Cat: TX 112. Rel: 23 Jan 20
  1. No Way Back (vocal mix) (5:02)
  2. No Way Back (instrumental mix) (4:58)
Review: Although there may be many copies of this release knocking around, this reissue follows in line with the high-grade series of remastered classics that Trax have issued in recent times. When it comes to primordial house music there can be few originals as essential as this jam from Adonis. Whether you plump for the unhinged metallic vocal version or the focused pressure of the instrumental, dancefloors across the globe have lost their proverbials to this track for over thirty years for good reason. If you don't own it already then this pumped up release may be just the thing to make a classic swing with the beefiest of modern productions.

Review: It was the best part of 10 years ago when Jorge Caiado was making some strong early steps on the mighty Balance, and here he is delivering a full-length for Groovement that's been seven years in the making. "Time & Space", as the name might suggest, look beyond the demands of the dance to explore a broader perspective of electronic music. Don't let the swooning ambient opener fool you though, there's plenty of Caiado's signature smooth as silk house to sip on too. "Nasha's Groove" is especially satisfying, while "Magic Carpet" brings a little salsa to the table. With soul, ambience, funk and freshness all rolled into one package, Caiado's long-winded album journey has been entirely worth it.

Ancestral Food & Healing Medicine (coloured vinyl 12")
Cat: SRM ANCESTRAL1 EP. Rel: 20 Jan 20
  1. Elegua (feat Jose Cochise Claussell Of Rebel Tumbao) (3:45)
  2. Makussa PT Three (Afrikan Basement extended demo mix) (9:13)
  3. Diyi Mayo (live Jam extended mix) (9:32)
  4. Afrofunkjazz (extended demo mix) (8:31)
Review: Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell's latest round of spiritual and percussive dancefloor workouts were apparently "randomly selected" from the vaults of DJ tools and work-in-progress tracks tucked away under the floorboards at Sacred Rhythm HQ. Naturally there's nothing genuinely "half-finished" here, just a quartet of cuts worthy of your attention. He begins with "Elegua", a West African style workout that boasts call-and-response group vocals and a loose, languid tribal rhythm track, before moving towards heavy Afro-house territory via the deep, dark analogue bass, machine beats and densely layered percussion of "Makussa PT Three". Over on side B, "Di Mayo" layers sharp, spacey synths and lashings of special effects to a dubbed-out Afro-house rhythm, while the gloriously colourful "Afrofunkjazz" lives up to its title.

  1. Rollerskatestyle (11:15)

  3. Duck Jibe (4:14)
  4. Prima 5 (5:26)
Review: The third part of DJ Pegasuz's M.I.E.F. series is long overdue as the last outing was three years ago. The time since has served the artist well as these hulking great house bangers attest: "Rollerskatestyle" has rock solid kicks that blow away any cobwebs, and "Dayton" is a zero-fucks-given stomper with jazzy keys working hard to bring nuance to the brilliantly flat footed drums. "Duck Jibe" is loopy, chord laced, brain frying funk and "Prima 5" brings some humid lo-fi depth to what is a fantastically in your face EP that's packed with attitude.

  3. John's Church (feat Nils Ohrmann - Mousse T extended Disco Shizzle remix) (5:51)
  4. The Delta (feat Matthew K & Daddy Hemingway - Kelly G Defected dub) (7:01)
Review: Classic do a fine job here of enlisting various remixers to tackle key tracks from German house maestro Oliver Dollar's latest album. Label boss Luke Solomun goes first in cahoots with Chicago originator Honey Dijon, and the pair cook up a steamy, raw and right on remix of the gospel house original. Riva Starr goes for a slamming house take on "Crusader" and the 90s superstar Mousse T brings plenty of disco dazzle. Kelly G might steal the show with a low slung, warm and feel good dub mix to close things out in style.

Cat: RMS 012. Rel: 21 Jan 20
  1. The Tease (6:24)
  2. Stomp (7:43)
  3. BEP (6:49)
  4. Soul Searching (HVBR edit) (7:47)
Review: George Feely's previous outings on Random Mind State offered "Random Edits" - floor-focused reworks that combined loops and samples from disco and funk cuts with contemporary drum machine rhythms. On his return to the imprint after a two-year absence Feely flips the script, instead offering up a quartet of personal productions on a house tip. Up first is the garage-influenced peak-time bump of "The Tease" - all ear-catching stabs, swinging drums and raw analogue bass, before turning your attention to the hip-house-goes-rave insanity of acid-fired highlight "Stomp". There's a slightly deeper but similarly retro-futurist feel about B-side opener "BEP", while "Soul Searching (HVBR Edit)" is a fine house style revision of what sounds like a Philadelphia Soul classic.

More Than Friends EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: LIH 038. Rel: 20 Jan 20
  1. More Than Friends (7:20)
  2. More Than Friends (Marcel Vogel & Tim Jules remix) (6:37)
  3. Take You Away (7:12)
Review: Lumberjacks In Hell welcome Croatian producer Andrej Laseech to the table following his promising early outings on Be Yourself and Sound Exhibitions. On this release, Laseech has reached out to the mighty, eternally prolific Javonntte for a little vocal magic, resulting in the utterly sexy deep house burner "More Than Friends". It's a track that Marcel Vogel & Tim Jules clearly dig, judging by the light touch they applied to their own remix of the track. "Take You Away" on the flip is another sweet and sultry warm-up or backroom jam that gets lifted even higher by Javonntte's stellar vocals.

  1. Le Loup - "Pop That!!" (6:15)
  2. Le Loup - "Axone" (7:11)
  3. Takashi Himeoka - "Another Galaxy" (7:02)
  4. Takashi Himeoka - "Gravity Turn" (6:30)
Review: Diminutive Frenchman Le Loup is a master minimalist who really digs deep here on his two offerings alongside Takashi Himeoka who takes acre of the flipside. "Pop That!!" is a driving late night beat with funky rubber bass, and "Axone" gets more weird and freaky for those late night dances. Himeoka's serves up some superbly clean tones on his wonky hi-tech house cut "Another Galaxy" then "Gravity Turn" closes out in more melancholic but just as deep fashion. These are four fantastic efforts that will soundtrack just about any moment in the night.

  2. H - 2403 - 19 (5:58)
  3. K - 1205 - 19 (6:52)
Review: The Lisiere Collectif trio have clocked up some pretty impressive credits so far, not least on Mike Grant's Moods & Grooves. For their next trick, though, they return to their own label LSR for a fourth EP of dreamscape tech. Fist out of the blocks is the intergalactic adventure that is "D - 2403 - 19" with its warped acid bass and twinkling melodic rain. "H - 2403 - 19" is more melancholic, with pensive bass and a nagging lead bringing a sense of loss. "K - 1205 - 19" is the most kinetic of the lot, with brisk drum programming and a whole eco-system of deft sonic details making it as colourful as it is compelling,

  3. Bens (5:00)
  4. Bedroom Euphoria (5:40)
Review: "Try To Live Through This Night" has one of the most bumping basslines you're likely to have heard all year. It's just one of the many elements that makes the track such a timeless bit of high grade dancing material. Robbenspierre is an Italian producer based in Turin but there is a distantly UK flavour to his fusion of tech house breaks, electro and minimal here: "Shake You Out" harks back to the 90s and Terry Francis, "Bens" is a slippery bit of funk that Craig Richards often leans on and "Bedroom Euphoria" is pure-post rave euphoria. Essential stuff.

  1. The Drive (5:50)

  3. Fray (5:19)
  4. Air House (4:52)
Review: Romain FX comes to Fauve with some hard-strutting disco shapes to impart for all you fabulous freaks of the night. "The Drive" leads the way with a nagging, seemingly endless arpeggio draped in subtle flecks of harmonizing synth shapes - it makes for the perfect energised club track. "Ke Ai" is a more emotional number that seeks to tug at the heart strings even as it makes you move. "Fray" brings something a little cheekier with its darting high-register lead lines, sweet chords and airy mixdown - this is one for the terraces of the warmer months to come. "Air House" completes the set with a dreamy, pad soaked floater that keeps that sturdy disco-informed rhythm section intact.

Review: Verdant Recordings welcome a new name with an accomplished past under other aliases. Joe Lucas has released on Tusk Wax, Boogie Box and Birdie as Causa, but here he becomes Sixtyone for a trip into the kind of ethereal techno excursions that have been shaping Verdant out as a must-check label for some time. "Caurel" sets things off in illustrious style before the more dubby tones of "Zelo" and the ambient pensiveness of "Tregnanton". Stojche delivers a punchy remix of "Zelo" on the B side before Hiver works some elegant rhythms into "Tregnanton", rounding out another sterling installment in Verdant's evolving story.
