Techno
  1. Bacardi (5:16)
  2. Fourty Nine (8:29)
  3. Give You All My Love (5:26)
  4. Track 2 (6:15)
Review: That's right, folks, this ain't no reissue! When the names Chiwax and Robert Armani come together, heads instantly turn and think about what year the tunes might be from, but these four house killers are from late 2016, and it's clear that Armani has absolutely no intentions of slowing down any time soon. "BacardI" has the essence of golden era Armani, but there's something more subtle at play, an polished aesthetic that dives deeper into modern techno while retaining all of his original style and flair; the lead tune "Fourty Nine" reinvents the classic Chi-town sound and bursts through the place with a minimal sort of guise. Over on the B-side, "Give You All My Love" slams some hard-ass drums over a skeletal melodic rift and the man's classic use of repetitive vocal samples, which leaves "Track 2" to deliver that inimitable Armani acid...raw and uncompromising as when we first heard it. BIG!

Techno
  1. Muzik Man
  2. Arrow
  3. Poison Mind
  4. The Power
Review: Originally released on Dance Mania in 1997, Chicago house legend Robert Armani's classic track "Arrow" finds itself the subject of a re-release on Chiwax's Classic Edition series alongside three other thumping tracks from the archive. ON the A-side "Muzik Man" pairs thumping kicks with detuned synthetic bass guitar textures in a classic ghetto house style, while the classic "Arrow" pares things down with its low slung, deep Chicago grooves. Flip mover for "Poison Mind", which offers a dubbier take on the Dance Mania template with swirling chords and abstract yelps circling above thunderclaps of analogue interference, while "The Power" pairs 90s house stabs with floor shaking beats to round off an essential record for Dance Mania enthusiasts.

Review: DJ Deeon's visceral productions and stripped back approach date back to Dancemania's mid '90s output and have helped set the very foundations for the footwork movement that continues to soundtrack the best parties today. Often x-rated and always physical, his analogue magic still sounds as dark and direct as it did 20 years ago. This Freakmode EP sees Chiwax pick through Deeon's 94-96 archives, and highlights include the switchy/facsimile-seducing title track, the outrageously sleazy sentiments of "Yo Mouf" and the tight kick drum dynamics of "Hoodrat". Never subtle, always solid, Deeon we salute you.

  2. Don't Stop The Beat (6:04)
  3. Stomping Grounds 2 (5:47)
  4. The Kissing Game (5:57)
Review: It was 1993 when Chicago's DJ Skull first released these four face-melters, and we can only imagine the faces of the dancers hearing this for the first time, amid a frenzy of other, softer variations of house. Be warned: this is still a frightening prospect on the dance floor today, as it was almost 25 years ago. The Southside DJAX affiliate re-drops the never-ending tunnel of a tune that is "Stomping Grounds", followed by the more minimal, stripped-back percussion shots of "Don't Stop The Beat". On the flip, "Stomping Grounds 2" ups the tempo and chucks in a layer of hypnotics round the lower tones, while "The Kissing Game" reduces the tension and aggression of the previous tunes down to a softer, more soulful house swing guided by that dusty drum machine programming that makes it signature Skull material.

  4. Flip It (5:08)
Review: Blue Funk first surfaced on Relief Records way back in 1994, and helped establish DJ Sneak as one of Chicago house's most forthright talents. It remains something of a stone cold classic, so it's nice to see Chiwax giving it a deserved reissue. Like the original issue, it begins with the loopy, hard-wired Chi-town stomp of "The Lights (Part 1)", before rushing headlong into the "French Kiss" style riffs and handclap-heavy percussion of "The Lights (Part 2)". Flip for "Amiz", an acid-flecked shuffler supposedly inspired by Larry Heard's "Play It Out", and "Flip It", a classic Sneak banger that expertly combines wild, cut-up stabs with bombastic, in-your-face beats. Still crazy, after all these years.

Review: Since it first appeared back in 1999, Gemini's fourth full-length, The Music Hall, has become something of a sought-after item. Happily, Chi Wax has decided to re-master and re-issue it. Predictably, it's stood the test of time rather well, with Gemini - real name Spencer Kincy - serving up a whirlwind tour of late '90s Chicago obsessions. So, there's the jazz-flecked, proto-boompty bounce of opener "The Entrance", the Larry Heard-on-valium warmth of "Kiva Song", the stripped-back, disco-influenced house funk of "Let's Go", and - more surprisingly - the UK garage influenced bounce of "Dreamer". He also doffs a cap to early Daft Punk style techno-funk on "Future Beat", and fuses dirty bass, jazzy keys and swinging breakbeats on standout closer "Raplh".

Review: Chiwax inaugurate a series of ten planned releases from Mr Spencer Kincy aka Gemini with this timely reissue of one of the producer's most sought after releases. Quite where Kincy has been for the past 12 years or so isn't exactly clear but the potential prospect of some new Gemini material should be salivating for any self proclaimed fan of Chicago house. Traxx Vol 1 features all the tracks from Untitled, the EP Kincy released as Gemini on Cajual back in 1995 though not in the same order as that original pressing. Regardless, the chance to own the brilliant percussion workout that is "Joker" or the mind bending "Psychosis" should not be passed up.

  2. Shadowland (5:38)
  3. The Wave (6:20)
  4. Motion (7:09)
Review: There is not much more to say about Chicago's Gemini apart from the fact that he was a true house legend who, until recently, remained largely in the deep underground of the city's music, and has inspired a new generation of producers. Sadly, although he's still kicking about somewhere in the States, the man doesn't make music anymore. However, it's difficult to say whether he could have done much more these days, given how futuristic and cutting-edge his music-making was back then, and how fresh and it still sounds today. For these reasons, Germany's Chiwax have reissued a number of his EP's by now, and Shadowlust is the latest in the series. Much like the previous instalments, these four cuts are classic Gemini delivering the pure house magic - from "Log In" to "Motion", the beats are swinging, the chords heavy and pads climactic. If you've copped the other recent reissues then this is a must, if you haven't even heard of Gemini then please do yourself a favour..!

  1. R U Afraid

  4. Relaxing
Review: The sorely missed talents of Spencer Kincy have long been recognized as some of the most vital in the Chicago house story, and Chiwax have chosen to shed light on one of his lesser known but utterly essential releases that previously came to light on Earth Recordings. "R U Afraid?" is a moody workout with twitchy percussion, an insistent bassline and off-key stabs that wind up in a delightfully taut little shuffler. "Earth" is a touch more sassy with its playful slices of sax and forthright funk, and "Elevate Your Fellow Man" nudges closer to techy territory with its tightly wound loops of guitar licks and snappy drums. "Relaxing" takes a more esoteric trip into jazzy keys and brushed beats without losing any of the energy in the process.

Review: Berlin's Murphy Jax continues his impressive line of form with another a new 12" for the unstoppable Chiwax, the label which released his debut album a few years back. Aside from them, the dude has collaborated with a number of labels including Clone Jack For Daze and Hypercolour's Limited offshoot, dishing out some of his bouncy drum machine funk each and every time. "Tempation" features Mike Anderson on vocals and it's a veritable Chicago revival stunner; there's a Jori Hulkkonen edit of his own "Keep Your Body Moving" cut; "Don't Say No" is a chord-heavy stomper that's bound to receive quite the head nodding on the floor, while "Remember The Future" is given a proper seeing to by main man Nick Anthony Simoncino - raw beat thrashing and a whole load of analogue love.

At six tracks large - three on each side - this record is a weapon for the DJ and stand out vocal cuts include "Aww Shit" and Who's Psy Is This", while for instrumental melt downs check out "Speech Impediment" and the almost Yello sounding "Relieve Me".

Review: Chiwax continue their supreme reissue schedule with another stomper form Chicago's legendary Dance Mania quarters. It's Paul Johnson back in action and he's back with the third chapter of the Traxx Series, meaning a handful of gritty house bumpers with that inimitable Illinois swing. "Just Whistle" is a party tune, where fast-paced kicks and hi-hats ride beneath rhythmic whistles, while "Traction" is nastier and bouncier on the groove. Flip the wax and you have the filtered kick-snares of "Spring Back", and the more soulful vocals of "I Cannot Hide". "Try To Keep Up With My Beat" ties things off with that Johnson swagger, the bumpy house sound which so many have tried to imitate.

The incorrigible imprint returns with a reissue of Chicago badboy Paul Johnson's The Music In Me EP originally out in 1994 on the mighty Relief label. If you're looking for grizzly, tape-saturated beats and minimalistic melodies then look no further, you've reached the source of it all. Review: Ron "DJ Skull" Maney is one of Chicago's originals, a man who caught the ear of Ron Hardy in the late '80s and cut his teeth producing jacking house and fearless techno in the mid 1990s. These days his releases are sparse, to say the least, but they're always worth checking. There's much energetic dancefloor fodder on display for this first outing on Chiwax, from the fluid breakbeats, darting synths and low end pulse of "R2" (which sounds like a Chicagoan remake of the Orb's "U.F.Orb" and deeper styles of the Detroit-influenced "Beyond The Forest", to the hypnotic deep techno grooves of "Revenge of the Synth". The EP's best moment, though, is the outstanding "The Synth", in which a positive synth motif rises and falls over a tactile, acid-flecked techno rhythm.

Pure technoid body-jacking acid house business "Flange Trax" chat discourse erotically, "Freq Trak" slaps with relentless ghetto aggression while "Trof Trak" takes us on more of an off-beat dubby departure before stripping back to reveal a spine made of solid techno steel. If you've been paying attention to either artist or the Chiwax output in general you'll know what to expect from The Chasm, with eight tracks blessed by improvisational touches and that rough hewn approach to drum sounds and tape saturated finish. Review: German imprint RAWAX proudly welcomes Rhythm Of Paradise to the label. It all started in late 2016 when label boss Robert Drewek travelled to Bari, Puglia to play a gig with his friend Nico Lahs. He met this extraordinary fellow by the name of Michele Lamacchia and fell in love with the '90s inspired house music he played him. There's the very 808 State sounding "Vision" complete with catchy Fairlight birdcalls, the timeless Windy City style groove of the title track: which is as emotive and as melancholy as you like it. On the flip, "Nu World" takes things deeper, assisted by some classic neon-lit elements.. and a bit of cowbell for added measure! Finally, the jacking remix of "Vision" by Garden is the EPs finest moment by far and packed full with the right amounts of bounce 'n swing.

Review: In a curious twist on the usual reissue fare, Chiwax have laid their hands on Sneaky Tim's classic 1994 Dance Mania release and given the A-side over to Ricardo Villalobos and Heiko Schafer to drop a remix of "Mental Kombat" with all the minimal quirkiness that you would expect from the pair. Meanwhile on the flipside the original version of "Planet Wall" sounds as flawless as ever, marching forth with its wistful chord hook and sax lick putting a necessary ruffness into sublime deep house. "Ever Body" turns the heat up with its garage bump and nagging vocal chant, primed to set off any peak time situation.

Elsewhere things get jazzy thanks to the elegant fretless bass wanders and insistent kicks of "Mistical Jorney" and the hip-swaying brushed drum swing and warm organs of "Crissy Jazz."

  4. Along The Way (6:59)
Review: One of the windy city's most recognised exponents of Chicago house, Boo Williams, returns to the German run Chiwax label for the second time following last year's orange Pleasant Dreams 12". There's no denying the tracks on this red Last Of The Past 12" are the types that so many try to imitate; like the basic, but perfect one-two bassline of "End Of Days", or the filter sweeps and slinky keys of "Party Time". Then there's "Blue Horizon", a bassline driven club track that sounds like a mellow Fanon Flowers cut from his Studio Sounds label, while "Along The Way" is what you'd imagine an Autumn-time soundtrack to Chicago's south side would sound like.
