18 Rays
18 Rays (12")
Cat: ATN 036. Rel: 24 Jul 17
Coldwave/Synth
  1. I Feel Rain (3:49)
  2. These Empty Stairs (4:25)
  3. Long Time Ago (3:47)
  4. North West Plaza (3:27)
Review: Nicolas Motte, Raphael Top Secret, and Antinote's head honcho Zaltan debut their 18 Rays project with this sublime little album and, although this might sound like we're heading into hyperboles, it is probably the best example of modern cold wave that we've heard over the last five years. "I Feel Rain" is a wonderful piece of music with a subtle hint of Joy Division's melancholic drone at the core of its vocals, while "The Empty Stairs" encapsulates everything that we love about downtempo. "Long Time Ago" meanders into open seas thanks to the outfit's solemn vocals and electric use of sparse and explorative guitars, which leaves the fluttering harmonics of "North West Plaza" to linger beautifully in their own ambient swing. Warmly recommended.

Distant Images

Deep House
  1. Keyboard Study (3:33)
  2. Days Of Steam (4:16)
  3. Leaving (4:22)
  4. Shaker Loops (3:46)
  5. Distant Images (4:21)
Review: Over the years, DK has been responsible for some of Antinote's most ear-pleasing moments. Even so, we can't think of many as breathtaking as "Keyboard Study", the Steve Reich-with-synthesizers track that kicks off Distant Images, his fourth vinyl excursion for Zaltan's lauded imprint. It superbly sets the tone for what follows: a stunning selection of synthesizer-heavy soundscapes variously inspired by American minimalism, Greek new age ambient and Vangelis's widescreen electronic soundtracks. It's the sort of record that sounds like it could have been made in the early '80s and reissued by Music From Memory, only better (and that's saying something).

Fourrure Sounds Vol 2
Cat: ATN 027. Rel: 09 May 16
Experimental/Electronic
  1. Sound (5:34)
  2. Dispositions (6:07)
  3. Border (4:32)
  4. Ossature (3:44)
  5. Tunnel (6:44)
  6. Vitre (5:27)
Review: Stephane Laporte's Fourrure Sounds, released to critical acclaim back in 2014, was something of a lo-fi triumph. Recorded entirely at night, with a variety of old analogue synths and a battered old tape recorder, it saw the Domotic producer pay tribute to experimental French electronic music of the 1970s. This follow-up is almost as good, with Laporte drifting between throbbing, percussive fare (see "Dispositions"), Black Zone Myth Chant style madness ("Ossature"), fine cosmic workouts ("Tunnel"), and blissful, new age-inspired ambient concoctions ("Timre"). It's arguably a little more expansive in scope than its' predecessor, but no less entertaining for it. In fact, it's another must-check record from Antinote.

Imaginary Choreography
Cat: ATN 018CD. Rel: 07 Sep 15

Balearic/Downtempo
  1. Migration
  2. Parallel Waves
  3. In A Dark Run
  4. Waterlight
  5. Mollusk Dance
  6. Emigration
Review: Even by contemporary crate digging standards, Imaginary Choreography is ridiculously obscure. It began life as a self-released cassette in 1984, and was created as an accompaniment to "study and exercise" at Italian dance schools. It was recently re-discovered in a Parisian flea market by one of the Antinote family, and here is presented on CD for the first time following a vinyl release earlier this summer. Heavily based around rolling, hypnotic electronic rhythms and synthesizer melodies, the album's six tracks variously touch on new age ambience ("Waterlight"), shuffling proto-Balearica ("Parallel Waves"), curious electronica ("Mollusk Dance"), and new age-influenced proto-techno ("In A Dark Run"). Amazingly, it still sounds remarkably fresh and futuristic, despite its' obscure roots and the cheapness of its' original production.

Automatic Illusion EP

Deep House
  1. Function Spring (8:31)
  2. Gravitation Of Acidtree (8:08)
Review: Given that Inoue Shirabe's last outing for Antinote was something of a luscious gem, you'd expect this follow-up to be similarly impressive. Happily, it is, with the Japanese producer once again showcasing his soft-centred blend of evocative melodious, dreamy electronics and shuffling rhythms. With its' whistling synthesizer melodies, Motor City flashes and sweaty, pitched-down drums, A-side "Function Spring" sounds like a sunrise anthem in the making. He flips the script slightly on the flip, offering an enticing mixture of Soichi Terada style drums, tumbling electronics, humid marimba lines and vintage ambient house pads. Intriguingly, "Gravitation of Acidtree" is also his most intergalactic track to date, suggesting a previously appreciation of classic Detroit techno.

Decades Vol 3

Techno
  1. E-Sadam (7:39)
  2. Marina Dub (6:02)
  3. Boutique Beast (5:48)
  4. Metal Tent (5:34)
  5. Tazza (5:33)
Review: The vinyl has barely cooled on the second installment of Tolouse Low Trax's Decades series, and the producer has already readied a third and final installment. As with previous volumes, it's a rich and varied affair, with the Salon Des Amateurs resident variously turning his hand to mildly foreboding electronica (the ghostly tribal vocals and hip-hop techno electronic beats of "E-Sadam"), lo-fi electronic dub ("Marina Dub"), krautrock inspired hypnotism ("Boutique Beast"), industrial influenced murkiness ("Metal Tent Wicked"), and Kraftwerk style, proto-techno throb (the standout "Tazza"). In other words, it's business as usual from one of electronic music's most talented producers.

  13. The Simplists - "Ambiance 9" (3:36)
  14. Alek Lee - "Plastic" (feat Or Edry & Yovav) (5:25)
Review: Zaltan's admirable Antinote label has been one of the most consistently surprising imprints of the last five years, boasting a catalogue that veers from blissful, synth-heavy Balearica and crusty modular noise, to hands-in-the-air rave madness and grouchy, experimental electronica. That on-point eclecticism is much in evidence on anniversary compilation Five Years Of Loving Notes, which boasts 14 previously unheard cuts from Antinote's growing roster of artists. Highlights are plentiful, from the slow burning Balearica of Dominique Dumont's "371", the deep space analogue weirdness of Stephane Laporte's "Timbuktu" and rush-inducing summer cheeriness of DK, to the dense tribal drums of Lueke, throbbing post-Italo drug-chug of Tolouse Low Trax and dubbed-out ambient haziness of The Simplists. In other words, it's a superb collection.
