We (12")
We
Cat: WE 001. Rel: 31 Mar 20
  1. Julion DeAngelo - "N'Aie Pas Peur" (Exchange mix) (8:19)
  2. Julion DeAngelo - "Don't Be Scurred" (4:41)
  3. Viola Klein - "We" (part 1) (2:17)
  4. Viola Klein - "We" (feat Whodat - part 2) (5:54)
  5. Viola Klein - "We" (Another part) (5:16)
Review: Here's something to warm the cockles of even the stoniest of hearts: an impressively percussive, Mbalax-influenced take on Detroit style deep house from Julion De Angelo and recent Workshop artist Viola Klein. De Angelo handles side A, delivering two tracks that flit woozy male vocal samples, twinkling piano motifs and dusty, ultra-deep musical flourishes with drums that sit somewhere between African tribal workouts and Moodymann style MPC-driven house beats. Viola Klein's flipside suite of tracks is, if anything, even more percussive, with the dense drums and hazy chords of "We (Part One)" being followed by the ghetto-tech influenced high-tempo beats, hand percussion and fluid piano of WhoDat collaboration "We (Part Two)" and the Sabar drums and ambient chords of hectic closing cut "We (Part Another Part)".

  1. Dj Steaw - "This Kind Of Music" (6:26)
  2. Dj Steaw - "Fat Sherbet" (5:59)
  3. Gunnter - "Wait" (6:06)
  4. Gunnter - "Shhhake It" (6:11)
Review: French deep house imprint Rutilance reaches its 'Twentieth' release as the name suggests, with four surefire tracks by its label chiefs. On the A side, the ever reliable DJ Steaw hands in two tributes to the sounds of yesteryear: he first captures the classic sound of the Cab Drivers on the tough rolling analogue bounce of "This Kind Of Music", followed by the funky disco loops on "Fat Sherbet". On the flip, co-head Gunnter makes a rare appearance and pushes the envelope harder with his tough rolling and dubby stomper "Wait" and closes it out with the entrancing energy of "Shhhake It" where its sonar bleeps hypnotise you against a backdrop of Todd Terry style 4/4 breakbeats.

  4. Jad & The - "Deep Dark Grimey Dancefloor Moment" (6:05)
  5. Shy One - "House Party" (4:23)
  6. Session Victim - "Gheister" (2:10)
Review: The second sampler for Rhythm Section International's fifth anniversary compilation has landed, and like its predecessor is packed to the rafters with must-check gear. Duke Hugh kicks things off with the short-but-sweet, Rhodes-powered soundscape "Zoe", before Research Club delivers some bubbly pitched-down acid ("Cafe Iguana") and Paula Tepe jams out some quirky proto-house goodness ("Panamericana"). Over on side B Jad Lee (as Jad & The) takes over with some deep, reggae-influenced breakbeat house, before handing the baton to Shy One with the deep, bruk-up dreaminess of "House Party". Session Victim provides a fittingly strong conclusion with the quirky deep house drowsiness of "Gheister".

  1. Put You Back Into It (6:45)
  2. Put You Back Into It (Quentin Harris remix) (8:17)
Review: Second time around for Peven Everett's "Put Your Back Into It", which has become an in-demand record since it first hit stores 10 years ago. This official reissue replicates the track listing of the original pressing. Everett's original version is an undulating, soft-spun deep house delight, with the producer adding his own superb, soul-soaked versions to a backing track rich in shuffling, floor-friendly drums, warm bass and jazzy keys. On the flipside, remixer Quentin Harris gives the track a little more bass-heavy bump, employing slightly heavier drums and some rich chords, whist making more of Everett's impeccable Fender Rhodes work.

  2. V's Miss Siam (6:26)
  3. Automatic (remix) (6:57)
  4. TT - "Dub Inside" (Robot84 Balearic Re Work) (7:56)
Review: The Robot84 team of Andy Williams and Scott Ferguson have already struck gold on a number of occasions with their cool and deadly disco edits, and they're at it once again with this scene-approved dose of peak time party fuel. "V's King Supreme" is a cheeky, feel-good disco house burner with all the funk poured in and the campness bursting out like a glitter fountain. "V's Miss Siam" is a fierce Italo thumper with a pulsing arpeggio and spine-tingling synth licks on top. "Automatic (Remix)" is a smart and snappy slice of electronic disco while the "Balearic Re-Work" of TT's "Dub Inside" smooths things out with an early 90s flavoured baggy roller par excellence.

Mushrooms (12")
Cat: DG 11. Rel: 01 Apr 20
  1. Mushrooms (Salt City Orchestra remix) (8:11)
  2. Mushrooms (Noosa Heads Remake) (9:36)
Review: Frankfurt veterans Andre Walter and Chris Liebing sure have a thing for the northwestern region of the land down under, producing first under the alias of Brisbane and then the short lived Noosa Heads project. It's the latter that they have turned in this now legendary remix of the Marshall Jefferson classic "Mushrooms" on their now defunct Soap Records back in 1996. Now, Milan's Dark Groove present this very welcome reissue, with the original A side rework by British legends Salt City Orchestra, who serve up their deeply smooth and sensual perspective, while Walter and Liebing's mesmerising and dub-laden tech house journey is the perfect backdrop for that now legendary (trippy!) monologue atop

  1. Let Go (Kai Alce DISTINCTIVE mix) (9:11)
  2. Let Go (feat Francesco Fratini - Reekee Trumpet mix) (7:41)
  3. Let Go (Reekee alternate version) (6:20)
Review: For the latest missive on his on-point Wrong Notes label, boss man Reekee has temped Angela Tarrant AKA Angel-A back to the label following her fine lead vocal on Vick Lavender's 2019 gem "Cosmic Love". "Let Go" is an effortlessly soulful number, with Kai Alce's incredible A-side version, which features some additional synth solos and keys by regular collaborator Chris Irvine, delivering the kind of deep, seductive and rolling workout that should appeal to DJs and dancers beyond the soulful house scene. Reekee takes over on the flip, firstly offering up a jazz-funk-fired broken beat "Trumpet Mix" (it includes some fine trumpet solos from pal Francesco Fratini) before delivering a deep, spacey and woozy deep house take (the "Alternate Version").

  1. Slaves Incorporated - "Baby" (7:58)
  2. Tom Gillieron - "The Fire" (6:41)
Review: For Those That Knoe kick off a new series of DJ-oriented heaters dug out of forgotten corners of the dance music sprawl, and the first installment finds label head Ben Boe doing the digging. He's picked out two absolute gems you may well have not heard before - Paul Rayner's Slaves Incorporated track "Baby" and Tom Gillieron's "The Fire". The former is a rare slice of mid '90s UK garage which teeters between New Jersey bounce and London tuffness, while the latter is a wonderfully clattering slice of jazz-funk laced broken beat for soul cats and breaks-minded ravers alike to flex to.

Exit Planet Earth: Carbon (140 gram vinyl 12" in spot-varnished sleeve)

  2. 214 - "Testy Robot" (5:53)
  3. Reedale Rise - "Lux" (5:51)
  4. Derek Carr - "The Gap" (6:22)
Review: 20/20 Vision have firmly gaffa taped their flag to the electro antennae with "Exit Planet Earth", a new compilation series celebrating veterans and newcomers in the business of tweaked out machine funk. The Hacker is up first with "Positif/Negatif", a rubbery, FX-laden workout with plenty of uneasy space around the core rhythm section. 214 follows up with the decidedly creepy, sound design-embellished "Testy Robot". On the flip Reedale Rise brings something a bit livelier with the plush synth flex pinging through "Lux". Derek Carr completes the set with "The Gap", a lush slice of melancholic machine dreaming for mellower moments.

  3. Does It Make You Feel Good? (Mind Enterprises remix instrumental) (7:00)
  4. Does It Make You Feel Good? (CC DISCO vs DJ Boring Ministry Of dub remix) (6:53)
Review: Last year, Confidence Man returned to action with a single that asked a simple question: "does it make you feel good?" The answer, of course, was yes, and it would be fair to say that this new set of remixes is equally positive in tone. Greg Wilson and Che Wilson handle side A, successfully re-imagining the track as a warm, dreamy and bass-heavy chunk of crunchy breakbeat house powered forward by a classic hip-house break. The mix is available in both vocal and instrumental variations, with the former arguably being the more impactful of the two. Over on side B, Mind Enterprises delivers a thumping, Italo-disco style take, while CC Disco and DJ Boring join forces on a chunky, forthright house mix that draws inspiration from 1990s US garage dubs.

Atlas (1-sided 12")
Cat: ZEN 12541. Rel: 03 Apr 20
  1. Atlas (7:24)
Review: Belfast boys Bicep have been surprisingly quiet of late, with this single-sided salvo marking their first new music since 2018. Apparently inspired by their globe-trotting DJ experiences of the past couple of years, the track is as vibrant, colourful and emotive as you'd expect, with the Northern Irish duo layering glistening, ear-catching synthesizer lead lines, drifting vocal samples, sunrise-ready pads and tweaked electronics atop a loose-limbed, breakbeat-influenced rhythm and rumbling bass. It's perhaps not as in-your-face as some of their releases, but it certainly boasts great dancefloor weight, as well as a blend of musical elements that tends towards the loved-up and glassy-eyed.
