John Anderson - "Inner City Blues" (3:29)
Angel Sound-Broadway - "Inner City Blues" (Acetate demo) (3:04)
Review: Cannonball celebrate the big two-oh with this delightful find of an original take of Gaye's seminal "Inner City Blues". Famously covered by Gil Scott Heron and Grover Washington Jr, here the legacy continues as the Italian collective rebooted John's recording with their own subtle instrumentation. With a full studio version on the Take side and rawer, floor-hitting funk finish on the Acetate side, we guarantee this will make you want to holler...

The Last One To Know (2:37)
Review: Leon Cook once said, "I think every musician should have the experience of being on the road with a teacher, like I was. (Jazz) is something that teaches you not only how to play your instrument but it teaches you how to be a person." Considering his craft a lifelong practice, 'Steppin' In' exemplifies this outlook. The song, originally licensed from the obscure Ohio guitarist's mega-limited LP 'Cookin' With Leon Cook', shows off his deft production, guitarwork and vocal style, and reflects on a once-lost relationship. The B-side, meanwhile, hears the relationship rekindled. Clearly, just as Cook implied, time heals all wounds, just as it teaches.

Review: The Delights were somewhat unsung heroes from the peak days of the Philly Soul scene back in the 60s and 70s. The local talents were first known as The Twilights and only recorded three demos in their early years though they did land on Phil-L.A of Soul in the mid-seventies. The musicians in the band did also work on several other records with other artists so had plenty of chops as this new 45rpm shows. It features 'Now We're Sure' with soaring vocal harmonies and lovely funky bass next to smooth drum work. The instrumental allows that to shine through even more.

Interview (3:39)
Review: The man behind two crucial rarities from the 60s ("Don't Make Me Mad" and "Black Belt"), Big Lee Dowell follows his new run of soul with another Cannonball release. "Are You Ready" hits with that rising Whitfield & Strong style sense of drama. Big chords, a little theatre, sugary backing vocals and Big Lee laying down a smoky but stern drawl... It's another slick shot from the Italian cannon. What's even neater on the B is Big Lee telling his story over the backing track (in a similar spine-tingly way as "Giorgio By Moroder") Immense.

Force De La Vie - "Holy Moses"
Force - "Holy Moses"
Review: Cannonball continue to provide an unparalleled service to devotees of the funk underground, this time drawing on a lucky acetate find from an undisclosed record spot in Barcelona. Amongst a stack of forgettable bits and pieces emerged this uncredited acetate, which astute digger Eduardo Domingo was able to decipher as the work of Force, a short-lived holy grail funk act led by Frank Filpetti on drums and songwriting duties. 'Holy Moses' came out in its original version in 1974, but this acetate carried a version with French vocals, which is now lovingly presented on this release, soon to be as rare as the original version if the international funk community has anything to do with it.

Review: One doesn't usually associate Italy with funk music on a gospel tip, but this is exactly what's happened on the third outing from fledgling label Cannonball. The Jackson Bros, a still mysterious outfit on our end, throw down the absolute truth on the vocal edit of "Thank You", a glorious and majestic pseudo disco ride that'll please everyone from dad to grandma. The instro cut is firmly in place for all your dance floor needs.

Get On Out There (3:26)
Why (3:51)
Review: Both of these tunes are from the early 80s and are somehow previously unreleased. Jay Stovall played with several bands before finally putting together Machine in 1977 at a time when disco soul and R&B were all in a happy and endless state of cross-pollination. That is embodied in 'Get On Out There', a killer bit of disco with nice raw claps cantering way over a strident beat that comes with a mandatory diva vocal. Flip it over and you'll find a much more sentimental and slow motion mood on 'Why', a rueful and reflection love song riding on lo-fi drums with gloriously soaring vocals.

What's The Matter With You (3:01)
I Still Love You (10:11)
Review: This reissue of a rather boxy, yet warm and spirited soul rarity came about as the result of a back-breaking search by the label Cannonball to scour every corner of the United States to find the correct Joe Johnson. As it turns out, there were many Joe Johnsons active in the 60s golden era of soul. But after a hard-pressed castaround, they finally managed to track down the original artist behind this lofty paean for an on-the-fence love interest, and were able to relicense it for this reissue. 'What's The Matter With You Baby' is a unique take on the soul formula, with the Louisianan crooner operating in his distinctive low tenor drawl. Bravo on this rekindling, Cannonball.

Jones & Gaston/The Cannonballs - "Do You Get The Message" (2:41)
The Cannonballs - "We Got The Message" (instrumental) (2:45)
Review: Robert Jones and Berdell Gaston were said to be a couple of session musicians who, like many, worked tirelessly in the background while others took the spotlight and accolades. "Do You Get The Message" was recorded as a demo by Gaston (with Jones on vocals) as The Grey Imprint in 1969. In the beginning, it never made it past the demo stage to get a release. This is a true digger's delight which fetches exorbitant prices on the secondhand market so we're glad the vintage treasure gets a needed re-issue. On the flip, the cheekily titled version by The Cannonballs is actually an instrumental.

U Need Me (vocal)
U Need Me (instrumental)
Review: The blistering, one-of-a-kind West Coast disco-funk record 'U Need Me' by LA Propinquity surfaces as part of a new body of historic productions initially intended for compilation on a full-length LP. For reasons undisclosed, this never happened; instead, Italian sonic exhumers Cannonball Records have been afforded the privilege of reissuing these tracks across a series of 7"s themselves. Hardly and criminially under-recognised in their day, the L.A. Propinquity were nonetheless composed of the angelic city's finest, with drummer James Gadson forming a prominent part. A blast from the 1970s, 'U Need Me' is a beaming slice of unrequited longing, set to delicious funk tones that are as maximized as they are unstrained.

Hurry Up Tomorrow
Review: This is a reissue of a rare soul single by The Nu' Rons, a vocal quartet from Salem, NJ who recorded only around four singles in their still-strong career. Surprisingly, 'You Came Thru' was not one of them, and is yet another new single to be issued for the first time via Cannonball, after renewed interest in the band came about sometime in the late 2010s. 'You Came Thru' is a slick and uptempo expression of gratitude for love, while the bundled-in 'Hurry Up Tomorrow' is a comparatively slow and sweet, yet no less tight, paean to the a golden era of love.

Review: Carolynn Porter is a name you might not know but that's something of a crime as she is one of the great unsung stars of the early Philly soul era. She grew up around a noted producer of the time, Manny Campbell, and was a vocalist in his band in the mid to late 60s alongside jazz legends John 'Papa' DeFrancesco and Grover Washington Jr. Although she never officially recorded, anything she gigged for years. The music on this new 7" was captured from the original reel tapes that are now stored at the University of Pennsylvania.

On The Disco Floor (mono version) (3:32)
Review: Razz-Ma-Tazz's sole single, 1982's sweet, jazz-funk era soul gem "Sugar Sugar Sugar", has long been sought after by collectors. Last year, Italy's Cannonball Records discovered a previously unissued Razz-Ma-Tazz track, recorded during the same period, and have decided to share it with listeners via this one-sided 7". While they've done a pretty good job cleaning up the long-hidden master tapes, the sound remains on the dusty side. The thing is, "On The Disco Floor" is such a fine disco-soul track - think emotional vocals, smooth horns, bustling bass and some frenetic drumming - that you barely notice. This is a slice of history that should be in every soul collector's record box.

Let Me Do It (4:35)
Review: After a sterling run of 7" soul cuts last year, Cannonball get straight back to it with this supremely rare slice from Split Evolution. The Chicago group had some hits in the late 70s and early 80s, but this one slipped through the cracks. Dave Morley from Tesla Groove Records procured a test pressing of this original which had never enjoyed a wider release until now, as sister label Cannonball presses it up for widespread enjoyment. It's a powerful, beautifully rendered slice of soul from the easy-tempo funk of 'Bedroom Eyes' to pitch-perfect B-side 'Let Me Do It', and the ever-devoted soul community will be quick to snap this one up for sure.

Review: Way back in 1981, husband-and-wife team Manny and Corrine Collier recorded and self-released "I'm Hurting For Your Love", a now ultra-rare slice of disco-boogie that was recently reissued by Cannonball Records. During the licensing process, the Conneticut-based Colliers revealed the existence of a number of unfinished demos. "Cold As Ice", an infectious fusion of elastic slap-bass, boogie grooves, sparkling synth sounds and a great lead vocal from Corrine, was one of those demos. Now tidied up and finished off by the Cannonball Records crew, it appears on this must-have seven-inch in both vocal and instrumental mix forms.

Fire Him Hire Me (Reel Tape demo) (3:48)
Review: Wonderful soul and funk reissue label Cannonball turn their attention to this hidden gem from Detroit. Unearthed by Peoples Records in the Motor City after sifting through overlooked or plain forgotten music from the area, "Fire Him Hire Me" is a bittersweet, jangly cut about tough job prospects, and it's presented in its raw, straight from the reel-tape demo version on the flipside of this record. Most likely to get the plays in the club though is the "Completed Version", undertaken by the label to bring the music up to a modern standard and give it the wings its demo status never allowed it before.

Just Another Face (4:01)
Review: Believe it or not, the two tracks featured on this seven-inch single were considered lost until two years ago, Herman 'Butch' Slaughter - founder member of Indianapolis band Words of Wisdom and now a respected DJ - rediscovered them on dusty reel-to-real tapes. They've been cleaned up a lot for release, though as you'd expect they're still a bit on the crackly and fuzzy side. Even so, they're well worth picking up. A-side 'You Got Me Smiing' is a cheery chunk of boogie-era disco-soul marked out by clipped guitar riffs, a warming groove, twinkling piano flourishes and a gorgeous lead vocal. Flipside 'Just Another Face' is a smoother and dreamier slab of early '80s soul featuring both male and female lead vocals. Like the A-side, it's rather good.

Review: Willie's second appearance this year on the ever-reliable Cannonball imprint, "Real Thing" was recorded around the mid to late 70s and acts as a pumping riposte to the overwhelming disco phenomenon that was wiping out every other genre and style at the time. Flexing extensively over two parts, there's a conceptual take on the recording as Willie staged it like a live club recording (complete with call outs to non-existing members of audience) as the troupe get busy with the disco funk hybrid in Willie's energetic, direct way. With art from Willie's daughter and fully comprehensive liner notes, once again this is another awesome excavation from Cannonball.
