Review: Despite looking like a hairy Open University geography lecturer, Martin "Acid Pauli" Gretschmann has forged a career out of making the sort of oddball, semi-organic house and techno that appeals to the Crosstown Rebels clan. Here, he gets his reward by being offered the chance to mix the latest volume in their occasional Get Lost series. As a DJ mix, it ticks all the right boxes, moving from shuffling, eyes-closed deepness and dancefloor electronica, to tactile techno and dream-house, via the sort of quirky tackle that marks out his club sets (see Jan Turkenburg's "In My Spaceship"). For the heads, there are a number of previously unseen exclusives, including tracks from Nicholas Jaar, Nu and Gretschmann himself.

Review: Much has changed for Ali Love since the release of his Love Harder in 2010. For starters, he's fallen in with the Hot Creations camp, scored a massive chart hit ("Benediction", with Hot Natured) and seen his reputation soar. This latest full length - the belated follow-up to Love Harder - shows how far he's come. While the bright electrofunk synths, '80s soul vocals and Italo-influenced rhythms of old remain, P.U.M.P contains far more tactile, wide-eyed deep house moments than we've come to expect. It's a subtle evolution - there are still plenty of near Balearic synth-pop moments - but a successful one. The result is an effortlessly sweet and accessible album that blends throbbing dancefloor moments with baggier, more laidback fare.

Perfect Picture (Skream remix)
Perfect Picture (Luca Cazal & Dubka remix)
Perfect Picture (Route 94 remix)
Review: Given that it was arguably one of the strongest cuts on his acclaimed third album, P.U.M.P, it's nice to see Ali Love's Perfect Picture getting a single release. The original - a typically exhilarating fusion of rave-era breaks, Balearic house chords and Hot Creations tech-house throb is joined by a trio of remixes. Skream kicks things off, abandoning dubstep and disco (his most recent obsession) in favour of a thumping, woozy fusion of tech-house pump and grime style electronics. On the flip, there's some tactile, groovy deep house/tech-house fusion from Luca Cazal & Dubka (our pick) and, most triumphantly, a late night dub from Route 94 blessed with epic breakdowns and a sub-heavy groove.

Review: Bringing one of those vocals that will be nagging in the noggin long after the lights have come up; Ali Love and Kali are in prime pop-picking mode with this new single on Crosstown Rebels. The structure of the track is still in keeping with the label's slick take on house music; while the vocals intone a message of massaged ego that translates smoothly to Waze & Odyssey's more brooding remix. Maceo Plex comes in with a more romantic vision for the track, laying out thick reams of synth in a seductive late night style that can bleed outwards to fill a space large or small.

Maratone (6:32)
Review: Following some great releases on top labels like Desolat, Saved Records, Kling Klong and Kaluki Musik, Chilean Francisco Allendes is back with 'What You Do' on Crosstown Rebels. A sweltering house number aimed squarely at the main room, its infectious vocal atop is perfect for getting those heads down on the dancefloor, something that the now Ibiza-based DJ/producer has been an expert at over the last years. Over on the flip, the inimitable Harry Romero takes up remix duties and gets deep, down and dirty as expected, followed by one more original by Allendes in the form of 'Maratone' - a trippy minimal/tech house cut more suited to the afterhours.

Review: Crosstown Revels does a fine job of serving up accessible electronic music that is always built with a leftfield perspective. It is Amberoom featuring Blakkat & BabyGirl who take care of this new single, a vocal house delight that will likely form the centrepiece of plenty of epic tech house sets this summer. The airy vocal is spine tingling and heavenly, the drums deep and the bass warm and rooted to the floor. Lucas Frota & Blakkat remix into a more tribal and percussive style then Radio Slave offers a couple of post rave, old school breakbeat laced versions with dreamy pads that could take you up or bring you back down depending on the setting.

Just An Illusion (Appleblim Black Mirrorball mix)
Review: Crosstown Rebels excel themselves on this release, with the certified house hero MK and Bristol lynchpin Appleblim tasked with reimagining "Just An Illusion" one of the more infectious, floor appropriate tracks from Amirali's recent debut album In Time. The track has already been tweaked by Real Tone's Franck Roger but this twelve is the one, with MK opting for a moody yet sultry house direction, slipping Amirali's melancholic vocal over a trademark bassline dub groove complemented by plenty of those 90s snares, kicks and hi hats. In contrast, Appleblim continues his revelatory run of remixes (did you check those Crazy P ones? Goddamn!) with a more experimental approach that fills the expanses around stripped back, snapping percussive mainframe with a murky low end.

Review: The hitherto unknown but clearly talented Amirali were first introduced to the world when Damian Lazarus handpicked one of his productions to open proceedings on last year's Get Lost 4 mix CD. It was clear Lazarus had larger plans for the Iranian Canadian producer, and following a breakthrough Crosstown 12" earlier this year the label now presents the full artistic vision of Amirali in the shape of a debut album. In Time demonstrates Amirali Shahrestani has an uncanny talent for veering between the many strands of contemporary electronic music, each of the thirteen tracks weaved together intoxicatingly with his undeniable craft as a musician. Amidst the usual Crosstown fare such as "Just an Illusion" and the delightfully wonked "Beautiful World" there are more introspective moments which lend In Time a sense of longevity lacking from so many "dance music albums."

Grow Man Cry
Review: Al hail the return of the Aphrohead! Over twenty years on from Felix 'Da Housecat' Stallings first surfacing under the Aphrohead guise, the US production and DJ legend is set to explore the alter ego with a new album length adventure slate for release on Crosstown Rebels later in the year. Whilst full details of this sixth studio album from Aphrohead are still under wraps, the Crosstown crew have laid down a marker for what to expect in the shape of Grown Man Cry. One sided white labels are geared for the clubs and that's certainly the case here as Felix offers up a slab of no nonsense emotionally weighted house music that's an exercise in wringing the maximum impact from the minimum of elements. Stallings production expertise really comes to the fore here as subtle filtering is implemented over a relentlessly jacking 909 groove.

Grown Man Cryy (Carl Craig Brainy Grimlin remix) (9:15)
Review: We can thank Damien Lazarus and his Crosstown Rebels label for coaxing Felix 'Da Housecat' Stallings into returning to his Aphrohead project, with last year's white label release of "Grown Man Cry" heralding proceedings. Back in September, a full album called Resurrection followed and suggest Stallings remains on fine form despite his vintage as a producer. A full 12" release for the loopy techno madness of album centrepiece "Grown Man Cry" now arrives and it's backed with a trademark remix from Planet E boss Carl Craig. The self-styled Brainy Grimlin remix finds Craig extending the track to almost ten minutes, expertly teasing the original track before dropping into his own throbbing arrangement with that sampled vocal appearing very late in the game.

Review: Late last year, Felix "Da Housecat" Stallings donned his long-discarded Aphrohead alias for the first time in 12 years. That single, the Mr G style loopy techno stomp of "Grown Men Cry", forms the centrepiece of Resurrection, Stallings' first album under the Aphrohead guise since 2002. It's a surprisingly mixed bag stylistically, variously doffing a cap to vintage, Derrick Carter style boompty ("Let's Prance"), locked-in tech-house ("Elevator (I'll Take The Stairs)", dense tribal grooves ("1King, 1Queen"), acid ("Medusa") and fluid, melodious deep house ("Come To Me"). It's a pretty stripped-back and no-nonsense affair throughout, with the emphasis firmly on robust dancefloor workouts.

Review: Canadian duo Art Department have all the ingredients of success at their disposal: experience, reputation and, most importantly, hype. With the latter in full effect right now, it's safe to say that The Drawing Board, their debut full length, is one of the most anticipated house sets of 2011. So is it any good? Certainly, those who've already fallen in love with their touchy-feely, melancholy take on house will enjoy it immensely. Like the work of guest Seth Troxler's Visionquest (and, to some extent, Benoit & Sergio), there's a distinct melodic warmth to Art Department's shuffling beats, woozy electronics and half-whispered vocals. It's this, more than anything, which makes The Drawing Board worthwhile listening.

Review: It's been pretty hard to escape the hoo-hah surrounding Art Department ever since YouTube footage surfaced of the dropping "Without You" at the Hot Natured DEMF party back in June. The Juno editorial branch is in complete agreement that such hype is totally justified on this debut release for Crosstown Rebels. "Vampire Night Club" sits across the A Side with a guest spot from Seth Troxler, er, vamping it up on vocals backed by some haunting harmonies from Art Department's Kenny Glasgow. It's the dynamic usage of infectiously dark bass patterns and intermittent synth stabs that help cement the eerie atmosphere that pervades the track. This sense of pulsing menace is transferred to the B Side brilliance of "Without You". Made for play in dark venues where the crunching beat, throbbing bassline and creeped out vocal refrain from Glasgow can reverberate around the walls and your cerebral cortex, "Without You" is destined to become a mainstay in record boxes for many months to come.

In The Mood
Review: Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White have both enjoyed solo success over the years, but only recently together as their brainchild Art Department. After teasing us with last year's massive "Without You", they now release their debut album The Drawing Board courtesy of Crosstown Rebels. "Much Too Much" features melting lyrics originally written by Frankie Knuckles, Robert Owens and Satoshi Tomiie that are now crooned by Glasgow over a hypnotic and down tempo beat. "Tell Me Why" Parts I and II are again vocally dominated and layered over a simple yet captivating bass line that shuffles ever forward. Seth Troxler lends his deep and eerie vocal talents on "Vampire Nightclub" - a light and airy musical base that contrasts against Troxler's warped vocals. "The Excuse" -a dusky collection of electronic clicks and clacks leads to "In The Mood" on the D-side whose gorgeously old skool hip-hop style vocal showcase a welcome other side to the album.

Living The Life (Aba Therepy version)
Review: Kenny Glasgow & Jonny White aka Art Department came bounding into the spotlight with their huge hit "Without You" on Crosstown Rebels last year. Enlisting the vocal services of musical prodigy Seth Troxler on their second release, "Living the Life" is a smart move considering the massive popularity of Troxler right about now. Introduced with a warped and dark Troxler vocal, indecipherable and eerie, it leads into a sensual drum beat which is instantly captivating. Crisp claps and a mellow synth line are integrated bit by bit and once layered, the elements working together make for a downtempo delicacy. The ABA "Therapy Version" is equally alluring, dreamily extending the vocals and meandering smugly along. Whilst it doesn't have the smash and grab of "Without You", it falls effortlessly into a more mature and intriguing category. This is exactly what Art Department needed to do with their second release on CR, instantly diminishing any one hit wonder categorization.

Review: Art Department and Crosstown Rebels seem to have taken the house world by storm in the last two years. Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White's "We Call Love" has been picked apart carefully put back together again by the legendary Balearic beardo DJ Harvey for a limited one sided, hand stamped, hand numbered white label. Slow burning and downtempo, "We Call Love" plays with the original's raw electric guitar melodies, piercing key sequences and chopped vocal snippets. Sensual and lethargically bouncy, it's a late night house track made in typical modern and blase style from the CR camp. Be quick!

Review: Barcelona-based tech house heroes Anthony Middleton and Luca Saporito are back. This time for Damian Lazarus' esteemed Crosstown Rebels imprint with "In The (Last) Moment". The track is equally esoteric as it is atmospheric in the tradition of the label's new sound and perfect for drifting. The woozy, journey like aesthetic is only intensified by Georgia Lewis' hypnotising vocal efforts. On the lip we've got added dance floor drama and cerebral stimulus courtesy of the master himself Robag Wruhme; who as always turns in an emotive and bittersweet epic on "In The (Last) Moment (Robag Ponk Pramen NB remix)" complete with his trademarks: glitchy sound design, beautiful string arrangements and the usual Midas touch for pure deepness.

Review: A four track vinyl sampler of the new compilation series from Crosstown Rebels, Label founder Damian Lazarus introduces us to Spirits. He has compiled what he describes as 'a fresh psychedelic journey into the mind', aiming to bring together a collection of new artists from both his imprints. Gruuv head honchos from Leeds Audiojack deliver the goods (as always!) on the rolling tribal tech house of "Reverie", while Bristolian rising star Dubspeeka serves up a slow-burning and hypnotic journey aimed at the mind (as much as it is for the feet!) on "Lyssa". On the flip, Belgian duo Raw District team up with the amazing Alice Rose on vocals for the Afro inspired rain dance that is "Another Way" while Berlin's Jannis Siopis delivers something a bit more powerful to lead into the peak time on the druggy and strobe-lit darkroom dub of "Be Mine" featuring Elbee Bad.
