Review: At times it borders on twee, in other moments it has that anger slant of a pure renegade. At no point does it sound in anything short of sweet. In many ways, Warm Chris isn't so much an artist album as it is an album by an artist determined not to sound like themselves, with New Zealander Harding interpreting no less than ten personalities on this latest record.

In theory, that might sound disjointed and lacking in direction, but in truth nothing could be further from the mark. From the lilt of 'Bubbles' to the subtly rousing 'Passion Babe', this is a place where borderline fantastical folk meets alternative rock without sharp edges, but nevertheless packed with personality. In short, album number four and things just keep getting better.

Old Peel (3:21)

Review: Aldous Harding, known to some as Hannah Sian Topp, might be New Zealand's answer to Cate le Bon, although we really don't like to draw reductive comparisons and consider everyone to be completely individual, even if they do both have a sweet and tender but unkept psychedelic atmosphere about their rock 'n' roll offerings. The kind of tracks that make you feel timeless, Harding is perhaps more gentile and less likely to explode into rugged riffs, but nevertheless the similarities in vocal tones are quite clear.

That's certainly no bad thing, as this single proves. Harding's voice is perfectly tempered, almost hushed, and yet only the strongest and most determined could even try to hear past it. Instrumentally, Old Peel is an infectious piece of work to say the least, the kind of thing you think you've heard before and yet are convinced you've actually heard very little like it.

Review: Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You is a truly adventurous and sprawling new double album from Big Thief. For the record, Adrianne Lenker, Max Oleartchik, Buck Meek and James Krivchenia tap into their own personal growth as people and musicians across a quartet of recording sessions around the United States. In all they made 45 tuns in four months and distilled them to the 20 presented here. There are experimental sounds, psychedelic moments and prepared acoustic guitars and huge stomping beats adding up to a variety of moods and styles.

Review: Big Thief's 2016 debut album Masterpiece has been newly remastered by Heba Kadry for this reissue via 4AD - the first time it's been reissued and comes on eco-vinyl. Fans will know the music is rooted in Adrianne Lenker's songs and "paints in vivid tones the process of harnessing pain, loss, and love, while simultaneously letting go, looking into your own eyes through someone else's, and being okay with the inevitability of death. " Heavy stuff for sure and the music is indeed emotion with Buck Meek on guitar, Max Oleartchik on bass, and James Krivchenia on drums all bringing it to life.

Review: There's no doubt that Bing & Ruth, an ever-changing chamber music ensemble helmed by David Moore, and dedicated to blurring the boundaries between Reichian minimalism, early Eno style ambient and neo-classical music, is a unique proposition. To date, they've released a number of superb albums for Backward Music and RVNG INTL. Here, Moore has brought the project to long established independent 4AD. No Home For The Mind adds a few nods to jazz, particularly in Moore's piano work, to the usual template, resulting in a set that's beguiling, evocative and emotion-rich in equal measure. Given Moore's classical background - he started the project while at NYC's New School - you'd expect it to be brilliantly composed and arranged (and, yes, it is), but it's the quality of his reverb and delay-laden production that really catches the ear.

Review: "The album that put Bon Iver on the map is back, this time on limited white vinyl stretched across two LPs. This originally minimal, heartbreaking 9-tracker - that dealt with the shock of Vernon's best friend Heath Ledger's death, among other events - is now rounded off with 5 alternate recordings, 3 of which are stripped-down live takes on the album tracks 'Wash', 'Beth/Rest' and 'Hinnom, TX'. The remaining two come from elsewhere; 'I Can't Make You Love Me' and 'Babys', like the others, were recorded at AIR Studios by Justin Vernon and his bandmate Sean Carey, on grand pianos and vocals only.

Review: Lucinda Chua is currently based in South London and is a singer, songwriter, composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist. She crafts elegant and emotive music mainly using her voice and cello, plenty of effects units and draws on ambient for her inspiration. What results is atmospheric and intimate music that is utterly enchaining as this album on 4AD proves across ten tracks that come after she spent an intensive period studying Chinese dance forms. Lead single 'Echo' is a pop song about ancestral trauma that walks a thin line between respect for the past and the hope and freedom of a new future. It's captivating indeed.

Review: Daughter's third full-length and first in seven years is one of those hotly anticipated albums that doesn't disappoint on arrival. It's fronted once more by Elena Tonra, a singer, songwriter, and guitarist who asks what it means to be separated from loved ones and from yourself across 12 new tracks. The musical palette is broadened in those tunes, no doubt in part because members of the band have moved countries and cities, to make for a mix of love and longing with plenty of warm soul throughout. There are intense moments like 'Wish I Could Cross The Sea' and modern love stories like 'Future Lover' both providing real standouts. A great return.

Review: If you're looking for an album perfectly suited to warm, steamy summer days, we'd enthusiastically recommend Erika de Casier's sophomore set, Sensational. Arriving two years on from her critically lauded debut, Essentials, it sees the Portugal-born Danish artist deliver a warming and tactile take on modern soul that draws heavily on the 1980s "quiet storm" sounds of Sade, loved-up '90s R&B, skittish future pop, cheery two-step garage and the kind sunset-ready ambient soundscapes that were once the forte of the late, great Jose Padilla. Musically, it's like a gently cooling summer breeze -albeit with added industrial-strength sub-bass and glistening lead lines - with Casier's alternately breathy, hushed and super-sweet vocals adding the perfect finishing touch.

Review: Erika De Casier has been on the Juno radar for a while. She is a Danish artist who has lent her voice to some killer dance cuts, but when in solo mode she is a new school neo-soul queen. Her vocal style is quiet and subtle, vulnerable and honest, and the music that is produced around it only heightens that sense of late night intrigue. This second album is one of tender sound and confessional songs, with closely mic'd whispers and softly spoken words defying most tracks. It's deep, richly rewarding and another fine accomplishment from this contemporary star.

Review: The preaching sirens of Deerhunter return, long has everyone been waiting, since the band's Fading Frontier LP of 2015. The group have moved on from the pinky-pop nostalgia they've described as their last album, and moved into and towards a darker and more intensifying feel. The Atlanta group's eighth full-length in total finds itself tripping out on klaviers and chant-like numbers as heard in "Element" and the rickety jingle of album opener "Death In Midsummer". While there's some crooked-eye positivity to be found in the James Dean referencing "Plains", the masterwork of the band's ambient and cinematic scope remains as strong as ever, and alongside Bradford Cox's undeniable haunt, vocal contributions and extra (subtle) hints of subversive nihilism come from Cate Le Bon and White Fence's Tim Presley.

Review: Dry Cleaning's second album Stumpwork has already been met with rave reviews. It finds the band stand apart from their peers with a hard-to-categorise sound that goes way beyond their lazy post-punk assignation. The four-piece guitar gang with Florence Shaw up top veer from singing and speaking across everything from jangle pop to woozy ambient, stoner rock and spiky post-punk. The is a record defined by its juxtapositions with bass heavy funk offset by sax-powered rock on tunes like 'Hot Penny Day' and slower riffs on 'Driver's Story' moving into shoegaze territory. Essential stuff.

It's safe to say that more than a few people have been waiting more than a few months for this one to finally arrive. Dry Cleaning already made a pretty significant impact with efforts like that ode to Meghan Markle, 'Magic of Meghan', a track that not everyone will agree with in terms of sentiment but most seemed united in musical love for, and 'Goodnight', which firmly positioned them in the most exciting end of British punk.

New Long Leg continues on that fine form, and in many ways elevates the game significantly. Offering ten songs that set the band's proverbial stall out clearly, the record is a demand not to be taken too seriously, even if the music itself feels like the end result of more than a decade of serious fine-tuning and boundary-pushing on the part of the band members, who lay claim to past endeavours with hardcore and indie bands, and in the visual arts.

Review: Four years on from the release of sixth studio album As Long As You Are, American synth-pop/alt-rock fusionists Future Islands return with full-length number seven. People Who Aren't There Any More sees them reunite with regular collaborator Steve Wright and mixer Chris Coady, whose production on 2014's Singles - the band's most polished and arguably greatest album - was widely praised. Lyrically focused on being lovestruck and feeling lovelorn - wearily but forcefully delivered by frontman Samuel T Herring - the songs are strong and memorable. Musically, the sound worlds created - think stylish synths, immersive electronic textures, low-slung basslines and indie-rock guitars - match the disillusioned and emotionally fragile words, giving the set a coherent theme and sonic vision..

Listening to Helado Negro feels like you've finally had a shower, got changed, and made your way to the wooden veranda of your Air B&B on a lush tropical beachfront after a hard day adventuring. We're not going to tell you what you're drinking, though - it wouldn't be in keeping with Far In's attitude.

If all that sounds a little vague and abstract, let's move to the music itself. Slowly, woozily strolling out with 'Wake Up Tomorrow', this is downtempo, late night shadows dancing on walls, blues-tinged, jazz-infused chill out made with real instruments and plenty of emotions, with the odd slice of relaxed, warm, slow dance throw in for good measure. It's nice, beautiful and incredibly intelligent stuff, ideal for any occasion, and out of place nowhere.

Review: Having come to light through her captivating Movement LP and a series of singles for Rvng Intl, Holly Herndon is a shining example of the ground that can be covered through the academic approach to electronic music production. That so much of her distinctive sound is powered by the canny processing of her own voice only adds to the impact, and so it is on her follow up album which lands on indie giant 4AD. The drama and shocking sound design is palpable at every turn, with more noticeably song-based structures coming through at times, only to be side-swiped by brutal drum programming at others. With a style that no-one else could dream of coming close to, Herndon has confirmed herself to be amongst the great electronic artists of our times.

Review: Jenny Hval on 4AD? Don't mind if I do. Hval's work has always been thought provoking (see 2016's 'Bitches Blood', a concept album about blood, menstruation, schlock horror and Virgina Woolf). During lockdown, she found herself reflecting on what it means to be an artist without the art. If you boil it down, she explains, you're left with "just me", but what does that mean?

And it's this idea that she explores on 'Classic Object', her eighth long-player. A published novellist, Hval wanted to tell simple stories - sometimes about her life, sometimes not, and as on the autobiography-meets-nurses-reciting-French philosophy tale of 'American Coffee' sometimes both. But, as she points out, a song isn't just words. "The reason we have melodies is to step into the dark and jump off cliffs," she offers. "And that's what we do in life too. These jumps - like in 'American Coffee'- detail what it feels like to experience things."

A record of many layers that serves up much to think about as well as enjoy. This is Jenny Hval after all.

Review: Given his rapid ascent from pioneering 'purple' producer to major player, it's perhaps little surprise to find that Joker's long-awaited (and much hyped) debut album sees the Bristolian youngster mixing typically funk-laden synth-step jams with moments of soaring dubstep pop and hip-hop funk. While it's the latter that have propelled his rise, it's the former on which he built his career. It's notable, then, that the best moments on The Vision are those that draw most from his early purple work; the contemporary P-funk of "Level 6", cyber-funk of "Milky Way" and gorgeous Herbie Hancock-does-Purple grooves of closer "Magic Causeway" are amongst the best things he's done.

It's been two years since their Do Hollywood LP and the pair - with the help of their parents (really) - deliver 15 tracks that according to the band tell a "heartbreaking coming of age story of Shane, a pure of heart chimpanzee raised as a human boy as he comes to terms with the obstacles of life." Satire, irony, haircuts, glam rock. Yes, it's a musical...what, you didn't know?

Review: Originally released in 1992, Lush's second studio album really stuck a flag in the ground for the band. Having bestowed the 'mini LP' Scar on listeners three years earlier, at which point they became one of the first outfits to have the term shoegazing applied to their sound, it would take a full length offering to truly establish a framework for the outfit's approach to the (sub)genre. Spooky did just that, opening on the beautiful, grinding greatness of 'Stray', in many ways the record only builds intensity and grandeur from thereon in, providing a home for some of the most incredible moments of opiate indie rock you could ask for. Helped no end by the production of Cocteau Twins' Robin Guthrie, 31 years later it remains a landmark.

Review: In many ways, Lovelife represented a commercial high for British dream pop deities turned indie pogo set Lush. Reaching number eight in the UK album charts upon release, only the band's second album (technically their first full-length LP, with one compilation of singles and a mini-long player preceding it) managed to place higher, and while it was very much caught in a specific musical moment - shoegaze - it still felt rather experimental. Or maybe that's just true of the style overall. Regardless, leap four years into the future and things sound a lot different. Britpop's stranglehold on the charts was at max tought, and with their final album Lush jumped straight in with two feet. Clearly influenced by the high energy, big attitude ethic of the day, signs of which were evident on third album, Split, on Lovelife they managed to create one of the scene's defining albums, with anthems such as 'Ladykillers' and 'Ciao!' (featuring Jarvis Cocker, no less) among the highlights.

Review: Two years on from the release of their debut mini-album, Scar, Lush headed into the studio to record their first full-length proper, the critically acclaimed Spooky. One of the all-time great shoegaze-meets-dream-pop sets, it was notable not only for the immersive nature of the sound and the meditative effect of its hazy, layered guitars and vocals, but also the fact that it was produced by Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins. This reissue, which forms part of a series inaugurated by the band and remastering engineer Kevin Vanberger, offers a neat reminder of the album's timeless qualities, alongside a freshly cleaned and spruced-up sound that allows every single sonic element to shine.

Review: Lush's reissue series continues via a painstakingly remastered and sonically spruced-up edition of the band's second studio album, 1994's 'Split'. A very different album to its loose, immersive and shoegaze-fuelled predecessor, it saw the band join forces with producer Mike Hedges (celebrated for his work with The Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees) and opt for a more - in their words - "direct" sound. Of course, it was still Lush, so the layered guitars and vocals remained, albeit amongst a lightly expanded sound palette, more hooky riffs and an early Britpop vibe that delivered a subtle evolution from the band's more wide-eyed, sonically loved-up roots.

Review: Western Australian haircuts Methyl Ethel bring their surrealist wares back to London's 4AD for a second time, following up the Everything Is Forgotten LP of 2017. Spearheaded by Jake Webb and his somewhat androgynous vocal take, a most alluring factor of the band's music, the group continue to deliver a musical blend of avant synth and indie pop with swathes of emotion we will compare to Bat For Lashes, Hot Chip and even in some cases, Tool. Achieving huge success down under, and once slated as just another "psychedelic rock band from Perth" by the smirking editorials of the big smoke, this homespun album sees Webb's avant take on pop at the edge, or ahead of the curve, of mainstream listening; See the drama of "Post-Blue", the summery haze of "Real Tight" and the concoction of sounds to make Arcade Fire blush in "All The Elements".

Review: Britain is on the very cusp of the post-Thatcher era, mistakes not necessarily learnt from the past 11 years, but certainly evidence mounting for the failure of individualism and the importance of communities. Change is needed, and change is what the next decade would bring. Some of which began with this album, unveiled in 1989, now regarded among the best shoegaze outings of all time. The label doesn't sit that well with us, though. There's just too much else happening with Pale Saints' pacy, expansive and utterly compelling debut. Post punk accents, eruptions into (and introductions based on) pure noise, and surrealist dream pop. Presented here in a new collector's edition, featuring recordings from the band's seminal John Peel session and demos, we couldn't think of a band so deserving of being discovered by a new generation, and re-celebrated by those who were there at the time.

Review: Pale Saints' breakthrough album, In Ribbons, turns 30 years old this year and so the label that first put it out is looking back with this superb new anniversary edition. The album was a key driver in the shoegaze scene and became much loved for its ethereal sound. That has aged well here with bittersweet pop in tracks like 'Thread Of Light' as Meriel Barham's vocal delivery reaches through time and still hits the mark today. Musically the record blends bruising riffs and dreamy atmospherics and has been freshly remastered for this special commemorative CD edition which should appeal to fans old and new.

Review: Trompe Le Monde represents both Pixies at their urgent, catchy-but-underground best, and also their worst. If you were there you were there, as they say, and anyone who remembers this album dropping in 1991 will know exactly what we mean. At once the end of the first (and finest) chapter of one of America's greatest rock 'n' roll bands, in many ways this record is the apex of their early output, but it also signified the impending split that followed just months after their epic tour in support of this outing.

Of course, back then critics were divided as to what this one was about. For some, such as Rolling Stone magazine, it was "a pretty far cry from its predecessor", namely Doolittle. Others heralded Trompe as the finest moment in the band's history, finally surfacing into something that was commercially accessible. Either way it captures a moment in which underground garage met mainstream rock of that time. And it bangs.

Review: Caught somewhere between post-dubstep introspections and synth pop bombast, Sohn makes the leap to 4AD for a three-tracker of catchy melancholia defined in many different textures. There's rattling percussion and myriad layers of melody on the driving surge of "Bloodflows", using a song structure as a jump off point but really occupied with more textural concerns. "Warnings" is a more laid back affair bolstered by Purple synths and a half-step rhythm, built for slow-cruising for sensitive souls. "Oscillate" is perhaps the most overtly poppy turn on the record, the track's colourful arpeggios placed strategically around the bold vocal.

Review: 'Trust' is the London-born, Catalonia-based producer SOHN's folktronic meditation on the fear and trust involved in fatherhood. Made after a relocation to Spain, and a personal welcoming of new life into the world, it captures a change in mindset through humbled sonics. "I couldn't do it alone anymore," says the artist, "as I was missing community and friendship and life in the creative process." Such an ego-loss is paramount to any artist's development of self; 'M.I.A.' is one such example of this, describing the artist looking back on his past self through the other side of a nervous breakdown.

Review: Brooklyn based songwriter Mackenzie Scott brings us her third album as Torres, having gained acclaim and attention since her debut in 2013. 'Three Futures' is an immediate and mature set of songs about femininity, gender and power. Mackenzie's vocal breadth, especially in her range and movements from rough to smooth, prove her to be on a par with vocalists such as St. Vincent. Her guitar riffs and solos quirkily stagger over industrial and metronomic programmed beats, giving a sometimes-dizzying feeling of rhythmic push and pull. It's a very well-formed and considered album that will reward the listener with a wealth of detail on repeat listens.

Review: There's a story of real musical rediscovery behind Sketchy, the fifth album from Tune Yards. Having wound up finishing the last decade on I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life, the band apparently also realised that many of the things they found problematic in terms of the way UK music is frequently conceived, made, and marketed had managed to creep into their own practices and ideas. A rethink was on the cards.

Skip forward three years and the result is Sketchy, an album that celebrates the power and inventiveness only possible with live instrumentation, with word on the proverbial street suggesting at least some of the work here can be traced back to mammoth jam sessions. And it definitely shows. Of course the tracks are typically tight and executed with a razor sharp precision most electronic-pop-soul outfits can only dream of, but there's a distinctly more live feel here than recent outings, making for an emotionally danceable beast.

Review: Through her 'U.S. Girls' project, Toronto-based Meg Remy has released a consistently high quality run of albums that explore issues of femininity with a shaded and angular avant-pop sound. New record 'In A Poem Unlimited' sees Remy continue to explore identity politics, but in a comparatively warmer and more free sound as she collaborates with improvisational group The Cosmic Range. Structurally, the album enjoys an unpredictability of form that sprawls across skulking grunge, found sounds, crunching horn-sections and synth-driven industrial disco. Highlight track 'Incidental Boogie' exemplifies this binding of elements; the contrast of stomping, distorted with Remy's breathy and swaggering vocals is an intoxicating one. The breadth of Remy's palette makes this album an exhilarating listen, and - both as a vocalist and writer - Remy shines as an arresting and formidable talent.

Review: Meghan Remy is one of North America's musical secret weapons. Unless, of course, you already know about her, then she's just a bonafide gem in the crown jewels. Raised in Illinois, but based in Toronto for much of her career, her work as U.S. Girls is born of the post-millennium alt-pop sound, and by that we mean also cast in the shadows of the mainstream that defined much of her childhood. Bless This Mess presents that in all its glory. Some tracks can best be described as yacht pop (see: yacht rock, then work it out), homages to Immaculate Collection-era Madonna are audible, striking beautiful minimalistic balladry is present, and a voice sweeter than a sugar binge just before sitting down to watch, err, something sweet is omnipresent. It's stylised, stylish stuff, and it's difficult not to feel intoxicated by.

Review: Zomby remains such a singular and interesting figure within the music industry that the mooted legal kerfuffle surrounding "Natalia's Song" led James Holden to recently remark (via Twitter) with more than a degree of humour that it was perhaps the first instance of a European intellectual stealing from a Russian. This one sided ten inch comes ahead of the producer's keenly anticipated new album for the 4AD imprint, sampling and stuttering Russian Star Factory singer Irina Dubtzova and wrapping her voice around skeletal programming and heart melting melodies. Housed in deluxe packaging and first heard closing out Mary Anne Hobbes' tenure on Radio One, it's a little slice of niceness this.

Review: If the first single from this album, "Natalia's Song", left you worried that Zomby may have toned down his sound to fit the current zeitgeist in bass music, then don't. Dedication is a long way removed from Where Were U In '92?, but the influence of jungle and hardcore remains, albeit in a more spectral form, where skeletal beats play off against organic tones, his characteristic purple arpeggios drenched in reverb. The progression in his sound is just enough to add an element of introspection to his productions, while retaining the essence of what made his earlier material so irresistible; it's an album where air horns can co-exist happily with string sections and it doesn't seem jarring .With several tracks that are at times almost baroque in their execution, Dedication is an album that, whatever your preconceived notions of Zomby's sound, or bass music as a whole, must be heard.

Review: The original enfant terrible of the bass music world marks his second long player for 4AD with a sprawling opus of more than 30 skits and skirmishes daubed in his trademark colourful sonic scrawl. There is plenty here that reminds you of the early days of the producer's emergence when dubstep was a younger beast, from the spacious "Horrid" to the measured arpeggios of "Pray For Me", but you'll also find more intricate musings such as the dynamic and dramatic "Memories". Hype abounds on the creepy Funky of "VI-XI", while "Overdose" launches enthusiastically into a jungle tear out. At any given turn, you'll find yourself surprised, lurched from a serene mood into a manic one, only to be tempered again. There's a staggering range of ideas and styles to comprehend here, but would you want it any other way from one of electronic music's most outspoken upstarts?

The subtle melodic shuffle of "A Devil Lay Here" is an instant highlight, with glassy textures and bleeps held together in the most fragile, beautiful manner.
