beautiful filtered samba savoire faire before Pacific Bureau rounds it off, pressing the big red button named 80s soul. Recommended!

NCSS 002 (12" reeditado)
Cat: NCSS 002RE. Rel: 16 Nov 18
  1. Jhobei - "Do Milk" (6:23)
  2. Casey Spillman - "Simply Focus" (6:37)
  3. Jhobei - "Club Beige" (6:57)
  4. Ben Balance - "Funk Tower" (7:35)
Review: Itchy tech house label NCSS returns with a trio of new artists all weaving their way into the top charts, and if the material is sounding this good then we're pretty sure we'll be hearing a lot more from them soon! Newcomer Jhobei rolls through with "Do Milk", a creamy, synth-heavy house killer with a slap-up bass, followed by Casey Spillman's "Simply Focus", a freaky tech roller with all sorts of minimal nuances going off in its mix. On the flip, Jhobei returns with "Club Beige", an aqueous roller that sounds a little like the Cab Drivers, while Ben Balance's "Funk Tower" unleashes a dark, muddy bassline interlocked with subtle bursts of sc-fi goodness.

  3. Oceans Of My Mind (Suraj club mix) (6:03)
  4. Oceans Of My Mind (Simina Grigoriu & Moe Danger) (7:19)
Review: House Music With Love makes a welcome return to the fray with a fresh new 12" from Kaldera and Lazarusman, who team up to present the swirling, thought-provoking "Oceans Of My Mind." Between Kaldera's brooding production and Lazarusman's off-centre poetry, it's the kind of track that will suit a lot of different environments and always stand out. As well as the original, there's a strong run of remixes on offer here, from Urmet K's softer, smoother deep house approach to SURAJ's infectiously funky version, wrapping up with the more epic peak time thrust of Simina Grigoriu & Moe Danger's take on the distinctive source material.

  2. Neutron Dance (Fango remix) (7:08)
  3. Neutron Dance (Mano Le Tough vocal mix) (6:55)
  4. Neutron Dance (Gerd Janson Birkenstock remix) (6:48)
Review: If you've danced at house-focused clubs and festivals this year, there's a strong chance that you've strut your stuff plenty of times to Krystal Klear's "Neutron Dance". The hooky, riff-heavy original version isn't included on this remix package, but happily the assembled reworks are all killers in their own right. We're particularly enjoying the squeezable synth bass, punchy machine drums and fluid piano solos that catch the ear on Paul Woolford's ace "Jolly Roger Version", not to mention the sweaty breakbeats, restless drum machine cowbells and thrusting New York freestyle bass underpinning Fango's fantastic take. Elsewhere, Gerd Janson straps on his "Birkies" and re-imagines the cut as a retro-futurist house treat while Mano Le Tough doffs a cap towards Italo-disco and throbbing big room house.

  1. Lover Chanting (5:28)
  2. In My House (5:53)
  3. Timothy (3:49)
Review: After a brief dalliance with Because Music, Little Dragon signed to Ninja Tune earlier in the year. "Lover Chanting" is the popular combo's first EP for Coldcut's venerable imprint, following a single-track hook up with BADBADNOTGOOD earlier in the year. Title track "Lover Chanting" is a killer chunk of reggae-tinged synth-pop/disco-pop fusion, with singer Yukimi Nagano providing a strong, ear-catching vocal that will lodge itself in your consciousness and stay there for weeks. Elsewhere, "In My House" is a sultry, off-kilter trip into heavily electronic deep house territory - albeit with some suitably Balearic flourishes and a pop-tinged vocal - while "Timothy" is a whistling voyage through wonky '80s soul/R&B pastures.

Review: Since launching the Modified Man project in 2016, Adam Scrimshire and Dave Koor have yet to put a foot wrong. The genius of their collaborative releases is their ability to combine loose-limbed instrumental improvisations with dusty samples, cleverly manipulated beats and an acute sense of atmosphere. This third volume in the series rolls along in a similar way, flitting between skewed, straight-to-tape boogie-house ("Blame's On You Bruv"), solo-laden deep house dreaminess ("Glass Army"), intergalactic jazz-funk/broken beat fusion ("Here Me Calling"), smooth and loved-up grooves (the amusingly titled "Sergio Arpeggio") and becalmed, ultra-deep downtempo beats ("Love Rising From The Dark Abyss of Sorrow").

Review: Timisoara's favorite sons NTFO return, following up some great releases on Objektivity, Djebali and their own Sintope Series. The Approach EP comes courtesy of French imprint Organic Music and features four surefire tech house grooves that are made to play. From the funky and rolling "Approach" which also receives a terrific rework by Berlin's Diego Krause, taking it into back room dub territory. On the flip, the sound is distinctly Romanian on the driving and hypnotic tool tech-house of "CC" which you'd expect to hear at a homegrown festival like Sunwaves or Mioritmic - just sublime!

Review: First making his name in the mid-noughties minimal boom, Berlin based DJ/producer Onur Ozer became a staple of local imprint Vakant and even went on to mix the very first installment of local superclub Watergate's mix series. Fast forward to now, Ozer's style has changed considerably, and his new Akmar EP inaugurates the Denial imprint. It sees the Turkish producer serve up a much more underground vibe, with the retro techno and sci-fi electro sounds similarly explored on releases for Treatment and Time Passages in recent years all evident on this bold EP.

The now Berlin based producer serves up dreamy and mesmerizing lo-fi house on the splendid Idlehour EP, as heard on terrific jams such as the wonderful opener "Club Fever" while the zeitgeist of early '90s IDM is captured stylishly on the mysterious "Broken Bell" as well as on the dreamy, ambient house "Lolli".

  1. Do What You Gotta Do (feat Mandel Turner) (7:28)
  2. The Deep (6:49)
Review: Veteran of the Parisian scene Franck Roger is back at it on his Home Invasion imprint, delivering some bold and stylistic house music. On the A side of the label's 20th release we've got the tough and rolling Windy City influence of "Do What You Gotta Do" (feat Mandel Turner) with its infectious vocal hooks and hands in the air stabs - that the label best described themselves as reminscinent of old Prescription Records or Derrick Carter. On the flip, Roger goes deep with the sexy, emotive and fittingly titled "The Deep" bringing you back to the good old days of the French deep house scene which was run back in the day by DJ Deep, Julien Jabre and Playin' 4 the City.
