Review: Alesia Cosmos were a collective of musicians led by Bruno de Chenerilles (and several other collaborators) formed in the early '80s in Strasbourg. Under the influence of William Burroughs, John Cage, Pierre Henry and others, de Chenerilles developed tape music. By 1982, he appeared for the first time under the name Alesia Cosmos Furi Show. This experimental show led to a music project based on his and close collaborator Pascal Holtzer's compositions, performed with other musicians in the beginning of 1983. The Exclusivo! LP was the group's debut album recorded and was self-released in 1983. de Chenerilles and Holtzer's improvisations with the group brought forth more ideas and the album was recorded in a few days. The result was a mixing of electronic music, field recordings, North African and Asian percussion, electric guitars and voices, compositions and free improvisations. All four musicians took turns singing onomatopoeic phrases and backing vocals, even sometimes in an unknown language, a sort of mixed bag between Breton and Japanese.

Tracks Volume 1 (limited blood red transparent vinyl 12" reeditado)
Cat: CITI 017. Rel: 27 Nov 17
  1. Amato - "Physique" (5:13)
  2. Tzusing - "King Of System" (5:06)
  3. An-I - "Mutter" (6:00)
  4. Broken English Club - "Glass" (5:28)
Review: There's a delightfully celebratory feel about this debut volume of Cititrax Tracks, a new 12" series from Minimal Wave offshoot Cititrax. As beautifully presented as we've come to expect, Tracks Volume 1 boasts a quartet of dancefloor-ready smashers from a blend of new faces and label stalwarts. Amato (aka The Hacker) kicks things off with the glistening EBM funk of "Physique" - all restless synth refrains and pounding bottom end - before LIES affiliate Tsuzing go all dark, psychedelic and twisted on the thrillingly intense, acid-flecked "King of System". An-I go all DAF (with a touch of Front 242) on the fuzzy and dystopian stomper "Mutter", before Cititrax regulars Broken English Club delivers a storming chunk of industrial-tinged analogue funk ("Glass"). Bravo!

Review: Kris Baha is fast becoming one of the most essential operators in the deviant disco underbelly of Berlin's scene, despite having landed in the city relatively recently. Baha's credentials with labels like Power Station and parties in Melbourne are all that you need to know, and now this release on the ever mighty Cocktail d'Amore seals the deal. Baha has never sounded more confident, pinging deviant synths around nasty drum bite and channeling the gods of industrial darkness to make some rugged body music for the darker kind of dancefloor. The experimental, non-party tracks are just as wild, dealing in all manner of uncompromising noise to further Baha's journey to the upper realms of sonic mud slingers.

Review: Whatever Makes You Feel Safe is a collaboration between Canadian producer and singer Marie Davidson and Berlin based Ukrainian sound designer Invisible Church. They met in Montreal during Red Bull Music Academy festival and shared the idea of exploring the concept of feeling safe both on a personal level and as a part of society. Quite different from what you'd usually associate with Davidson but still worthy of your attention all the same. Beginning on the A side with "Collage" featuring some chilling drone experiments over textural sound design and field recordings which allow Davidson's haunting vocals to carry the track further into the void. Sounds like a cross between OAKE and Lustmord. Next up "Never Release The Tension" delves further into pitch black territory on this contorted downbeat industrial thriller. Finally on the flip, we've got an epic 10 minutes of haunting esoterica in the form of "Ten Years" and features Theo Parrish on cymbals! The label recommends it as for fans the late Mika Vainio, Black Rain, CTI, and the Bladerunner OST. Pretty on point, if we do say so ourselves!

Review: Diagonal boss Powell designed the New Beta series as a kind of re-set: an opportunity to go back go basics and make music differently. The first release in the series, which landed earlier this year, was certainly a stripped-back affair, notably free of many of the stylistic flourishes we've come to expect. This follow-up is similarly inclined and sees the lauded producer saunter through tracks that variously doff a cap to weird ambient, bubbly modular electronica, surging, sample-laden post-punk workouts (see "Rudeboy, Let's Funk"), mentalist fusions of jungle and synth-wave ("Drums VIP"), intergalactic noise and tracks that defy easy categorization. There are a few impressively melodious moments dotted throughout, with the colourful "Strobe" standing out.

  4. Roe Deers - "Nirvana" (5:50)

Review: And just like that, France's Kump label is born. The newly formed crew make for some pretty promising prospects if this debut EP is anything to go by, and they've started flying off our shelves with the same sort of zesty energy found across its five killers! Thankfully, this isn't yet another deep house joint and, one the contrary, it provides us with some seriously fresh strains of house music built for the next decade. Ricco's opener "Gilbert & George" is a punchy, mid-tempo pulser with a subtly acidic flow, and Pletnev's "Thunder" follows beautifully with the same sort of beat, but comparatively tamer harmonies. On the flip, Ju-Ju83 gets all sombre and industrial on "Untimely End", while "Nirvana" by Roe Deers offers a totally different sort of 'sad', and Markus Gibbs's "Dernier Souffle" manages to blend mid-90's acid with something that, well, we can't quite put our finger on...

  4. Pankow - "I’m Food For You"
  5. Perseus Traxx - "Get Away"
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Parrish Smith's debut of dystopic forbidding sets the tone of this label's impressive first release with a superb stark, acid ridden slab of body music. Helena Hauff adds to the proceedings with her remix of Pankow's"Das Vodkalied" taking no prisoners and using heavy percussion in contrast to a wonderfully tense set of arpeggiations, which all descend into skull crushing pressure. Carrying over to the flip side are Pankow, pioneers of the Italian Industrial/EBM scene, with two tracks from their legendary first tape "Throw Out Rite" from 1983. With "Das Vodkalied" disembodied vocals are cut up and come from every direction driven by a raw, off-kilter energy and pounding beat. "I'm Food For You" cranks up the drive and anxiety to create a killer track based around stark arpeggiation. Last of all, Perseus Traxx provides an acidic stripped down venting of frustrations which he spits out with vehemence.

Review: Strahinja Arbutina is fast becoming one of those artists you need to keep your eye on. With his first vinyl release on New York's industrial label Bank last year, he has no issue with making your ears bleed. Here he dons 4 tracks for Vivod and they're all brutal. First off is Way Ahead, straight up 4/4 industrial techno. A2 is the aptly named Croatian Households, more of a broken piece but still haunting in its rhythmic neg dynamics. B1 is Labud Loop, probably the most accessible track of the 4 as it's nearer to straight up techno, fans of Levon Vincent will like. Closing the ep is K stands For... with a slow burning break beat and vocals screaming incomprehensibly, awesome track, awesome ep. This is the hardest one for Vivod so far surely!

Review: Considering the wild, untamed nature of releases on Contort Yourself to date, the premise of this compilation is a tantalizing prospect. Digging deep into the underbelly of 1980s minimal wave, industrial and much more fringe activity besides, this extensive collection is not for the faint hearted. There are moments of beauty, moments of horror and plenty of just plain weird transmissions that evoke the era they came from so powerfully. Doxa Sinistra, Human Flesh and an early outing by Merzbow are all standouts in what is a truly wonderful document of a fearless time in genuinely underground music.

Review: Fair enough, you might not have expected Beau Wanzer on Jealous God, but you sure have him now! While the US producer's particular brand of techno might be a little rawer than some of the label's previous outings, his sense of comical dread makes for the perfect catalogue addition. This is Wanzer's first LP outside of his own label, and it is perhaps the artist's most diverse and accomplished piece of rotter-techno just yet! Each track has his own devious vocals at the core, shape-shifting like demons on crack across both "Speaker Sisters" and "Kipper Hunks". "He Pushes Meals" offers a dystopian vision of techno, all sleepy and acid-flavoured, "while Shitty Cough 17" unleashes one of the most noxious, deranged blizzards of bass that we've heard all year, followed sublimely by the off-kilter shrieks and twists of "In One Ear" and "Cave Mace". Highly recommended.
