Review: Icon of Angolan music Bonga is on first-name terms with the stars and has given true meaning to the concept of 'Africanness'. He belongs to that caste of African singers who have sublimated their roots. His rasping, powerful voice is immediately identifiable and anyone listening to his music remains entranced from start to finish. In the mid '60s,, Bonga's athletic talents took him to Portugal where, ironically, he became a champion under his birth name while playing an active part in the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola. When the Salazar regime finally realised he was playing a double game, he managed to escape and went into exile in The Netherlands. There, in 1972, he recorded a harrowing first album soberly entitled Angola 72, with Cape Verdean musicians for the Dutch label Morabeza - today available on Lusafrica. This key record became something of a soundtrack for Angola's struggle for independence.

Review: Jose Adelino Barcelo de Carvalho, better known as Bonga, has released countless albums since making his debut in 1972, but few are quite as sought after as Angola 74. Released in 1974 (hence the imaginative title), it sees him fuse traditional Angolan instrumentation with the rhythms and sounds of Brazil (and samba, in particular). It's a brilliantly hot and humid fusion that works magnificently throughout, from the impassioned vocals, strummed samba guitars and rich bass of "Kubangela" to the dancing horns and fluttering flutes of "Roots". And that's just side one. The album's genius lies not only in Bonga's fusion of different musical cultures, but also in the combination of both up-tempo and down-tempo offerings.

  2. Rapso Space Dub (3:54)
  3. Crucial Decision ('92 version) (5:13)
  4. Nation Time (4:35)
Review: In the early 1970s, a new musical art form emerged on the streets of Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago from the social unrest of the time. A group of young guys started to combine poetry with drumming and created the musical art form that is known today as Rapso. Lutalo 'Brother Resistance' Masimba was one of the pioneers of this movement and his 1987 anthem "Tonight Is de Night" receives a much-needed reissue here on Cree. There's much to enjoy on this 12" - we're particularly loving the groovy "Rapso Space Dub" and funky steel drum riddims of "Crucial Decision ('92 Version)". This is total spiritual life music.

Monsieur Business (7" reeditado)
Cat: PEPITE 06. Rel: 22 Jun 20
  1. Monsieur Business (3:04)
  2. Monsieur Business (Aroop Roy rework) (4:17)
Review: In 1976, French band Edition Speciale released their debut album, "Allee Des Tilleuls". While much of the album saw them explore progressive rock and jazz-rock territory, it did contain one suitably groovy and life-affirming trip into jazz-funk territory, surprise LP standout "Mr Business". Here that cut gets a single release for the very first time courtesy of the dusty-fingered diggers at Pepite. You'll find the little-known band's languid, Clavinet and synthesizer-heavy original version on side A, with Aroop Roy's tidy contemporary rework on the B. Aroop sticks a rocket up the track's bottom end, underpinning the original song with peak-time-ready drums while wisely emphasizing his own killer bassline and catchy vocals.

Scarface (7")
Cat: SG 055. Rel: 04 Apr 18
  1. Scarface (6:40)
  2. This Day (5:28)
Review: Four years on from their last outing, Japan's premier neo-Afrobeat band returns to the warm embrace of Soul Garden Records. A-side "Scarface" is arguably one of the band's most addictive and ear-pleasing tracks yet; a rousing Afrobeat workout that sees band members trading solos over a densely percussive, Fela Kuti style workout. In a bid to let us have a bit of a breather, flipside "This Day" is a more languid and laidback affair, with drunken trumpet solos and jammed-out keys relaxing over a shuffling, Afro-Latin groove. As ever, the playing is immaculate and the production authentically fuzzy. Worth a listen.

  10. Eu Sou Mais Eu (3:02)
Review: For Brazilian music collectors, the two 1970s albums by sadly departed vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Ana Mazzotti have long been must-have sets. Listening to Far Out's new reissue of the second of those, 1977's self-titled "Ana Mazzotti", it's easy to see why. The album is warm, woozy and groovy, joining the dots between slick and summery samba-jazz, synthesizer-laden bossa-nova, Azymuth style jazz-funk/fusion (see the delicious and laidback "Sou") and the kind of atmospheric, otherworldly deepness rarely heard in Brazilian popular music during that period. Highlights are plentiful throughout, with "Cordao", the spacey and up-tempo "Eta Samba Bom" and languid "Bairro Negro" among the many standout tracks.

  11. End Of Guerrilla (3:52)
Review: From Angola via Belgium and Manchester, Nazar follows 2018's Hyperdub rough kuduro debut "Enclave" with this immense multi-faceted body of work that analyses the Angolan war of independence, its atrocities and effects on its displaced people and his family. From the portrait on the cover of his rebel general father to many of the samples and stories, Nazar paints an unnerving picture that ranges from the militant drum shots fired on "Diverted" to the eerie juxtaposition of "FIM-92 Stinger" where a surface-to-air missile launcher gives it name to one of the album's most soulful, touching moments. Elsewhere we hear voices of his family on "Mother", we're fired up with gritty, unapologetic universal question "Why" and left asking more questions on the fractured finale "End Of Guerrilla". Much deeper than an album, this is a document, musically, politically, emotionally. Nazar and Hyperdub have created something truly unique.

Review: For the latest exotic outing on their Tak:til offshoot, Germany's World Music inspired Glitterbeat crew has turned to South Korean fusionist Park Jiha, an artist whose occasional releases combine traditional instruments with contemporary electronics and production techniques. There's plenty to enjoy from start to finish, from the exotic, mind-altering string motifs and intoxicating aural textures of opener "Arrival", to the fuzzy sunset bliss of "Thunder Shower", delicate piano motifs and reverb-heavy plucked strings of "Philos" and the slow melodic bob and swirling field recordings of "Walker: In Seoul". Best of all, though, is the childlike wonder of bittersweet standout cut "When I Think Of Her", in which Jiha's improvised vocals play a starring role.

Review: Cultures Of Soul dig deep into India's funkiest corners with this sophomore selection of Bombay mixes. Rich in range and references, highlights include Asha Bhosie's "Wild Thing" style riffage on "Pass Aao Na", Kishore Kumar's sudden gunshot switches between Mancini and Moroder on "Aaya Sanam Aaya Dweewana Tera" and the ridiculously infectious, stamp-heavy "Dance Music" which more than lives up to its name. A unique collection with attention to detail and sounds that have seldom been heard outside the sub continent, Brother Cleve has done himself proud.

  2. Na Boca Do Sol (2:54)
Review: Originally out in 1970 on his own self-titled album, Arthur Verocai's "Sylvia" is a peach of a song, one of those sweet and bubbly percussive tunes that blur the lines between modern civilization and the jungle. The Brazilian composer's music has been heavily sought-after in its original format, and Mr Bongo delivers here in fine style with another killer from the LP, "Na Boco Do Sol". Fans of Marcos Valle will appreciate this one for the slow magnetic waves permeating from just about every angle on the record.

Review: The moment you put that needle down on "Ye Mele" you will know that you've lit a serious firecracker; that bold piano hook and silver harmonies have that instant classic appeal even if you've never heard it. A bona fide Brazilian classic. It's backed by a 68 track from the Golden Boys. A much more introspective fusion of late 60s American folk, Latin and Ennio-style original score music, full attention is arrested right until the stunning crescendo finale.
