Edits From The Tribe (12" reeditado)
Cat: EF 003. Rel: 18 Dec 17
  1. Jagger (5:40)
  2. Run Hot (6:05)
Review: The third EP from Peckham's hush-hush Edits From The Tribe series (which may or may not be helmed by South London's most famous Executive Producer) comes from a man renowned for his house revisions: Adesse Versions. Predictably, he delivers the goods, first via the bombastic, "Work"-era Masters At Work drums, woozy chords and jangling guitars of bona-fide basement banger "Jagger". While superb, it's flipside "Run Hot" - a jazzy, jammed-out deep house beast built around samples from a much-loved disco era classic previously sampled (way back) by Pepe Bradock - that's the real heat. It has "peak-time anthem" written allover it.

  1. Audiotheque - "Toolbox" (12:17)
  2. Nima Gorji - "Why So Serious" (9:45)
Review: Techy house-headz, Audiotheque and Nima Gorji, launch the Genesis imprint with new and exciting strains of highly calibrated dance formulas for anyone into, well, GOOD music! Audiotheque's "Toolbox" dominates the A-side with a relentlessly addictive bassline, sounding a bit like a blend between Dubfire and Boddika, carried on the back of what remains a largely minimalistic beat structure - what a winner! Gorji's "Why So Serious" is no less effective, but the producer has focussed more on the beat swing, creating a hypnotic loop clustered with all sorts of wild atmospherics for the smaller hours. Tip!

Day O (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: PF 100. Rel: 18 Dec 17
  1. Day-O (Past Fire edit) (8:36)
  2. Day-O (Past Fire dub) (8:41)
Review: This is one of those records that shouldn't work, but is actually irrepressibly good. It features two fantastic tweaks of a little known - and incredibly silly - 1989 cover of "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)" by short-lived Dutch combo Bless This Mess. The original is pretty bonkers - think tropical synth-pop meets humid Balearica meets trippy acid house - so A-side editor A Good Christian has done a fine job of turning it into guaranteed dancefloor gold. If anything, Young Marco's flipside Dub version, a pulsating 6am wig-out that utilizes just one vocal phrase ("daylight come and we want to go home", of course) is, if anything, even better. A quirky delight, all told.

Private Life (reissue) (12" reeditado)
Cat: DRIVE 001. Rel: 18 Dec 17
  1. Track 1 (6:43)
  2. Track 2 (6:33)
  3. Track 3 (5:18)
Review: Over two years at the tail end of the 1990s, Damon Wild and Mederic Nebinger delivered a string of impressive 12" singles as Blue Maxx. 1998's Private Life EP, which featured a trio of untitled tracks, was arguably the strongest of the lot - a fact that perhaps explains the high prices of second-hand copies online. This timely reissue presents all three tracks as they were all those years ago, beginning with the bustling, Motor City-influenced groove and warm, New Jersey style organs of "Track 1". Over on the flip, "Track 2" is a deep and spacey affair, with bleeping, high register melodies and sumptuous chords riding a hybrid electro/techno beat pattern, while "Track 3" is a classic chunk of Detroit techno lusciousness.

  1. Pattern A36 (8:15)
  2. And Nothing But The Tooth (7:36)
Review: There's usually a fair amount of funk at the heart of Lee Burton's on-point tech-house productions. That's certainly the case here; both A-side "Pattern A 36" and title track "And Nothing But The Tooth" are built around bumpin' drumbeats and rubbery, thickset basslines. Of the two, it's the gently spacey and melodious B-side roller, whose bassline attractively rises and falls while mutilated female vocal samples drift across the sound space, that probably hits home hardest. Even so, there's something undeniably attractive about the fizzing electrofunk synth line that frequently makes an appearance on "Pattern A 36".

  1. Kaldaer (9:44)
  2. Cutie (7:46)
  3. Shiftherise (7:37)
Review: Surprisingly, it's been two years since the last 12" from Cally, a Romanian tech-house producer with a string of previous releases for Fear of Flying, Inwave and Neostrictly under his belt. This is his first appearance on Malonian and sees him lay down three meandering, quietly attractive dancefloor rollers. On the A-side you'll find "Kaldaer", a ten-minute trip into slowly shifting motifs, low-slung bass and shuffling percussive hypnotism. He takes a slightly more positive and melodious approach on the flip, wrapping wavy ambient chords around a languid groove on "Cutie", before rounding things off via the sun-kissed warmth, poolside tech-house grooves and atmospheric background field recordings of "Shiftherise".

  1. Shining Of Life (2017 Full Moon mix) (15:13)
  2. Shining Of Life (The House Thing - unreleased mix) (8:21)
Review: Calm's "Shining of Life", a nu-jazz era fusion of soulful U.S house influences, jazzy instrumentation and life-affirming goodtime vibes, first appeared in stores way back in 2004. Here the Japanese producer has chosen to revisit his noughties classic, serving up a brand new "2017 Full Moon Mix" that pushes the track's gospel style vocals, fluid pianos, mazy synths and tasty, disco-influenced grooves to the fore. It's a superb revision, all told, and arguably even better than the near peerless original. On the flip you'll find an unreleased version from the archives that sounds like some long lost Frankie Knuckles remix - all expansive, eyes-closed piano solos, tactile synth bass and unfussy Chicago house beats.

  3. Cola (Franky Rizardo remix) (8:25)
  4. Cola (Mousse T Glitterbox mix) (6:38)
Review: There's a fair chance you'll already have heard "Cola", experienced production duo Camelphat's collaboration with vocalist Elderbrook. The original version, with its rumbling bass, atmospheric builds, subtle bassline house influence and "she sips the Coca-Cola" refrain, has become something of an anthem since first appearing on digital download earlier in the year. For this first vinyl release, Defected has packaged the now-familiar original mix with a trio of reworks. The most impressive of these comes from German veteran Mousse T. He brilliantly re-casts the track as a bumpin' chunk of celebratory disco-house complete with thrilling piano riffs and an elastic bassline.

  4. Saverio Celestri - "November Sun" (7:08)
Review: New Berlin imprint Panea is a concept based on sharing the passion for music and "to provide talented musicians, DJs and producers with valuable opportunities." More power to them we say! They're definitely off to a good start when you consider they've recruited a couple of the Slow Life alumni, namely Pepe Villalba; who provides the dusty and broken groove of "Earthbreak" and of course Saverio Celestri with the hypnotic lo-tech soul of "November Sun". Elsewhere, there's other fine grooves by Gustavo Cardenas & Dirty Lemon with the rolling hypno-groove of "On The Basis" and Primary Perception with another lovely excursion in broken beat deep house on "Voicing".

Review: Following up that awesome last release by Closed Paradise and one by Thatmanmonkz, the mysterious Parisian Chevals joins District Of Columbia based Better Listen for their eighth outing, after making his debut on NYC's Homage with a global affair. The sultry and bumpin' disco house of "Hot!" starts things burning up fairly quick on the A side, looped to perfection much like early Rick Wade or DJ Sneak. It is followed by the smooth, early evening boogie-down vibe of "Layover" featuring yet more come hither vocals and hypnotic xylophone action. On the flip, we have a surprise in the from of the blunted hip-hop joint that is "Homecoming" getting that gritty MPC feel on, with choice use of sampling.

Review: One third of Azymuth and an all-round legend Ivan Conti is set to drop his first solo album in over 20 years next year. And here's a wee teaser with three on-point versions from three exceptional soul craftsmen: Max Graef goes on the cloud hopping dreamy jazz tip, allowing Ivan's brushed drums to shimmer in the all the right spaces, Contours flex hard on a classic bruk vibe where the main players are Conti's swing and the juicy fruit bassline while Glenn Astro gets lively with a heavily shaking afro rhythm and sweeping p-funk chords. Bring on the album.

Review: Disuasiv are the duo of Romanians in Milan Dragosh and Andi Parlogea, who have had previous releases on tastemaker labels such as Broquade, Memoria and Pointilisme Musique. Their new 'Project M' EP shows off their flair for energetic tech house with futuristic tendencies once again, for local imprint Curtea Veche. This release inaugurates their new limited series, but keeping in kind that the parent label has released top notch Eastern European artists such as Sepp and Herck: so you know you are in good hands. The rolling and hypnotic "Brother Loopy" is quality gear to rock the crowd at that peak moment, with its tough groove. It also gets an amazing remix on the flip by homeboy Cally, which takes it deeper into after hours territory: the sort of track you'd imagine Cezar dropping at 7 in the morning! The percussion driven title track is assisted by an equally powerful bass and airy pads - this will mix in well with your Sepp or Nu Zau records.

  4. Franz Alice Stern - "Odi Et Amo" (6:18)
Review: Berlin's Kater crew are undoubtedly some of the city's most enduring icons of the infamous club scene there. From the days of Bar 25 through to Kater Holzig and now its current incarnation Kater Blau which successfully fought back against gentrification and the corporate takeover of the their hallowed grounds upon the iconic River Spree: their club has grown into a compound with so much more to offer than clubbing now. Add to that their successful in-house label Katermukke and and you can see why they truly are a force to be reckoned with. On the label Compilation 150.2, many of the usual suspects appear, serving up some irresistible tech house goodness. Local heroes Einmusik present yet more evocative dancefloor drama in the form of the bittersweet "Antelope", while Midas 104 tread the same territory with their dark and suspenseful track "Inner Child" that could have been equally at home on local powerhouse Stil Vor Talent. On the flip, Israeli talent and Girl Scout label head Magit Cacoon delivers the brooding and experimental minimalism of "Perfect Life" (Secret remix For Steven Wilson).

Review: X/OZ is a new force in Icelandic techno started by Exos, and following a sterling various artists release the label welcomes its masters in collaboration with Ohm, and the results are magnificent. "Thrir" opens the record up with typically Scandinavian drones and reduced grooves, while "Frodari" takes a more intimate approach further expanded upon by the additional ambient take of the track. "Data Re Entry" wriggles a cheeky acid line into the smoky mood on the B side, while "Hoggur" expounds the merits of utterly reduced, creepy-as-hell techno before the final ambient shimmers of "Snert Horpu Mina".

  1. Shaped Like Kayla (7:48)
  2. Who Is The Drummer (7:05)
  3. Navigate (7:13)
Review: Mannheim's favourite son Fabian Winkels returns with more bleepy and swing fuelled minimal tech house: exactly the way we like it. The man behind such imprints as Salty Nuts serves up his second release for the FUSE London sublabel here. "Shaped Like Kayla" demonstrating the same kind of hypnotic and slinky grooves that have landed him releases on top labels like Mulen and local institution La Pena. "Who Is The Drummer" gets that MPC style jitter on in fine form, assisted by bumpy bass and whirry synth textures for perfect afterhours mischief. Finally, "Navigate" fractures the beats for a different kind of groove altogether, but still trippy and funky as hell. Winkels is a regular on local imprints making big waves in the scene at present, such as Sukhumvit, Kusi and BE9. Likewise, Infuse have had a stellar year with great releases by Julian Alexander, East End Dubz and Jack Wickham.

  1. Reality Change (6:43)
  2. Cool Waters (7:10)
Review: Aussie artist Fantastic Man returns to action following a quiet 2017 with a two-track missive that's decidedly different from the warm, disco-tinged deep house with which he made his name. While both "Reality Change" and "Cool Waters" retain the core warmth and attention to detail we've come to expect, both look to the sci-focused futurism of classic Detroit techno for inspiration. "Reality Change" is perhaps the more spacey and dreamy of the two, with meandering, elongated chords rising above a bustling, acid-flecked, techno-tempo groove. "Cool Waters", on the other hand, feels more urgent in tone, with heavier analogue bass and sleazy, cut-up vocal samples combining to create an incessant late night groover.

Review: London's Place No Blame, set up and launched in 2016 with a killer head to head between the then relatively unknown DJ Slyngshot and Nippon legend Japan Blues, has finally re-surfaced from the depths. While this is only the label's second outing, it's clear that its head man, the enigmatic Zeno Cosini, prefers to deal in quality over quantity. From our own fleeting exchange with him, this is an intention rather than a random occurrence - "people need the truth now more than ever", was his only answer. Unsurprisingly, this new EP from the equally cryptic Michael Ferragosto seems like a perfect match; not only does the Italian put out a limited quantity of music, but we also believe it to be among the very best out there; from Muzique to his own Private Collection, each track has a rare honesty and mystery to it. These four killers are pure murder on the system - "Acid One" stomps its way with a heavy bass, "Bell'Acid" rips and tears the groove up with toxic 303 lashings, "Jack Me" is pure, heartfelt Chicago soul, and "Tour The Vibe" stretches the acid template to new levels of DIY funk. Let's just hope Cosini finds more truth to tell. Total killer from start to end - cop this quick - limited quantities available.
