Review: Tender-voiced crooner James Blacke dropped this EP of cover songs back in December 2020, but in time for Record Store Day it now gets a wax reissue. Lovers of sad songs rejoined at their mopey here tackling some of these tunes from artists such as Frank Ocean, Billie Eilish, and Beyonce. "It's been a joy to discover new music and new ways of playing songs I've already heard," he said at the time and it's just as nice for us to hear him working with different than usual source material.

Review: The Black Keys are back with more of that raw, bluesy-soaked rawk they do so well. The duo of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney wrote this new album in the studio, laying down initial ideas in Nashville before expanding the sessions to include collaborators such as Billy F. Gibbons, Greg Cartwright and Angelo Petraglia. Everything you love about the 'Keys is right here, and lead single 'Wild Child' has all the hooks and ear-snagging chorus lines you could wish for, with that dirty, overdriven guitar sound that has been their calling card since they first broke through 20 years ago.

Review: Some albums deserve to stay buried, but Hydroplane's 1997 debut album is not one of those. An alternative project from shoegaze-influenced indie band The Cat's Miaow, the self-titled album offered a uniquely hazy, spaced-out blend of lo-fi dream pop vocals, atmospheric guitar textures, DJ Shadow style sample collage, stoned beats, Radoiphonic Workshop style electronic experiments and '90s ambient tropes. It's an unusual but hugely alluring musical melting pot that went largely overlooked at the time - hence this first ever vinyl pressing of the previously CD-only set. We'd recommend giving it a listen because it really is in a genre sub-category all of its own.

Review: Australian crusty indie-punks, Amyl & The Sniffers, essentially headstomped their self-titled debut with last year's blistering follow-up, 'Comfort To Me.'

Maximising every aspect of their core sound in an aggravated effort to avoid the trappings of a diluted sophomore effort, raw cuts such as 'Freaks to the Front,' 'Hertz,' and 'Maggot' seeth with an astute, intelligent, well aimed venom, while the beautifully titled 'Don't Need A Cunt (Like You to Love Me)' is an anthemic and motivating as it is violent.

In a world where punk can be proto, post, noise or art, Amyl & The Sniffers opt to be all, and none of the above, simultaneously.

Review: This sixth studio album by Arcade Fire is as anticipated as any in the seminal indie band's long career. It was produced by esteemed Radiohead associate Nigel Godrich in many different locations around the world from El Paso to New Orleans. The band say it was the longest they have ever spent writing together and is focused on the forces that threaten to pull the world apart and how we must resist. WE has a big narrative arc that makes for a real rollercoaster of seven tunes that go from light to dark and back and with plenty of joy expressed amongst the tensions.

Review: One of history's prominent art punk, post punk, experimental and alternative rock groups, at least one Wire record should sit on everyone's shelf, their richly detailed and deeply atmospheric sound helping lay foundations not just for all the outfits that have picked up the mantel and took the aforementioned styles forward, but also genres such as noise and drone. There really is just so much going on in the often chaotic crescendos and pared back moments alike.

As the title suggests, Not About To Die takes early studio demos from the crew and also correctly makes it clear that, when all these were recorded, the troupe still had decades of creative output ahead of them and weren't going anywhere. That said, by the end of the decade they would disband, before regrouping again, disbanding again, and regrouping. Those details aside, dive in and soak up the unbridled and unapologetic raw creativity at play here.

Review: You really struggle to name a better outfit than Pixies, especially when it comes to their live shows. If you've been lucky enough to catch them, memories of incredible, chaotic nights in sweat filled rooms immediately spring to mind whenever anyone even whispers their name in the close vicinity of your ears, and for very good reason.

This live album isn't really along the same lines, given it was recorded at US super-festival-cum-unofficial-influencer-conference Coachella, but the same level of energy certainly comes across (and it's also worth pointing out the event was quite a different place to be in 2004 compared with 2022). Times change, but Pixies will always know how to turn out and turn it up, here channelling the raw, alt-garage-rock roots to deliver more than 20 tracks at breakneck speed with little by way of an intermission. How it should be done.

Review: In 2010, Suzanne Nadine Vega began examining her extensive back catalogue and reappraising her work in the only way a true musical genius should - reconfiguring some of her best loved and least known tracks alike to breathe new life into them. Not that they were sounding remotely out of time or place at that point, or indeed today. Nevertheless, the venture led to the Close Up series, whereby songs were stripped of their extras and left almost-naked for fans to see.

Some of her efforts were only released digitally and as part of an extensive Close Up box set, on a bonus CD. Those Extras have finally made their way onto a standalone release, and the world is a better place for it. Featuring some of Vega's most emotive moments, for example 'Priscilla' and '99.9F', to name but two, what's here is a wonderful showcase of her eminent talent as a songwriter.

Review: Some 17 years after its original release, British Shoegaze outlet Engineers are reissuing their 2005 self-titled classic as a limited edition, high quality coloured vinyl. Featuring breakout hit 'Home' as an opening track, which would go on to be the opening to HBO's award-winning drama 'Big Love' 5 years later, replacing 'God only Knows'. A subtle and dreamy soundtrack with beachy, humming guitars, the real pearl in the Engineers oyster are the cloud-like vocals of Simon Phillips. Playing on influences from contemporaries Cocteau Twins and the afore-mentioned Beach Boys, Engineers' sound is hypnotic and feels like gravity is just letting go of you. Songs like 'Let's Just See' could be likened to that of Tame Impala, but what set Engineers apart is just how soft their approach to the sound really is. 'Said and Done' is so gentle, it's almost like it was never there as it smothers you in reverberating guitars and hushed vocals. With a slow regain in interest in the Shoegaze/ Dream Pop scene, this is a great start to your collection. It sounds just as great almost 2 decades later.

Review: Florence and the Machine's Dance Fever is the fifth studio album from the much loved indie outfit and as ever it is a broad and widely infused rock sound. From pop to baroque, prog to indie, folk, dance, industrial and even spoken word, these adventurous sounds add up to a 14 rack fairytale. Originally planned to be recorded in New York, that was scrapped because of Covid and all recording was moved to London. Lead singer Florence Welch has cited Iggy Pop as a huge influence on the record, and the title and album concept came after Welch's fascination with choreomania.

Review: The last ten years have seen no shortage of bands with their delay pedals set to stun intent on capturing an aura of dreamlike radiance. Yet Texas 'pop-noir' troupe Cigarettes After Sex are no ordinary shoegazers, for a variety of reasons - frontman Greg Gonzalez' androgynous and dulcet tones may be part of the appeal, yet moreover it's the quality of the songwriting here, which never falls prey to the style-over-substance traps of their peers. Indeed, this debut is more than enough to justify the considerable hype around this outfit, being a collection of ditties as sultry as they are atmopsheric.

Review: Like many of us, Fred Again keeps a diary. But rather than writing in a journal, pager or Notes app, his diary takes the unusual form of an intensely personal album series, 'Actual Life'. The second instillment in the series hears him once again weave through Londonized R&B, future garage and pop-electronic, charting an 8-month period looking into an intensely difficult period of his life, in which the artist was confronted with a complex case of grief.

Review: Radiate Like This is Warpaint's first album in six years. The LA four-piece have been busy since their last outing, 2016's Heads Up, but their brand of dishevelled, dusty indie-pop feels more welcome than ever. As is so often the case with music released these days, the bulk of the work on the record was created in isolation through these weird pandemic years. They also opted to hold off recording the final takes until they had a chance to tour the material, sharpening up the tracks and creating a dazzling end result which might just be the most focused material they've ever realised.

Prefaced by the buzzing lead single 'Taking Me Back', we're stoked for the promised energy of this LP, which is the first of two albums slated to hit the shelves in 2022. This LP comes in either single black, 'astro' blue, or 'glow' white versions, as well as CD for the digi-heads.

In his words, contained and condensed into the sonic foundries of this album are all the attributes of your bog-standard musician: "paranoia, vanity, egoism, selfishness, sycophancy, resentment, moral nullity and more idiot than idiot savant". This LP comes as a standard black vinyl edition, as well as a premium pink vinyl edition; the latter contains a pillbox in the sleeve, revealing a strange Braille-embossed figurine - or "little thing" - as a keepsake.

Review: Norway's latest breakout pop star Sigrid returned home to write her second album 'How To Let Go.' It comes three years after the debut that helped her make her name and features 12 tracks including the previously released songs 'Burning Bridges', 'Mirror' and 'It Gets Dark.' The whole thing was written while the artist was reflecting on life both is and away from Norway. She reports she had huge fun making the album and early singles are certainly full of that uplifting spirit as well as her catchy hooks, danceable beats and signature vocal style.

Review: Last time out, The Black Keys attempted to go back to their roots with a covers album that was noticeably fuzzier and more raw sounding than many of their sets over the last decade or so. Dropout Boogie, their latest full-length, largely takes a similar approach, albeit with original songs rather than covers. There are still outside musicians involved - their early sets were recorded with just guitar, drums and vocals - but the sound is closer to the funk-fuelled garage-rock with which they first made their name. It's an enjoyable romp all told, with strong songs, hooky choruses and rip-roaring guitar riffs to the fore. Interestingly, some of the recordings are one-take wonders, something that adds extra impetus, energy and excitement to the album.

Review: This troupe, fronted by the honeyed tones of vocalist and former child actor Jessie Rutherford, have their set their stall out with a sound that could scarcely sound more like their homeland of California - expansive, carefree and slick as always. 'Wiped Out' takes their R&B-tinged indie-pop sound, to a beachside destination where the sun-kissed retro-pop of Phoenix melds with both quasi-surf ambience and the midnight R&B of Frank Ocean to result in an atmosphere for daydreaming and nightlife alike. 'Wiped Out' may win no awards for earthiness or grit, yet these winter months seem an ideal time for such easygoing escapism.

Review: The Men They Couldn't Hang were well known in UK punk circles having formed in 1984. The band had a strong connection with The Pogues and toured with David Bowie. Silver Town is their fourth studio album and it gave rise to several singles including 'A Place in the Sun' and 'Rain Steam & Speed.' There is a distinctly British feel to the happy-go-lucky tunes, with musings on plenty of uniquely English things grooves that bring to mind a good old knees up in a barn. This 180 gram audiophile vinyl has a gatefold sleeve and is limited to 500 individually numbered copies on flaming coloured vinyl.

Review: Inspired by the slightly unlikely collision of the Thai music of the '70s and The Shadows, Khruangbin - the name means 'aeroplane' in Thailand - are purveyors of a deliriously mellow and beguiling form of jammed-out power-trio guitar music - far removed from standard notions of psych and dreampop, partly owing to its pan-global influences, its nonetheless both psychedelic and dreamy, not to mention possessed of an unhurried, reflective and spacious lilt that renders this Texan-London outfit a rare treat in an information-saturated age, taking on delicate soul and funk with exotic atmospheres and making the journey feel both blissful and effortless.

Review: Some lucky folk managed to bag a copy of this when it was released as part of the Screamadelica 30th Anniversary 12" Singles Box. Suffice to say, many didn't. It's also probably a given to point out the British and global music scenes are still reeling from the untimely and sudden passing of Andrew Weatherall, a studio mastermind and club DJ icon who managed to influence everyone from ambient and techno heads to indie kids, classical fans and heads in just about any other sonic avenue you care to mention. Arguably, though, his most beloved work was around the Screamadelica era, carving out a landmark crossover album from Primal Scream's original material, making stars out of everyone involved and timeless, decade-spanning tracks from singles like 'Come Together' and 'Loaded'. 'Shine Like the Stars' brought that album to a close in spectacular, trippy, emotive style, and has never left our hearts since.

As many music lovers know, white often the flip side jams are the best on any record, even if you don't know it at first . As well as the b-side besties and fan favourites like 'Suede', 'Dog Man Star' and 'Coming Up' are 'Europe Is Our Playground', 'My Insatiable One', and 'Killing Of A Flashboy' amongst others.

Review: After two years of anxiety and uncertainty, we all have some processing to do right now. In many ways, vast chunks of We've Been Going About This All Wrong represents Sharon Van Etten doing just that, or at least preparing herself, and her family, for the inevitable jumping back on the merry-go-round of life, and specifically life in the music industry. The US singer-songwriter, who has, with enviable passion and determination, carved out a place for herself in the upper echelons of American pop-rock talent, admitted to littering this latest, and typically commanding and spectacular record, with messages to her son at a time when tours once again beckon and threaten to upend an extended period of close intimacy in lockdowns. That point aside, this is classic Van Etten - vocals approaching operatic, huge, sweeping contemporary symphonies going straight for the heart and celluloid soundtrack.

Review: It's pretty hard for people who bought a copy of Nevermind in 1991 to articulate to those only just discovering this seminal slice of perfection just how important it was as a record. Two years after the Seattle outfit helped guide rock 'n' roll in a completely different trajectory with debut record Bleach, they returned to unleash arguably the most significant album in the history of grunge.

At once angry, downtrodden, poetic, hopeful, disenfranchised, frustrated and filled with freshness, while major hit singles like 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and 'Come As You Are' have remained household tracks and rightly so, diving back into the blue waters of this staggering work really makes you realise how deep the quality goes. From the ferocity of 'Territorial Pissings' to the sedated heartbreak of 'Polly'.

Review: The Goa Express are bright young hopefuls in the arena of bombastic British indie pop. Following in the footsteps of Coldplay, Keane et al, these lads from Manchester have a sound which is made for radio play and massive stages - they're destined to be huge. Following up their Second Time single for Ra-Ra-Rok Records, they're back with this new song which plays out like a rallying call for unity in a distinctly un-united world. 'Everybody In The UK' has soaring choruses and a bright, hopeful sound which will surely send the band further down the road to stardom.
