Summer Love (remix)
Review: Spiritual jazz fans are going to rather excited about this new one from the hard working people at P-Vine over in Japan: Chicago saxophonist Prince Billy Marge Wright's finest work, 'Summer Love', is now arriving on its own 7" for the first time ever. It is previously lost material that showcases his next level sound though here featuring mainly keyboard instruments as opposed to his more usual saxophone, but that only makes it all the more uplifting. On the flipside is a remix that is just as rare so this one really is an essential record for your collection.

Review: This superb new Jazz Room Records compilation showcases a vibrant mix of world genres that innovatively blend funk, J-jazz, Afro-Cuban, and boogaloo influences. The tracks range from the heavy Latin jazz energy of 'Bolivia 67' to the 1970s kung fu-inspired groove of 'Tong King Rock.' They all add up to a colourful collection that plays out with nice cohesion overall but also offers up some high class DJ weaponry. Along the way, the record takes in further highlights like 'Eastern Folktale' and the lively rhythms of standouts like 'Jump Up Life' which help to make this such a gem for the collection.

Review: The 1975 album Orang-Utan by renowned bassist and cellist Isao Suzuki is a standout in Japanese jazz, now reissued globally by Le Tres Jazz Club, a label dedicated to unearthing rare jazz gems. Originally released on the Three Blind Mice label, this album showcases Suzuki's innovative approach to jazz, blending free jazz and jazz fusion with remarkable fluidity. The album features an exceptional lineup, including saxophonist Kenji Mori, whose versatile playing on alto sax, bass clarinet, and flute evokes the spirit of Eric Dolphy, and the legendary guitarist Kazumi Watanabe, who delivers nuanced, captivating solos throughout. The band also includes bassist Samu Kawakami and drummer Shinji Mori, with a guest appearance by vocalist Mari Nakamoto, who adds a sublime touch on 'Where Are You Going?'ia cover of Shirley Horn's classic. Orang-Utan is bookended by two energetic, extended tracks, with the funk-infused opener 'Blue Road' setting the tone. The title track, a complex fusion piece, stands as the album's centerpiece. In between, more laid-back compositions highlight Watanabe's masterful guitar work. This reissue brings Suzuki's fourth album, a once highly sought-after collector's item, to a broader audience, reaffirming its status as a vital piece of jazz history.

Review: Blue Mitchell's Blue's Moods, originally released in 1960, is a hard bop gem featuring Mitchell's superb trumpet alongside Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums. This rhythm section's chemistry is next level, particularly evident on the slow blues track 'Kinda Vague' with Brooks' intricate hi-hat work. The album's opener, 'I'll Close My Eyes,' stands out and has even served as a favorite ringtone. Side-1, in particular, offers a relaxed and smooth blend of tunes that embody the essence of hard bop. As part of the Original Jazz Classics Series, this reissue boasts 180-gram vinyl, AAA lacquers cut from the original master tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, and is pressed at RTI. The OJC series, known for its dedication to preserving and reissuing influential jazz albums, continues its legacy with this release. Mitchell's work on Riverside is often considered superior to his Blue Note recordings, with Blue's Moods, Blue Soul, The Cupbearers, and Out Of The Blue being standout examples. This reissue ensures that new generations of jazz enthusiasts can experience the soulful brilliance of Blue Mitchell in pristine quality.

Review: Head Rock by Jiro Inagaki & His Soul Media offers a nostalgic journey into the Japanese jazz scene of 1970. Reminiscent of the film library albums from Italy, this album blends jazzy instrumentation with psychedelic rock elements, creating a unique sonic tapestry. While not a widely known Japanese album from the era, Head Rock provides pleasant grooves and moments of headphone bobbing enjoyment. The 2018 reissue on Columbia/Takt Jazz comes in a brilliant gatefold cover, making it a worthy addition to any collection. With original copies demanding steep prices, the reissue offers a more affordable option without compromising on quality. Head Rock is a worthwhile exploration of vintage Japanese jazz-rock fusion.

Review: This album recorded by Tatum and Webster in 1956 came just prior to Tatum's passing less than two months later. Revered as a masterpiece, the dynamic interplay between Webster's blend of aggression and lyricism and Tatum's flamboyance and delicacy creates a captivating encounter, with Callendar and Douglass providing impeccable support. Reissued previously by Essential Jazz Classics, this new edition adds bonus tracks from a 1953 Tatum solo session and four numbers from a summit meeting between Webster and Teddy Wilson. The opener sets a languid tempo, diverging from the breakneck pace of many bebop jams, establishing the album's relaxed vibe. And even as later cuts quicken the pace, there's an underlying sense of ease that permeates throughout. Tatum's cascades of notes serve as ornamental accents rather than urgent directives, while Webster, despite the excess reverb of the era, focuses on melody.

Review: Ben Webster's At The Renaissance captures a spellbinding live performance recorded at The Renaissance in Hollywood on Oct 14, 1960. This reissue, part of the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series, celebrates the timeless brilliance of Webster's tenor saxophone artistry. Accompanied by a stellar ensemble including pianist Jimmy Rowles, guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Red Mitchell, and drummer Frank Butler, Webster delivers a captivating set that showcases his superior and creative form. The album's repertoire offers a delightful variety, from the heartfelt rendition of 'Georgia on My Mind' to the infectious energy of 'Ole Miss Blues.' Webster's rich, emotive tone and masterful improvisation shine throughout, cementing his status as one of the founding emperors of the jazz tenor saxophone. This reissue, mastered AAA by Bernie Grundman from the original analogue tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, this edition ensures an exceptional listening experience. Presented in a gatefold old-style tip-on jacket by Stoughton Printing, the release pays homage to Webster's legacy with the reverence it deserves.

Review: Way Out West is Sonny Rollins' 1957 foray into jazz with a visually Western edge. Famous for its novel use of the 'strolling' technique - on which the esteemed American tenor saxophonist only solos with bass and drums, and drops the piano and guitar accompaniment - the sound produced is a uniquely up-close one. This Craft reissue captures that very same curious mood of Rollins' first adventure"out West", which we vicariously experience through this record.

Review: Takeo Moriyama: still Japan's leading jazz drummer, and loved by many new and old fans. Since the late 1960s, Moriyama swept the free jazz world alongside the Yosuke Yamashita trio; yet after leaving the group, the sublime talent-fluid Moriyama had nebulised in its wake was soon condensed into an ensemble, evolving and deepening his musicality in a more melodic and rhythmic direction. Smile is the album-bound result of this mid-career movement: a five-piece spiritual opus, packed with bright glissandos and frabjous horns, all perfectly positioned to contrast Moriyama's mesmeric hold over the rhythm.

Review: Charles Mingus' Pithecanthropus Erectus is a landmark in jazz, marking the shift from jazz as popular music to avant-garde experimentation. Mingus innovated by teaching arrangements by ear, composing with specific musicians in mind, and crafting tone poemsimoves that distanced him from traditional jazz standards. The title track is a haunting ten-minute tone poem, symbolising humanity's rise and fall. Its mix of eerie themes and chaotic bursts reflects civilization's cyclical collapse. Mingus' radical reimagining of Gershwin's A Foggy Day features jarring sound effects before settling into a more upbeat groove. 'Profile of Jackie' offers a moment of conventional beauty, showcasing Mingus' melodic side, while 'Love Chant' explores hypnotic repetition, though it drags in its early stages. However, the track evolves into an engaging improvisational journey. Featuring Jackie McLean and J.R. Monterose on sax, Mal Waldron on piano, and Willie Jones on drums, Mingus leads this quintet through a daring exploration of jazz's future. Pithecanthropus Erectus is a challenging but essential piece of jazz history.

At 88, Ebo Taylor recorded a powerful afrobeat album, one of his most seminal works of the 1970s. Meanwhile, Brazilian masters like Carlos Dafe, Dom Salvador, and Hyldon return to their roots, blending jazz, funk, and samba with Younge and Muhammad's modern sensibilities. The dynamic duo Antonio Carlos e Jocafi, along with Joyce and Tutty Moreno, also contribute rich, anthemic albums that resonate with their classic sounds. Review: Dexter Gordon's 1965 album Gettin' Around captures the essence of his refined, effortless saxophone playing, coming at a time when he was back in the States after a long stint in Europe. The vibe here is smooth and unhurried, with Gordon's tenor sax at the centre of it all, surrounded by a standout crew: vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, pianist Barry Harris, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and drummer Billy Higgins. This unique instrumentation really shines, especially with the interplay between Gordon and Hutcherson on tracks like 'Manha De Carnival' and 'Shiny Stockings.' The whole session feels relaxed yet precise, with Gordon letting his sax sing while the band provides subtle yet nuanced backing. Highlights include the gentle swing of 'Everybody's Somebody's Fool' and the more upbeat 'Le Coiffeur,' both showcasing the group's tight but easy-going chemistry. Reissued as part of the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series, this edition stays true to its analogue roots, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes and pressed on heavyweight 180g vinyl. For fans of Gordon or classic Blue Note, it's a must-have.

Despite Monk's modest soloing, his leadership allows Coltrane and Hawkins to shine, backed by Gigi Gryce's alto sax, Ray Copeland's trumpet and Wilbur Ware's bass. Art Blakey's percussion adds dynamic rhythm throughout. The album, a meeting of jazz generations, marks Monk's breakthrough, earning him rightful acclaim alongside Miles Davis and Charlie Parker. The session's historical significance is enhanced by its dual release context with 'Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane,' capturing the breadth of Monk's artistry from the same 1957 sessions. For jazz aficionados and newcomers alike, this reissue not only delights with its musical brilliance but also serves as a gateway to exploring Monk's pivotal role in jazz history and the innovative spirit that defines his legacy.

Review: A previously unreleased recording of the sensational and controversial Turkish theatre play by James Baldwin and Engin Cezzar, Istanbul 1970, is set to make waves. This recording has been licensed by Gokhan Akcura, who was entrusted with the master tape by Engin Cezzar, captures the intensity of a play that was banned by Istanbul authorities in 1970, despite being seen by 30,000 people in just 60 days. The audio has been meticulously restored from the original tape, and comes accompanied by liner notes from Zeynep Oral, Gokhan Akcura, Okay Temiz, and Erinc Guzel (Caz Plak Istanbul). This release brings to light Baldwin's groundbreaking play about gay relationships in a 1970s Istanbul prison. Jazz legend Don Cherry contributed music to the project, enhancing the play's dramatic tension. This lost free jazz gem, part of Caz Plak's Turkish Jazz Trilogy, is finally brought to a wider audience, thanks to this pressing.

Review: Saxophonist Sahib Shihab might not enjoy the reputation of some of his peers but he was a fine jazzman. For this legendary album he worked with a small but hugely talented collective of peers that included Francy Boland on piano, Fats Sadi on vibes, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. The one of a kind sound they cooked up back in 1970 has endured to this day but has always been hard to find and expensive. This reissue rights that wrong and reminds what a classic it is.

Left Alone
Cat: 405053 8997828.
Review: Left Alone is an album by American jazz pianist Mal Waldron recorded in 1959 and released on the Bethlehem label. 'Left Alone' is Waldron's signature song, coming as a subtle cover-tribute to the Billie Holiday song of the same name. Waldron's homage is shrewd, subtle and prowling, lurching ever-so-slowly forward with its sustained chords, held together rhymthically by a rather bare-bones (but intentionally so) percussion backing by Al Dreares. The mood is lonesome throughout, with Jackie McLean's alto sax providing much of the typical mood of blue jazz, against which Waldron's lower-register playing can truly shine.

Review: Marcos Valle's 23rd studio album, Tunel Acustico, is a sweeping blend of the Brazilian legend's six-decade career, from his iconic bossa nova beginnings to jazz-funk and LA disco. Valle, who has worked with names like Sergio Mendes and Leon Ware, pulls together past and present on this release. With two members of the renowned Brazilian jazz-funk group Azymuth on board, the rhythm section sets a lively foundation for Valle's soulful melodies. Highlights include 'Feels So Good,' a groovy 1979 collaboration with Leon Ware, freshly updated with AI stem-separation and new Portuguese lyrics, and 'Life Is What It Is,' a disco-infused track co-written with Chicago's Laudir De Oliveira. Guest lyricists such as Ceu and Moreno Veloso add a contemporary flair, while the closing track, 'Thank You Burt (For Bacharach),' pays homage to the legendary composer. With its dynamic mix of samba, soul, and timeless grooves, Tunel Acustico is another standout in Valle's storied career.

Review: Donald Byrd's Royal Flush, released in 1961 on Blue Note, exemplifies his mastery of hard bop, featuring a stellar lineup that includes a young Herbie Hancock on piano, Pepper Adams on baritone sax, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. This album marks Hancock's recording debut, showcasing his burgeoning talent as he steps into the shoes of Duke Pearson. The combination of Byrd's trumpet and Adams' baritone sax creates a unique, textured harmony that is both bold and refined. Tracks like 'Hush' and 'Shangri-La' highlight the band's cohesive interplay, with solos that are both distinct and beautifully integrated into the compositions. 'Requiem,' a standout piece penned by Hancock, offers a mid-tempo, gospel-tinged piano blues that allows Hancock to explore melodic space, supported by Byrd and Adams' plaintive lines and Warren's resonant bowed bass solo. What sets Royal Flush apart is Byrd's understated leadership, allowing each musician to shine while maintaining a unified sound. The result is an album rich in melody, brimming with the synergy of seasoned players and a young, innovative pianist on the rise.

The album kicks off with a blazing rendition of Dizzy Gillespie's iconic piece - which lends its name to the LP - while the rest of the set highlights original compositions from the new band members. Their album Little Giant, originally released in 1970 as part of Victor's Japanese Jazz series, remains a key highlight in their extensive catalog. This release features the talents of notable composers and arrangers, including Masao Yagi, Kiyoshi Yamaya, Norio Maeda, and Masahiko Sato, alongside innovative arrangements of works by Oliver Nelson, a close collaborator. The albums intricate and bold arrangements reveal the band's exceptional performance caliber. The track 'Little Giant' radiates coolness, while 'Dark Horse' exudes strength. Review: Tension sees Ethio-jazz innovator Mulatu Astatke join forces with Tel Aviv's Hoodna Orchestra, creating a vibrant fusion of Astatke's signature sound with the orchestra's Afro funk dynamism. This collaboration is a masterclass in blending classic Ethio-jazz with contemporary influences. The album kicks off with 'Tension,' a track that infuses Astatke's enchanting vibraphone with a powerful rhythm section, driven by Matan Assayag's energetic drumming and a compelling brass motif. 'Major' later introduces a joyous, swinging groove, showcasing the orchestra's chemistry and Drabkin's stellar organ solo. Tracks like 'Hatula' and 'Yashan' capture a blend of intricate melodies and traditional Ethio-jazz flavours, while 'Delilah' reverently nods to Mulatu's early Latin-jazz roots. The album concludes with 'Dung Gate', a slow, mesmerising piece featuring Birenbaum's layered percussion and the brass section's evocative presence. Tension stands out as both a tribute to Astatke's legacy and a groundbreaking exploration in Ethio-jazz, marking a high point in the Hoodna Orchestra's evolving sound.

Review: Solar Unity Ensemble's Upstream is an exploration of music's transient nature, capturing spontaneous moments of improvisation that reach beyond the notes themselves. The album masterfully intertwines acoustic and electric textures into a sonic experience that embodies the fluidity of sound, mirroring the creative journey toward its origin. The album begins with 'Emergence,' setting the tone, followed by the reflective 'Mantra.' Side-2 ushers in the ethereal 'Passing Nimbus' and the meditative 'Shallow Water.' The journey intensifies with 'Didn't Know We Were Lost,' shifts into 'Mitha pt. 1,' peaks with the powerful 'Impact,' and gently concludes with 'Didn't Know We Were Found.' Upstream is a collaborative creation between Roope Niemela and Henri Ijas, who together contribute an impressive array of instruments. Their recording sessions, spread across several years and locations in Finland, reflect the meticulous care and creativity poured into this project. The album's physical production is equally thoughtful, with vinyl mastered by Ilkka Harjula, and covers screen-printed in Helsinki. Sami Sanpakkila's artwork, "Quasar 3C273," adds a visual dimension that complements the album nicely too.

This double album set brings together some of the most influential tracks from the 1970s and 1980s, highlighting the label's pivotal role in revitalising the Japanese jazz scene. Founded by Takeshi Fujii, TBM aimed to be Japan's answer to Blue Note, and it succeeded by delivering impeccable sound quality and showcasing innovative talent. With standout artists like Tsuyoshi Yamamoto and Isao Suzuki, this compilation features exceptional performances, such as 'Nardis' by Masabumi Kikuchi, 'A Green Caterpillar' by Masaru Imada Trio, and 'Feel Like Makin' Love' by Isao Suzuki Sextet. The selection spans ballads, bebop, and more avant-garde sounds, reflecting the label's diverse offerings. What sets this compilation apart is the meticulous mastering by Isao Kikuchi and cutting by Katsutoshi Kitamura, ensuring the original recordings' clarity is preserved. The gatefold packaging, complete with an OBI strip and liner notes by Takao Ogawa, adds historical depth, making this a great set to have. This collection encapsulates the vibrant spirit of "Wa Jazz" and also shows TBM's profound influence on Japanese jazz.

Review: Marysia Osu's debut album, harp, beats & dreams, is a stunning example of her musical evolution and innovative spirit. Known for her role in Levitation Orchestra and as a Brownswood 'Bubblers' graduate, Marysia blends her classical roots with contemporary exploration in this enchanting release. Originating from Poland and enriched by her musical education in London, she has embraced the harp with profound artistry, now intertwining it with electronic elements and personal introspection. The album opens with the hypnotic 'seatime,' a journey through coastal reverie that celebrates self-acceptance and inner harmony. It continues with 'care to care,' where Levitation Orchestra's Plumm adds ethereal vocals, advocating for self-care and personal space. The track 'memento mori' features YUIS's illuminating flute, echoing stoic reflections on life's impermanence. Marysia's return to the piano and spontaneous clarinet experiments, inspired by a vivid dream, add depth to her soundscape. The clarinet's breath symbolises life's essence, bridging body and mind, enhancing the album's introspective quality. Marysia Osu's debut is a an exciting debut, offering a serene escape thanks to her talent and unique vision.

Review: Balance, the third studio album by acclaimed bassist and composer Daniel Casimir, radiates "Big Band Energy," masterfully blending Classical, Jazz, and cinematic influences. Balance is a tribute to the legacy of big band composition, honoring its historical roots while weaving in modern perspectives. The project ambitiously merges the robust sounds of a big band with the rich tones of a string section, drawing inspiration from Wayne Shorter's Emanon, which profoundly impacted Casimir during the album's creation. Building on the success of his previous album, Boxed In, which featured a jazz quintet and a mini chamber orchestra, Balance is Casimir's most ambitious work yet. It features 26 musicians, including prominent figures from the UK jazz scene like Cassie Kinoshi, Nubya Garcia, Rosie Turton, and Binker, alongside the London Contemporary Orchestra's stunning string section. Recorded at Livingston Studios in November 2022, the album's intricate production process began with the foundational trio of piano, bass, and drums, followed by brass, woodwinds, and strings. Vocalists Zola Marcelle and Ria Moran lend their powerful voices to the final recording day, adding the finishing touches to this masterpiece. Notable tracks include 'Music Not Numbers,' a rallying cry for musicians to stay true to their creativity despite streaming culture, and 'Search for Goldilocks,' which delves into the quest for life's perfect balance. Balance is a bold, innovative journey that elevates Casimir's musical vision to new heights.

Review: At 88, Ghanaian highlife and afrobeat legend Ebo Taylor made his first-ever journey to the US, performing in the Jazz Is Dead concert series. These shows, which sold out across the country, led to an unexpected and electrifying collaboration between Taylor, Adrian Younge, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. The result is a psychedelic afrobeat album, recorded at Younge's Linear Labs studio, that's bound to thrill fans of both classic West African funk and afrobeat purists. The album channels the raw energy of Ebo's 70s recordings, with swirling horns, fuzzed-out guitars, and the unmistakable polyrhythmic percussion that made Taylor a revolutionary figure in African music. "Collaborating with Ebo Taylor is a bucket-list accomplishment," says Younge, likening the experience to working with another afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti. The analog recording style, embracing the gritty textures of 70s Africa, gives this album an authenticity that's impossible to ignore. Tracks like 'Beye Bu, Beye Ba' and 'Kusi Na Sibo' exemplify Taylor's profound lyricism. His reflections on love, spirituality, and gratitude echo his decades-long career, while the ensemble of Ghanaian vocalists adds a spiritual depth that transports listeners back to his prime. Ebo's son, Henry Taylor, also features, proving himself a formidable talent in his own right. This album is not just a nod to the past but a crowning achievement in Taylor's enduring legacy. For connoisseurs of afrobeat, it's a standout moment in both Ebo's catalogue and the growing canon of the Jazz Is Dead series.

Review: KSB stands for Kashmere Stage Band group that was initially founded by Conrad O. Johnson. He was at the heart of the group which is surely one of the most accomplished student outfits of all time. They hailed from the eponymous Kashmere High School in Houston, Texas, and were active in the 1960s on until the late 1970s. They related a number of albums which only get got pressed up a maximum of 1000 times so have become cult favs and hard to find treasures. P-VINE however changes all that with a series of limited reissues of their most renowned albums, including this one, Out Of Gas But Still Burning, as well as some others which have never actually been on wax before.

Review: Doo's Blues by Dusko Goykovich, released by Sdban Records, offers a glimpse into the Serbian jazz maestro's formative years through a collection of previously unreleased radio recordings. This compilation features Goykovich's transition into a leading figure in European jazz, harnessing his distinctive sound that blends Balkan folk influences with modern jazz and blues. The album highlights sessions from 1967 recorded at BRT (Belgian Radio & TV), featuring Goykovich in various settings. These include performances with Belgian vibraphonist Fats Sadi's quartet, the BRT Jazzorkest, and an international quintet featuring notable musicians like Bent Jaedig and Scott Bradford. Each track reveals Goykovich's innovative approach, merging melancholic Balkan melodies with sophisticated jazz rhythms. Doo's Blues exemplifies Goykovich's unique contribution to jazz, offering an essential listen for enthusiasts interested in the intersection of European folk and jazz traditions. Compiled by Lander Lenaerts, this release not only celebrates Goykovich's legacy but also enriches the jazz canon with rare, historically significant recordings.

Review: Duke Pearson's 1964 gem Wahoo! is a shining showcase of his skills as a pianist, composer, and bandleader. Writing for a sextet, Pearson brought together an exceptional lineup featuring Donald Byrd on trumpet, James Spaulding on alto sax, Joe Henderson on tenor, Bob Cranshaw on bass and Mickey Roker on drums. The result is a set of evocative originals, like the tender 'Amanda', the mysterious 'Bedouin', and the hard-hitting 'ESP (Extrasensory Perception)'. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition does justice to Pearson's work, offering an all-analog, stereo mix mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes. Pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal, it's got everything an audiophile could hope for. Whether it's the energetic swing of 'Fly Little Bird Fly' or the deeper hues of 'Farewell Machelle', every track radiates Pearson's unmistakable touch, balancing sophistication with soul.
