  1. African Spirits (7:33)
  2. New World Shuffle (feat Bridgette Amofah) (7:50)
Review: Last spotted on wax together 16 years ago on New Standards, Italian kindred spirits and diggers Conte and Petrella collide once again. A culmination of many records savoured and ideas shared between the two friends, this 12" is long overdue and fizzes with fusion. "African Spirit" is focused on a rolling tribal MAW style house rhythm with Gianluca adding his signature trombone with staccato finesse while "New World Shuffle" is a much dreamier, smoky affair that sounds perfect any time between sunset and sunrise. Spiritual.

  1. Quantic presents Flowering Inferno - "Cumbia Sobre El Mar" (feat Nidia Gongora - El Buho remix) (5:11)
  2. Nickodemus, The Spy From Cairo & Gitkin - "Inmortales (Body Move)" (feat Femina - El Buho remix) (5:22)
Review: Following El Buho's "Tributaries" remix album, Wonderwheel offer up this choice 7" featuring two distinct cuts not found on the main record. First up is El Buho's take on grand master Quantic, working with the storied producer's considerable knowledge of Latin music to create a remix of "Cumbia Sobre El Mar" already well loved on globally minded dancefloors. On the flip comes the never before released El Buho version of Nickodemus and Femina's "Inmortales" - a fierce, drum-tastic version to get bodies shaking down.

  1. Drums & Steel Song (5:01)
  2. Sunshine Steel (4:50)
Review: Way back in 1980 Montego Bay outfit The Golden Sunshine Steel Drum Band self-released their sole, self-titled album, a fine fusion of steel pan music and reggae that has long been a collector's item. For those without funds to buy an original copy of that LP (second-hand ones go for big sums these days), we'd suggest picking up this tidy seven-inch single featuring two of its most celebratory moments. A-side "Drum & Steel Song" is superb, with the band layering hand percussion and ear-catching steel pan melodies atop a sturdy, dub-wise reggae groove. "Sunshine Steel" explores similar sonic territory and more than lives up to the promise of its title.

Baila Chibiquiban (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: MSR 019. Rel: 21 May 20
  1. Baila Chibiquiban (3:08)
  2. Baila Chibiquiban (Tonton Boom edit) (4:15)
Review: Late last month, Matasuna Records successfully mined "Ritual", the sought-after 1971 album by Nico Gomez and his Afro-Percussion Inc (a studio combo helmed by Belgian composer Joseph van het Groenewoud), and reissued one of the standout tracks, "Lupita". Here they serve up another gem from the album, "Baila Chibiquiban", an Incredible Bongo Band-esque fusion of psychedelic rock, heavy funk and even heavier Afro-Cuban percussion. The fine original version is given the re-edit treatment on the flip, with Tonton Boom extending some percussive passages and emphasizing the killer groove before introducing some of the track's headier musical elements. It's the kind of rework that should find favour with proper break-dancers.

Lupita (reissue) (7" reeditado) (1 per customer)
Cat: MSR 018. Rel: 10 Jul 20
  1. Lupita (3:36)
  2. Lupita (Bosq rework) (4:24)
Review: Those who love classic Afro-Latin music should already know "Lupita", one of the standout tunes from the sole 1971 album by Belgian composer Nico Gomez (real name Joseph van het Groenewoud) and his Afro-Percussion Inc backing band. That album was reissued a few years back by Mr Bongo; here 'Lupita' is given a rare airing on 7" single by Matasuna. This time round, the deliciously percussive mambo workout - all punchy horns, wild organs and vocal breakdowns - comes backed by a fresh remix courtesy of Bosq. This version is arguably even better, with Bosq wisely choosing to focus on the drums, horns, bass and organs for added dancefloor pleasure.

  1. Jewels (part 1) (4:28)
  2. Jewels (part 2) (4:40)
Review: To mark the label's 50th release, the team behind Names You Can Trust has snagged a fresh cut from the band that started it all back in 2007, Greenwood Rhythm Coalition. Fittingly, it also happens to the Afro-Caribbean-Latin-Funk fusionists' first single of any sort for nigh on five years. "Jewels" is delightfully hard to pigeonhole: a suitably tropical excursion that giddily melds elements of tropical disco, dub, cumbia, funk, soul and Afrobeat into something warm, addictive and floor-friendly. It's lopped into two parts on this seven-inch release, with the second being notably more percussive and heavy than the already weighty A-side.

  1. Time Factor
  2. You Are The One
Review: A bona fide Afro funk legend, Tony Grey cut his teeth in Nigeria as a James Brown impersonator before establishing pacts with his backing band The Black 7 who later morphed into the Ozimba Messengers. Their album The Message was released in 1981 and gave us both of these outrageously funky jams. "Time Factor" is undiluted disco complete with cool pops and whistles that Dave Lee has been championing for 30 years. "You Are The One" shows more of its Nigerian heartbeat amidst the tight horns and Tony's emphatic vocal delivery. Complete with a poster, this is a really special reissue.

  1. Everything You Do, You Do For Yourself (4:27)
  2. Estre (feat Florence Adooni) (5:02)
Review: Philophon is a Berlin-based label run by Max Weissenfeldt. Part of Philophon is the Tonstudio Bluetenring in Kreuzberg, operated by Benjamin 'Stibbo' Spitzmueller. The label's essential motivation is to support any form of local culture with reason, freedom and ludic drive. North-Ghanaian singer Guy One presents his first international release here. He promises what his name is saying: he is the number one artist of Frafra music, named after his people. "Everything You Do, You Do For Yourself" is a driving Highlife rhythm and his only song having a phrase in English. "Estre" features one of the leading voices of Frafra-Gospel named Florence Adooni. She interweaves perfectly with the horn arrangements by Weissenfeldt and the drummer. Washington's Hailu Mergia, San Francisco's Idris Ackamoor and the Pyramids and the legendary Scandinavian producer Jimi Tenor have also released on the label over the last year too.

  2. Tinoge Ya Ta'a Ba (part 2) (2:45)
Review: Following their surprise reunion and Strut-release album We Be All Africans last year, Idris and The Pyramids return... This time on Max Weissenfeldt's Philophon imprint. Laying down a spiritual arrangement so frenetic and full of its own life it takes up two parts, Idris's sax plays duet with Philophon's own vocalist Guy One. Gutsy, raw and full of surprises, it's another out-of-body experience from the longstanding jazz troupe.

  1. Airto Moreira - "Celebration Suite" (4:22)
  2. Gilberto Gil - "Maracatu Atomico" (4:22)
Review: Timed to coincide with the upcoming 2016 Olympics in Rio, the $tateside label comes through with a 7"-shaped celebration of Brazilian music featuring two classic cuts from the archives of Airto Moreira and Gilberto Gil. Even if you don't know it by name, Moreira's "Celebration Suite" should be instantly familiar, a jazz-fusion/samba batucada anthem that truly lives up its joyous name!! Flip it over and Gilberto Gil is on hand for a more mellow accompaniment in the shape of bossa samba standard "Maracatu Atomico," lifted from his 1975 album Viramundo. Comes as a yellow and green samba seven special!

  2. Aha Yazine Kaymaltou (7:17)
  3. Hyatti (8:04)
  4. Yogi Yamahssar (4:33)
Review: Soundway's latest cross-cultural missive is the result of a one-off 2018 studio session in Marrakech involving Belgrade-based Tapan - an act known for pushing a particularly dystopian take on techno and industrial music - and "electrified desert blues" group Generation Taragalte. It would be fair to say that the resultant music is thrillingly unique. Opener "Jbit Aala Khiam" is particularly impressive, with Generation Taragalte's psychedelic guitars, vocals and percussion rising above Tapan's pulsing, droning electronics over 11 mesmerising minutes. The squally saxophones, up-tempo rhythms, moody aural textures and chanted vocals of "Aha Yazine Kaymaltou" also make a big impression, as does the spaced-out Saharan psychedelia of "Hyatti". If it's fiendish fuzziness you're after, the EP's closing cut has that covered, too.

Chi Chi Mentira (7" + postcards)
Cat: DSC 001. Rel: 05 May 20
  1. Via Libre - "Chi Chi "Mentira"" (3:42)
  2. Grupo Amigos - "La Gir Del Diablo" (3:25)
Review: The debut release from the freshly-minted Discodelic label offers up two exceedingly rare - and rather fine - "funky Latin" cover versions from the glory years of hallucinatory funk and soul. Side A sports Via Libre's flash-fried samba-funk cover of Marcos Valle's "Chi Chi Mentira", a heady re-imagination rich in Hammond organ stabs, undulating Latin percussion, groovy bass and a percussive middle section just tailor-made for DJs who like doubling up breaks. Over on the fiip you'll find something even heavier: Grupo Amigos' celebratory, organ-heavy funk-rock take on Trio Ternura's "La Gir Del Diablo", a song that was later famously turned into an international hit by Astrud Gilberto as "Black Magic (A Gira)".

  4. Utena Kobayashi Group - ""8, 9, 10" & "9, 10, 11'" (interpretation) (11:29)
Review: Here's something rather unusual: a reissue of two tracks from experimental New Zealand outfit From Scratch's 1983 12" 3 Pieces From Gung Ho 1,2,3D, plus a trio of contemporary translations. On the A-side of record one you'll find two of From Scratch's eccentric originals, which were created using "tuned PVC pipes, drums, chimes" and "whizzer drone" (nope, we've no idea either). Fundamentally, these are loose, languid, tribal-inspired percussion works created using custom-made instruments. It's perhaps fitting that one of the standout interpretations comes from percussion-obsessed, polyrhythmic techno specialist Don't DJ. His epic, hypnotic and trippy version is joined by a woozy cover from Japan's Goat and a drowsy, heavily electronic, ambient influenced translation by the Utena Kobayashi Group.

Review: The team behind Tropical Diaspora Records recently described this album as "representing everything the label stands for". It comes from Renato Gama, an artist from the outer fringes of Sao Paolo who underpins socially conscious and hard-hitting lyrics with expressive and infectious music. "Olhos Negros Vivo" is naturally sunny and ear-catching affair, mixing tracks that mine Brazil's jazz-funk history (think Azymuth in particular), with forays into samba-jazz and smoother, more downtempo excursions. The musicianship is brilliant, the production sympathetic (it's almost like being in the room with Gama and his band) and the vocals hugely evocative.

Review: According to the dusty-fingered diggers behind Bongo Joe Disques, General Franco Lee Ezute is the "aficionado's choice" when it comes to the "Anioma sound", a variant on the Igbo highlife style that was popular in Nigeria during the 1970s and '80s. If you are unsure what the style sounds like, we'd recommend checking this reissue of "Onye Kata Obia", an obscure, four-track release from the musician and his backing band, Harmony International, that was most likely recorded around the turn of the '80s. Full of glistening guitars, heartfelt vocals and insatiable, dancefloor-friendly rhythms, it's one of the most joyous and sun-soaked records you're ever likely to hear.
