  2. DC
Review: The latest release on admirable London venue Cafe Oto's Otoruku label is welcome return to action from improvisational jazz trio Decoy and regular collaborator Joe McPhee (pocket trumpet, alto sax, voice), whose previous collaborative album landed seven years ago. The two tracks on "AC/DC" were recorded live at Cafe Oto last May and take the form of two lengthy free-jazz improvisations. The first set ("AC") moved from challenging and frenetic free jazz to heavyweight weirdo soul - all thickset grooves and impromptu solos - while the second ("DC") sees the quartet move from creepy experimentalism to stoned funk over the course of 40 mesmerizing minutes.

  1. Actions For Free Jazz Orchestra
Review: Two years ago Mats Gustafsson gathered the Fire! Orchestra for a very special performance at Krakow's Sacruym Profanum festival: a rare interpretation of Krystztof Penderecki's "Actions For Free Jazz Orchestra", a piece which had only been played live once before (in 1971, with an ensemble of musicians that included Don Cherry and Kenny Wheeler). Gustafsson's version of the creepy, subtly changing piece differs in a number of ways from the original - at 40 minutes, it's significant longer, allowing the inherent creepiness of the music and vocalizations to become more apparent - but remains largely faithful to Penderecki's score and selection of instruments. It makes for breathtaking and at times surprisingly alluring listening despite the piece's challenging nature, suggesting this is a recording that all serious jazz fans should own.

Review: After the wild revelations of the first Irreversible Entanglements album back in 2017, this vital new force in jazz and beat poetry returns to International Anthem with a new set. Once again the interplay between the players and lyricist Camae Ayewa is electric, not least on the fraught title track. The subject matter weighs heavy but all too familiar - racial tension and inequality in America given an urgent voice by Ayewa, and perfectly accented by Keir Neuringer's saxophone, Aquiles Navarro's trumpet, Luke Stewart's double bass and Tcheser Holmes drums. This is essential stuff, both in message and in sound.

Review: Since forming in 1987, experimental jazz trio The Necks has released an incredible number of albums, many of which take jazz in thrilling new directions. "Three", the Australian band's latest full-length excursion, is a terrific example of their off-kilter approach. You see, the music is not as wild or occasionally discordant as improvised free-jazz; instead, the trio utilizes odd, often densely layered percussion sounds, processed noises and creepy aural textures alongside the kind of piano motifs and double bass parts often found in more traditional jazz releases. There's a real post-rock sensibility to our ears, despite there being no evidence of rock present at all. The three tracks are all 20-minute plus epics that slowly unfurl as you listen, offering you a chance to immerse yourself in the music.

  3. Turquoise Twice

  5. Stop Over
Review: It would be fair to say that the latest edition in BBE's 'J-Jazz Masterclass' series of reissues is exceedingly rare. In fact, when it first appeared on Smile Records in 1976, only 100 copies of Hideto Saski-Toshiyuki Sekine Quartet's "Stop Over" were ever produced. The album's rarity is impressive, but it's the quality of the all-acoustic set of hard-bop workouts that makes it an essential purchase. As you might expect, there's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the high-octane rush of opener "Carole's Garden", where dizzying piano solos catch the ear, to the similarly hectic and arguably even more rush-inducing "Stop Over" (a ten minute cut of epic proportions), via the sweet, sparse and contemplative "Soultrane".

Review: In 2016 saxophonist and clarinetist Shabaka Hutchings established the "Ancestors" collective of South African musicians to perform live and record debut album "Wisdom Of Elders", a journey into the spiritual and avant-garde side of jazz inspired in part by the struggles of previous generations of black musicians. Four years on, the Sons Of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming member has reassembled the collective for album number two, "We Are Sent Here By History". It treads similar musical territory to its similarly essential predecessor, with Hutchings and his South African collaborators presenting tracks that, in his words, "meditate on the fact of our coming extinction as a species". While the music is nowhere near as doom-laden and miserable as that may suggest - it's very entertaining, thoughtful and spiritually involved - as albums go "We Are Sent Here By History" is certainly hard hitting.
