Review: Unusual Systems returns with their seventh release, a 12" single with sides shared between pushers Corp and Cavalry Stone. Traversing the wastes of bolshy Italo and new beat, and lending both an apocalyptic flair, opener 'The End Of The Days' seems to sonically describe as much through its use of massive gate-snares, janky ascendant riffs and trancelike string-n-stab breakdowns. The Bside is brought up rawly and raggedly by Spanish duo Cavalry Stone, who match the A's eerie melodic aura with a similarly strange lo-fi electro cut, sounding originally bound for cassette.

Review: The cult favourite Dark Entries hits 15 in style here and celebrates in the only way it knows how - with more great music. This time it is the legendary synth-punk yahoos Crash Course in Science aka Dale Feliciello, Mallory Yago, and Michael Zodorozny who are in the spotlight. The group formed back in 1979 and set out to make music using toy instruments and kitchen appliances. Their punk-y, aggressive, angular sound soon found a hardcore fan base and gave rise to big tunes like 'Cardboard Lamb' and 'Flying Turns.' In 1981 they recorded Near Marineland, a full-length that never actually saw the light of day but does now and shows the band moving into more diverse and polished territory.

Song To Noise (version) (9:02)
Review: There's more to song titles like 'Song to Noise' and 'A Siren Is A Simple Device' than meets the eye here. The former is a lyrical declaration for the power and beauty of noise, cacophonies as art, walls of sound as things of real intellectual might. The latter paying homage to how much emotion can be felt in the most mundane refrains and vibrations in the air. Setting a precedent for the album as a whole, analogue sound researchers Driftmachine - AKA Andreas Gerth and Florian Zimmer - team up with word and sound artist Andreas Ammer, known for his work with Acid Pauli, to create something that plays with and changes our perceptions of what noise is, what it can be, and what it might be used for. An academic exercise, the results are surprisingly inviting and accessible.

Review: "Eclectic digital dub" are the words Digital Sting use to describe the latest from Feel Free Hi Fi. Given Feel Free Hi Fi also run the label, we can take the phrasing as gospel. A few minutes into 'Blood' and you'll be short of any evidence to suggest otherwise, too. Bringing together the timbres, aesthetics and tones that have defined their preceding short form and extended play output, this is a debut album which defines the idea of an amalgamation of sounds. Drawing on their own experimentations, but also a multitude of canons and sub genres, industrial meets weirdo dancehall, meets broken techno, meets spacey stepping beats, meets frog sounds, and then some more. Cinematic, au naturel, yet also born from machines as much as Mother Earth, if you're not hearing this come 10am at one free party this year we'll eat our steel-toed hemp shoes.

Review: Fans of Chrome guitarist and "demented genius" Helios Creed have long since been calling for a reissue of his cult solo album Cosmic Assault. It came first in 1995 and now gets that deserving treatment with its first-ever vinyl pressing almost 30 years after its initial release in 1995. The record found the guitar maestro leaning on an electro-industrial style reminiscent of the albums he would go on to serve up later on in his career, though it still maintains plenty of his signature psychedelic noise. This reissue includes all new artwork.

Review: Oakland, CA trio Houses Of Heaven draw on elements of industrial pop, post-punk, electro and experimental on their latest full-length Within/Without, their second LP for label Felte. Channelling the production prowess of Matia Simovich (INHALT) - and featuring top-of-their-game guest vocals from Douglas McCarthy (Nitzer Ebb) and Mariana SaldaNa (BOAN) - Within/Without marks a turn away from the dub-infused movements of their prior 2020 Silent Places, going full-on weighty and noir cyberpunk, but with an extra ear for texture that most other releases operating in said style cannot claim to match. Opener 'Strange Temptation' prefers its shutdown Reeses and crunching arp sequences, while mid-record peaktimer 'Deserve' proves itself unafraid of rapturous verbs and washes; the lust could go on, but all tracks here have a remarkable ability to both strike fear into the hearts of us puny humans and simultaneously make us prance.

Review: Los Angeles based industrial, EBM and synth producer Kontravoid is garnering a strong following due to his talented blend of darker electronics and the Toronto-based electronic label Artoffact Records is the perfect imprint to pick up the burgeoning artist. Detachment is the third full length album from Kontravoid, with the first view of it coming in the form of 'For What It Is', a powerful, anthemic and driving track featuring cues from techno and industrial equally, Kontravoid makes tracks that supersede any subgenres being more compared to groundbreaking 80s acts like Nitzer Ebb or Neon Judgement.

Review: Laibach's Opus Dei is the band's third LP, originally released in 1987, offering the Slovenian band's unique blend of uplifting yet disturbing melodies. An essential release from one of industrial music's most important bands, amoing its highlights are two German language covers of their breakthrough hit - a cover of Eurotrash one hit wonder 'Live Is Life' by Opus - and a simialrly Teutonic version of 'Birth Of A Nation' by Queen. Terrifying, enthralling, disturbing and exhilarating - Laibach are all these things and this is a slice of them at their very best.

Review: Mute Records presents a newly reissued and remastered edition of Laibach's classic 1987 album, Opus Dei. This time coming to a black vinyl and CD box set, the album is renowned for its bringing Laibach to a wide audience; without the album's early successes, this pioneering industrial, neo-classical rock outfit might've never broken from their native Slovenia. With their unique interpretations of Opus' 'Live is Life' and Queen's 'One Vision' and produced by Rico Conning, the album still bears the torch of one of Mute's most eclectic yet captivating albums.

Review: It always feels a bit scary hitting play on a Merzbow release. And we mean that in the best possible way, of course. That sense of caution and stepping into the unknown is particularly heightened when dealing with brand new work from the master of noise and abrasive sound. Here debuting on the equally infallible and wildly exploratory Modern Obscure Music, the man like Masami Akita has more than delivered. One of the most respected artists working with intimidatingly-sized walls of distortion, reverberation, and refrain, when he's not writing words or campaigning for animal rights, two tracks here - or, more accurately, two parts of a whole - are thick enough to lose yourself in, like the sounds you might hear stepping through the portal into another dimension. Disorientating and, in many ways, not of this place.

Review: Newly discovered, vintage live recordings from one of the greatest industrial bands of all time,
Ministry's Ultimate Rarest Trax! 1981-1986 is an offer that will be impossible to turn down for many fans, while newcomers will find this an eye-opening introduction to a band many people have either misunderstood or failed to explore because of misconceptions. Often categorised as metal, those expecting the overblown or frenzied will be surprised here. Instead, this collection of raw demos, concert takes, and alternative mixes showcases the dexterity and vision of the group. At times closer to post-punk and New Wave than anything else, the work is as technically outstanding as it is musically brave, at various points nodding to greats like The Cure, Taking Heads, and ACR, to name but three. You get the point.

Review: Reissued via French label Rotorelief on its 35th Anniversary year, Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella is the debut album of trailblazing noise and avant-garde musician Steven Stapleton. Catapulting Stapleton's macabre alias to success in the thin breath of just three through-composed drone pieces, this sonic statement was unparalleled at the time (1979), with its unusual mix of prepared tinkerings, feedback drones and cog-jams famously causing Sounds magazine to momentarily abandon their five-star rating system to specially award the album five full question marks. Absurdly sadistic, the album is also known for its original publication of the infamous Nurse With Wound List in the liner notes, which listed the entirety of Stapleton's influences going into the album's making - some acts named therein were so obscure that many fans speculate as to whether they were invented. An exemplary work of outsider music - or at least, one that is infamous by proxy to the more baneful works of the outsider music archetype - get ready to hear all things spectral over the more sustained tones: chains rattling, chairs squeaking, shakers shaking, even monologues in French.

Review: As in Dante's Inferno, there are many layers to Paris' dance music underground; and we think it's safe to say that the independent electronica label MAHRES is not among its surface echelons. Spanning industrial, synth, techno and breakcore, MAHRES' sensibility is devilish and collective, preferring the mode of V/A EP, in true fealty to the breakcore releasers of yore. Their latest, 'Serpent a Plumes', nominally describes the feathered serpent - the worst in the bestiary - and hears producers Sektor, U-Died, C.ru.z and Human_Aventura team up for a sonic recapturing of the beast caught on Tascam. Spy-thriller guitar stabs abound on 'Last Stand'; muddied, brash chiptune abrades the ears on 'Playa Rock'; cascading claps and claves clatter around on 'Soul Punisher'; grave sawtooths and crude melodies on 'Nuevo Orden'. All huge electro portenders of a serpentine end of the world.

Review: You could probably buy every Soul Jazz compilation known to humankind and come out on top of most other people's record collections. As a label, the crew's ability to track down, rediscover, unearth, and reappraise archive music, and package things up as part of a spellbinding collection of like sounds, is remarkable, and the imprint must be up there with the best curated on the planet. The output is so good, in fact, that here we are pushing a reissue of the 2002 compilation, In The Beginning There Was Rhythm. Pieced together by Stuart Baker and Adrian Self, it's a wonderful trip into the deceptively varied world of UK post punk during its nascent, formative years. Informed by dub, psychedelia, punk, synth, samples and more, it's a celebration of a genre that proves you could spend all day listening and not really hear the same type of tune twice.

Silverbeam - "Where The Streets Have No Name" (feat Ann Louise) (3:22)
Review: On this unique compilation, various artists pay homage to the iconic Irish rock band U2, reimagining their timeless classics and turning them into their own., from the dreamy ethereal sounds of Heaven 17's 'With or Without You' to the pulsating electronica industrialism of Front Line Assembly. The Mission UK's haunting rendition of 'All I Want Is You' evokes a profound sense of longing and despair, while The Electric Hellfire Club's industrial-infused 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' captures the raw energy and political urgency of the original. Rosetta Stone's ethereal 'October' provides a meditative interlude, and Die Krupps' throbbing dance interpretation of 'Numb' adds a sinister edge to U2's dance track. The album culminates with Silverbeam's soaring anthem 'Where The Streets Have No Name' featuring Ann Louise, a fitting tribute to the band's enduring impact on the global music scene. Tribute albums rarely shine as bright as this one does.

Review: When it first appeared in stores back in 2001, Soul Jazz's In The Beginning There Was Rhythm was one of the first compilations to explore the UK post-punk scene of the late 70s and early 80s, highlighting not only the politics and energy inspiring the music, but also the enormous influence of black American dance music and Jamaican soundsystem culture. Now fully remastered and available again after two decades, the collection offers a thrill-a-minute ride taking in the freewheeling dancefloor energy of 23 Skidoo, the concrete-clad industrial funk of Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle, the insatiable Mancunian funkiness of A Certain Ratio, the low-slung experimentalism of the Slits and the Pop Group, and the synth-pop futurism of Human League (via their exceptional early single, 'Being Boiled').

Review: It's not easy trying to pin down Yoshi, a band that sound as wildly different and off-centre as the lack of information surrounding them would have you hoping for. We do know that parts of A Sunny Place for Shady People seems to have been forged in the black rain that pounds down on the roofs of Tokyo synth factories, but those neon hues are really just part of the story. Clearly inspired, at least in part, by the legendary Ryuichi Sakamoto and other Japanese digital pop moguls, A Sunny Place is as exploratory and avant garde as it is universal, and steeped in a kind of authenticity that means it could quite possibly have been made at any point since the mid-1980s. A noteworthy achievement and a fantastic, instantly replay-able album.
