Review: Drew Lustman's man crush on the many musical projects Luke Vibert doesn't look like dissipating anytime soon with the arrival of an Amen Andrews 12" on the Blueberry Records label. These four jungle burners follow Vibert's previous dalliance with Blueberry as Luke Warm and will satisfy anyone that has been hankering for some classic Amen action by Vibert. It is after all a decade since we last got some Amen fckn Andrews cuts! Apparently cut using the rare technique of "firing off a Tek 9 automatic" in the mastering studio, all four tracks here are vintage jungle shot through the sort of tongue in cheek humour one expects from Vibert. But don't confuse this for novelty, News Of The World will definitely nice up any serious Jungle session.

  1. Umi Says
  2. Attack (Sven Liebeck refix)
Review: Launched earlier this year with a compelling full length collection from the unheralded Brrd, Drew Lustman's Blueberry label apparently has material from Dego, Luke Vibert and Todd Osborn in the offing. Before all that, a limited one off pressing containing a secret weapon from many a FaltyDL set has arrived. Played by Mary Ann Hobbs over a year ago, the FaltyDL edit of "Umi Says" casts the Mos Def classic in a floor ready manner, adding a sense of roughness to the smooth, jazz indebted original. On the flip is a FaltyDL tweak of "Attack" a composition by Sven Libaek from Inner Space (The Lost Film Music Of Sven Libaek) the compilation issued on Trunk back in 2006.

Review: Having been responsible for countless killer releases on Swamp81, Planet Mu and Ninja Tune as a producer, Drew 'FaltyDL' Lustman is trying his hand at curating other peoples music with the launch of Blueberry Records. Apparently taking its name from the blueberry hill Granma Lustman owned, it's nice to see Lustman use the label as a platform for a newcomer to shine. Little information is available on newcomer Brrd, but his Towers/Anointing EP presents the producer as a similar soul to his label boss with the 13 vignettes operating at the fertile intersection of house, hip hop and jazz that will appeal to FaltyDL fans, with "The Anointing" especially offering a woozy production that seems to sway with a drunken nonchalance. Future Blueberry releases from Luke Vibert, Todd Osborn and Dego are all planned so keep an eye on this label!

Review: Elysia Crampton came through for the first time this year with a pair of EP's, one for the impressive Boomkat Editions and another for the fledgling Total Stasis. Her latest piece of work appears on bass wizard Falty DL's label, the ambiguously named Blueberry Records. Much like her previous outings, "American Drift" is a mixture of many moods and styles, a blend of slow, meditative vocals and starry electronic atmospherics. "Axacan", on the other hand, is backed by a mi-tempo percussive swagger and boasts the same level of melodic psychedelia, while "Petrichrist" heads down tribal roads with its organic drums and odd waves of flutes, and "Wing" takes things down to r&b levels....far-out r&b levels that is! Recommended.

Review: Having appeared in one form or another on labels as varied as Eglo, Neroli, Wildheart Recordings and Berceuse Heroique recently, Dennis 'Dego' McFarlane adds Drew Lustman's Blueberry Records to his evergreen CV with the excellent Nuts! EP. Such a signing by the producer known as Falty DL should not be a surprise to anyone that considers themselves a real fan of Lustman's work with Dego regularly touted as a strong influence on the New Yorker's musical output. Rich in musical flavour and heavy in rhythmic impact, all three cuts from Dego here really slam home how accomplished he is as a producer with the wonderfully bugged out "Fancy A Burger" and the rugged, dusted down swing of "Celestial Ditton" vying for first place in our affections. The latter track gets a rather nice rework from Falty DL too!

Cat: BBRX 002. Rel: 29 Oct 15
Deep House
  1. River Girl (4:56)
  2. Do You Box? (6:32)
Review: New York's FaltyDL has remained busy throughout the year, issuing a LP filled with bruk jungle on Planet Mu, collaborating with Fotomachine, dropping the odd Ninja Tune 12" and facilitating a most interesting album from Elysia Crampton through his Blueberry label. Speaking of which, the man himself lines this latest Blueberry 12" with a pair of signature heavy licks. The A side, "River Girl", is simply a great piece of house music with subtle tribal influences and sultry vocal samples, all wrapped up in a hybrid coating consisting of hip-hop, juke and even a little synth-pop, perhaps. On the flip, "Do You Box?" goes much deeper down the rabbit hole, offering an odd, broken beat that is just slightly too fast for hip-hop, and a tad slow for house. Whatever you would want to call it, it's clear that FaltyDL has the ability to marry just about any genre together.

Review: NYC's FaltyDL has been constantly active over the last few years, with the majority of his music landing via his very own Blueberry imprint. He's prone to releasing EPs on the fly, so a new album by our beloved 'bass' producer is truly exciting. This is especially true as of late, because the artist has gradually moved away from the fidgety two-step-garage hybrids that he has been heavily associated with, and much more towards a leftfield/r&b kind of space. There are beat-driven, percussion-heavy grooves such as "River Phoenix" or "Frigid Air", but the majority of this album is drenched in a placid, soulful vibe that uses different styles of beats and arrangements to get its direction across. "Drugs" featuring Rosie Lowe, for example, will appeal to the soul enthusiasts as much as the dancers, while tunes like "Fleshy Compromise" might even get the coldwave jockeys to turn heir heads. The point is, FaltyDL is in a state of constant flux, and this album is proof of the man's many talents. YES.

Review: Hot remix action of Falty DL's recent Heaven Is For Quitters EP - the good (or even better!) news is that this is volume 1, so we can expect more of this gold in the near future. Much like his own tunes, The Cyclist and O'Flynn turn in two dusty, percussion-heavy dance experiments that blur the lines between bass and house, coming through with some lovely, late summer rays of warmth. On the flip, Lobster-boy Palms Trax rewires "Neeloon" into a sparse house banger with plenty of aqueous exploration in its underbelly, and Kaidi Tatham transforms "Drugs" into an magnificently off-kilter nu-jazz piece.

Review: A brand new venture from FaltyDL and Fotomachine, this starts a new series of animated 12"s that pay homage to 4Hero's influential Tom & Jerry imprint. With a mission statement that states they want to put a little sex back into techno, both cuts back up this vision with warm, visceral physicality. "Flesch" is all subby, slinky and twisted while "Neo Geo" is a sprightly, technicolour analysis of classic electro. Both are designed for the sweetest, sweatiest chapters of the night when pretentions aren't just left at the door... They're sent back home in a taxi and told to lock themselves in the shed.

Review: FaltyDL's Blueberry Records follows up excellent releases from Brrd with the Michigan Dream EP from one of Detroit's most underrated figures in the shape of Todd Osborn. Although best known for his work on Ghostly as Osborne, this EP under his own name covers similarly wide-ranging ground, with the peak time boogie house of of "5thep" sitting alongside the punishing acid techno of "What Is Love" on the A-side, and the hip hop vibes of the title track complemented by the almost footwork rhythms and shimmering melodies of 752am on the flip. Another essential release from Blueberry.

Review: Is FaltyDL's Blueberry Records imprint getting tastier by the release or is it just us? Here we find mysterious chefs Secret State following up releases on Varvet and CPU with four outstanding 21st century electro jams. "Blast" lives up to its name with a pumping, cosmic 150 BPM salvo before the breaks start entering the mix on "Just Because" where layers of spiralling arpeggios weave tightly together. "Scales" brings a little b-boy blend to the mix while "Dystopian Preset" washes us away down the electro plughole and leaves us swimming in fractured rivers of slimy bass. You could imagine Stingray dropping something like this. Don't keep these a secret.

  4. Flesh Tone (3:29)
Review: Remarkably, veteran producers Neil Landstrumm and Tobias Schmidt first worked together as Sugar Experiment Station way back in 1996. Here they present their first joint release of 2019: a fine EP on Falty DL's Blueberry Records imprint that's packed to the rafters with weighty and otherworldly club cuts. Perhaps the most instantly arresting track of the quartet is opener "Sounds Like", a chunky, garage-influenced house cut rich in attractive female vocal samples and booming bass. That said, many may prefer the sleazy, bleep-laden, Legowelt style techno intensity of "Europa", the drowsy post-electro alien funk of "Hijacker" or the wonderfully weighty electro insanity of closing cut "Flesh Tone". In other words, it's a killer EP that rocks from start to finish.

Review: FaltyDL's Blueberry label covers a whole spectrum of electronic dance music, and with each new release comes a surprise in one way or another; whether it be glitchy post-drum & bass, or silky deep house, and forward-thinking bass cocktails, quality is never an issue that we're concerned with. This time we have newcomer Tenant liven up the place with six bursts of bass experimentation, and from the utterly bonkers jungle patterns of "Remote Lover", to the minimal electronica of "Unison Yellow", or noisy drum thrashing of "Lunar Gymnast", you will certainly not be bored by the both the originality and diversity of these daring pieces of dance futurism. Sickness throughout.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
  1. Daydreamin'

Review: Falty DL's Brooklyn-based label Blueberry steps up with a new offering from hitherto unknown producer Luke Warm, whose style of production and name suggests it may be the work of another highly decorated producer called Luke. "Daydreamin'" snakes through Vibert-style sampling fun and games while keeping a suitably whimsical tone to the track through its choice of chords and harmonies. "Brockley Spears" is a more extrovert breakbeat funk roller, working plenty of old-skool hip hop cuts into the mix and making for a tidy party worker. "Instant Vibe" takes some definite influence from Wagon Christ style synth lines, while the funky groove is certainly not far that peppy brand of Ninja Tune beats. "Party Piece" rounds the EP off with some rude bass dominating the mix of loose and limber drum licks.
