Deyo (12")
Cat: ACRE 071. Rel: 30 Oct 17
Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Deyo (7:15)
  2. Kasoa (6:18)
Review: Founder and leader of the Banana Hill parties out of Sheffield, Cervo has started churning out some seriously bad-mannered house music as of late. Interestingly, his devious blends of 4/4 dance recall the same sort of experimentation and freedom as Toddla T's tracks, the main star to have come out of Steel City. The man debuts on London's Black Acre with these two spicy rave bangers, kicking off with the smooth and liquid-like "Deyo", before turning everything into a bumpy stomp on the more acid-laden "Kasoa". The main thing about these two tunes is the funk running deep in its veins - boom!

Partials (12")
Cat: ACRE 056. Rel: 13 Jul 15
Bass
  1. Partials (6:08)
  2. Mach (5:19)
Review: Lurka realigns with the Black Acre label for another journey into "sonic bat country" on the heavy hitting Partials 12". Responsible for one of favourite Hotline releases, Lurka has previously been spotted lending some subby heft to the likes of Box Clever and Black Box but seems to have struck a real partnership with Black Acre. Leading with "Partials", Lurka's production intricacies are on full display here with twisting, snake-like melodies and crunched up and broken metallic rhythms deployed with extra time delay that is likely to confuse the dance nicely. Complementing this, "Mach" comes off as a more rugged number, though the awkward drums are still very much a prominent element.

Brooklyn (12")
Cat: ACRE 065. Rel: 14 Nov 16
Deep House
  1. Brooklyn (8:09)
  2. The Carpenters (6:51)
Review: It feels like The Maghreban has been around for years but, in fact, the London-based house deviant released his first solo EP in 2014. Two successful years have established his name on the contemporary dance roster and, of course, releases for the likes of Versatile Records have certainly helped his name to propagate. He lands on the English capital's Black Acre imprint this week, armed with two unsurprisingly loose and hawk-eyed house experiments; the first, "Brooklyn" is an all-out synth frenzy, the sort of outsider house sketch with The Maghreban's familiar Eastern twang running all through it, while "The Carpenters" is a different sort of beast, a percussion-heavy, dub-fuelled tribal showdown with jazzy influences, and a mythical sort of tone to its harmonics. Recommended!

  9. Ritual (4:44)
  10. Abbots Bromley Horn Dance (4:02)
Review: Memotone is really coming through with some golden material as of late, and all his gear on Black Acre is essential to say the least. Never truly sticking to one sound or genre, the artist explores all the possibilities of electronic sound, incorporating elements of noise, ambient, techno and much more. This LP, Chime Hours, is potentially his most daring work to date, and although it sounds like an exaggeration, we dig all of these ten tunes. There's rugged outsider house in the form of "Your Eyes My Teeth", loose broken beats via "All Collapsed", and some form of pseudo glitch techno through "She's A Killer". But seriously, have a listen to all of this beauty.

Malumz (12")
Cat: ACRE 067. Rel: 17 Apr 17
Experimental/Electronic
  1. Bayefal (4:39)
  2. Malumz (Tribute To Gqom Oh!) (5:20)
  3. Malumz (Citizen Boy remix) (5:35)
  4. Malumz (Formation Boyz remix) (5:33)
Review: DJ/producer Nan Kole (aka Francesco Cucchi) is a natural-born musical activist. A long-time advocate of contemporary African music and trans-national cultural exchange. He brings more takes on the gqom sound here with the Malumz EP for Bristol's Black Acre. There's some booming, tunneling and thunderous rhythm action happening on the epic "Bayefal" while some deep acid antics on "Malumz" (Tribute To Gqom Oh!) keep up with a relentless boom: Plastikman goes to Afrika on this one! On the flip, the said track gets two awesome remixes: Citizen Boys rendition is very nefarious indeed with its razor sharp strings in minor acting as bassline over its jacking vocal loops. Then Formation Boyz step up with some impressive off kilter rhythm therapy.

  1. Alone (4:56)
  2. Decline (2:42)
  3. Seeing (5:45)
  4. First Light (5:58)
Review: With roots and stripes in the classic world, the ambient world (as Kollaps) and the bass world, Prayer fuses elements his peers would never dare. Here we find him making his Black Acre debut with four mesmerising cuts that span the musical cosmos; the overlapping, strangely metered cascades of "Alone", the cathedral stepper "Decline", the surging jungle hurricane "Seeing" closing with the breath-taking orchestral string sweeps of "First Light". Someone pass this man a film to score.
