Uh Ah Song
Cat: PH 45034. Rel: 20 Jun 24
Uh-Ah Song (3:31)
Otoma Da Naba (4:06)
Review: A hugely exciting and thoroughly danceable new 7" from Florence Adooni, blowing any other artist who could even remotely hope to stake a worthy claim to contemporary highlife out of the park. Following up her debut single 'Fo Yelle' on Philophon, the Ghanaian Frafra Soul singer returns backed by an eight-member troupe, made up of young talents from the highlife scene of Kumasi, Ghana. 'Uh Ah Song' and its inverse counterpart 'Otoma Da Naba' are slick, clean and joyous daytime jaunts, with the former track lyrically meditating on familial and childhood themes while effortlessly pinning down a difficult-to-maintain-for-most uptempo highlife backbeat and improv. The B-side, meanwhile, pays tribute to the supreme terrestrial creator central to Adooni's native Frafra community, and centres on a heptatonic electronic, nigh acid riff and lo-fi texture with a "je ne sais qoui" that, in our view, renders it the tune of the year so far.

Review: Saci Perere by Banda Black Rio is a Brazilian jazz-funk masterpiece that deserves a rediscovery this summer. Pioneers of the soul-funk movement in Brazil, Banda Black Rio, led by saxophonist Oberdan Magalhaes, effortlessly blend samba, jazz, and Brazilian rhythms, evoking comparisons to other strong 70s bands. This reissue satisfies the demand for the rare original album, delivering a protest-triumphant mix of mellow, tropical, and uplifting melodies. Tracks like 'Miss Cheryl' epitomize the album's infectious energy, with its soulful groove captivating London dancefloors in the 80s. Saci Perere is a must-listen for fans of Brazilian jazz-funk, offering a melodic, playful, and atmospheric journey that is both nostalgic and timeless. It's a love letter to the lush sounds of Brazilian music, guaranteed to get more fans as more people hear this phenomenal album.

Review: By the time they released Saci Perere in 1980, carioca outfit Banda Black Rio were amongst Brazil's biggest dance music stars - an outfit whose blends of samba, jazz, disco, funk and MPB moved the heart and feet of the country's dancers. The set remains a timeless Brazilian classic - hence this much-deserved CD reissue. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the leisurely sundown headiness of 'Saci Perere', and horn-heavy jauntiness of 'Melissa', to the funky samba-jazz fusion of 'Subindo O Morro', synth-laden downtempo sunshine of 'Amor Natural' and the atmospheric Latin disco-funk of 'Broto Sexy'. An album that should be in every Brazilian music fan's collection.

Review: Medellin-based American Bosq - a renowned musical fusionist with a passion for all things tropical - has been working with Benin-based Nigerian guitarist/vocalist Kaleta on and off for 12 years, with the pair delivering a series of sensational singles. No Be Today is the duo's first collaborative full length, with previous singles being joined by previously unheard cuts across two slabs of wax. As you'd expect given their previous work, much of the music joins the dots between various Afro-Latin styles and similarly vintage Black American dance music genres such as disco, funk and soul. It's an effervescent and effortlessly brilliant set all told, with highlights including pitched-down Afro-funk number 'Ose', glorious Afro-disco number 'Sonayon', Afrobeat update 'Ipade' and scorching Latin dancefloor workout 'Miselou'.

Review: The deep house magician that is Joaquin Joe Claussell is back on his own majestic Sacred Rhythm with a bunch of, well, sacred rhythms. As always they are addend with his usual sophisticated mix of jazzy melodies, steamy drums and deep basslines. This time he offers up the single 'Progressive Roots' which is prime Afro-futurism with Balearic guitar lines ringing out next to the nimble keys and shimmering pads. Ahmee's Club Culture Foundation remix goes more deep and cavernous with a subtler sound, and the Deep mix then gets tribal. 'Progressive Roots Congo' closes out with shuffling broken beats and layers of rich percussion.

Review: Imagine a Latin reboot of "Back to the Future" starring Arsenio Rodriguez as the mad scientist and Eblis Alvarez (Meridian Brothers) as his time-travelling student. This album serves as the perfect imaginary soundtrack for that unmade film. Following the success of his debut solo album Mentallogenic, Alex Figueira returns with a more collaborative approach, crafting the second album of his expansive project, Conjunto Papa Upa. Embracing soul, funk, jazz, psychedelia, and electronics, Fruta Madura ("Ripe Fruit") navigates diverse tempos and rhythms, offering a refreshing blend amidst electronic-dominated tropical music. Figueira's distinctive production shines, showcasing his eclectic vision in a genre-defying journey through African, American and Caribbean traditions. With witty, mature themes and spirited compositions, this album promises to be a future classic in tropical psychedelic music.

Review: Juan Gabriel's latest studio album, 'Mexico con Escalas en Mi Corazon (Ciudades)', marks a poignant return for the iconic Mexican superstar and prolific songwriter, and marks a first posthumous release since his passing in 2016. Featuring original and previously unreleased songs, the album is a testament to his profound love for Mexico and is one that will captivate and astonish fans in equal measure. Rruina (3:31)
Review: Sami Galbi is a Swiss-Moroccan musician who looks to his childhood for musical inspiration. The A-side of this new 7" is a thoughtful post-breakup classic with raw synths and bouncing rhythm that melds rai influences with contemporary sounds and despite tacking a serious subject with gravitas also has a humourous edge. On the flip is 'Rruina,' a powerful follow-up with deeper darker club sounds that take Swiss-Moroccan rai-chaabi fusions into new territory. Both tunes are captivating listens from this fine talent and are sure to make an indelible impression on all who hear them.

Review: There are back stories, and then there's Chess of the Wind. Sheila Gharachedaghi's remarkable movie soundtrack wouldn't be here today if it weren't for the fact the movie itself - a 1976, pre-revolutionary Iranian queer-gothic-class-horror masterpiece - had been banned in its homeland and presumed lost forever, until a copy turned up in an antique shop. That was 2014, and six years later it was re-released, having benefited from restoration by the Martin Scorsese Film Foundation. A remarkable insight not just into a society long since lost, but its pitfalls and problems, to accompany this Gharachedaghi combines classical Persian instrumentation and atonal dissonance, traditional melodies and experimental moods for a score that's just as much of a landmark.

Review: Mohammad Reza Aslani's acclaimed 1976 masterpiece Chess Of The Wind hears its once-lost soundtrack reissued for the first time. Composed by Tehran-born musician Sheida Gharachedaghi, the eponymous score lent Aslani's film a much needed added weight of mystery and intrigue, which historically compounded well with the film's then-unfortunate, but now mythologised, banning by the Pahlavi Imperial State of Iran upon its release. The score was lost along with the film in its entirety; only when it was rediscovered in an antiques shop in 2014 did it go on to receive a full thoroughgoing remaster by the Martin Scorsese Film Foundation. With the film revolving around the death of a wealthy estate owner and the familial fallout that ensues, Gharachedaghi's score - made up of Persian classical instrumentation fused with her Western classical conservatory background - makes for a chilling but ultimately warming, radical and proto-revolutionary sonic experience.

Review: Gledd brings a great mix of funk, disco, Afro and plenty of extra special magic to this hot new 12" on Saint Wax. It opens with 'Papa Bel' which is a steamy cut with florid melodic leads and tribal percussion. 'Tanda' then brings wailing vocals and more organic and jumbled grooves that ooze summer heat. The Afro rhythms continue through 'Rewild' which has a lively broken beat that rides stiff drums and last of all is the most intense of the lot - 'Guado Loop' is heavily layered with drums and perc, vocals, congas and background chants that will get any dancefloor in a sweat.

Review: Florence's Sleeve Records yoink the crown for most obscure reissue, as of late. In their words, "the image on the cover of this record as far as anybody can reasonably tell is probably the only photograph of The Hygrades in existence." Clearly, the promo move for this record is to play up the much-trammeled obscurity/mystery angle, but perhaps the real question should be 'why or how did The Hygrades find themselves in such a historical position to become the object of retroactive sleuthing in the first place?' The answer is: they had an early-career boost as recording artists for HMV/EMI and then seemed to drop off the commercial music map. So, if you're into mysteries, this one might be (and end up in) your bag. But, please, once the mystery is solved, don't also forget to stop and imbibe the glorious Afro-funk and Afrobeats jaunts heard inside, all testifying the potent hotpot of sounds - funk, blues, and soul - that both went into and made pungent the Western African shores of the 70s.

Growing up in a region where Zulu isicathamiya music thrives, made famous by legends like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, The Joy tap into a rich tradition and their music, characterised by powerful, lion-like mbube vocalisations, reaching beyond mere performance to touch something deeply ancestral, especially evident when lead vocalist Duzie unleashes his extraordinary voice. This group's journey from local choir practices to international acclaim is nothing short of miraculous, marked by a significant win in a regional singing contest and recognition from stars like Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson. Their music, produced by Two Inch Punch, blends traditional influences with contemporary appeal, achieving millions of streams and resonating uniquely in today's diverse musical landscape.

It was recorded at Island Studios London then mixed in L.A. during a golden period for the Motown studios. That quality shines through on the record, not least thanks to the appearance throughout of the 'mean machine' which was an alias of legendary Motown artists The Commodores' brass section. An original of this will cost you well over 500 quid so do not sleep on this quality reissue from BBE as it is a brilliant bit of Afro-funk for those who know.

Review: South African Madala Kunene, known as Bafo, blends Zulu folk with township blues to create his unique and so-called 'Madala-line' music. His songs are inspired by dreams, ancestral messages, and Zulu folklore, and often incorporate traditional songs, nursery rhymes and lullabies. Musicologists study and teach his work, and in May 2023, he received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal for his contributions to indigenous and African music. Kunene started buskin aged just seven with a homemade guitar and was discovered by bassist Sipho Gumede. His debut album, released in 1990, now gets its first-ever vinyl reissue courtesy of Bella Union.

His journey from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais to the stages of Savassi Jazz Festival shows his dedication to exploring the intersections of free jazz and Brazilian music. Macunaismo Tardio, presented in two volumes, is a fantastic example of Mendes's artistry, featuring original compositions alongside fresh arrangements of Brazilian classics. Masterminded by Jurgen von Knoblauch of Jazzanova, this release on the label is a gem among overlooked masterpieces. Mendes's rendition of 'Aldeia de Ogum' by Joyce Moreno stands out as a stunning reinterpretation, infusing the dancefloor classic with new life. 'Macunaismo Tardio' is a great find for anyone seeking a deep dive into the rich traditions of Brazilian jazz and its innovative creators.

Review: The latest of several new releases to top up the Funky French League repertoire, this latest sultry boogie strut from phallic philophonist Monsieur Willy is a real delight. The Parisian DJ and producer brings a distinct Afro-boogie update to an original song, 'A.I.E. A Mwana', which was originally recorded in 2003 and became an international sleeper hit. Now Monsieur Willy brings us three new interpretations, all carrying with them a message of love and peace.

Review: New Regency Orchestra's debut album is a vibrant homage to the Afro-Cuban jazz legacy, reimagining classics with contemporary dynamism. Led by artistic director Lex Blondin and co-captain Andy Wood, the 18-piece ensemble breathes new life into timeless tunes from the 1950s to the 1970s. Eliane Correa's direction ensures a fluid and energetic performance throughout. The album features ten instrumental tracks showcasing NRO's powerhouse rhythm section and horn arrangements, alongside two captivating vocal numbers. Tracks like 'Pregon' and 'Mambo Rama' exude anthemic horn stabs and infectious grooves, while 'Papa Boco' and 'Labasta Llego' add scorching vocal performances to the mix. NRO's blend of tradition and innovation shines through, with respectful nods to jazz luminaries like Tito Puente and Chico O'Farrill, infused with London's vibrant jazz scene. The result is a celebration of shared joy and irresistible music that invites listeners to move and groove along.

Review: O Terno's evolution from 60s-inspired rock to their latest album shows a bold departure from mainstream expectations. While their earlier work hinted at potential commercial success akin to Los Hermanos, the band chose a path less traveled, embracing subversive melodies and instrumentation. Their latest offering is a perfect example to this artistic evolution. seamlessly blends intimate arrangements with a full-band approach, resulting in a captivating sonic experience. Tracks like 'O Bilhete' exude a raw, close-up intimacy, while 'E no Final' delivers cinematic grandeur. Lyrically, the album navigates diverse themes, from sociopolitical commentary to introspective musings. A standout collaboration with Devendra Banhart and Shintaro Sakamoto on 'Volta E Meia' adds depth, exploring themes of romance and self-discovery. Overall, is a beautifully crafted record that defies genre conventions, cementing O Terno's status as innovative trailblazers in the Brazilian music scene.

Review: Arakou, situated over 400 km north of Cotonou, housed the Orchestre Anassoua-Jazz de Parakou. Through the 1970s, they recorded several singles and EPs for Albarika and a few others, but never completed a full album.Their 1975 45rpm release is exceptionally rare; no copy has surfaced on eBay, nor is it listed on Discogs. Beyond rarity, 'Bakassine Gabou' offers a highly-charged, hypnotic dance track perfect for DJs, while 'Moumouni Bassina Borou Fo' intensifies with layered guitar, vocals, and percussion. What's more, this version finds both tracks were meticulously transferred, restored, and mastered from the original 1/4 inch tape.

Pa' Los Rumberos (2:33)
Review: It has now been three years since Matasuna Records unveiled a scorching Latin 45 showcasing two tracks by Venezuelan ensemble Phirpo y sus Caribes, led by Porfi Jimenez. Now, Matasuna is reissuing two more cuts from their sole album, Parrilla Caliente, this time on a 7" vinyl - a debut for these tracks in this format. The original 1972 album, a scarce collector's gem on Philips, holds official licensing from Jimenez's family. On the A-side, 'Y Esa Pava Que?' ignites with Latin funk fervour and is driven by robust drums, potent horns, and groovy, psychedelic keys and guitars. The B-side features 'Pa' Los Rumbero,' a vibrant rendition of Tito Puente's classic, showcasing Jimenez and his band's exceptional musicianship.

Review: Ronnie April's Positive Energy's 'Snowflake' is a legendary release that has achieved mythical status within the jazzdance scene. Originally pressed on Ronnie's own Jude imprint and distributed locally with limited success, this impossibly rare gem has become a coveted holy grail for collectors. The track's infectious groove and captivating melody have solidified its place as a timeless classic, even spawning bootleg copies due to its scarcity. Beyond its rarity, the music itself is truly exceptional, showcasing Ronnie April's immense talent as a composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist. With a career that boasts collaborations with jazz luminaries such as Tito Puente, Louis Armstrong, and Lionel Hampton, 'Snowflake' stands as a testament to April's enduring musical legacy. The album continues from there, highlights including the excellent upbeat gem 'Dancer's Theme' and the beautiful haunting 'A Ballad For Sir James' that really exemplify that variety of great Soul music here.

His illustrious career includes collaborations with Tito Puente, Paulinho da Costa, and Stan Getz, among other greats, and Estamos en Algo delights with its diverse rhythms. Review: One of the leading lights of Ghana's vibrant musical ecosystem, Ebo Taylor cast a monumental influence thanks to his deft blend of Afrobeat, jazz and funk, helping define the now-canonical highlife sound. 'Twer Nyame' was released as a three-track single in 1978, although the 16-minute run time of the track makes it much more than a rapid fire hit. Backed with the delicate delights of 'Peace On Earth' and the shuffling funk perfection of 'Atwer Abroba', it's a rare gem of Ghanaian groove from the undisputed king of the sound.

Review: Juan Pablo Torres's 1978 release Algo Nuevo is a vibrant addition to the Mr Bongo Cuban Classics series, displaying the trombonist's eclectic blend of jazz-funk and Afro-Cuban styles. The album kicks off with the energetic 'Pan Caliente,' a fusion of Latin percussion, horns, and infectious vocals, augmented by cosmic synth touches that give it a modern edge. Tracks like 'Guajira 2001' offer a future-forward take on traditional Cuban dance music, while 'Cacao' delivers a funky, percussive groove reminiscent of electronic disco anthems. 'Elvira' highlights the album's psychedelic essence with its deep Latin rhythms and trippy synths. Throughout Algo Nuevo, Torres explores a variety of Afro-Cuban genres, infusing them with mindbending cosmic influences. The result is a dynamic and diverse album that offers plenty of dancefloor-ready tracks as well as more downtempo numbers. With its blend of traditional rhythms and contemporary sounds, Algo Nuevo stands as another shining example of Cuba's rich musical heritage.

Review: The next release in the Mr Bongo Cuban Classics series is Juan Pablo Torres' iconic 1977 album Super Son. Featuring tripped-out rumbas, psych-Afro-Latin funk, and quirky orchestrated tracks with a big band horn section, it showcases Torres' band Algo Nuevo. Torres, also director of Estrellas De Areito, released numerous albums on Areito/EGREM. Despite post-revolution censorship, Cuban musicians enjoyed artistic freedom, leading to 1970s and '80s experimentation. Super Son exemplifies this, with tracks like 'Y Que Bien,' 'Pastel En Descarga,' 'Con Aji Guaguao,' and 'Son Riendo' blending psychedelic funk and Afro-Cuban rhythms into a joyful, energetic masterpiece.
