Review: Carpet & Snares has decided to launch a new series of highly limited, hand-stamped 12" singles under the Carpet Lab banner. According to the imprint, the Lab series will be used to 'road test new music' and offer breaks to debutant artists. They've naturally started as they mean to go on by offering a first ever vinyl outing from Portuguese newcomer Blazout. A-side opener 'Flower of Life' is particularly alluring, with the confident newcomer wrapping a smooth and swinging tech-house groove with ultra-dreamy, enveloping chords, jaunty electric piano stabs and cut-up vocal snippets. Helio remixes, brilliantly re-imagining the track as a spaced-out slab of off-kilter electro/broken beat fusion. Elsewhere, 'Cosmic Mind' is bass-heavy, deep-tech roller, while 'Momento' is a bouncy and rubbery tech-house roller.

Review: Carpet & Snares is a label and record store based in Lisbon and managed by Jorge Caiado. It is the result of a plural vision of house and techno, with a desire to develop and express that vision - providing fans, artists and DJs with a physical space and an editorial platform. Following up the inaugural release by local lad Andre Leira, label head honcho Caiado steps up next for four lush excursions through the deep and evocative. Starting off on the A side with the the soulfully upbeat "AP135", an emotive groove with Motor City influences, as is "Tarradas". But it's the remix by Slow Life's S. Moreira that really owns it, featuring his trademark broken beats, emotive chord progressions and classic Detroit bleep melody - it's simply off the chain! Elsewhere, the smooth and sexy deepness of "Choices" calls to mind classic Nick Holder or Moodymann.

Review: Jorge Caiado takes charge of the tenth EP from Carpet & Snares with his tropically stylish mix of acid, techno and house. 'Wild Card' is first up with warped 303 lines undulating above an elastic bassline and amidst clattering perc. 'Life's Too Short' ups the pace a little with fresh house sound that has buffed metal chords and smeared pads over leggy beats. Things then take a turn to afterparty territory with 'Freak Not Freak' which is more late night and weird, and 'Wrong Mindset' then flips the vibe once more with its smeared dub chords and reverb-rich deep house drums.

Review: Carpets & Snares returns to action with some jaunty, off-kilter club fodder from their friends in the Portuguese tech-house community. This time round, the producer at the controls is Pandilla Ltd, an artist best known for unleashing 12"s full of tactile glitch-funk on his self-titled imprint. The real killer here is opener 'Bleu', a gloriously jumpy, shoulder-swinging fusion of tightly snipped electric piano stabs, jazzy synth-bass, Akufen-esque drums, curious vocal samples and oddball percussion sounds. Dan Andrei provides the obligatory flipside remix, re-casting the track as a deep, low-slung chunk of analogue house haziness perfect for wonky late-night sessions and bleary-eyed after-party shuffling.
