Review: Ryan Adams' Wednesday album was released in 2020 and is introspective with songwriting up there with the best Americana. It's a world away from the classic rock swagger of his previous album, Prisoner, but no less powerful. This new album takes the exact same tracklist and reinvents the sound and spirit. It's a novel approach and a refreshing way of thinking about new studio releases for a label. 'Dreaming You Backwards and 'I'm Sorry and I Love You' has more of a more baroque pop with lush string sounds embellishing the fraught emotional tension; 'Dreaming Of You Backwards' is similarly majestic with classical music references guiding it. Compare these takes with the previous record's soulful rock feel - close in some ways to the sound of Hiss Golden Messenger - and it becomes clear Adams has shed that sound completely and achieved a true reinvention.

Review: In 2020, Ryan Adams released Wednesdays, an album up there with Neil Young's greatest stuff. It's cinematic with the full throttle rock of his previous album, Prisoner, dimmed down. It was an Americana album with his rock DNA still on show. Another Wednesdays takes a step further into classical and baroque pop territory, allowing the beauty of his lyrics to shine on a different canvas. Hearing tracks such as 'I'm Sorry And I Love You' underpinned by lush strings and piano with little else emphasises the power and majesty of his lyrics. Adams has long proved himself as one of America's all-time great songwriters, but to hear him push himself with the arrangements in genres that he's less familiar with, but still achieve greatness, shows that he's on another level to most.

Review: This live album captures the raw energy and emotional depth of a legendary goth band's performance, showcasing their latest work in its full, unfiltered glory to an intimate crowd (albeit with a massive global streaming audience). Debuting the entire new album for the first time to an eager London crowd, the band delivers a powerful, immersive experience. Tracks like 'Alone' and 'End Song' stand out as some of the most hauntingly beautiful and intense pieces in the band's catalogue, with the live setting amplifying their emotional weight. The band's iconic sound, a blend of atmospheric melancholy and brooding intensity, resonates deeply, drawing the audience into every note and lyric. The live rendition of these songs adds a new layer, with the crowd's energy and the band's commanding performance elevating the material. Since its release, the accompanying live album has been met with widespread acclaim, charting in the top five across numerous countries, proving that the band's impact remains as potent as ever.

Review: Fontaines D.C.'s fourth album, Romance, marks the band's first collaboration with producer James Ford and represents their most adventurous and inventive work to date. Following the success of their acclaimed 2022 album Skinty Fia, which topped the UK and Irish charts and earned them International Group of the Year at the 2023 Brit Awards, Romance is set to push their sound further. The explosive lead single 'Starburster' was inspired by lead singer Grian Chatten's panic attack so features intense breath patterns and shifting dynamics. Elsewhere the band's evolution is there for all to hear with with influences from grunge, electronica, and hip-hop reflecting their ongoing growth and experimentation.

Review: Guided By Voices are nothing if not prolific songwriters. This is the band's 41st album and 18th in 10 years. It's refreshing to see this maverick group defy the norms set by the record industry in terms of staggering releases to benefit sales and just go for it. Band leader Robert Pollard is the sole constant member having had many line-up changes over the years, but he has steadied the ship somewhat as the current serving musicians are the longest running in the band's history. They've now made 17 albums since 2017. Where this album differs is it offers more sonic diversity whilst maintaining their unmistakable anthemic character. "I wanted to create, hopefully, an experience, kind of a wild ride, where the listener would want to hear it multiple times in order to grasp all the sections and fields of sound to discover something new with each listen," says Pollard. "I trimmed down the songs so that there wasn't a lot of repetition, so you get a lot of sections that happen only once or twice." A punk sentiment - again disregarding norms - where they're sounding all the more invigorated for it.

Review: The Sunday was a beloved late 80s/early 90s indie rock band that released three acclaimed albums in both the European and US markets. Their debut, Reading, Writing and Arithmetic, was released in 1990 and became a chart success worldwide, riding on the success of their 1989 breakthrough hit 'Here's Where The Story Ends'. Lead singer Harriet Wheeler captivated audiences with her distinctive voice while the band delivered captivating hooks and grooves to complement her vocals, clocking in somewhere between the jangle of The Smiths and the darker hues of The Cure and the sonic sparkle of Cocteau Twins. After three albums with Rough Trade, Parlophone, and Geffen Records, they disappeared from the scene following 1997's Static & Silence. Now, a limited edition 180g black vinyl of Reading, Writing & Arithmetic is available having been remastered from the original analogue tapes.

Tormento (instrumental)
Review: A collaborative effort between composer and multi-instrumentalist Louis Fontaine, DJ and music supervisor Alix Brown and lyricist and writer Margo Fortuny. The tune draws on French and Italian Chanson (the likes of Fabrizio De Andre and Serge Gainsbourg), the cinematic soundscapes of Francois de Roubaix and late-70s disco. It's built up using vintage synthsizers and despite the patchwork blanket approach with influences, it's woven into something quite cohesive and magical. Singer Alix Brown has the voice to have made her a number one star in the 70s - she appears to have taken a Bill and Ted-esque adventure from another decade and does nostalgia superbly. It's an intoxicating listen and one to rinse on repeat.

Review: The Chameleons have never been darlings of the indie press in the same way other Manchester bands such as The Stone Roses, Joy Division and The Smiths have been. Nevertheless, they never let that stand in their way and became one of the biggest bands in the city and shaped it in many ways. For instance, it's hard to imagine the early Stone Roses' atmospheric sound coming off in the same way if it wasn't for The Chameleons. This release captures them performing to a packed Hacienda just a few months before they released their Cure and Joy Division-esque debut album and so the setlist draws heavily from that classic. There's also cuts that never saw a studio release and were only played live, such as 'Men Of Steel' and 'Years Ago', making for a rich, deep dive into one of the key bands of post-punk history.

Review: Few songwriters have the ability to pen a melody that welcomingly sticks in your head for years after you hear it only once but Sharon Van Etten has that. It's especially prominent on the Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter's track from her fourth album, originally released in 2014, 'Every Time The Sun Comes Up'. Fast forward ten years past two more acclaimed solo albums and Van Etten has reached a new phase where she's been writing more collaboratively with her band, hence why The Attachment Theory are named on the record. "For the first time in my life I asked the band if we could just jam. Words that have never come out of my mouthiever! But I loved all the sounds we were getting. I was curiousiwhat would happen?" she says in a press release. And the result of that different approach is staggering. The first single 'Afterlife' shoots like a dagger to the heart and the gloom pop melds swagger and sadness into an atmospheric triumph. This record is likely going to be in many best of 2025 album lists.

Review: Despite forming as recently as 2019 and signing with Matador in merely 2021, Horsegirl are hitting their stride, clocking up some top tier collaborations and endorsements from esteemed elders of the indie rock community. To record this album, which is the follow-up to their 2022 debut, they headed to Wilco's studio in Chicago and had none other than Welsh musician Cate Le Bon produce it. The result has been less Breeders-esque grunge saturation and an embracing of bright, clear sonic territories which brings them closer towards The Clean-esque jangle pop sound - it massively suits them. And they've added violin and synths to their guitar-y core which gives them a new dimension and more compelling arrangements than ever before.

Review: The Verve are up there with the Smiths in terms of bands you wish would still be together but personal relationships within the band make it appear next to impossible that they'll be resurrected. Fortunately, they're still putting out releases to commemorate their legacy. This is an updated version of their 2004 best-of release. Celebrating 20 years since it came out on CD, and now on vinyl for the first time, new features include material from the band's 2008 reunion album, Forth - the banging 'Love Is Noise' and majestic 'Rather Be' - as well as the eight-and-a-half-minute version of their second single 'She's A Superstar' (1992). The band were into more psychedelic dream pop and shoegaze-y sounds at that time. It was later that they would venture into leaner songwriting and pen hits such as 'Lucky Man' and 'Sonnet', which still to this day are among the finest songs released by any band ever.

Review: A limited-edition version of one of the high-water marks of The Cult's back catalogue. Originally released in 2001, it was their first album in more than six years and showcases the band's return to their signature rock sound while also dabbling with new techniques. It's the only Cult album to feature one of rock's all-time greats - Guns N' Roses' Matt Sorum - on drums. And it's immensely powerful, with 'War (The Process)' and 'Take The Power' leaving you breathless thanks to flashy guitar solos and head banging choruses. Elsewhere, 'Nico' slows things down a bit - a lighter in the air moment perhaps. Overall, it's an epic rock production singing all the right notes by bringing a dash of goth to classic rock.

The likes of Hawkwind's drone mix by Cherrystones, Thomas Leer's cosmic-Balearics reworked by Bullion and the post-punk dubs of The Embrace have all featured so far but finally, the percussive journey of 80s band The Impossible Dreamers arrive with their cult B-side 'Spin,' including an extended percussion-dub extravaganza and a bonus drum reprise by Dan Tyler of Idjut Boys under his NAD alias.

Review: Twenty years ago it sounded like an oddly poignant evocation of pre-millennial tension. Two decades later it stands as an eerily prescient glimpe into the technological alienation and dislocation of of a new era. Yet more importantly, OK Computer is no more or less than a sparkling, dramatic and moving collection of songs that haven't lost any of their impact in the interim. The sound of a band stubbornly refusing to follow up the stadium-strafing stylings of its predecessor The Bends - and instead bursting headlong into experimentation and wild creativity -is portrayed in still more vivid colours by the alarmingly strong collection of out-takes and B-sides collected herein, Yet there's no getting away from the chill and spark that marked out OK Computer from everything surrounding it in the post-Britpop malaise, and continues to do so in the pre-Brexit counterpart.

Review: Au Pairs imploded shortly after releasing this terrific second and last album of theirs. The Birmingham post-punk band are said to have burned the candle at both ends after the success of their debut and rushed into the studio to make this album. Despite internal disputes, the band managed to take their Gang Of Four-esque sound to new levels. They are more adventurous than on the preceding record as there's saxophone and synth, making for a more textured and layered approach than before. Lyrically, Au Pairs are one of the most important bands of their era. Shockingly avant-garde in the early 80s when it was released, they tackled sexuality and gender politics with ire and wit. The standout on this album: 'Sex Without Stress' - a brilliant lampooning of the societal pressure around sex.

Review: After three groundbreaking albums with black midi, including 2023's Hellfire, Geordie Greep has carved out time to release his debut solo project, The New Sound. This album showcases an eclectic and vibrant approach to alternative pop, granting Greep the freedom to pursue creative impulses without restraint. He reflects on this liberation, stating that without a band to answer to, he could fully explore his artistic vision. The recording process involved over thirty session musicians across Sao Paulo and London, blending diverse influences. Greep notes the spontaneity of working with local talent in Brazil, where tracks were recorded in a matter of days. Musically, The New Sound delves into themes of urban life and human experiences, juxtaposing light-hearted melodies with darker narratives. Songs like 'Holy Holy' merge indie pop with lush Latin arrangements, while 'Motorbike' features bassist Seth 'Shank' Evans in a poignant lament. Greep's ambition is evident throughout the eleven tracks, aiming to engage listeners with intricate lyrics and unexpected turns. He hints at future live performances, aiming to capture the album's dynamic spirit in various settings.

Review: "In Rainbows", Radiohead's seventh album, finally gets a physical release! It's one thing downloading this landmark album, but to actually hold this is something special. Not only do you get increased sound quality, but you also get the amazing artwork from Stanley Donwood. This album includes "Nude", a live favourite for many years that was originally written during the "OK Computer" sessions. More minimal that their "Kid A" period, "In Rainbows" does something that very few albums have done - its sound is distinct from previous Radiohead albums, but is still clearly Radiohead. Hail to the kings, they are back on top form.

Review: In 2015, Texas & London-based trio Khruangbin's debut album 'The Universe Smiles Upon You' garnered wide critical acclaim and captured attention for its seamless genre-blending and internationally shaped sound - one that evidently has deep roots in Thai-funk cassette culture. Similarly to their debut, sophomore record 'Con Todo El Mundo' is a cocktail of largely instrumental surf-rock, afro-funk, middle-eastern and far-eastern influences, mixed with warmth and soul. As if their pallette wasn't diverse enough, the additions of the pared back boogie on 'Evan Finds The Third Room', the widescreen dream-pop of 'A Hymn' and deeply intricate writing of closer 'Friday Morning', are illustrative of a band who have worked hard to broaden their horizons while keeping their roots in mind and, despite transatlantic bases, clearly remain a stunningly cohesive and well-matched outfit.

Review: This compilation serves as a sonic time capsule, collecting the raw energy and diversity a 70s scene with its roots in the UK's suburban music scene. Across three LPs, it highlights punk, post-punk, new wave and ska with an expertly curated tracklist that celebrates both iconic anthems and underground gems. Kicking off with explosive tracks like 'London Calling' and 'Blitzkrieg Bop', the first side sets the tone with pure punk energy. From the urgency of The Undertones 'Teenage Kicks' to the melancholic beauty of Joy Division's 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', it's a journey through the era's emotional spectrum. The inclusion of The Cure's 'Boys Don't Cry' and XTC's 'Making Plans For Nigel' shows the post-punk shift toward introspection and innovation. The second LP leans into eclecticism, blending punk-fueled energy to melodic classics. It captures the intersection of rebellion and refinement. Tracks like Martha And The Muffins' 'Echo Beach' and Pretenders 'Brass In Pocket' add a touch of sophistication with a broader palette of sounds. Finally, the third LP celebrates the ska revival and early synth-pop with The Specials 'Gangsters', English Beat's 'Mirror In The Bathroom' and UB40's 'Food For Thought', before transitioning into more futuristic sounds like Gary Numan's 'Are 'Friends' Electric?' and The Buggles 'Video Killed The Radio Star'. Ending with a nod to the dawn of a new musical era, this collection balances nostalgia with a depth not many others get close to.

Review: The last ten years have seen no shortage of bands with their delay pedals set to stun intent on capturing an aura of dreamlike radiance. Yet Texas 'pop-noir' troupe Cigarettes After Sex are no ordinary shoegazers, for a variety of reasons - frontman Greg Gonzalez' androgynous and dulcet tones may be part of the appeal, yet moreover it's the quality of the songwriting here, which never falls prey to the style-over-substance traps of their peers. Indeed, this debut is more than enough to justify the considerable hype around this outfit, being a collection of ditties as sultry as they are atmopsheric.

Review: South London's potent indie auteur Heartworms unveils her highly anticipated debut album here on Speedy Wunderground. It has been produced by longtime collaborator Dan Carey and fuses the driving, motorik energy of Depeche Mode with PJ Harvey's sharp lyrical prowess, and is finished off with the offbeat rhythms of dance-punk favourites LCD Soundsystem. The result is a dark, intense sonic assault that is unmistakably Heartworms in the way it blends gothic post-punk with unashamed emotion and relentless momentum. It once again proves why Heartworms is one of the most exciting new voices in alternative music.

Review: Life changed dramatically for The War On Drugs when they released Lost In The Dream in 2014. It was the Philadelphia band's big, breakthrough record, taking the band all over the world and to some of the biggest stages. Since then, their stock has only continued to rise and they've become one of the most beloved rock bands in the world. This live album was recorded on tour between February 2022 through December 2023 in America, UK, Europe and Australia. Intro 'Harmonia's Dream' is their answer to The Who's 'Baba O'Riley' and you can hear the ecstasy running the crowd. 'Come To The City' is one of band leader Adam Granduciel's best ever vocal takes. Unbelievably powerful and peerless. No War On Drugs set would be complete without 'Under The Pressure' and the ten minute-plus version here is a representation of how far they've come - not only in terms of popularity, but in terms of quality as a band. They've not rested on their laurels they've just got better and better.

Review: This was the golden age of Adam & The Ants - for one or two of the more serious-minded post-punk fans from the early 80s at the very least. A BBC Sessions album that is a tribute to the great DJ himself, John Peel who, had it not been for him, many may never had been introduced to the band. Featuring many different versions of tracks that were included on the debut Dirk Wears White Sox (released later in 1979), these tracks seem even more adrenalin-fuelled that the versions we eventually heard on the fantastic debut that for many has never been matched by anyone since. The opening two tracks, however, come from the early 1978 session that were not part of the debut and opening track 'Lou' doesn't even feature Adam Ant on lead vocals. This track was performed by the band's then manager and punk icon Jordan and sits well with the rest of this impressive collection of recordings that could be classed as Adam & The Ants part one (of three different versions). These sessions link the first two versions of the band very well and are a world apart from the commercial and more successful songs that eventually made them a household - and playground - name for the next decade and more.

Review: Matthew Murphy, Tord Overland Knudsen, and Dan Haggis deliver their sixth studio album. The latest in a surprisingly prolific list of records - starting with 2007's much hyped debut, A Guide To Love, Loss & Desperation. Over the years since, the Liverpool trio have consistently delivered the goods to sustain a loyal following, while also swerving the pitfalls of 'blowing up' only to do whatever the opposite of that is once the hysteria subsides. Blow down? Whatever the term, the truth of it is that Oh! The Ocean is The Wombats through and through - an makes no secret of that fact. But it's no simple rerun. Instead, the three-piece have emphasised their sense of humour, social commentary and escapism while simultaneously calling on the kind of riffs that evoke nostalgia for the heyday of British indie rock & roll, while embracing the anything goes doctrine that seems to be humanity's modus in 2025.

Review: A fantastic new pressing of a band who were an important part of the grebo scene in the late 80s and early 90s. Having earned a loyal fanbase with God Fodder, which is their electronically-tinged grunge and pop-punk leaning debut album, this follow-up showed them buck the trend of the difficult second album and deliver the goods. The chart-bothering single 'Not Sleeping Around' is a banger with Stone Roses-y wah guitars, an infectious vocal melody and urgent, hard-hitting rock structure. The same year this was originally released they headlined the NME stage at Glastonbury and cemented their reputation as one of the best live bands in Britain of that time.

Review: It's been a boom period for British post-punk, but with more than five years passing since the craze hit its peak, it's become easier to separate the wheat from the chaff and recognise those who are here to stay and those who had very little to sustain any interest. Squid are here to stay, having blossomed from their shouty beginning into one of the most compelling British bands of the past ten years, with genre-defying qualities and boundless creative spirit. This new album is about evil, nine stories whose protagonists reckon with cults, charisma and apathy. Real and imagined characters wading into the dark ocean between right and wrong. Recorded at Church Studios in Crouch End with Marta Salogni and Grace Banks and Dan Carey on additional production, it's a real gem with a real chance of being up for nomination at the next Mercury Prize ceremony.

Review: Rumour has it that only 15 cassette tapes were initially distributed of this rare demo collection, which earlier in 2024 was revealed to be the most expensive cassette tape ever sold on Discogs (going for a hefty $5,000), though the common consensus is that surely more exist out in the ether. Available digitally for years but now arriving on a remarkably limited run of wax, these demos also appeared on the (Like) Linus compilation CD and feature John Taylor on drums as Abe Cunningham would be in the midst of touring with his original alternative metal outfit Phallucy at the time of recording. Featuring the entire demo which pre-dates their 1995 debut Adrenaline LP, including cuts such as the aforementioned '(Like) Linus' as well as 'Hump', and 'Plastic', this expanded version also boasts early takes of album tracks like 'Engine No. 9', and 'Nosebleed', painting one of the clearest pictures of the band's nu-metal teething phase while creatively and sonically striving to push those confines in a similar manner to early material from their peers in Incubus. Funky, jagged and raw, yet already exuding that signature sultry chaotic nuance, this collection is so OG that initial copies even labelled the band as The Deftones.

Review: Originally released in 2004 and celebrating its 20th anniversary, Where You Want To Be would serve as the sophomore full-length from Amityville, New York emo/pop-punk icons in the making Taking Back Sunday. Following the rapid success of their 2002 debut LP Tell All Your Friends, John Nolan and bassist Shaun Cooper would leave the group to form Straylight Run (though they would eventually return) and be replaced by Fred Mascherino and Matt Rubano, respectively, with the pair utilising their jazz school background to help the band tighten up compositionally and attain their sought-after elevation. Working with former Husker Du soundman and producer Lou Giordano (The Goo Goo Dolls, Sunny Day Real Estate), pushed the members to embrace additional instrumentation, emblematic on the string-guided ballad 'New American Classic' while lead single 'A Decade Under The Influence' remains one of their signature cuts to this day. Retaining the gritty post-hardcore bite of their debut yet already discovering their burgeoning mainstream appeal which would take full flight on 2006's breakout album Louder Now, the legacy of the aptly titled Where You Want To Be is one of a poignant bridging point between two equally vital eras for the band.
