Make You Whole
Cat: COLLEIS 004. Rel: 10 May 22
  1. Make You Whole (Dusky remix) (6:03)
  2. Make You Whole (Coco Bryce remix) (6:32)
  3. Make You Whole (7:57)
  4. Make You Whole (Smokin Jo dub) (5:49)
Review: bBreakbeats have been back in fashion for a hot minute now. They are reliable vehicles for many things - all out high energy raving or piano laced uplifting joy. We get a bit of all of that more on this new selection of remixes of Andonicus's 'Make You Whole' tune. Dusky go first with a feel good and euphoric sound that is old school in mood but new school in execution. Coco Bryce then deploys some of his masterful jungle breaks for a high energy trip and after a remaster of the big and bouncy original version comes a Smokin Jo dub that is pure fire.

Cat: STPV 011. Rel: 10 May 22
  1. Vlad Arapasu - "Cosmic Book" (8:09)
  2. Alich & Simo - "Ahlia" (7:41)
  3. Lulla - "99 Year Old Port" (7:40)
  4. Petit Batou - "Tadam Tadam" (7:51)
Review: We've become relentless pushers of (albeit, only the best) minimal and tech house as of late, and of this batch, French label Stamp Records almost certainly head up the microgenre, microhouse. Welcoming four funky affiliates with a flair for fleeting feels, every track here is a beautiful vignette. In the future, when we have flying cars, Alich & Simo's 'Ahlia' might function as a fittingly dreamy and esoteric soundtrack for late cosmic nightrides. Meanwhile, Lulla's '99 Year Old Port' works better for scouring underwater sewage systems and future undersea tunnels. Sample-heavy, light and flighty.

  1. Pillow Stories (7:38)
  2. Gdziekolwiek (5:17)
  3. Onomatopeja Slimacza (7:41)
  4. By The Hand (4:26)
Review: Given his love of dub disco, dusty samples, skewed house and all things cosmic, Das Komplex (real name Marcin Lukaszewicz) seems like an appropriate signing to Prins Thomas and Kai Fraeger's Internasjonal label. Predictably, the Polish producer has dutifully delivered an excellent EP that ticks all of these boxes. For proof, check the cowbell-sporting, bass guitar-heavy, piano stab-showcasing dub disco chug of 'Pillow Stories', the effects-laden, edits-not-edit early morning disco fun of 'Onomatopeaja Slimacza' and the pitched-down brilliance of 'By The Hand', a breathlessly heavy, percussion-rich slab of Afro-disco/dub disco fusion that makes great use of sneaky samples from an original disco-era favourite.

The Colour Series I
The Colour Series I (hand-stamped translucent red vinyl 10")
Cat: REPEAT 04X. Rel: 10 May 22
  1. Make Me (5:59)
  2. Missing Time (6:53)
Review: Two unreleased tracks by Englishman Richard Davis on his Repeat imprint. On the A side, you've got the sensual, late night mood music of "Make Me" delivered in his idiosyncratic style that's been heard on imprints such as 240 Volts, Moodmusic and Noir over the years. Over on the flip, there's the deep, afterhours-minded dub of 'Missing Time' which sounds like it could possibly be from the early noughties with its minimal sound. Also known as Dennis Kensington, the Berlin-based producer reissued some of his much sought after 12"s under the Junkie Satre alias on Repeat last year.

Tiger's Eye
  1. Tiger's Eye (11:38)
  2. Orgonite (6:00)
  3. Orgonite (Riding The Waves) (6:21)
Review: Berlin's Cocktail d'Amore and Tokyo's Ene Records have come together once again to present the music of Solidair. The duo of Cocktail alumni Luigi Di Venere and Jules Etienne present three tracks aimed to induce a dance floor hypnosis. Orgonite (Riding the Waves) does just that, a slow build awash in the ebb and flow of acid tinges, just enough to wet your whistle on a Saturday night. The original mix keeps the skeletal support but throws in a life preserver of 8 bit gaming synthesis. Frisky arps call and respond to each other before making way for sinewy pads to lift off. Tiger's Eye sets itself onto cruising speed incorporating elements of late 90's acid techno with the sleek and smooth clubbing aesthetics of modern day Berlin.

  1. Rio Deja Vu (De Gama Re-Groove) (7:16)
  2. Rio Deja Vu (8:09)
  3. Cuica Groove (8:47)
Review: Legofunk serves up a 10th does of its futurist and floor funk here with Dirty Elements and Drunk Drivers at the helm. It's a De Gama Re-Groove to kick things off with super smooth house grooves and florid Latin influences over heft kick drums. It's a carnival waiting to happen, frankly. The original is a more stringy and percussive, but the weighty drums still establish a killer groove. Last of all is 'Cuica Groove' which is sunny and has a weird and wonderful vocal floating up top.

Lovin' & Dreamin' (limited 1-sided coloured vinyl 12" (comes in different coloured vinyl, we cannot guarantee which colour you will recieve))
Cat: EDITDUB 13. Rel: 11 May 22
  1. Lovin' (6:19)
  2. I Must Be Dreamin' (6:49)
Review: The people behind Japan's Edit & Dub series are understandably publicity-shy, while their periodic releases tend to appear without much fanfare or fuss. As usual, there's little info about the crew's latest single-sided missive, which has been pressed to a rather lovely slab of marbled purple vinyl. A-side 'Lovin' is a fine re-edit of an unnamed heavy disco stomper - all rubbery bass guitar, sweeping orchestration, twinkling pianos and dewy-eyed female lead vocals. Over on the flip the shadowy scalpel fiends take on Wanda's 1982 boogie classic 'I Must Be Dreamin', doing a terrific job of emphasizing the squelchy synth-bass, Evelyn 'Champagne' King style electronic squiggles (think 'I'm In Love') and razor-sharp disco guitars.

  1. Transport Express (6:45)
  2. Authority (5:48)
  3. Pools (5:20)
Review: New school tech house beatmaker Junes serves up a fourth instalment in his Dote series here. As always this is high functioning, high class club music with a real machine warm and futuristic sense of soul. 'Transport Express' is quick and slick, cruising on a nice deep space vibe, silky kicks and hits and bulbous bass. 'Authority' hits harder, with more punchy technoid drums and tripped out synth motifs. 'Pools' closes down in the most frantic fashion of the lot with blistering synths and hurried double time drum programming.

  1. To Experience Joy (9:18)
  2. Mystical Night (8:17)
  3. Nothing Will Ever Content Him (8:17)
  4. Roses Love Sunlight (8:48)
Review: Ukraine's Intelligent Sound imprint, headed up by much deserved chin-stroker Gals, aims at intelligent and brainy sounds woven between the beaty moulds of techy house and minimal dance. Release numero uno hails from KiRiK, aka. Kirill Kirik, whose music weaves unusual lonesome guitar and acid sounds ('Experience Joy'), midnight house calls and voices in our heads ('Mystical Night'), funking cyberspace clicks ('Nothing Will Ever Content Him') and dusky vocaloid seascapes ('Roses Love Sunlight'). Highly intelligent indeed.

Review: You might have thought Florida breaks were an old-timey thing, but Miami's Sports Records proves otherwise with this. This freshest split 12". 'Sports Vol. 3' hears individual contributions from Liquid Earth, Daisy Boy, Nachtbreaker and Huerta added to the fore, beginning on the scratch-up Mario Kart-esque breaks n' tones of 'Spooky Snorkel' and ending on the b-boy's laser-fire that is 'Seekers'. Limited to 500 copies, you don't want to miss this latest addition, best for fans of Telephones or Kalahari Oyster Cult.

  1. More Action (3:31)
  2. Clouds (3:43)
  3. Dancehall Private Party (2:35)
  4. Strictly Bouncin (2:07)
Review: The inaugural reals on Word To The Wise from Mah'Mood sold out in quick time. It was a super way to kick off the label and now the second EP six or so months later is just as good. It's a deep house exploration from Sebastiao Loopes that opens with a languid groove and some freeform synth work. The energy is pent up and the bass bulbous. The grocers cut from from easy characterisation after that with the downbeat and stonier sounds of 'Clouds' and lurching beat structures of 'Dancehall Private Party' before closer 'Strictly Bouncin' rounds out on a lazy and swaggering groove that slowly lifts you off your feet.

Cat: DE 007. Rel: 11 May 22
  1. Moog Groove (6:04)
  2. Space Disco (6:51)
Review: D&E Chicago was established in 2010 in The Windy City, with an original emphasis on the rare groove and soulful house music scene. Label chief (and Spike Rebel collaborator) Dave Maze takes care of the label's next release here, returning with some serious jams on this limited edition, one-sided release. On the A side you've got the hypnotic disco dub of "Moog Groove" and its unmistakably '90s vibe, followed by the late night boogie-down action of "Space Disco" with some seriously funky '70s flavour.

  1. Kfcdodomu (9:02)
  2. ALCR (7:16)
  3. Eighteen 3W (Kirik edit) (7:48)
Review: The Memory Remains label deals in largely anonymous releases skirting the minimal tech house scene with a subtle tip towards pop music. 'Kfcdodomu', which opens up the thirteenth release on the label, actually calls to mind the seminal club pop tones of Luomo's 'Tessio', although the sound sources are certainly coming from somewhere else. 'Alcr' flips the script wholesale with a sound which seems to nod to Afro beat and high life with a tasteful tech injection. Kirik shows himself for an edit of 'Eighteen 3W' to close the record out in a scintillating display of the emotive power that club music can possess.

Review: Dublin's David Kitt had been producing indie music since the turn of the millenium both solo and in various bands. He debuted under the New Jackson alias back in 2011, when he released The Night Mail EP on the now defunct Pogo Recordings, effectively launching his new career as an electronic music producer. It's since been reissued on fellow Irishman The Drifter's Maeve imprint and now Munich's Permanent Vacation have stepped in to fill the demand. It features all four originals: the deep, woozy title track, in addition to the low-slung disco of "Hussle Free" and the First Choice sampling "It's Not Over".

Review: Pancratio is back on his onetriptoayvon imprint with OTTA4 X Korghettini Electronics. In early 2020, the Italian producer dug out his range of Korg Electribes, put them together and started jamming, recording several tracks without using any other equipment. The result is a bunch of tight and well produced tracks that prove sometimes less is, indeed, more. We were really feeling the Northern bleep energy of #1 and the retro techno euphoria of "#6". While over on the flip, the deep down and dirty acid of #2 has us tripping out too.

  2. Deyayu - "Asthatwhatis" (6:20)
  3. Two Opposites - "Tropical Aurora" (6:30)
  4. Eros - "Phased Energy" (5:27)
Review: It is now more than two years since Planet Tapes launched out of Italy and this is only the label's third release, but the wait is more than worth it. IT is Italian Domenico Rosa who kicks off with a brilliantly lush and melodic house workout that has as much old school influence as it does future soul. Deyayu's 'Asthatwhatis' sinks into a deeper, more late night vibe with strident drums and rolling bass but nice crisp claps and heady ambient synths. There is an irresistible playfulness to Two Opposites's 'Tropical Aurora' that really swells the heart while Eros closes down with 'Phased Energy' which is all glassy and celestial melodies over light breakbeats.

Make The World Go Round (reissue)

  1. Make The World Go Round (Deep Dish vocal mix) (9:23)
  2. Ain't No Need To Hide (Deep Dish Sequel Reedit) (9:40)
Review: For the latest volume in their ongoing series of '90s house reissues, Champion Records has decided to offer-up a pair of classic remixes from Washington D.C duo Deep Dish. They were at the height of their powers when they got to work on Sandy B's 'Make The World Go Round' in early 1996 and their full vocal rework (featured here on side A) still sounds fantastic all these years on. Featuring many of their trademark ticks - think layered, swinging, tribal-influenced percussion, weighty organ bass and cut-up vocal snippets - it's a nine-minute epic that's every bit as good as their similarly celebrated remix of De Lacy's 'Hideaway'. Turn to the flip for a light-touch re-edit of their similarly epic, drum-heavy 1997 'sequel' rework of follow-up single 'Ain't No Need To Hide'.

Illusion (12")
Cat: WOLFEP 063. Rel: 10 May 22
  1. Illusion (Theo SS translation) (9:44)
  2. Illusion (Tone Control mix) (8:10)
Review: It might now be 14 years old, but Tone Control's 'Illusion' - a 21st century deep house classic marked out by crunchy machine drums, booming sub-bass, soft-focus soul vocals and drowsy chords - still gets plenty of club plays. Since the original 12" is now hard to find, WOLF Music has decided to do a reissue, pairing Tone Control's own mix (here featured on side B) with a brand-new "translation" from the legend that is Theo Parrish. The Detroiter's take is naturally something of an epic: a near 10-minute excursion that slowly twists, turns and evolves throughout. It boasts fresh jazz-tinged house beats with that trademark Parrish swing, alongside freestyle electric piano motifs and plenty of Tone Control's original elements.

Review: Breathy trance lines and light drum snaps adorn the upper edges of this funky new EP from Velvet Velour, which drops imminently on Scratch Disks. Being by its very nature a 4x4 and floor-functional EP, there is an advanced palette of sound that weaves through and between this one's beats. 'Wonderful World Of You' is a strong highlight: some kind of rattly, resonant laser-synth sloshes about the mix, caressing our ears acoustically until the flow state is truly locked. 'No 172', meanwhile, ticks off the box as one for the garage heads. Impressive.
