Review: Ugetsu from Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers is a live album put out originally by Riverside Records in October 1963. It features six cuts - although more were said to have been played on the night, but didn't fit on the record - and all are played by Blakey on drums, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Wane Shorter on tenor sax, Cedar Walton on piano and Reggie Workman on double bass. It's a straight-up jazz set with classics like 'I Didn't Know What Time It Was' sounding all the better for being live and direct.

Review: Clifford Brown is one of history's finest trumpet payers. Here he adds his style to nine engaging tunes recorded in 1955 with the Max Roach Quintet. One of the leading hard bop gangs of the time, tenor saxophonist Harold Land, pianist Richie Powell, and bassist George Morrow all featured and gave rise to these lively and energetic cuts. The likes of 'Cherokee' certainly blow away any cobwebs with the fluid and florid trumpets dancing over sizzling drums, and the more swinging (and excellently named) 'Gerkin For Perkin' is super short but sweet.

Review: Butcher Brown is a polymath-like band from Richmond, here following their critically lauded 2022 album Butcher Brown Presents Triple Trey with another superb long player. Solar Music arrives vida Concord Jazz and though rooted in jazz, very much finds the band expanding their horizons and exploring the spaces in between traditional genres. Their dynamic approach to recording sees the band draw on their own personal heritages and upbringing in Richmond to blend together elements of soul, funk, rock, and hip-hop. Several top guests including Pink Siifu, Charlie Hunter, Braxton Cook, Jay Prince, Nappy Nina, Keyon Harrold, Michael Millions and more all feature.

Review: Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Butcher Brown are a five-piece band with a solid run of heavy-grooving records behind them, but they're switching things up on this new record for Concord Jazz. The album finds band member Tennishu leading as he grips the mic for a big band approach to hip-hop which draws on the band's considerable skills to render a widescreen twist on rap with more than a little jazz informing the sound. Nodding to past hip-hop legends (shouting out Biggie Smalls on 'Unbelievable', for example) but bringing their own bold and brassy sound to the fore, this is an assured and hard-funking record with mass appeal.

Review: For rock fans, Creedence Clearwater Revival's show at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1970 is legendary. Now, all these years later, it gets an official release that features the much-talked-about live show in all its glory. Enduring hits as 'Fortunate Son', 'Proud Mary' and 'Bad Moon Rising' all feature and the audio has been restored and mixed by Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell. As well as the album dropping, there is also a documentary concert film Travelin' Band: Creedence Clearwater Revival at the Royal Albert Hall which has been narrated by Jeff Bridges and directed by Bob Smeaton. Well worth checking.

Review: DIIV is an indie band from Brooklyn who first started recording in 2010 together. The band is a mix of post rock, lo-li, Indie with some shoegaze elements. The band has garnered some strong success for an indie band with their last album reaching the Billboard top 200 album list. Frog In Boiling Water is their fourth album and reminds many of 90s UK bands like My Bloody Valentine and Ride. Their first single 'Brown Paper Bag' was released on the same day the new album was announced just a few months ago. The lead single has all the marks for a classic shoegaze sound that should bode well for the band with their growing following of fans. This version is released on lime green vinyl

Review: Everyone remembers the saying about slow-boiled frogs, but what actually happens when you attempt to boil one in real life? Surprise, surprise, modern science counters the aphoristic claim with a charge of falsehood; that real-life frogs do indeed tend to jump out of boiling water regardless of the time it takes to boil one. New York slowcore and shoegaze favourite DIIV's latest album Frog In Boiling Water seems to recall this mood as much, propelling us into action with the femural puissance of an amphibian's hunkers, despite the album's consistent plodding, its dourness, its steadiness, its slow boil. Naturally, in light of the boiled frog analogy's usual connotations, the album is nominally about the contradictions of late stage capitalism and overwhelming technological advance, with its sound evoking the feeling of bowling into a non-risk-assessed future, and the bittersweet sense of bliss and personal confrontation this evokes at every turn.

Review: 'You Must Believe In Spring' is the celebrated 70th studio album from pioneering jazz pianist Bill Evans. Now remastered by the legendary artist of the trade Kevin Gray for Concord, the smoking, kiss-curled jazz piano great gets a full-on reminisce in stereo, this time charting his dextrous, chromatic ivory-straddling as part of a trio, with Eddie Gomnez on bass and Eliot Zigmund on drums. Soft, pining and full of harmonic curiosities and indistinct tempi, it includes a range of Evans' originals and covers, including Frank Laico's 'You Must Believe In Spring' and Johnny Mandel's 'Theme From M*A*S*H*'.

Her album Source was a deserving Mercury Prize-nominee and here she reworks it through a series of new collars with the likes of DJ Harrison, Moses Boyd, Dengue Dengue Dengue and Georgia Anne Muldrow. Each of the new versions retains plenty of the soul and invention of the originals but adds in a range of other influences that take them in a more driving, groove-orientated direction. The results are stunning, with plenty of great options for DJs who like to play slow and sensuous. The Kaidi Tatham remix of 'La Cumbia Me Esta Llamando' is our personal pick.

Review: Long based sax supremo Nubya Garcia's debut album was a real thing of beauty so it only makes sense it now gets revisited by a team of super remixers for this special Record Store Day release. Presented on limited edition turquoise marbled vinyl it opens with Makaya McCraven's airy and floaty light remix of 'Source' before DJ Tahira layers up 'Stand With Each Other' with ethno-grooves that are loose and off kilter. That tumbledown vibe continues on the scruffy deep house version of 'Together Is A Beautiful Place To Be' by Shy One before big jazz house feels from Mark De Clive-Lowe close things down.

Review: Robert Grasper very much announced his arrival on the world stage with Black Radio 1. And Black Radio 2 only took him into the stratosphere. Both records proved him to be a master of hip hop, broken beat and jazz and able to call upon some of the biggest names in those scene from Jill Scott to Erykah Badu. Both of those timeless records, as the title suggest, are steeped in Black music traditions and so is this third one. Here the award winning Glasper (nine Grammy nominations and four wins) works with modern greats such as Gregory Porter, Q Tip, BJ The Chicago Kid, Ty Dolla Sign and many more to cook up another powerful statement for these troubled times.

Review: In the grand tradition of devilish offspring on film, has there even been one as powerfully creepy as little Damien in The Omen? The film may show its age these days, but the Gregory Peck-starring horror remains an all-time classic, and that's in no small part down to Jerry Goldsmith's score. Just listen to the eerie choral chants opening up 'Ave Satani' and feel the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. This seminal horror soundtrack has now been repressed on a limited blood red and black splattered vinyl, all the better to channel your own demons from the comfort of your home.

Review: When Keyon Harrold lists the influences that he turned to during the creation of his rich and evocative new album Foreverland, he cites the likes of Radiohead, Fleet Foxes, Fela Kuti, John Coltrane, and, for a second, he becomes vulnerable; the list is too basic, too serious-music-listener-starter-pack. But, out of that moment of insecurity, he spins an indelible flex: "You are what you eat, and I have a pretty strict diet in dope shit. Taking in Keyon Harrold's career to-date, it's clear that the 'world-class trumpeter' (Essence) and composer is very serious about that diet. He's a jazz musician but in the most expansive sense, working with a list of dream collaborators: generational legends Keith Richards and Diana Ross; rap stars like Mac Miller and Nas; neo-soul icons Erykah Badu and D'Angelo; and modern soul stars Black Pumas and Leon Bridges. His circle of regular collaborators is formidable and includes his music industry mentor Common (who hired him for his first touring gig), his New School classmate Robert Glasper, and GRAMMY winners Maxwell, PJ Morton, Gregory Porter, and YEBBA. Even apart from its compositional intricacies and stylistic innovations, Foreverland is a triumph of resilience and empowerment. "What will be said when you're gone?", says Keyon. "If you're not living life - getting beat up, getting your heart broken, winning, losing - what are you doing? What about your life can people learn from? If you don't put yourself in the ring sometimes, there won't be anything." On Foreverland, Keyon takes life's challenges head-on - and emerges, in both music and in life, with a renewed sense of purpose.

Review: Ever since Los Angeles noise-rock trio HEALTH provided the score to Rockstar Games' Max Payne 3, both their sonic and career paths have veered down a direction that avid early fans still have trouble reconciling. Shifting from predominantly instrumental, spasmodic chaos to a unique form of laser-focused, industrial metalwave; their 2019 opus Vol 4: Slaves Of Fear newly established them as the ultimate electronic act for metal fans. While lockdown led to the Disco 4 collaborative albums, split into two separate volumes and boasting a remarkably dynamic array of features from the likes of alt hip-hop guru JPEGMAFIA, trap-metal phenom Ghostemane, hyperpop absurdist duo 100 Gecs, industrial overlords Nine Inch Nails and even groove metal legends Lamb Of God, their fifth full-length Rat Wars draws on the insidious influence from these more aggressive collaborators while simultaneously offering some of their most vulnerable, melancholic and fragile material to date. Complete with a Godflesh sample, it's rather fitting when considering HEALTH's attempts to marry such disparate yet equally punishing sonics mirrors Justin Broadrick's forays from decades ago. Grinding, mechanical percussion fuses to ethereal, androgynous vocals all drowned within EBM sickliness, whilst unpacking utterly nihilistic worldviews. Imagine Placebo or The Pet Shop Boys writing an album with Ministry, and you may start to have an idea of the war you're heading into...

Review: I Prevail teased this latest new album with a hard-hitting single 'Body Bag' that won plenty of fans' attention. The Michigan band has been twice nominated for Grammys, and this monumental new long player is likely another strong shout. It finds Brian Burkheiser and Eric Vanlerberghe on vocals, Steve Menoian and Dylan Bowman on guitars, and Gabe Helguera on drums, all in top form and with boundless energy. Rock riffs pair off with EDM synths and big grooves to make for an all-consuming sound that will blow your head off.

Review: Puerto Rican salsa singer Hector Lavoe first released La Voz in 1977 via Fania Records, a specialist imprint formed by execs Johnny Pacheco and Jerry Masucci in 1964, homing in on salsa, boogaloo and latin jazz. Now reissued via Concord, the eight-track, heavy-set salsa album is a slice of Lavoe's life back in the 70s, encapsulating his jolly nature, not least born in part from his crediting for helping pioneer the genre in its early heyday. Listeners will also note the inclusion of 'Mi Gente' in the GTA: Vice City Stories soundtrack, but we've no doubt that, on stumbling on the album here on Juno, they'll appreciate every track here regardless of that chance context.

Review: The Original Jazz Classics Series turns its attention here to the one and only Miles Davis, who worked with his quintet for the boldly titled Workin' With The Miles Davis Quintet album. This period back in the mid-50s was a halcyon one for Davis and jazz and for that reason the band is often called one of the best in jazz history. Alongside Davis on his trusty trumpet, John Coltrane was on tenor sax, with piano from Red Garland, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on the sticks. This new version of this classic record has been remastered from original analogue tapes and been pressed to 180g vinyl so its sounds superb.

Review: There are few finer alto-sax players in the world than Art Pepper. By the time of his death run 1982 his legacy was already assured after a fantastic run of albums such as his standout Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section. Plus 11 is right up there too, though: the 1960 jazz record saw Art work with an ensemble of 11 other musicians arranged by Marty Paich. It's one of a number dates the two played together that year but the only one with Pepper leading. Pepper's clarinet performance on 'Anthropology' and the alternate takes of 'Walkin'' are real standouts.

Review: The fifteenth and final studio album by REM, one of the most influential bands of the 1980s and 1990s, came as a triumphant coda for their long-standing career together. The title is noted as the last utterance to ever have escaped the lips of lead singer Michael Stipe on an REM record, tying the bow on a lengthy career while embracing the tide of change. Regarded as relatively upbeat and energetic compared to their balladic former albums, it's a bittersweet goodbye - the likes of 'Uberlin' and 'Oh My Heart', for all their teary jovialty, were never performed in concert, couching the band's sayonara moment in as much mystery as it did finality.

Review: A quarter of century has now passed since the release of Up, R.E.M's 11th studio album. It was a set that perplexed some critics on its original release in 1998, in part because it was more experimental in tone (while remaining a fine, song-based set) and saw the band employ drum machines and electronic instrumentation to expand their sound palette. As this anniversary reissue proves, Up has aged well and is arguably ripe for reappraisal by those critics who initially panned it. Even so, what makes this double-disc celebratory edition special is CD2, which boasts an 11-track recording of a surprise set the band played in Los Angeles in early 1999. As well as featuring fine versions of tracks from the album ('Daysleeper', 'Lotus'), we're also treated to storming run throughs of such favourites as 'Losing My Religion', 'Man On The Moon' and 'It's The End of the World As We Know It'.

Review: Yet another first time reissue of a classic, Mongo Santamaria's 'Sofrito'. Don't be confused by the pico de gallo on the front cover; this isn't a salsa album, but rather a career-defining jazz, Afro-Cuban music and funk selection of delights. First released in 1976, it was the master conguero's (conga player's) most defining album, and now gets a proper remaster by Kevin Gray.

Review: Preceded by a single of the same name last year, The Tipping Point marks the return of one of the most inventive pop groups to ever do it. In the 1980s, Tears For Fears expanded the possibilities of what a commercial song could be with sophisticated songwriting, unabashed bombast, unexpected curveballs and jaw-dropping hooks. Given the influence they've had, they might not sound so revolutionary amongst the generations of pop acts who have followed their lead, but they return vital and full of purpose. Embracing new sonics but staying true to the songwriting as the central focus of the Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal's project, it's a triumphant return from a truly seminal group.

Review: Whether you're reading this and thinking Christmas seems a way off, or here because there's a next day delivery and time is ticking, A Charlie Brown Christmas is quite possibly one of the most exquisite scores to the silly season you're likely to come across. Better yet, it's a complete curveball, with this Peanuts cartoon score hardly topping the list when it comes to famous Yuletide music.

Sophisticated stuff, imagine slow drinks in a late night jazz bar. Surprisingly sexy, refined, laidback to the point where you can almost see flames dancing in a fireplace, and shadows licking at the walls. Of course, we do get 'Hark, The Herald Angels Sing' and 'Christmas Time Is Here', taking us back to the best parts of school age winters gone by, both delivered via vocal choirs. But, overall, this is a truly tasteful example of how to do festive well.

Review: The pianist Vince Guaraldi released 'Impressions Of Black Orpheus' in 1962, in response to the film 'Black Orpheus' - the Brazilian film by Marcel Camus. The film had taken the world by storm three years earlier: a contemporary retelling of the Ovidian story of Orfeu and Eurydice, its soundtrack had the unintended effect of introducing the distinct sound of bossa nova to the world. The reinterpretation of the soundtrack by Guaraldi's trio here gets an expansion via Concord, with new unreleased recordings takung up a mammoth, complementary four new sides of vinyl.

Review: Floridian melodic metalcore outfit Wage War have opted to do the unthinkable (with regards to their scene), and dropped an acoustic project, reimagining cuts from all three of their previous full-lengths; 2017's Deadweight, 2019's Pressure, and 2021's 'Manic'. With a title like The Stripped Sessions it should be pretty evident that this isn't the bombastic affair the band's name usually indicates, instead channelling folk influences that expand as far as the surprisingly tender cover of the classic Johnny Cash cut, 'Folsom Prison Blues'. Produced by local fan and friend, A Day To Remember vocalist, Jeremy McKinnon; this is a most curious case of a group delivering from a facet which fans didn't realise they thirsted over.
