Review: Alex Barnett and Faith Coloccia return to the dark, militant and disorderly outlet that is Blackest Ever Black for a second LP of twisted ambient-filtered noise infusions. Much like their previous album, Weld is inherently abstract but still manages to tell a story, taking the listener on a journey by using primitive forms of sound design. There are certainly more concrete pieces within, such as the kick-powered "Dreamsnake" or the hazy stoner jam that is "AM Horizon", but the release is largely freeform and loosely held together by fuzzy shreds of electronic fuzz. "Ash Grove" is a favourite of ours, its circling toms giving the track a sporadic backbone. It's a beaut, as per usual.

Review: The belated release of New York industrial ambient crew Black Rain's early '90s soundtrack work in 2011 sparked something in founder Stuart Argabright. It inspired a belated return to the studio and this surprise album, Black Rain's first for 18 years. Given how long they've been away, Dark Pool is a pleasingly accomplished set. Like their previous material, it wades in dark waters, joining the dots between droning electronic textures, skittish, IDM-inspired rhythms, horror chic, industrial noise and bleak electronica. It's hugely atmospheric, of course, but also strangely claustrophobic. It's a brilliant set, all told, but one that shouldn't be taken lightly.

Review: Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Carla Dal Forno was once a member of a number of legendary Australian outfits. These days, the Melbournian resides in Berlin, which is presumably where she met Blackest Ever Black boss Kiran Sande. He loved her clandestine, atmospheric take on pop - think minimal wave, cold-wave and early Joy Division mixed with contemporary ambience, and leftfield synth-pop - and has decided to put out this debut album. Comprised of four songs and four instrumentals, You Know What It's Like has a timeless feel; the folksy, Scott Walker-influenced "Dry In The Rain", for example, sounds like it could have been recorded at any point over the last 40 years, while "Dragon Breath" has a genuine Radiophonic Workshop feel.

Review: Melbourne trio F Ingers are formed of Tarcar pair Carla Dal Forno and Tarquin Manek along with Samuel Karmel and their Blackest Ever Black debut is some seriously drugged out, lo-fi electronics sounding like early Chris & Cosey crossed with Syd Barrett style psychedelia. Such examples of this are on tracks "Escape Into Bushes" and "Under The House Hard To Breathe". Likewise, tracks like "Blissful Cubby House" and "Useless Treasure" sound like CTI.. if they were joined by a guitarist! The perfect soundtrack for rainy Sunday afternoons after a big night out.

Review: The Berlin based label Blackest Ever Black continues their singular journey through the darkest recesses of sonics old and new with an album from Lustmord. Otherwise known as Welsh born but California-based dark ambient pioneer Brian Williams, Lustmord's discography spans some three decades and has collaborated with Chris & Cosey, The Melvins and Tool as well as releasing numerous solo albums. The Word As Power is the first Lustmord LP in some four yerars and fits in neatly with bleakly beautiful aesthetic Kiran Sande's label has been cultivating over the past few years, using a combination of "voices, electronics, immense sub-bass, field recordings and other acoustic phenomena harnessed and arranged to stimulate feelings of dread and desolation, certainly, but also escape, renewal and rebirth".

Review: Aside from all the projects that he's been involved in the past - Bum Creek and Tarcar being among some of our favourites - Tarquin Manek has only released one tune on his own name, a track entitled "Not Missing You" that came out earlier this year on the mighty Blackest Ever Black. Manek is finally back on BEB with his own mini LP this time, and it's a splendid mixture of eerie electronics and Eastern influences. For instance, the opener "Sassafras Gessundheit" is a wonky twist of pseudo didgeridoos and unstable electronic patterns, and "Fortunes Past" is so molecular in its aesthetic that it sounds like organisms floating at the bottom of the ocean. "Perfect Scorn" is another favourite of ours, but what we most like about Manek's music is the little details dotted everywhere. Like intricate sculptures, his music is a journey into subtlety and elegance. Beautiful.

Review: British duo Raime are back with the first album since 2012's brilliant Quarter Turns A Living Line and their signature style of dark ambience and haunting imaginary soundtracks which incorporate jungle, dub and post-punk influences into the mix also. The album is said to be largely influenced by their side project Moin which incorporates rock and metal influences too. According to Blackest Ever Black "the DNA of dub-techno, garage/grime and post-hardcore rock music spliced into sleek and predatory new forms." Highlights include the moody subtractive rock of "Dialling In, Falling Out", the dub and post punk crossover of "Dead Heat" and the brooding mood-lighting of "Cold Cain".

  1. The Master Side (version 1) (7:49)
  2. The Master Side (version 2) (6:25)
Review: Regis' most recent number, The Master Side, came through below radar back in October, but left our shelves almost instantly. This is not a surprise given both its quality, and the fact that the UK techno legend only releases once every blue moon. In fact, we haven't had a Regis 12" on Blackest Ever Black for several years now, and this was arguably the perfect comeback from the dark Lord of the British underground; moreover, you'd be forgiven for mistaking this with a Downwards EP thanks to its grey-scaled colouring. Both sides to The Master Side are viciously effective 4/4 juggernauts that express the sleeker, more sombre side of techno, except that Regis has his own way of permeating the funk within his stone-cold beats and bass sounds. The Master is back, across two sides of utter heat. Warmly recommended!

Review: The BEB boys have had this LP from Regis in the works for a while now, getting every coldwave freak from here to Timbuktu raving with excitement. Although this LP isn't made up wholly of new tracks, it is a fine compilation of the man's most important material post his purist techno days of the late 90's and early 2000's. Within, you'll find all of his most diverse and thought-provoking works, from the infamous remix of Raime's "This Foundry" to the gorgeous techno excursion that is the remix of "Loss" by Dalhous, a collection of works that span ambient, goth, techno and EBM. However, there a three new tunes: there's the excellent Nitzer Ebb-style remix of "Manbait" by Family Sex, the electrifying "CU1" by CUB, and the wavy, far-out trip that is "Plant Lillies At My Head" by Tropic Of Cancer. Yes, this is a bit special, so do the right thing.
