Joy & Fantasy EP
Joy & Fantasy EP (yellow vinyl 12")
Cat: SNF 046RP. Rel: 18 Jan 21
  1. Area 39
  2. Cuba
  3. The Comedor
  4. Jura
Review: Bristol label Shall Not Fade take us back to the old school with this monstrous new EP from Adelphi Music Factory. 'Area 39' is a big, hands in the air like you just don't care track with massive bouncing breaks, retro stabs and plenty of smiley culture motifs. 'Cuba' is a raucous piano house cut that never lets up and 'The Comedor' has big, over the top samples, characterful vocals and physical drum work that will blow the roof off any rave. 'Jura' closes down in driving fashion with a cantering kick drum and unrelenting synth line up top.

  4. DJ Detox - "Better Days" (4:56)
It's time again for R.A.N.D. Muzik Recordings to serve up their annual 2412 compilation. It's another fine one in 2021 with fresh and exciting sounds from vital new school artists Bufiman, Roza Terenzi, Carmel & Salomo and DJ Detox. Bufiman opens up with a crunchy cut built on old school samples and crunchy breaks but finished with bright melody. Roza Terenzi then offers her typically unhinged grooves and Carmel & Salomo link for the escapist dream house of 'Like You.' DJ Detox brings the jungle massive on his high energy closer 'Better Days.'

  4. Big Fantasy (5:56)
Review:  Party days can't be that far away now, and Cardiology continue to have you covered with some of the choicest slabs in the edit game. This time it's C Da Afro on the buttons, shining bright after a massively productive 2020 in which he slipped out no less than five records. He's clearly not short on material to get busy on the slice and dice with, given the quality of the gear he's presenting on this new 12". As you'd expect for Cardiology the tracks aren't that easily trainspotted, ranging from the insanely catchy disco delights of 'Hustle' to the housed-up funk of 'Hold Up'. It's serious music for serious heads, but with that universal party starting appeal that any self-respecting disco edit should have.

Attenuator (12" reeditado)
Cat: PLE 654026. Rel: 19 Jan 21
  1. Attenuator (Carl Craig version) (8:53)
  2. Attenuator (Moritz Von Oswald dub) (6:53)
Review: Carl Craig and Moritz Von Oswald, two of techno's undisputed legends, team up on this fine release for the former's esteemed Planet E imprint. The first production to emerge from a series of studio sessions in Berlin and Detroit (and with more to come in the future) 'Attenuator' was originally produced together, but this two sided single sees them deliver their own distinct take on the material. The Carl Craig version on the A side is as epic as you could imagine from the veteran of the Motor City's second wave - proper 'hi-tech jazz' if we've ever heard it. On the flip, the Mortiz Von Oswald dub gets deep, dark and introspective, much in the vein of his seminal Basic Channel material.

Cat: LARV 019WHITE. Rel: 19 Jan 21
  1. Gabriel (The Scroll mix) (6:59)
  2. Gabriel (Tamborine dub) (7:13)
  3. Gabriel (live Garage) (7:25)
  4. Gabriel (Words To Give By) (7:22)
Review: Is there a more positive, soulful and life-affirming dancefloor anthem out there than Roy Davis Jr and Peven Everett's 1996 jam "Gabriel"? As many will be aware, it has long been sought of as a classic, with soulful house, deep house, US and UK garage DJs all championing it back in the day. This white vinyl reissue boasts all of the mixes featured on the original 12". Perhaps the most famous version is the rolling, bass-heavy two-step flex of the "Live Garage" mix that opens side B, but there's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere. The driving, jazzy-but-stomping "Words To Give By" version has been annoyingly overlooked over the years, while the "Tambourine Dub" is deliciously sweaty and driving in the best possible way.

Passing Runner
Cat: CCR 003. Rel: 19 Jan 21
  1. Passing Runner (7:44)
  2. Passing Runner (club Chilled) (10:21)
Review: For release number three, Club Chi'll welcomes back Harry Dennis, who previously released on the label under his more familiar Jungle Wonz alias. This time round he's joined in the studio by Chicago pal Lloyd Dex and the CCR All-Stars, a "fluid mix if musicians and productions who can step up, step in and inject their talents on the mix". In its original A-side club mix form, 'Passing Runner' is a cheerful and energetic house roller rich in raw analogue bass, boisterous piano solos, subtle electronic riffs and snaking saxophone solos courtesy of Harry Underwood. Over on the flip the track gets rebuilt in a more downtempo style, with the assembled ensemble conjuring an epic blend of sweeping synth-strings, bubbly ambient electronics, twinkling pianos and shuffling, mid-tempo breakbeats.

The Rhythm EP Part 2
The Rhythm EP Part 2 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: RVR 03. Rel: 18 Jan 21
  1. Don’t Go (5:39)
  2. Don’t Go (Ease Up George Flip) (5:12)
  3. U Want Wot? (5:38)
  4. Who Knows (VIP mix) (4:33)
Review: Rhythm Vibe keep the old-skool garage house flavour alive and well on this absolutely essential drop from Herb Rhythm, riding the kind of uptempo 4x4 flex that joins the dots between the scene's house roots and the speed garage that came after. The A side kicks off with the impeccable 'Don't Go', which rides the same vocal sample as FCL's deep house burner 'Lets Go' from 2010. Ease Up George gets busy on a remix of the track which injects some classy dubby shimmers and 2-step flex into the scenario, and it really works. 'U Want Wot?' is another tight and bumping joint with rich chords and oodles of soul, while 'Who Knows (VIP Mix)' gets things swinging good and proper without getting losing the smoother vibe that hangs over the whole EP.

SMALLHOURS 002 (12" reeditado)

  2. DJ Pipe - "Sky Lounge" (5:59)
  3. Youandewan - "Cauliflower Wing" (6:32)
  4. Rub800 - "CMON" (5:51)
Review: The second salvo on Small Hours is something of an all-star affair, with four fresh, previously unheard cuts from some seriously talented producers. Huerta leads the way with "Hey Fredo", a rubbery and atmospheric affair that effortlessly joins the dots between locked-in deep house and bleep techno, before DJ Pipe wraps dreamy chords, funk-fuelled guitar notes and toasty organ riffs around a squelchy bassline on "Sky Lounge". Over on side B, Youandewan heads towards peak-time floors via the hypnotic and psychedelic throb-job "Cauliflower Wing", while Rub800's "Cmon" flits between deep electro grooves, bleeping electronica and toasty deep house.

Review: Shall Not Fade sister label Lost Palms welcome Justin Jay for a classy debut here across six stylish house cuts. The Los Angeles producer is well known to those who know after a fine array of EPs for the likes of Ovum and Trick. The Bristol crew now get a load more goodness out of him starting with the quick and fuzzy house deepness of 'Questions'. There are also icy electro cuts like 'Lost Boi' and bumping tech cuts with plenty of atmosphere such as 'Ramen With The Boys' (feat Benny Bridges & Krywald & Farrer. The variation here is impressive.

  1. Sun After Rain (feat Folamour) (5:32)
  2. Body Do (feat Mike Bloom) (3:41)
  3. Sun After Rain (Kaidi Tatham After The Sun remix) (6:24)
Review: Globetrotting psychedelic soul maestro Jitwam has hooked up with producer extraordinaire Folamour for this one, an uplifting and sun drenched new EP on The Jazz Diaries. Opener 'Sun After Rain' is bathed in rays, with nice clean chord work and slinky drums all being primed for outdoor partying. 'Body Do' (feat Mike Bloom) is a deeper jam that shuffles on warm drums, with more lush chords and buttery vocals. Broken beat wizard Kaidi Tatham finally serves up an After The Sun remix of 'Sun After Rain' which is filled with trilling energy, up beat kicks and funky riffs to make you feel good.

  1. Resurgence (5:36)
  2. What Planet R You From (6:18)
  3. C'mon (6:37)
  4. Gamebai (7:21)
New Year, new label alert. This one will be a strictly vinyl only affair with this first missive from an artist from the two rather desperate destinations of Limerick in Ireland and Melbourne, Australia. It finds JJ Fortune getting nice and wonky with late night club tracks fusing wild melody, whirring electronics and bumping beats. 'Resurgence' is a colourful and kaleidoscopic affair that stays busy, 'What Planet R You From' is all crunchy 8bit sounds and tumbling synth modulations and 'C'Mon' keeps up the tinny 80s melodic vibes. 'Gamebai' closes out with more pixelated melodic rain and brilliantly unhinged groove madness.

Retro Future EP

  1. Pickled (6:21)
  2. Out Of Time (6:56)
  3. Groove Breakfast (4:55)
  4. In The Loft (5:53)
Review: Hot on the heels of his first outing on Constant Sound, rising star Kepler (real name Matthew Farrow) makes his first appearance on Sukhumvit. The Retro Future EP is well named, because you'll find plenty of vintage influences and good, old-fashioned inspirations amongst the four tracks on show. Bustling opener 'Pickled' adds mid-90s Korg M1 organ sounds, saucer-eyed ambient house chords and Orbital style melodies to an energetic, non-stop groove, while 'Out of Time' offers a similar blend of 1990s house sounds and contemporary club weight. Over on the reverse, 'Groove Breakfast' joins the dots between Italian piano house and mid-90s NYC house, before Kepler rounds things off with the sub-heavy snap and celestial synthesizer riffs of US garage-influenced roller 'In The Loft'.

  1. Gumbo (9:52)
  2. Custard Gannet (6:03)
  3. Gumbo (Blooty mix) (6:01)
Review: Here's a welcome surprise: a reissue of one of the most revered records in the back catalogue of sadly departed Sheffield deep house imprint Toko. This 1997 gem is actually an all-star affair, with Klarky Cat (a reference to legendary satirical show Brass Eye) being a collaboration between Chris Duckenfield, Toko bosses Alec Greenhough and Paul Ingall (better known as Attaboy) and influential, overlooked Manchester producer Si Brad. In. its original form, "Gumbo" mixes the wavy, loved-up dreaminess of classic deep house with the organ sounds of U.S garage and the swinging, occasionally glitchy drums of early UK tech-house. It comes backed with a darker, chunkier and more foreboding rework (the mesmerising "Blooty Mix"), and the bright, acid-flecked sunrise giddiness of rather good bonus track "Custard Gannet".

Review: It is undeniably one of the most iconic house tracks of all time: 'The Nervous Track' by Masters At Work Present Nu Yorican Soul is an exquisite coming together of MAW's deep musical heritage, Latin roots and majestic studio skills. It first landed in 1993 and its deep bass, rich bass and expressive percussion all made an immediate impact. Here presented on limited edition yellow vinyl, it comes with various mixes that highlight different aspects of the arrangement. The Horny Mix is fun, the Yellow Mix is more dreamy, but the Ballsy Mix remains a firm favourite.

  3. Arco (8:02)
  4. Arco (Danceapella) (6:08)
Review: NY Graffiti's imlookin4thedoor is a fantastic workout for the dubstep lovers out there. It's a first release from new label Peace Anthem Records and offers four big tunes. Opener 'Imlookin4thedoor' is a tightly woven rhythm with jungle sound effects and a sense of tribalism, while next up is a Humanist mix of 'Big Smoke.' It's a misty and atmospheric tune riding in chunky drums and 'Arco' then trips you out with some skipping drum programming, spacious hits and a nice absorbing atmosphere. Last of all, the Danceapella slows things right down to a purposeful all body workout.

  1. Cosmic Funk (4:54)
  2. Ms Brown (3:52)
  3. We Do It (5:35)
  4. Fresh Groove (4:54)
Review: Cardiology get serious yet again on their fourth outing with The Owl taking a break from his self-titled label to follow up February's Universal Funk with some further sizzling edits. First up is a twist on Mad Dog Fire Department's classic party starter "Cosmic Funk", which gets a tasteful house thump to amp up the dancefloor impact of the track. "Ms Brown" is a big singalong belter with a beat to match, while "We Do It" smooths things out with a slinky vibe that translates well to another forthright 4/4 bump. "Fresh Groove" finishes the record off in a steamy, hazy groove that will take the dancers deeper in, without a doubt.

Their latest comes from Italian producer Luca Piermattei, who follows up releases for Retro Beats Conspiracy, Colt and his own Polarity imprint with the 2020 EP. Featuring some groovy minimal shuffle funk as heard on 'Vitamins', dusty and understated microhouse for introspective moments on the dancefloor on 'Mother Nature' and some glassy-eyed and bittersweet deepness that's perfect for sunny Sunday afternoons heard on 'Dedicated To The Victims'.

Review: Adam Pits gets his 'International Wafter' served up on its own 12" here along with a super selection of remixes. It still sounds fantastic with its rubbery kicks and corrugated bass rolling at an inviting mid tempo. Label mainstay Ciel then steps up for a first remix that pairs everything back to cavernous, bouncy drums and watery effects and rhythm innovator Roza Terenzi remixes '
Motion Sensor' into a brightly lit and pixelated melodic rave up with thumping kicks and endless cosmic rains. Last of all, Seb Wildblood brings a tribal take on deep techno with his surging kicks and pulsing pads all melting your mind.

Review: This marks a first ever solo EP for Canberra based producer and DJ Point Guard, who has previously landed on Pure Space. He opens up with the majestically speed out sounds of 'Motions' which is awash with lovely chords and far-gazing pads. 'Sex Drive' comes back down to earth with hulking great kick and a steamy, libidinous atmosphere that draws you in deep and 'Hibiscus' then goes for an all out march on a rubbery bassline and popping hits. Sydney native PMA remixes 'Motions' to round out a fresh EP with a sense of menace.

Review: Bristol party and label Just Jack welcome unsung Detroit hero in the form of Gari Romalis. He brings all the sounds you'd expect of a Motor City artist - depth, soul and warmth. 'Panic In Detroit' (Goos Life Mix) is a mid tempo jam that will warm up early evening floors. 'Final Fronteer' (Brain Block mix) is a deep and cuddly cut with hip swinging claps and splashy hi hats and last of all comes the best fo the lot, 'Hard Rain.' It has smooth drum loops that rock back and forth and draw you in beneath balmy cosmic pads and far-sighted sense of melancholy. This is tasteful, subtle dance music for the heads.

  4. BAUCH3 (6:29)
Review: Nail is back on 89:Ghost with more of his sublime trippers delights as Smoke. This is the UK tech house don at his deepest, eking out a perfectly fluid strain of dub-inflected grooves to take you further in and farther out. Lead track 'DBSDUB2' is awash with gorgeous chords and strung out soul licks, all underpinned by a simply perfect groove. 'BAQDUB' uses a more broken thread of percussion to accentuate the rhythm, while 'HOTARU' keeps things more tightly clipped without losing that shimmering veneer. 'BAUCH3' is the more ambient of the cuts on this 12", taking the aesthetics of the other three and jettisoning off into pure dubbed out bliss.

On the A side we have the, how would you say, ULTRA deep and evocative mood music of 'Free' with its unmistakable vocal from a legend, that's been pitched down to rather moody effect over reduced groove dynamics. This is perfect tackle for afterhour dancefloors in Berlin and Bucharest. Scottish producer Vince Watson, now based in the 'Dam, is he man behind the originals, but first to flip is Joe Claussell the dub master who brings real spirituality to his work, In his hands, 'Progress' is a piano laced, deep and sine tingling house love affair, while Yoruba master Osunlade layers in his bright synths and layers of percussion to take you to a higher plane. After Manoo, Poker Flat boss Steve Bug links with longtime collaborator Langenberg for the most tech-edged version.

  1. That Sound (6:41)
  2. That Sound (Anoraak remix) (4:42)
  3. Peace (7:24)
  4. Little Loving (6:20)
Review: Marseille's Ravanelli Disco Club returns with Antwerp-based Aymeric, resident at Geheimzinnig and Transit clubs, for their eighth release. Expect sexy, disco-tinged deep house all the way across That Sound EP. From the dreamy and low slung title track which gets a sultry, boogie down rework by mighty Frenchman Anoraak up next. On the flip, more club ready vibes await on the uplifting, Chicago inspired vibe of 'Peace' followed by the thumping funky house of 'Little Loving' with a distinct "French Touch" vibe that you'll love as much as we did.

Review: Bicep's second album is shaped by the experience of touring their debut long player for something like three years, a period during which they honed and perfected their instinct for tracks that would stand the test of time and repeated listening. What develops is a distinctive style typified by a combination of ethereal sonics and cheeky, memorable instrumental hooks, only set to a variety of beats that reference and indeed fuse the plethora of different dance genres that have sprung up since the acid house revolution if the mid-80s. So we get everything from the electro-tainted 'X' to 'Rever', where an African choir floats over a subtle deep house shuffle and 'Saku', where UKG bass pressure and skippy beats provide a hypnotic background for Clara La San's sweet but ghostly voice.

Review: On its initial release in 1994, "Sceneries Not Songs" became deep house legend Larry Heard's first solo album under his given name. At the time, it caused quite a stir on the electronic underground, in part because it saw the Chicago veteran showcase the depth and variety of his musical personality whilst retaining the emotive dreaminess and jazzy inflections that had always been a big part of his work. As this much-needed vinyl reissue proves, it remains a stunning album. Highlights include the sparkling synthesizers, slo-mo grooves and twinkling pianos of "Tahiti Dusk", the classic Heard deep house warmth of "Midnight Movement", the head-nodding trip-hop-goes-ambient jazz flex of "Summertime Breeze" and the luscious beauty of bonus cut "Question of Time".

Review: Kasper Marott's debut album Full Circle on his own Axces Recordings imprint is an adventurous work that pushes his own musical boundaries. Across 11 tracks, a far-travelling range of moods and grooves is offered up with rich layers and tight structures keeping you locked. There is turbocharged techno, skeletal and slow motion rhythm workouts like 'Mere' and pumping, sweaty, trance inducing club tracks Omar S would be proud of with 'Mini Trance.' The melodic majesty of 'Pling' is another highlight that show this artist has come a long way since his first release in 2018 on Modeselektor's Seilscheibenpfeiler label.
