D'ailie - "Live It Up" (feat Janice Hoyte) (5:22)
D'ailie - "Live It Up" (instrumental) (4:13)
Review: This latest is a reissue of a Congress Productions EP featuring their seminal 'Neptune'. The much-sampled early 80s jazz-funk classic comes in original form next to two unreleased cuts. The first is a rare boogie cut 'Live It Up' that has been extended for more dancefloor heft having first been dropped under the D'aile' alias as a B-side. Then comes 'Kevin's Funk' which is named in reference to Incognito trumpet player Kevin Robinson, who played as part of a Congress-associated line-up for this session.

Nigeria (7:03)
Review: Nicola Conte and Gianluca Petrella follow up last year's beautiful "African Spirits / New World Shuffle" with two more lavish instrumentals. "Sun Song" lives up to its name with wave after wave of heated musicianship from the belting harmonies to the light-touch keys. "Nigeria" taps deep into the source too as it drives us through the heart of Lagos with full horns and sweeping keys. Spiritual, sun-splashed and vital.

Lovely (Edits) (4:35)
13 (Edits) (5:09)
Review: Galaxy Sound Co. hits 40 releases deep with yet another buy-on-sight 7". This latest entry into the Sample Series kicks off with an edit of 'Lovely Is Today' by Eddie Harris from his 1968 album Plug Me In. It's steeped in delightfully conversational saxophone with rousing chords dancing beneath in a swinging 60s fashion. A real classy gem. On the flip, 'September 13' by Deodato gets reworked and is from his self-titled jazz-funk album. This one is more funky and it's led by some big, proud horn stabs and silky drum rumbles enriched with great synths. Another vital 45 from this fine label.

Harlem Buck (edit) (5:05)
Review: If you like hip hop and broken beats and top-class edits you will already be fans of Black Cash & Theo AKA Thelonious Beats. They have got a bottomless discography full of it and mostly on their own Galaxy Sound Co label. Here comes another addition to the cannon in the form of a pair of glorious jazz-funk nuggets, starting with 'Footin' It' by George Benson from his fifth studio LP back in 1968. On the flip is a 1973 cut from pianist Les McCann. 'The Harlem Buck Strut' was from a groundbreaking jazz-synth album and you can tell why here with its forward-looking sounds and designs still sounding ahead of its time.

Alzira Vida (8:23)
Ocean Drive (6:21)
Difi The Hifi (6:50)
Review: We're not sure who GeeW is but since 2021 they have served up three super fusion EPs, one on Ten Lovers Music and two on Colin Curtis Presents, which is where they return now for the third time. Their Deeper Than Black EP is a magic one that draws on all forms of jazz, soul, Latin, bossa, funk and house to cook up broken beat explorations doused in sunshine and with one eye on the stars. The title cut is a lively and vibrant jam with layers of percussion and mad Rhodes jams, 'Alzira Vida' is a little more chill but no less expertly arranged and 'Ocean Drive' then gets more dance with its prickly broken beats and lush horns. 'Difi The Hifi' is high-paced fusion brilliance.

Walk Like A Motherfucker (3:08)
Issac Hayes (2:48)
Review: Karma Chief takes strict instructions from Ghost Funk Orchestra here to 'Walk Like A Motherfucker'. It is a single taken originally from their 2019 album A Song For Paul which was written, arranged, and performed by Seth Applebaum with plenty of sidemen on cello, violin, trombone and trumpet all making it a fulsome and raw funk sound. The vocals are coated in sleazy reverb to add some menace to the sensuality of the tones and on the flip is 'Issac Hayes', another reverb heavy funk chaser.

Review: Limited reissue of French, modern spiritual jazz tracks on Kindred Spirits - holy grail for some, a great new discovery for most of us! Really cool and playful music - full of 50's angst. Gilson's 'Avec...' is comparable to Mulatu Astatke's Ethiopics style jazz. Full length CD to follow.

Review: Glass Beams is a newcomer to the Research Records label but immediately fits right in with its cosmic instrumentation and kraut tinged polyrhythms. There is a real mysticism to his work that bridges the gap between may different scenes, sounds and cultures with originality and style. This EP was recorded at the start of 2020 and is a vortex of percussion, rhythm and riding basslines that act as a portal into a psyched out work of rock, folk and 70s prog which will leave you in awe. The superb guitar phrases, dreamy vocal samples and rattlesnake charm all make an indelible mark.

Chimera (9:02)
Dere (5:05)
Makam Rasta (8:31)
Onbesli (7:07)
Review: Rocafort Records has excelled itself once again with this release, a four-track journey into "oriental jazz" by a quartet of international musicians helmed by young Turkish pianist, composer and arranger Gokhan Surer. He describes his style as "world, fusion, jazz", which is a neat summary of the exotic, evocative and emotion-rich material on offer. Check first the warm occidental jazz shuffle of "Chimera" before recoiling in wonder at the Turkish strings, double bass, hushed percussion and jazz-funk style electric piano solos of "Dere". Over on side B, "Makam Rasta" is an inspired fusion of reggae, jazz-funk and Arabian instrumentation, while "Onbesli" is a rolling fusion cut underpinned by hip-hop style beats.

The Creator Has A Master Plan (5:21)
Love Is Everywhere (4:26)
You've Got To Have Freedom (6:25)
Review: Matthew Halsall's Gondwana label is seeing a busy August what with the imprint flooding our jazz charts with reissues and, of course, new releases such as this wonderful collaborative effort from The Gondwana Orchestra and Dwight Trible. Trible's voice is like silk, running up and down the delicate waves of melodies from the collective, with "Colors" and "The Creator Has A Master Plan" both capable of making the toughest of audiences feel utterly uplifted. On the flip, "Love Is Everywhere" shines bright amid a flurry of flutes and intricate drum percussions, while "You've Got To Have Freedom" rides off a much smoother, deeper sort of vibe that's got a little funk at its core. Wicked.

Lady Day & John Coltrane (3:25)
What's Going On (interlude) (0:45)
Review: Penny Goodwin's material is hard enough to come by in LP format, but the 7"s really are a sight for sore eyes. Luckily, we got Athens Form The North on our side, a stupendous soul and funk reissuer that has been delivering some serious heat over the last three years. "Too Soon You're Old" is a 1973 soul charmer, full of mystique and sensuality, the track moves slowly but with a great deal of funky swing to its bass. "Lady Day & John Coltrane" is a different kind of swinger, an uptempo funk ballad backed by flurries of organs and drum rolls, whereas "What's Going On" heads down a spiritual jazz tip to complete what is the most diverse soul single we've got to offer this week!

Review: First things first; what a title! Naturally it lives up to its enticing name. Breezy and woozy, it's harmonica heaven that leans towards country just on the right side of sad. The equally ace titled "Have Spacesuit Will Travel", meanwhile, veers more into cosmic Jeff Wayne. Parts two and three finish the set: the former's a fly-by-night Booker T/The Meters style jam while the latter winds things down in a hazy early Bonobo musk.

Memners Karl Denson, Elgin Park, Aaron Redfield, Chris Stillwell and Robert Walter have released six albums to date and originally formed as a backing band for rare groove star DJ Greyboy. Here though is the title track of their 'A Town Called Earth' long player from 1997 and it is one that is sure to appeal to jazz and funk heads who enjoy Pharaoh Sanders and Thembi. The band played seven live-streams during the pandemic and proved they still very much have it.

They have been taken from Dave Grusin's 1965 album 'Kaleidoscope' and still sound fresh. Review: Big Crown does it again here with another magical 7" this time from Dave Guy, who has contributed to plenty of this label but only now makes his solo debut. It finds him working with label regulars Homer Steinweiss & Nick Movshon, who take care of production and play on the recordings. 'Footwork' is a vibrant fusion of soul, funk, and jazz that, as a trumpeter for the renowned band The Dap-Kings, brings his distinctive style to the forefront and infuses each track with infectious energy and groove. Dynamic horn arrangements, tight rhythms, and soulful melodies all make this one special and show just how skilled a musician Guy is, and apparently, there is plenty more to come.

Laying down a spiritual arrangement so frenetic and full of its own life it takes up two parts, Idris's sax plays duet with Philophon's own vocalist Guy One. Happy Gamma Ray (15:13)
Review: The first release from the Axis Audiophile Series. Jeff Mills has formed an electronic jazz fusion band and this 12? is a recording of their recent performance in Kobe during the TodaysArt.JP Festival. Mills manages the decks, drums and percussion and is joined Detroit legend and Underground Resistance stalwart Gerald Mitchell (Los Hermanos/Galaxy 2 Galaxy), keyboardist Yumiko Ohno and bassist Kenji Jino. "Eventide" has the same kind of urban, uplifting soul as anything Kaidi Thatham or Mark de Clive-Lowe have made and isn't bad at all! On the flip "Happy Gamma Ray" features uplifting keys and emotive chords backed by funk bass and one of Mills' unmistakeable 909 drum machine workouts. It really seems that there's no limit to this Motor City legend's creativity which has spanned nearly 30 years and we're excited about this new chapter in the Wizard's sonic universe.

Colours
Review: Schema regular Gerardo Frisina has dug deep for the A-side of this very special 7". Taking the Booker T dreaminess and Hammond flourishes of The Lola's super-rare "Soul 70", he's beefed up the percussion and added an array of richly textured dubbiness with mesmerising effect. Flip for "Colours". An original by Gerardo, it's the ideal foil to the somnambulant sonics of the title track; stomping with northern soul glee, it's a spellbinding fusion of flutes, heavy percussion and wily organ stabs. Schema seldom disappoint, and Gerardo is the reason why.

Review: Nu-jazz' crossover into broken beat is a liminal and tumultuous border. But Takashi Nakazato, along with his band Galavanters, seem to have succeeded in capturing its lesser-trodden terrain, wherein a live ensemble keeps its tunes danceable, not dubious. 'Toshiafro' is a four track vinyl EP, carefully composed by Nakazato to convey a wholly original foray through his take on modern electronica amnd jazz fusion, from the major-toned Eastern spritzings of 'Akari' to the closing, liquid drum n' bass tumult of 'Amber'.

This is a debut on this notable jazz label for this artist but those who follow free music closely will be familiar with his work such as his ZUZU debut album Dialectic Soul or last year's offering on Astral Spirits, Out Side Work. This album sees him again work with his core quartet from Dialectic Soul, namely South African musicians Thembinkosi Mavimbela on bass, Robin Fassie on trumpet, and Buddy Wells on tenor sax. It results in a soulful and accessible yet forward-thinking sound.

The superbly seductive album is rooted in laid-back lounge and romantic late-night downtempo sounds, but is heavily influenced by traditional delta blues and urban jazz. The biggest tune from the record, 'Pablo's Blues' is characterised by the dobro riff of Lancee and the voice of blues legend Robert Johnson and this is the first time or any of these tracks, have been on vinyl. They have been remastered for the occasion and come hand-numbered. Don't sleep on this classic of the genre.

Review: Sam Gendel's prolific spell continues apace on his regular home of Leaving Records as he widens the net beyond the stark saxophone work he's best known for. This LP is ostensibly based around 14 different patterns within traditional Japanese embroidery, and these configurations have proven to be a strong jump off point for Gendel's delicate, acoustic compositions. There's minimalism and frailty around the sound palette, but equally a captivating warmth and some genuinely stunning musicianship. Gendel does indeed wield his sax plenty on the album, but it feels here like the emphasis is on guitar rather than woodwind, resulting in a captivating, understated listen from a true modern master.

Review: Since making his debut midway through the last decade, saxophonist and producer Sam Gendel has released an insane number of solo and collaborative albums, variously turning his hand to ambient jazz, experimental electronica, abstract soundscapes, free-jazz and, most recently, jazz-fusion. On Superstore, officially a follow-up to 2021's Fresh Bread, Gendel does it all, turning his hand to a dizzying array of styles on a mixtape style excursion full to bursting with quick blasts of brilliance, off-kilter experiments and 21st century mutations of jazz. Yet despite this eclectism (a product of it being a collection of cuts recorded at different times, with different people), the album holds together brilliantly, with his love of hip-hop soul, skewed jazz-funk, abstract jazz and ambient providing a kind of loose sonic glue.

Review: Sam Gendel and Marcella Cytrynowicz invite you into a lo-fi and imitate world on new album Audiobook. It's an experimental mix of knackered rhythms and damaged tale sounds, distant shakers and shards of melody. Each track is a collage, a loose jumble, a sketch book of ideas that is run through with a sense of hope, despite the often muggy and melancholic overtones. Track five, 'IJ', is a cover of 'Deluge' by Wayne Shorter of the sort you have never heard before and the second half goes a little more unhinged and unusual, but remains a fascinating listen.

Review: Le Tres Jazz Club have secured the rights to the first vinyl reissue of this classic jazz record which first came on the Union label in 1971. It was the first in quintet formation for George Otsuka, who managed to surround himself with the killer talents of Shunzo Ohno on trumpet and flugelhorn, Takao Uematsu on tenor and soprano, Takashi Mizuhashi on bass and Hideo Ichikawa on electric piano. Long and spaced out jazz-funk sits next to a fine cover of 'Fool on the Hill.' All five musicians show great skills and manage to play together super tight, so there is no wonder recent copies of the original vinyl have sold for L200-300.

Review: Philadelphia International Records is the label that captured the musical magic of one truly unique city. The so-called Philie sound is a genre all of its own - string laced, orchestral disco that is supremely sumptuous and inescapably joyful. All of its best moments are captured here on this 12 track collection which is packed front to back, top to bottom with eternal classics from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes to MFSB, The O'Jays to Teddy Pendergrass. You will already know all these tunes but having them together on one handy vinyl aint no bad thing.

Review: It's always a good day when we hear something new from acclaimed saxophonist, composer, bandleader and innovator Camilla George. This third album is another rich, highly cultural mix of afrobeat, hip hop, jazz and Camilla's virtuosic alto saxophone sounds. Plenty of vital talents from the vibrant London scene feature as well as Birmingham's finest MC Lady Sanity. The record is dedicated to Camilla's Ibibio tribe of south eastern coastal Nigeria, and says the artist, is "a celebration of roots, creation and community" and that certainly comes over.

Review: Over the years, we've been treated to numerous recordings of Gerry Mulligan and his quartet in concert, most famously in Paris in 1954. The concert captured on this recording - released here for the first time after its rediscovery a year or two back - dates from 1959, was captured on tape in a legendary Copehagen jazz club and features fellow legend Art Farmer on trumpet. Aside from two tracks in which Mulligan switches to piano, the album's key motif is the interplay between Mulligan's impeccable baritone saxophone (sounding a little more soulful than on some recordings) and Farmer's fluid - if sometimes exuberant - trumpet solos. Full of elongated, stretched-out takes full of inspired interpretations of jazz standards and classic catalogue cuts, In Concert is a must-check for dedicated jazz heads.

Review: In the annals of jazz history, few albums hold the prestige and enduring appeal of Getz/Gilberto. Released in 1964, this iconic collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz, guitarist Joao Gilberto, and composer Antonio Carlos Jobim represents a pinnacle moment in the fusion of jazz and bossa nova. Across its ten tracks, the album weaves a mesmerizing tapestry of melody and rhythm, casting a spell that continues to captivate listeners over half a century later. At the heart lies the symbiotic relationship between two musical giants: Stan Getz, the virtuosic tenor saxophonist renowned for his velvety tone and lyrical phrasing and Joao Gilberto, the Brazilian guitarist and vocalist whose soft, intimate delivery epitomizes the essence of bossa nova. Together, they create a sublime synergy, effortlessly blending their respective styles to craft a sound that is at once sophisticated and deeply emotive.

Review: The late, great Jose Padilla was a big fan of the work of Stan Getz, whose easy-going, sun-soaked and accessible take on jazz - and especially his more Latin-tinged offerings - appeared frequently in the Balearic legend's DJ sets. Jazz Samba Encore, the saxophonist's 1963 collaboration with Brazilian jazz guitarist Luiz Bonfa, remains one of the most unashamedly joyous sets in his catalogue. Reissued here in a Japanese edition, it sees Getz and Bonfa trading solos over luscious bossa-nova and samba grooves. There are plenty of standout moments, with our picks including the dreamy 'Sambalero', the sparkling breeziness of 'Samba De Duas Notas (Two-Note Samba)', the glorious 'Suadade Vem Correndo' and smoky closing cut 'Ebondy Samba'.

Review: Back in 1994, legendary tenor saxophonist Pharoah Sanders joined forces with celebrated "gnawa" musician Maleem Mahmoud Ghania and producer Bill Laswell for an album of far-sighted jazz experiments. For some reason "The Trance Of Seven Colors" was never released on vinyl at the time, meaning that this double LP reissue is a genuine first. The set itself still sounds as fresh and otherworldly as it did back in the 1990s, offering a unique and otherworldly fusion of traditional Moroccan instrumentation, vocals and rhythms, freestyle jazz improvisations and cosmic production from the effervescent Laswell. We can't think of many other albums that are quite like it, which is high praise indeed.

Review: Some superb musical archaeology here, as The Artless Cuckoo presents an album of rediscovered 1980s recordings from obscure German outfit Ghia, including a smattering that the trio made whilst living in Spain between 1986 and '88. Some of the tracks were reportedly recorded using a porta-studio style four-track, but you'd never be able to tell thanks to the fine mastering job. Musically, it's an undeniable sun-soaked affair that brilliantly blurs the boundaries between horizontal electrofunk, instrumental Balearic synthpop, Mediterranean jazz-funk, Afro-cosmic and more energetic, dancefloor-focused flavours. It's the sort of thing that Nu Genea would rightfully be praised for releasing, except it was recorded 'back in the day' rather than earlier this year. Terrific stuff!

Review: Ghost Funk Orchestra was conceived back in 2016 when producer Seth Applebaum dropped two EPs to mark the start of the project. The tunes now presented here were one-man-band, reel-to-reel tape recorded experiments that draw on all the many different sounds Applebaum was most into at the time. As such there is a ton of reverb here with Latin-style percussion, tape-saturated drums, weirdo time signatures, surf guitar sounds and Spanish-language female vocals. The music has been remastered for this proper full length release which invites you deep into Seth's unique musical world.

Review: Building on the success of their A New Kind of Love album back in 2022, Ghost Funk Orchestra ventures further into the realms of film music, exotica, and psychedelic surf rock with new record A Trip To The Moon.' It was written with the aim of creating a richly layered and collaged listening experience with myriad elements waiting to be discovered with each new spin, and they have certainly achieved that. Featuring fuzzy guitars drenched in spring reverb and horns arranged in a studio big band style, it offers a blend of garage rock attitude and big compositions with influences like Eddie Palmieri and Dusty Springfield to be found within. It also features real recorded transmissions from the Apollo moon missions weaved throughout the tracks as a tale is told of a woman left stranded on Earth by her cosmonaut partner.

Review: As DJ at one of the longest running and most venerable jazz nights around, London's Messin' Around, Adrian Gibson has road-tested more than a fair share of jazzy sensations in his time. Music For Jazz Dancers distills his knowledge and experience into one vital collection of essential cuts, and it's an eye-opening and valuable resource.Trombonist and bandleader Peter Herbolzheimer's collaboration with Dianne Reeves from 1995, "Cherokee," kicks things off with a big band flair that would undoubtedly tear up the right dance floor. Samba rhythms find a good home here too - with Mario Canonge's "Kon Djab Djigidi" and Marcos Ariel's pacey "Samba Torto" breaking out the congas in particular. In fact, much of what Gibson selects comes at a break-neck speed, which suggests the crowds at Messin' Around must have superhuman stamina!

Review: There remains great interest in the work of Astrud Gilberto, and much of it is being freshly remastered and pressed up on a constant basis. Her Look To The Rainbow is a captivating journey into the realms of what she did in the bossa nova and jazz. Released in 1966, it showcases Gilberto's ethereal vocals floating effortlessly over lush arrangements as tracks transport listeners to sun-kissed beaches with their infectious rhythms and melodic charm. Gilberto's voice often exudes a tender elegance, while the title track 'Look To The Rainbow' radiates with hope and optimism. With its seamless blend of Brazilian flair and jazz sensibility, this album remains a timeless classic.

Gillman has previously guested on music for Joe Claussell, Caruso and The African Sunset Project, playing the flute and flugelhorn. Under the Secret Garden alias here, Gillman has eight tracks over two 12" on a limited vinyl run, featuring styles that range from dark jazzy house as heard on 'Journey To The Secret Garden', broken beats experienced on 'The Sorcerer's Tale' (Part 1) or 'Secret Garden', to lush ambient journeys as heard on the bittersweet 'Transitions'. All in all, Red Earth Design is a remarkable effort by the London-based producer.

Copeland was always ahead of their time with her mix of experimental, ambient, exotic electronic sounds and poetry and famously scored kids' TV shows cut as including Sesame Street and Shiny Time Station. Review: Goat's last studio album, 2016's Requiem, had the feel of a weary, bittersweet goodbye - a melancholic masterpiece that seemed to signal the end of the road. The playfully titled Oh Death confirms that we all jumped to the same, inaccurate conclusion. Typically forthright, vibrant, colourful and weighty, the album's 10 tracks present the impossible-to-pigeonhole Swedish band at their bristling best. Musically, it's a real riot of aural colour, weight and improvisational intent, featuring songs and instrumentals that frequently blur the boundaries between wild psychedelic rock, freewheeling jazz and the infectious dancefloor funk of Afrobeat. For proof, check the intense and breathless 'Do The Dance', where honky tonk pianos, fuzz bass and grungy guitar riffs rise above tribal drums, and the tropical Afro-funk-goes-jazz-rock hedonism of 'Under No Nation'. Utterly brilliant.
