Review: Best Italy continues to do a wonderful job of unearthing much-sought after gems and giving them the re-press they deserve. Lily Ann was a quintessential one hit wonder of Italo disco perfection that surfaced in 1984, and "Going Crazy" captures the mood of early 80s dance music perfectly. Adding value to the release beyond the fresh mastering job and high-end modern pressing, as well as the previously released vocal and instrumental we also get treated to a dub mix of "Going Crazy" to give you even more options for dropping this impeccable slice of Italian dance music history.

Do It Again (12" limited to 250 copies reeditado)
Cat: BST X028. Rel: 23 Jul 18
Disco/Reediciones
  1. Do It Again
  2. Don't Stop
Review: REPRESS ALERT: This is just the sort of jam that Best Records Italy love. Asso originally released his slick cover of "Do It Again" by Steely Dan back in 1983, and it's a faithful version that simply injects a little disco magic into the impeccably composed bones of the track. It received plenty of play back in the day, and it's highly worthy of its own side of wax now. Meanwhile on the flip, "Don't Stop" is an even more essential a slab of club heat, tapping into the heady atmosphere of the Paradise Garage at the time that disco merged with boogie.

  4. Tittle Tattle (dub version) (5:10)
Review: The Best Records reissue campaign continues unabated as the Italian label turns to Bariocentro. While the band may have had most of their time in the spotlight in the late 70s, they bowed out with a veritable bomb in the shape of Tittle Tattle, a tightly-wound, punchy slice of uptempo 80s boogie like they just can't make any more. Feel the reverb on the handclaps, the slick guitar chops and Moog-tastic bassline and just try not getting down. This plush reissue comes packed with the radio edit, the full length version, the instrumental and everyone's favourite slice of 80s B side action, the dub mix.

Gimme Love (limited 12")
Cat: BSTX 014. Rel: 17 Jul 17
Disco/Reediciones
  1. Gimme Love (long version)
  2. Gimme Love (Italian version)
Review: This week Best Italy take their reissue romp of Roman rarities down to the infamous Rimini discotheque Cellophane. Crafted as a tribute to the 80s club, "Gimme Love" is an absolute gem of an Italo record, pitched at the more subtle end of the spectrum without ditching the hallmarks of the style. The bass arpeggio still thrums with purpose and the vocals revel in a bath of vocoder processing, but the camp histrionics are replaced here with a more measured delivery that should go down a storm in all kinds of different sets. As well as the original version on the A, the B-side features the Italian version of the track.

Review: Best Italy turn to cult 80s producer Yannick Chevalier, best known for his work in the field of library music and sound effects, but also responsible for a wonderful, supremely rare disco oddity from 1984 in the shape of "Ecoute Le Son Du Soleil." As well as the off-kilter funk of the original, you can hear the heavily processed vocal on its own for all kinds of creative mixing potential, as well as the instrumental and dub versions. The latter is particularly heavy, built for tripped out dancefloor excursions if you need something serious in your 12" arsenal.

Cat: BST X032. Rel: 16 Apr 18

  1. Din Don (vocal) (5:40)
  2. Din Don (instrumental) (5:36)
Review: Silvana Noris was tragically overlooked back in her mid 80s heyday, laying down just three singles before drifting onto pastures new. Best Italy have dug out her shimmering Din-Don single and given it the new lease of life it so richly deserves, helped a little by DJ Harvey testing the cut out on his turntable travels. Noris' vocal is a curious wonder to behold, hitting a low register and imparting a gravelly tone that sits atop the punchy boogie production. Another slice of disco manna makes its way back into the limelight thanks to Best.

Cat: BSTX 030. Rel: 23 Jul 18
Disco/Reediciones
  1. KKK. (club mix)
  2. KKK. (dub mix & bonus beats)
Review: Giorgio Gordano and Giorgio Dolce originally produced "KKK" back in 1983, and the track was taken into the hearts of the blossoming Balearic scene hovering around DJ Alfredo at Amnesia. It's as gentle and sweet natured as Italo disco can be, and of course it makes perfect sense that Best Records would dig it out of the archives and give it the shiny new reissue it deserves. The "Club Mix" of "KKK" is a feast of simple, charming programmed melodies and crisp drum machine rhythms with the innocence of the early 80s in its heart. The "Dub Mix" and "Bonus Beats" on the flip are handy for the technical DJs out there, but the "Club Mix" is where it's at for the lovers.

Review: Claudio Casalini's Best Record label does a fine job of reissuing funk, disco and other curios from the mists of time, and so it goes with this wonderful slice of loose and live soul jazz. Grupo Almendra hailed from Venezuela, and they released their sole album Almendra in 1978 in a whirlwind of Latin American musicality and it had been consigned to relative obscurity. Whichever digger was lucky enough to discover this gem must have been very pleased indeed, for the quality of the music and the production is nothing short of remarkable, while the remastering has respectfully revived the sweet, soulful sound of Grupo Almendra.

  1. Take Time (vocal) (4:40)
  2. Take Time (extended) (6:14)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Once more scouring the annals of disco history for the hottest jams, Best look beyond Italy and snap up this much-vaunted slice of American funk from 1982. While second hand prices can get out of control, it's not hard to hear why this glittering prize from Jagg would be so coveted - it's got everything. Jazz-leaning slap bass, mean synthesizer chops and soaring vocals - "Take Time" is prime to set the party off, and no longer is it the preserve of wealthy collectors. Originally a single-sided affair, Best have done the right thing and filled the B-side up with an extended version to let that groove roll on even longer.

Disco/Reediciones
  1. Got To Have Your Lovin (vocal) (6:09)
  2. Got To Have Your Lovin (instrumental) (4:57)
Review: Steve Kahn & Co. are yet another of those curios of the early 80s that Best Italy have dug out, dusted down, spruced up and repressed for your eclectic party pleasure. "Got To Have Your Loving" is a pure feel good jam at every turn - it's got a very natural, live band sound mixed by the legendary Tee Scott that especially makes the aqueous bass playing shine through. Whether you plump for the vocal or the instrumental, this is the kind of record that could set a wedding party on fire as much as a serious heads-down disco funk session. You'll no doubt get a lot of mileage out of this one, and have a great time in the process.

Review: "The ""MBO Theme"" represents one of the first hits on the early days of chicago house movement. Now came back with the plus of the unreleased ""Italian Version"" (on the side B instead of the unnecessary radio cut).
This project is being managed by Mario Boncaldo the same man behind some other great italo-disco projects like ""Tullio De Piscopo - Stop Bajon"" and ""Plastic Mode - Baja Imperial"" today is enriched with this unreleased edit produced by Mario himself back in the days and availabel only on the quarter inch studio tape... this cut is more heavy and club oriented because there are no vocals so there is more space for synth and bassline parts, a must play for every set! New rediscovered by Early Sounds Recordings in conjunction with Best Record Italy. Pellegrino from the Early Sounds Collective did a good job with additional remix and overdubs for the new "Na Na Na Edit" plus the remastered original disco version available on the flip.

  1. Stop Your Lies (vocal) (6:13)

Review: Best Records' own luminary Claudio Casalini was at the helm for this one-shot studio project that captures Italo disco at its most exuberant and organic. Originally released in 1984, the bassline on "Stop Your Lies" is a quintessential slice of synthetic throb from a golden era, but the electronic elements are wonderfully offset by rich instrumentation and a brilliantly camp vocal performance from the unnamed boy-girl combo. The vocal mix on the A side is strong enough for a single-sided cut, but the instrumental on the flip widens out the reach of the record and really lets Casalini's superb production shine through.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: With the Grupo Almendra album fresh out of the gates, Italian label Best Records jump right back in with a crucial slice of disco funk from noted arranger, producer and karate expert Pino Presti. "You Know The Way" is a slinky party starter with on-point slap bass, lively brass and sumptuous Philly strings of the highest order. 1. To Africa/Soul Makossa (4:47)
  2. Ain't No Sunshine (2:18)
  3. I Call Your Name/Come Back To Me (2:07)
Review: The latest dig from Best Record Italy's eternal mission to release the finest Roman musical manna features noted jazz man Pino Presti taking on Manu Dibango's eternal party jam "Soul Makossa". Presti's interpretation uses oodles of gleaming 80s synths in place of the original traditional instrumentation, but fear not as the iconic brass section remains a real-world force, and sounds mighty fresh with it. Following up that cover is a sumptuous version of "Ain't No Sunshine" which is aimed square at the heartstrings of the most Balearic cruisers. "I Call Your Name / Come Back To Me" gets even smoother, the vocals capturing Mediterranean getaway romance to perfection.

Review: Best Records previously mined Pino Presti's illustrious back catalogue for the To Africa / Soul Makossa, You Know The Way and Funky Bump 12"s, and they're back with the Italian arranger's finest disco delicacies straight outta 1977. "You Know Why" is a swooning, romantic groover featuring the sultry vocals of Roxy Robinson. "Nice & Easy / Hungry For Love" is a bold, dramatic cut with striking brass stabs and a slinky bassline that wraps itself around Robinson's classic vocal. "Come On" is a deeper, Philly string laden affair of the heart, rounding out this most passionate of disco 12"s.

  1. Le Chat
  2. Le Chat (short dub)
  3. Le Chat (instrumental)
Review: Like all the best releases on Best, Pussycat were something of a one hit wonder who appeared and then promptly disappeared after one single in 1983. It's a wicked shame, seeing as their track "Le Chat" was a wonderful fusion of disco funk and synth pop. The vocal is catchy enough, but the "Short Dub" version is where the real heat is to be found - this isn't over the top delay wielding but rather a subtle approach that brings the strongest elements to the foreground. The "instrumental" takes you on a smoother ride, but those who want a bit more spice in their selection will be clamouring for that dub.

Cat: BST X031. Rel: 16 Apr 18
Disco/Reediciones
  1. Party Freaks (4:35)
  2. Dance Together (4:05)
Review: Alan Shelly was an intermittent feature in the late 60s and early 70s soul and funk scene, but his one-off 7" Party Freaks / Dance Together released in Italy in 1975 remains a treasured gem for those who crave the most potent secret weapons for their record crates. Of course, Best Italy are no slouches when it comes to such records and they have dutifully snapped up the original masters of these sought after jams and given the full, uncut mixes a proper, beautifully remastered airing on 12". "Party Freaks" has a raucous, West African flavour to it that can't fail to set the crowd alight, while "Dance Together" takes things in a looser, jammed out direction - both tracks are pure fire, and it's a damn good thing Best have dusted them down.

  1. I'm Hungry (6:14)
  2. I'm Hungry (Caramba mix) (8:32)
Review: Best are really reaching for the serious stuff here - Stopp was one of those mythical one hit wonders of the Italo disco era that somehow caught a wave on distant shores. It's not hard to see why "I'm Hungry" was huge with the early Chicago house wave and DJs like Ron Hardy. It's a surefire banger, all daggering arpeggio basslines and romantic, mystical lead lines with a catchy vocal chant line to really set the party off. The "Caramba Mix" is no slouch either, edging in a little more club-ready dynamics for those who need a more beat-oriented ingredient for their proto-house cocktail.

Review: When The One "O" Ones originally released Radio Cosmo Disco back in 1977 it was confined to 7", which is no place for such majestic cosmic groove exploration. Now Best Records are continuing their quest to repress every hidden gem of Italian dance music and beyond, and they're doing "Radio Cosmo 101" the right way. The full "Disco Version" of the track gets to stretch out on a full 12" side, and does so in a dreamy haze of feel good funk. 1. Vibrations (Disco version)
  2. Baobab (Disco version)
Review: Having reissued Body, Body Love last year, Best Records come back for more of Billy Woost's late 70s grooves, all lifted from his sole self-titled album and presented here in their true 'Disco Version' format. This time around it's "Vibrations" that takes centre stage, and it sounds resplendent in its widescreen vision of disco funk production at its highest possible standard. On the flip "Baobab" sounds even more potent with its killer bassline groove, dream-pop vocal trills and all round feel-good mood. Now if Best can just do the same job with the rest of the album we'll be laughing.

  3. Sleep
Review: Billy Woost may not have released much music back in his heyday around 1977, but the one album he did put together was enough to secure a place in the crosshairs of the consummate Italian groove archivists, Best Italy. Picking up the finest jams from Woost's back catalogue, we're presented with a three tracker dripping with classic disco charm. "Body, Body Love" comes in a previously unreleased disco form that cruises at an easy pace but packs plenty of punch, while "Please Touch Me" edges the intensity up with a steamy set of strings, brass and vocals. "Sleep" meanwhile taps into a Blockheads kind of funk, bright and bouncy and just a little left of centre, which of course makes it all the more special.
