Review: Art Pepper was regarded as one of the world's greatest alto-sax players by the time of his death in 1982. This album, Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section, is widely regarded as one of his finest works, although legend has it he was only informed about the session the morning of recording and arrived unprepared. He was playing with a strong band - at the time they were Miles Davis' rhythm section no less. Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums, and Art Pepper out front giving his all on a sax that was reportedly in bad shape. Such scenes are iconic music made of.

Review: The 'Diplomats Of Soul' are DJs Mike Allin and Ralph Tee, who made a name for themselves by spinning only the most waxen soul bits across all of Asia's highest-end luxury bars and hotels. A diggers' delight, their eponymous label most recently lays claim to Grady Tate's 'Lady Love', a naturalistic, cinematic slice of soul about nothing less than the birds and the bees. It's pitted against the low-swinging 'Moondance', a feverish blues bourbon showing off both Tate's classic singing and drumming. The Diplomats have certainly quelled international tensions between soul pushers on this one.

  4. Mantra
Review: Deeper into Alice Coltrane's catalogue - beyond 'Journey In Satchidananda' or 'Lord Of Lords' - comes this classic bit with cosmic bandleader Pharoah Sanders and saxophonist visionary Joe Henderson. 'Ptah The El Daoud' was initially recorded and released in 1970, and now gets a reissue via Audio Clarity, whose aim with this one is to bring the listener a perfect replica of the original. Made in the basement of her then house in Long Island, New York, this is a light, clarinetting affair; with the track 'Turiya & Ramakrishna' sonically opining Coltrane's Vedantic Hindu views on consciousness, and the seminal 'Blue Nile' nailing sinister serialist moods in their trilling, dark saxophone bits. Of note is that Joe Henderson was recorded on the left channel throughout, while Sanders was on the right; Coltrane noted this decision was intentional, with the two artists' disciplines being so different as to represent the opposing sides of the brain.

Review: Amanda Whiting released her first music back in 2007, but it's been in recent years the accomplished UK harp player has developed a working relationship with Jazzman. N doubt a response to the rude health of UK jazz, 2020 saw the release of Little Sunflower and last year she delivered After Dark. Now Whiting makes it a hat trick with Lost In Abstraction, a stunning release which shows off her gift as a performer and composer across 10 vignettes. There's a mellow mood to the music on offer here, and if you have a weakness for the lilting sound of the harp in a jazz context, be sure not to miss this exquisite album.

Review: Roy Ayers staked a bold claim by flaunting the fact that he had 'Reach[ed] The Highest Pleasure' back in June '77. Unfortunately for us back then, this lifetime hedonistic milestone - documented in instrumental funk form - was shelved for reasons unknown beyond simple artistic oversight. As said, this slick solo instrumental for drums, bass and vibraphone is a perfect soul-jazz, chillout trifecta, one for the rarities collectors.

Review: The legacy of Pharoah Sanders is long and winding, and it continues to flourish, but there are a few key recordings which elevate him to the god tier of jazz musicians. Karma is one such album, released in 1969 and lighting the touch paper for the spiritual jazz explosion. The half-hour epic 'The Creator Has A Master Plan' is one of the most life-affirming, soul-enriching listening experiences you could hope to have. Behind Sanders' exquisite tenor sax work lies Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, James Spaulding on flute, Billy Hart on drums and yet more players and singers feeding into the righteous ecstasy. It's a listening experience like no other, and it inspired some of the most beautiful tributaries in jazz to spring forth in the ensuing decades.

He is a member of the first Godwana Orchestra and was on Halsall's debut long player 'Sending My Love. but now really steps out with a sound that is all his own on Cloud 10. Review: Domi and JD Beck are already taking the world by storm - just clock the irreverent but oh-so-sweet video to 'Smile', directed by Anderson .Paak and featuring cameos from the likes of Thundercat. The duo met by chance jamming at a NAMM convention and soon struck upon a partnership which took their serious musical skills and injected them with the kind of flippant, fun-seeking attitude that breathes new life into traditional music. They've sat in with Herbie Hancock and backed Ariana Grande, Mac Demarco and more, and now their debut album lands on Paak's Apeshit label in conjunction with Blue Note. Not Tight is cool down to the very last drop, but crucially it doesn't take itself too seriously. Domi and Beck know they've got the skills, and you can tell they're having an absolute blast messing with the jazz rulebook while delivering some impossibly sweet grooves.

Review: A remarkable feat in the world of jazz 're-collaboration', LA's Jazz Is Dead series focuses on putting younger and older jazz artists in the same studio, producing compilation albums of new and original music made between these fresh faces and old golds. For the 11th instalment of the series, former A Tribe Called Quest member and label founder Ali Shaheed Muhammad links up with composer Adrian Younge for an executively-produced slew of collaborations, with the likes of Lonnie Liston Smith, Tony Allen, Jean Carne and Katalyst in tow. And judging from the album's slick and knife-edge musicianship, we'll happily assert that Muhammad and Younge are the DJ Khaleds of jazz, fostering collabs we never could have dreamt of.

Review: There's no doubt that Matthew Halsall is a modern British jazz great. Like the giants of jazz who came before him, Halsall is also prolific - a creative whirlwind who releases at least one album a year without fail. His latest release, The Temple Within, is not a full-length but rather a mini album - and one composed with his latest collective of Manchester-based musicians, during improvisations and rehearsals for their weekly residency at Yes. It's an utterly lovely four-tracker all told. It sees Halsall and his contributing musicians opt for a sultry, summery sound rooted in spiritual jazz and progressive jazz, with (very) occasional nods towards deep electronic music. From start to finish, it's a thing of great beauty.

Review: 'Liberated Brother' might just refer to Weldon Irvine's liberation from the trappings of fame. While this debut album of this, originally released in 1972, was made around the same time as his come-up with Nina Simone as her bandleader, Irvine was not as impacted by publicity or subject to the same degree of pop culture notoriety. But just because a spark burns brightly, doesn't make it the most effervescent; this first LP charts the multi-instrumentalist's futuristic frolicks through funk-jazz, fusion and soul, all distilled into a romantic 8-tracker of trilling pianos ('Liberated Brother') and moody noir jams ('Gloria'). Hot off the plate with a reissue by Japanese label P-Vine, this is an exclusive obi-strip version not many will get their mitts on; it could still be you, though.

Review: It was when Makaya McCraven linked up with International Anthem around 2015 he became an artist transcending the jazz scene's tangle of singers and players. Since then he's evolved his craft from album to album, project to project, reaching this undeniable achievement of a record that places him at the forefront of modern jazz. Nearly seven years in the making, In These Times is the product of McCraven's striving to create a personal stamp, leaning in on his own rhythmic language of time-signature trickery and unusual arrangements, steering large-scale orchestral ensembles and elevating his craft in every way he can. For all the considered science behind the sound, it lands as an incredible natural experience full of cascading drums, ascendant flutes, lilting strings and a whole cornucopia of talented musicians playing to a striking creative vision.

Review: You may have caught the striking quality of Ego Ella May and Theon Cross' lead single for Blue Note Re:imagined II, and now the full compilation has arrived. For such a long-standing, heritage label, Blue Note have recognised the renewed moment jazz is having and responded with an exciting look into those artists forging new paths. Given the importance of tradition and roots within jazz, it's fascinating to see how a new generation tackle totemic works from Blue Note's gargantuan history. From Nubiyan Twist to Conor Albert, Maya Delilah to Reuben James, the featured artists serve as a crucial primer of what's good in jazz right now, and the hit rate is high from start to finish.

Review: 52 years after it was first released in 1970, Hermeto Pascoal's self-titled debut long player remains a remarkable one. It was born in the A&R studios in New York and features a heavyweight cast of collabs including Ron Carter, Hubert Laws, Joe Farrel and Googie Coppola. There are even some stars of the Brazilian jazz scene of the time making appearances such as Airto Moreira and Flora Purim, who also took care of production. From elevator jazz tunes like 'Hermeto' to laid back and sunny bliss-outs like 'Flor Do Amor' the sis another jewel in the crown of Far Out.

Review: Between 1965 and 1975, self-taught jazz musician Francois de Roubaix had a fruitful career composing and recording for television and film. Even if much of his work was commercial, his relative freedom from the constraints of formal training guided him to experiment with tone and timbre as well as the early advent of synthesisers and drum machines. Of course, he also had the instinct for catchy, memorable melodic hooks, but the real magic of his craft, captured on this compilation, lay in the risks and personality he was still able to instill within the music. From rare TV themes to commercial jingles, this is the most considered collection of de Roubaix's work to date, presented in a gatefold sleeve with liner notes about the background to the music.

Review: Weldon Irvine's impact on jazz and hip-hop cannot be overstated; his influence on pianists and beatmakers alike is felt throughout generations, just as strong in the present day as it was back in his time. It makes fitting sense, then, for P-Vine to be reissuing Irvine's 1973 vision 'Time Capsule' in EP form. Originally released as an album, the full LP contained spoken word musings on social issues from Irvine himself. This EP, meanwhile, contains just the music and is rather intended for DJs to work into their sets.

Review: Larry Young was an American jazz organist, whose claim to fame lay in his use of the Hammond B3 organ in a genre context it wasn't regularly used for: post-bop. 'Unity' came out in 1965, and saw him collaborate with trumpeter Woody Shaw, saxophonist Joe Henderson, and drummer Elvin Jones. The aim was to transcend each artist's tendency towards individualism, producing a stunning mood piece that brought out the organ in a surreptitious yet noticeable context. Young's playing renders the instrument popping, bright and vibrant.

Taking their name from the Carl Sagan novel Contact (the Vega system), Influences from Swedish fiddle to Indian Classical are woven into a minimized tapestry of ambient instrumental sounds. Verbed-out folk jazz for your pleasure.

Review: Keys maestro Ahmad Jamal was something of a lost bebopper, giving penance to a genre that was otherwise mired in noodling and relentless velocity. Placing artistic integrity over the spotlight was a trait he maintained over the course of an entire career, earning him a reputation as something of a jazz angel. This repress of an early live show in Paris - backed by Frank Gant on drums and Jamil Nasser on double bass - effortlessly brings a trans-Atlantic mood across the pond from New York to France, with Jamal sternly prodding both the white-and-black ivories, and our moods.

Review: Since debuting in 2018 with a tremendous cover version of Todd Terje nu-disco fave 'Inspector Norse', Japanese duo Cruisic have proved particularly adept at delivering dancefloor flavoured jazz and jazz-funk takes on classic cuts. Jazz Room boss Paul Murphy has spotted this and has decided to offer-up a double A-side featuring two of his favourites from their slim but impressive catalogue. On the A-side you'll find their 2019 version of Azymuth's 'Jazz Carnival', a breezy, gently pitched down, sun-splashed take that turns it from a high-octane thriller into a carnival-ready jazz-funk shuffler. Turn to the flip for the pair's arguably even better cover of 808 State's 'Pacfific 707', which they successfully re-imagine as a head-nodding Balearic jazz-funk gem. In a word: essential!

Review: Good luck finding an original copy of Furusawa Ryojiro's Racco. Originally released in 1977, this rare treat of mellow gold is a highly sought after gem in the second hand jazz market. All you need do is hear the sprightly Rhodes gliding over lightly brushed cymbals and meandering basslines on 'Cum-Cum' to realise the hype is more than justified. This is an album of soft, inviting tones to quite simply melt into, featuring Hideaki Mochizuki on bass, Toshiyoki Daitoku on keys and Tomoki Takahashi on tenor sax, while Ryojiro holds it down on drums. If you're serious about the more tender end of jazz, you won't want to miss this while it's around.

Review: Originally banding together and recording this stunning album in 1978, Mabumi Yamaguchi's Quartet comprises the man himself on sax, Ichiro Doi on keys, Hideo Sekine on drums and Ikuo Sakurai on bass. Hailing from the late 70s scene in Japan that also gave us the likes of Furusawa Ryojiro, this four-strong set of players take the measured approach on Leeward, opening up with the slow and spacious climes of 'Dawn' before Doi takes centre stage on the melancholic, reflective 'Dewdrop'. There's a more urgent energy to the B side, with 'Distant Thuder' in particular rolling at a mean clip and Sakurai's bass becoming an insistent force in the proceedings. Once again the good folk at Teichiku are doing a great job of preserving and reviving Japanese jazz history for newer generations to discover.

Review: Chip Wickham came up in the 00s laying down sax and flute for The Pharcyde, Saxophonist and flautist Chip Wickham has delivered some great albums over the last few years, with his most recent outing 2020's soul-jazz, jazz-funk, fusion and jazz-dance set Blue To Red being particularly potent. Cloud 10, his first outing on long-time friend Matthew Halsall's Gondwana Records, is arguably even better. Richly evocative and quietly soulful with roots in modal hard-bop and spiritual jazz, the album's eight tracks naturally showcase his expressive and impressive sax and flute playing, but also draw on Latin rhythms, vintage British jazz, and the kind of woozy, slow-motion soundscapes that sound so good on a hot summer's day. Impeccably performed and produced with no flab or filler, Cloud 10 could be the album that propels Wickham into the jazz stratosphere.

Review: We'll never tire of the incredible Brazil45 series on Mr Bongo, which has provided an authoritative window into the rich history of 60s and 70s grooves from South America. Here's a missing joint from the series which took some time to come to fruition - a split release featuring Brazilian Boys on the A side and Rubinho E Mauro Assumpcao on the B. 'Super Herois' is an obscure slice of off-kilter, psych tinged funk from 1975 that has the kind of individual sound which could find favour with a lot of different DJs. 'Tudo Ai' has a more recognisable samba shuffle, but much like the A side there's a subtle twist in the sound which leans towards blues rock and jazz, locking down on the rhythm and creating a low-key party starter in its own unique way.

A follow-up album was recorded but never released, locked away in the Flying Dutchman archives until today. This three-track avant-garde session features the same players from The Giant Is Awakened - Arthur Blythe on alto sax, Everett Brown Jr on drums and David Bryant and Walter Savage Jr on bass. It wasn't long after this Tapscott retreated from the mainstream music industry to record in a low key fashion and eventually establish the Pan-Afrikan People's Arkestra, but The Quintet captures a special moment in time never heard before a dream come true for Tapscott fans and jazz lovers of all stripes.

Review: This reissue brings this cult record to wax for the first time. It was Eric Dolphy's last studio album and one that is often held up as a perfect example of mid-60s post-bop. It was recorded in 1964 and just a month or so later the artist passed all too soon. All five compositions from the original quintet album are presented here in the same order as they were originally but with new artwork. The record has some big free jazz energy a la Peter Brotzmann Tentet and wild man Mats Gustafsson on baritone sax yacks that up.

Review: Cal Green is a soul guitarist from Houston, Texas who isn't afraid to get as emotional as can be. Here is one of his standout cuts which was made with R&B organist Charles Kynard plus jazz heavyweights Tracy Wright and Billy Moore gets a long overdue repress. 'Tripping' and the reverse side opener 'Sieda' are Cal Green originals that come with hooky melodies that makes perfect jazz-funk listening. The infectious groover will carry you away in no time and this limited edition reuse, the first ever, is sure to fly out so do not sleep.

Review: Moons Of Jupiter is the debut album from Daylight Robbery, a South London-born, Frankfurt-raised producer now residing in Brooklyn. His sound is instantly appealing and easy to latch onto, striking a note somewhere between jazz and hip-hop summed up succinctly by Melting Pot as Nujabes and Pete Rock remixing a lost Roy Ayers album arranged by David Axelrod. Swooning string sections, narrative flourishes and head-nodding drums abound, and there's a few tidbits for the diggers to pick up on. If you love the romantic lilt of Library music classic 'Tropicola' by Stringtronics then check 'Elara' and you won't be disappointed.

Review: Melbourne-rooted Ziggy Zeitgeist started his future jazz collective Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange in London, but now it's firmly established in Berlin and you can hear it in the vibe on this new record. Striking a sweet spot between the strict 4/4 pulse of the German capital's cultural calling card and the expressive lilt of spiritual jazz, Zeitgeist and co. have created a tight new extrapolation of jazz's modern flirtations with club music. Let 'Galaxy' unfurl around you, and you could quite picture being mid-flow on the dancefloor as much as the elevated musicianship cavorts around the motorik pulse, even if the band don't need to rely on a kick drum to guide them.

We Get Requests (Acoustic Sounds)
Cat: 380758 8. Rel: 19 Aug 22
Review: Oscar Peterson had a steady thing going with Verve which carried him through his early career, but after a 14-year stretch with the label he wrapped things up with this album. The jazz pianist was joined by Ray Brown on double bass and Ed Thigpen on drums, between them tackling a number of pop songs, bossa nova, film themes and standards. Producer Jim Davis was committed to capturing the live feeling of the band and approached the recording sessions in October 1964 as such. This reissue follows Verve's exacting attention to detail, with transfers from analogue tape and presented in deluxe gatefold packaging.
