Review: Geneva might not even be in the first 10 cities you name when it comes to dub talent, but the Bongo Joe label has been quietly trying to change that over the course of more than 40 releases. The latest comes from new local band Amami and fuse dub with afrobeat and dancehall to make for something refreshingly original. Raphael Anker (Imperial Tiger Orchestra), Gabriel Ghebrezghi (Ghostape, Tapes Adventure, Uberreel) and Ines Mouzoune make up the outfit and they explore dusty trap style dub on the opener, hyperdriven afro dub on "Fast" and a more stripped back rhythm on "Giant". "Ivory" is a funky number with a summery vibe while closing cut "Super Shaggy" stomps hard.

Review: According to the dusty-fingered diggers behind Bongo Joe Disques, General Franco Lee Ezute is the "aficionado's choice" when it comes to the "Anioma sound", a variant on the Igbo highlife style that was popular in Nigeria during the 1970s and '80s. If you are unsure what the style sounds like, we'd recommend checking this reissue of "Onye Kata Obia", an obscure, four-track release from the musician and his backing band, Harmony International, that was most likely recorded around the turn of the '80s. Full of glistening guitars, heartfelt vocals and insatiable, dancefloor-friendly rhythms, it's one of the most joyous and sun-soaked records you're ever likely to hear.

Review: Le Disques Bongo Joe's latest EP is a joint release with Calico Discos. It offers up four fresh cuts from L'Eclair, a self-styled "exogroove post-internet" six-piece with three must-check albums to their name. Musically, the four tracks offer a breezy, summery and mixed-up blend of Tony Allen style polyrhythms, tropical funk guitars, languid synthesizer sounds, psychedelic electronics and copious amounts of mind-altering dub effects. Our favourites include the low-slung deep Afro-psychedelia of "Dallas", the rousing, horn-heavy EP opener "Cebando" (a future dancefloor staple for sure), and the Moog-laden sunrise dreaminess of "Atlantis".

Review: Switzerland's Bongo Joe imprint is all too often overlooked and underrated. Unlike other labels who are all about the branding and PR, these guys are in the game simply for the sounds and, more than anything, to bring you something that you may not have heard before. Much like that excellent comp covering the sounds of The Bahamas, back in the 50s, this new collection of tunes uncovers a scene that perhaps few have heard in this country, the post-punk wave that engulfed Spain at the beginning of the 1980s. To be precise, La Contra Ola covers the years 1980-1986, and the most striking thing about this LP is the diversity of sounds that these artists were using. Unlike the stale synth wave that swept across the UK in that Neo-romantic sway, the likes of Esplendor Geometrico, Derribos Arias, Linea Vienesa, or Tres, to whom this comp is dedicated to, used their own native influences to express their vision of electronic punk music, and the results can be heard all over this magnificent anthology. It's a piece of history that we finally have more knowledge of, and we thank the ever-reliable Bongo Joe for it!

Review: For an avant-garde take on the Columbian dance genre cumbia, look no further than the wilfully experimentally and frankly excellent new record from The Meridian Brothers, who bring lashings of funk to the 2 x 12" release. The sounds range from playful and pop leaning with earworm-y melodies and catchy vocals hooks that stay with you for ages, to more hard-edged dancefloor sounds that will jack more open-minded crowds. Loose rhythms and innovative instrumentation adds real colour and unique charm to this record and one track 'Cumbia Del Pichaman' somehow sounds like a weird cover of son of a preacher man.

Review: Since the 1950s, Lyon has played host to a vibrant cross-cultural musical scene, where musicians with North African heritage gather together in cafes to make music that blurs cultural and stylistic boundaries. As "Maghreb K7 Club" shows, some of these social meetings resulted in similarly inspired and unlikely collaborations. The compilation includes tracks made between 1985 and 1997, by and large those that utilised synthesizers and drum machines as well as traditional North African instrumentation, musical motifs and vocals. It's a hugely vibrant collection, with nods towards synth-pop, 1980s electrofunk and, most thrillingly of all, Jean-Michel Jarre's "Oxygen" (see Salah El Annabi's "Hata Fi Annaba"). In a word: intoxicating.

Review: Talk about calling a spade a spade. Bongo Joe have opted for a Ronseal approach to album titles with this compilation. If that reference means nothing let's just say it does exactly what it says on the tin. Various iterations of electronica, sometimes dark, in other moments really rather delightful, it's a vast - or at least 17 tracks - showcase of varied talent. 'Etudes' by Claudine Chirac could almost be part of a 1990s video game score (we're thinking more 'Final Fantasy' than 'Tekken'). Pete Philippe Weiss' 'Subway' punches with the unapologetic positivity of 1980s power pop. Opening number 'Untitled', by Andreas Hofer, is an uneasy, brooding mood setter that comes complete with reversed out vocals. D-Sire's 'Wintertime' is a slice of synth-y stepping stuff John Carpenter would be proud of (instrumentally at least). So much worth mentioning - such as stripped electro cut 'Rap Yourself' by Air Project - it's impossible not to find something to feel passionate about.

Review: Although born and raised in Holland, the duo behind the Yin Yin project "make music for an imaginary tropical Island" based "somewhere between the Netherlands and South East Asia". It's an apt description of their undeniably humid, wide-eyed style, which variously combines elements of surf-rock, dub, psychedelia, ambient, electronica, spaced-out synth-pop and various traditional South East Asian musical tropes. It's a style that makes this long promised debut album a unique, distinctive and hugely vibrant listening experience. While inventive and colourful, their music is also largely dancefloor friendly and highly addictive. In other words, this is one debut album that's well worth picking up.
