Review: 'Hearing The Water Before Seeing The Falls' is Andrew Wasylyk's second LP for the esteemed Clay Pipe Music label. The album is a refreshing, palette-cleansing exercise in instrumental beats, cinematic soundscapes, and seafaring adventure music; the Scottish artist is renowned for his sensitive ambient cinematic pieces, often complementing the works of visual artists. For example, this project saw Wasylyk travel across five continents before its making, visiting many of the locations that will suffer from climate change in much less than half a century from now. Cameo appearances on various instruments from Alabaster DePlume (Angus Fairbairn) appear across the album, while many more climactic string sequences occur like hesitant apparitions from ghosts of the sea.

Review: Cate Brooks is now up to a seventh release on Clay Pipes and with each new outing she always evolves. 'Easel Studies' is no different and sees the artist going further than ever before beyond the pale when it comes to sound synthesis and experimentation on the Buchla Music Easel. What results is melody that's both abstract and alien but still beautifully compelling. She layers it up in hypnotic fashion across ten tracks that range from the cosmic to the synthetic, the ambient to more rhythmic. It's the sort of record to put on loud and tune in to closely and lose all sense of space and time.

Review: This is the third time Jon Brooks' "Shapwick" has been on vinyl, but the first as the "Tawny Owl" version. It is named after a small rural village Brooks drove through in 2011 and was inspired by the darkness of the forests around him. It features a range of sound sources from a song harp to modular analogue synths, acoustic and electronic instruments via found sounds and piano recordings. It was all originally recorded to tape and so has plenty of blurred edges and warming hiss to it and comes on numbered pale blue vinyl.

Review: "As a long-time fan of soundtracks and library music, I was thrilled by the opportunity to see just how much emotion I could compress into the brief connecting links that would augment a furtive kiss, a painful psychic vision, or a breeze across the bones of a scorched landscape," says Timmi Meskers, the North Country, New York-based artist behind Garden Gate. "The first glimmer of Magic Lantern flickered over the kitchen sink, if memory serves. I was cleaning up with a dear friend, author Roan Parrish, and we were discussing how we could collaborate creatively. "Our first idea was that she would share prose to inspire my themes, and inversely, I would share a few original themes to inspire her writing. Before we knew it, what started as a handful of stories and songs, damp with soap suds, ended up becoming a fully scored audiobook anthology." In practice, that sounds like achingly beautiful compositions packed with a sense of wonder and mystery, adventures and experiences waiting for a narrative, blissed out stargazing scores and spectacular ambient movements.

Review: Gilroy Mere is one of many alter egos of Oliver Cherer, and when working under this moniker there's a predisposition for transport-themed things to happen. The last album, beautiful and beguiling The Green Line, had a rich, dark green vintage British train on the cover just in case the title wasn't enough. In the past, he's done things themed on bus routes. This time, the locomotive on the sleeve is red.
More so, Adlestrop is a reference to one of many UK railway stations axed in the brutal Beeching Act of the 1960s - a cull of small stations deemed unviable, cutting off many communities. The opener, a strange, almost medieval slice of birdsong, chant, and twinkling chimes, even reels off a list of others that were closed. From there, we go deeper into sounds and words that are as inspired by the idea of rural England and travel as they are the country's eccentricity, which is so commonly founding its leftfield electronic output.

Review: On Through Passages of Time, Clay Pipe founder Frances Castle - AKA The Hardy Tree - has attempted to "soundtrack buildings and areas of London that no longer exist". Fundamentally, it's a kind of an extended ode to a London that has been cast aside in the rush towards gentrification. Musically, it feels contemporary but nostalgic, a feeling enhanced by the use of vintage equipment ("clusters" of sequenced Moog synthesizers, proto-sampling keyboard the Mellotron, and so on). Most of all, though, this is down to Castle's ability to conjure evocative aural images through the use of bittersweet melodies, melancholic chord progressions, and snatched field recordings.

Review: Michael Tanner's Plinth project has been a consistent source of quality electronics since the early 00s, with the artist releasing an album every three or four years. 2010's Music For Smalls Lighthouse was an instant hit when it landed here the first time around, so this tidy reissue from Clay Pipe is a valuable addition to our charts. If you haven't heard it, you can probably already hear its magnetic waves of organic instruments sweeping through the air, brought into shape by luscious drones and ambient soundscapes of all shapes and sizes. What we love about it the most is its natural ability to reign on elements of the wind and the sea with such ease, taking the listener onto a mystical voyage across oceanic planes of sound. A beautiful collection of tracks.

Review: The redoubtable Roberts has carved out a considerable niche for himself in the last decade, standing proud as a warm and authentic voice of Scottish folk - moreover, his work has rarely sounded more traditional or earthy than on this collaboration with James Green of the Sheffield based Big Eyes Family Players, who plays a variety of instruments including the little-known harmoniflute. Equal parts heartwarming and melancholic, the laments and celebrations on Plaint Of Lapwing possess the magical and paradoxical ability to hark back to a bygone era of a mystical folk realm overseen by legends like Incredible String Band and C.O.B. whilst engaging in style with the whys and wherefores of 2016.

Review: Tyneham House is a serene folk gem, first issued in 2018 as part of the output of the British instrumental duo of the same name. Chordophonal waltzes and soul-quelling melodic progressions make this an album almost impossible not to relax to. The album is inspired by the story of Tyneham, a now abandoned "ghost village" in Dorset that was evacuated during World War II and never saw true re-habitation. Up-close, breathy and mournful, this is not one to be missed for those who like their music steeped in time and place.

Review: Vic Mars spent many years in Nagoya, Japan, and it shows in the delicate beauty of his compositions. Fusing understated elegance with the lilting folk traditions of the British Isles, his music is equal parts pastoral and ethereal. Following plenty of previous appearances on boutique London label Clay Pipe, he returns with "Inner Roads & Outer Paths", a thoroughly calming sojourn through fingerpicked guitar refrains, plaintive piano and plenty more instrumentation besides. There's a subtle tint of processing that lends an otherworldly edge to the ambience Mars is imparting - a truly soul-nourishing departure from the intensity of the modern age.
