Cliche (Soulwax instrumental mix) (5:56)
Ceci N'Est Pas Un Cliche (3:47)
Review: Belgian DJ duo 2ManyDJs make their music under the Soulwax alias. Whenever they do, it is arresting, seriously quality stuff. For this one the multi-genre mash up artists look to remix 'Cliche' by Charlotte Adigery and Bolis Pupul for the French label Because Music. Their first version is a typically textured, raw, ravey indie-techno workout with rugged beats and sleazy vocals lit up by bright strobes. After the instrumental comes 'Ceci N'Est Pas Un Cliche' which is a macho disco stomper with sliding hi hats and low-slung bass.

Make You Mine
Baby I'm Yours (La Funk Mob remix)
Review: 2010 looks like it's going to be a very big year for Parisian producer Thibault Berland aka Breakbot. As part of the Ed Banger family he's been producing a steady slew of quality remixes for Metronomy, Justice, Sebastian Tellier and Late Of The Pier, and now he's stepping up with excellent new material of his own.

In the vein of seriously smooth late 70's rockers like Hall and Oates and Michael McDonald, the title track has tons of charm courtesy of a vocal from Irframe. Add to that the modern production of Holy Ghost or Discovery-era Daft Punk and it's a pretty special disco-flavoured slice of sophisticated French pop.

Another man who's becoming hot property for 2010 is German producer Siriusmo, who turns in a remix that matches Breakbot's sense of retro fun and studio mastery. Far from Siriusmo's more Techno roots, this mix is almost a Psychedelic rock song, complete with cowbells and chiming 12-string guitars. It's weird and wonderful, and has more than a nod to Archie Bell and The Drells' seminal "Tighten Up".

Review: Breakbot's first full body of work as an official duo, Still Waters takes off where "Get Lost" left us last year... Silky, soft-focus and loaded with authentic disco charm and dynamics, it's clear Irfane's influence is either hugely respectful or he's been active in the act long before they made the announcement. Either way, who cares? The music is still like crushed velvet soul with occasional departures into touching soulful balladry ("In Return") and pure yacht-bound epicness ("Man Without Shadow") Stunning.

Review: By now, we're not sure how battered up this robot can get; French electro-balearic duo Breakbot are back with their first single of the year, hitting up regular collaborator Irfane for a four-track EP modeled around our own vices. Plodding downtempo and achy, breaky heart-strings are tugged as we take our daily dose of 'Remedy', while electric bossa nova and cinematic strings help us see 'The Light'. A subdued new EP spelling exciting things to come from the mainstays.

Review: There's no doubt that dance music's continuing love affair with disco has provided Cerrone with a new lease of life. Here, the legendary French producer delivers his first original album since 2008. Whereas that set looked to synth-pop and Euro-dance for inspiration, Red Lips is full of tracks that look to classic disco, boogie and jazz-funk for inspiration. There's naturally much to enjoy, from the Jackson Five style celebration of "Illuminate Me", and radio-friendly Aloe Blacc hook-up "C'Est Bon" (think Daft Punk and Pharrell), to the rubbery '80s grooves of "Kiss It Better (featuring Yasmin)" and thrillingly horn-heavy "Steal Your Love", which boasts superb vocals from Hot Chip chap Alexis Taylor.

Review: All hail the mighty Cerrone, one of the most important figures in the development of a European disco sound distinct from what was happening in the US. His run of LPs in the late 70s introduced a new, synth-driven sound which spawned some monumental hits, the biggest of which undoubtedly being 'Supernature'. Now the veteran disco machine is celebrating 50 years of active service in music by revisiting his former glories with new versions of much-loved favourites. Alongside these productions, Cerrone has also invited some more contemporary players to produce remixes, including Dimitri From Paris and The Reflex.

Review: 50 years have now passed since Marc Cerrone made his recording bow as part of Kongas, so to celebrate the percussionist-turned-disco pioneer has revisited some of the greatest tracks in his collection, not only recording new versions, but also handing over the parts to some similarly minded remixers. There's some modern production trickery and effects, as well as freshly recorded replacement vocals, but the key ingredients of his sound - the grandiose orchestral arrangements, driving kick-drums and sweaty percussion workouts - remain in-tact. The plentiful highlights include the glossy and uplifting 'Got To Have Lovin', the Reflex's wonderfully low-slung interpretation of 'Look For Love', Dimitri From Paris's fizzing take on 'Love in C Minor' and a sterling new version of Cerrone's most famous hit of all, 'Supernature'.

Review: Proudly pansexual pop artist Heloise Letissier has made some terrific music over the last decade, with each new album release being greeted by rave reviews. 'Redcar Les Adorables Etoiles', Letissier's third full-length, offers a subtle evolution of the Christine and the Queens sound. Whereas previous album 'Chris' (2018) blurred the boundaries between FM synth-heavy AOR synth-pop, R&B and the kaleidoscopic synth-funk of occasional guest collaborator Dam-Funk, 'Redcar Les Adorables Etoiles' explores the more atmospheric and stylized side of 1980s electronic pop, adding a few typically theatrical twists along the way. For proof, check out the grandiose chords, slow-motion chords and towering choruses of 'Le Chanson de Chevalier', the bubbly post Junior Boys aural melancholia of 'Rien Dire' and the throbbing, Euro-disco influenced mid-80s synth-pop of 'Je Te Vois Enfin'.

Review: One of the joys of Christine and the Queens' impossible-to-pigeonhole output has always been guessing what the gender-fluid artist will conjure up next. Even the Frenchman's most obsessive fans, though, will have predicted Paranoia, Angels, True Love, a triple-CD-length affair loosely based on Tony Kushner's legendary work Angels in America, a two-part experimental play about gay men in New York experiencing hallucinatory discussions with angels amidst the AIDS epidemic. It's not a wholly unsurprising turn, but still an unlikely project - and unlikely projects have always been the artist's bread and butter. Musically, it's a strong set that expands on the artist's now familiar blends of pop, r&b and electronica, and also contains some eye-catching collaborations and guest appearances - not least from the Queen of Pop herself, Madonna.

15 Minutes De Sonoto-Luddisme
Review: Originally released in 1980, Because Music presents the first reissue of Pascal Comelade's Paralelo LP. Originally released on his Parasite imprint, the album has now been expanded to a double LP including previously unreleased tracks. The French-Catalan electronic musician composed the LP on an EMS/AKS synth and is most representative of his output from between 1974 - 1981. His mechanical form of composition utilises arpeggio: repetitive music and the concept of sequences/continuous sound laced with evocative melodies. Also taking cues from the minimal facets of French prog/space rock band Heldon's electronic fortitude. Vocals come courtesy of English composer Gavin Bryars on a few of the tracks on the album. "15 Minutes de Sonoto-Luddisme" is one of the bonus tracks featuring a collaborative engagement with David Cunningham of the Flying Lizards and This Heat. Also features the original black and white sleeve, with its painting by Don Jacques Ciccolini.

He has been active since the 1970s, crafting ever evolving and ways moving rhythms from a mix of toy instruments, French chanson, folklore and underground sounds. The sometime painter has worked with the likes of PJ Harvey, Robert Wyatt and The Liminanas ever since goring up as a child of the frenzied rock sounds of there 60s. Here he fuses the Rickenbaker e.bass, Indian harmonium, keyboards and a tin can into something utterly unique and strangely compelling.

Daft Punk's Electroma (DVD + 44 page book)
Cat: 285066 Rel: 16 Nov 07
Notes: "Daft Punk's Electroma" is the eagerly anticipated directorial feature film debut from Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, better known together as Daft Punk. A psychedelic visual and musical odyssey, "Electroma" follows the journey of two robots on their quest to become human. Featuring a stunning soundtrack with music from Todd Rundgren, Brian Eno, Curtis Mayfair, Sebastien Tellier and Chopin, Electroma plays out beautifully "like music for the eyes". Daft Punk fans everywhere have been waiting to see what would happen if these legendary French electro-dance pioneers were let loose with a camera and this hypnotic road movie cum sci-fi tale doesn't disappoint. Rumour has it that if you play Daft Punk's last album "Human After All", alongside "Electroma", the two sync-up perfectly. With the imminent DVD release, fans won't have to wait much longer before testing the theory for themselves!

Quite whether they've just misspelt a comet name, or they just love dancing in hard, icy rain we don't know... But we love all versions on this release. The very much in-demand Daniel Avery gets all slo-mo acid on our jackseys while Jealov takes us into some very strange, warped electronica pastures with a Radioheadalicious rub. The band themselves get involved with their own cheeky, not to mention stomping, alternative "Bail Hop" while Bullion completes the package with his own beautiful take that will please all cosmic fans.

Review: There are times when you really just have to thank the musical gods for giving you an opportunity to escape from the mundanity of it all. That has been happening on average every three years since Django Django exploded onto a very different-looking music scene back in 2012.

None of us have looked back since, with the two records betwixt this and the self-titled debut serving to lure us deeper into this surreal, arty, muscular, danceable and altogether fun-but-proper musical world. Glowing In The Dark is certainly another trip to add to the adventure, and perhaps fittingly has its genesis in a warped painting rediscovered in drummer and producer Dave MacLean's parents' attic. Aurally, that translates into what might be their broadest and bravest yet - from video game scores to psychedelic pop, acoustic dreams through sweaty, reverb-heavy headline bombs.

Review: The treasures you are about to dance to were selected with passion by Uncle O and DJ Solo (The REANIMATORS) to celebrate the third anniversary of their Toxic Nights they have been hosting since 2002 in Paris. The nights specialized in mixing up genres and people. Bottle-fed on hip hop culture, but with an interest in any other singular universe, Uncle O and DJ Solo have filled their flight bags with a unique mixture of funk (white and black), electro, rap and even new wave rock, ready to mount an onslaught on those sleepy Parisian nights. True to this spirit of openness, Toxic, the album, today contains elements of every style, era and country. The outline of an Internationale of rhythm is taking shape, taking in everything from the Spanish new wave of the late 70s (Esplandor Geometrico) to iconoclastic hip hop (Mike Ladd) to the eccentric electro (Dabrye) of today, not to mention a good number of mutant rarities (ESG II, Royal Family and the Poor, Maurice Starr). A desire to mark a break and discover things new which has prevailed from the early days of the Toxic Nights has seen them launch the careers of many artists such as Justice and Revlen. This compilation is a flavour of the Toxic sound, but this is just 80 minutes of music here, imagine an endless six hours set of a crazy "hardcorepunkfunkelectrohiphopnuwavesoul" jam. This is TOXIC, but you ain't heard nothing yet ! Welcome freaks, mutants, robots...

Review: A key player in the Ed Banger movement, Mr Oizo collaborator and, arguably, the man who made Uffie really shine... Feadz needs no introduction. And this debut album has been on the cards for well over a decade. Naturally it's worth the wait: from the tongue-in-cheeky autotune R&B sleaze and the rifle-like electro-trap-funk of "Paper Cut" to the ghetto-minded booty-buster "Eastside" and silky-smooth disco-breaks beauty of "It's Enough", it's Feadz at his most extensive, accomplished and exciting. Future-looking while entrenched in electronic music's roots, Instant Alpha will cause instant appeal.

Review: Even without Charlotte Gainsbourg's musical heritage, the prospect of an album written and performed by Air, with lyrics by Jarvis Cocker (ex-Pulp) and Neil Hannon (The Divine Comedy) would be enough to entice most sensible music fans. But as a combination, 5:55 is far better than probably even the participants imagined it would be. The combination of Air's trademark glide complements Gainsbourg's voice (which is less singing and more melodic, breathy recitation), to the point where, had the lyrical input been less than stellar, this could easily have sent the listener to sleep. Instead, the emotional detachment in Gainsbourg's delivery acts as a foil to the passion presented in the lyrics. For their part, Cocker and Hannon excel with their trademark darkly humorous input- the passenger on a doomed flight in "AF407105", the surgery/seduction metaphor in "The Operation", or the venomous "Jamais" being particular standouts. Even though 5.55 bears all the hallmarks of its creators (if so inclined, one could see this as a new Air album, or imagine Cocker or Hannon singing the lyrics), it's even more than the sum of its parts and is almost certainly one of the best albums you'll hear in 2006 or beyond.

Metronomy is a young British producer who has done remixes for Roots Manuva, Franz Ferdinand, Lady Sovereign and Sebastien Tellier. The b-side is a bewitching and captivating "5:55" remix from "The Black Ghosts" (Simian's Simon Lord and The Wiseguys' Theo Keating).

Review: Charlotte Gainsbourg, daughter of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, worked tirelessly on 'Rest' for seven years before it was ready for release. The effect of this time spent in gestation is palpable, giving a sense of her meditative and contemplative process of songwriting. 'Rest' draws from a broad palette of sounds such as alt-rock and coldwave, with more upbeat moments of disco and pop. 'Rest' is an intensely personal album with emotional foundations in grief and family ties, and its deft structure and writing shows off Gainsbourg's ability to use light and shade - here as melancholy and hope - to powerful effect.

Review: When a Versatile artist is involved in something, somewhere, we hone in on it like a missile. Thankfully, Tigersushi boss Joakim has provided us with the usual dosage of gasoline for our listening engines and once again, the Frenchman has not disappointed us. Making his debut for his native Because Music, "On The Beach" sees the man in a slightly contemplative mood, delivering a pensive, vocoder-driven percussion workout - a true listening pleasure. CFCF inject a heftier dose of organic drumming to the equation, whilst Joakim's own Cray76 re-wiring opts for the all-out house flair, making this one a sure winner on the floor! But don't worry, Principles Of Geometry are there to rapidly re-form the track into a broken, totally wacked-out fusion of samples and eerie atmospherics. Dig in!

Review: You have to have balls to name your new single "DANCE", and in caps would you believe! But you can when you're called Justice and in all but three years have revolutionised dancefloors with tracks such as "We Are Your Friends" and "Waters Of Nazareth" as well as remixing Franz Ferdinand and Britney Spears with the same cheekiness. Imagine the audacity of fusing, in less than five minutes, the entire history of dance music: from the sexual liberation of seventies disco to the gimmicky black funk of Chic, from dark eighties house to the ecstatic electro which lit up nineties raves, not forgetting Daft Punk's French touch. The result would be "Dance".

Review: Voted the most air-guitar inciting track from their album Audio Video Disco, "New Lands" got the treatment from Falcon, A Trak and SebastiAn. While none of the takes require anywhere near as much air instrument frivolity, they all add a lot more dancefloor welly. Falcon goes for the rolling, filtered French funk approach, A Trak opts for an more abrasive, angular electro cut while Sebastian adds some much needed drama by opening with a long half step entry before breaking into the groove mid way. And there's a live version too! Very nice.

Review:  More than 18 months after their Audio, Video, Disco LP dropped, Justice's "Helix" finally gets a single release. It's a typical chunk of goodtime disco-stomp, like Daft Punk without the filter-heavy swing, or Cassius trying to rave in ill-fitting straightjackets. Remix-wise, Gesafellstein turns it into a crunchy electro banger - all heavy drum programming, cut-up yelps and murky riffs - while Parisian veteran Domenico Torti (once Dimitri From Paris's go-to "edit guy") cuts it up impressively, adding a dose of fuzzy funk to proceedings. For the heads, there are also two more downtempo bonus cuts, of which the effortlessly sweet "Ohio" is the pick.

Review: It's easy to forget that Justice were once one of dance music's most hyped acts, gracing magazine covers and gate-crashing the pop charts with a succession of crunchy, electro-house bombs. Times may have moved on, but the Parisian duo remain big news. Woman is their first studio album for five long years, and smartly moves between quirky, radio-friendly pop and thrusting club workouts. In the latter category you'll find the spiraling, low-slung, Italo-disco-with-balls of "Alakazam", the classic Ed Banger growl of "Chorus", and the vintage Daft Punk madness of "Heavy Metal". While these are impressive, it's actually the more downtempo songs - "Love S.O.S" and the dreamy "Close Call" included - that arguably stand out.

Review: If there was ever a duo with the bombast and flair to pull off the 18-minute electro-rock-opera, it's surely Justice. Gaspard Auge and Xavier de Rosnay created Planisphere in the wake of conquering the world with their debut album Cross, initially for use on the catwalk but subsequently shared on their MySpace. Of course such releases now attain a kind of cult mythos, and Planisphere is no exception. In the Ed Banger era of dirty French touch, this is a fans dream come true - the gnarly monster that keeps on giving, now pressed up on a single side of vinyl for continuous listening, with a classy etching on the reverse.

Next up for the label is Electronic pop duo from the Netherlands Klyne, who deliver the explosive bass driven R&B jam "Don't Stop" featuring super cool vocals reminiscent of Prince. The soulful electronic pop continues on the smooth and sexy deep house of "Water Flow" calling to mind the aesthetic of Crosstown Rebels or the HFN Music sound. The chilling and bittersweet closer "Lend Me Another Name" ends the EP in style with its neon lit synths, sultry guitar licks and precision beats.

Review: Mother is Logic1000's debut album. An alias of Samantha Poulter, the Berlin-based DJ and producer explains it has been insured by her becoming a parent. "I felt so much love and inspiration entering into motherhood that I just needed to create something really powerful," says the producer who hails from Sydney and has collaborated on the lad single 'Grown On Me' with her husband and long-time creative partner Thom McAlister. It is an album that runs that gamut from broken beats to smoky soul, shuffling basement grooves to heady and hypotonic, dubbed-out rollers.
