Constructive Ambiguity
Cat: CRM 240. Rel: 10 Sep 20
Drum And Bass/Jungle
  1. Constructive Ambiguity (12:07)
  2. Tree Of Life (10:56)
Review: The Bristol scientist returns! After a smattering of outings on the likes of Doc Scott's 31, one of drum & bass music's most important and influential boundary-breakers is about to drop his first album in 14 years... The Edge Of Everything drops on Crosstown Rebels in November, and here's the first teaser: 'Constructive Ambiguity', a cinematic 12 minute opus, it groans and yearns with a solemn musicality before eventually exploding in a two-step tear-out. 'Tree Of Life', meanwhile, is a much more militant piece of work with its hammering kicks, ominous drone and fearlessness. War music, pure and simple.

TEOE Remixes 2
Cat: CRM 245. Rel: 22 Dec 20
Drum And Bass/Jungle
  1. It's A Lot (Calibre remix) (5:49)
  2. Only God Can Tell (LCY remix) (6:14)
  3. 7 Known Truths (Flynn remix) (3:16)
Review: You could do a lot worse than this when trying to find an EP that hits its nail on the head of a British dance music scene in late-2020. Drum 'n' bass mogul Krust offering up his originals for a trilogy of remixes that represent a breadth of noises, not to mention some pretty strong emotions - from frustration and anxiety to reflection and rave-y love.

Starting with the latter, fellow 170-don Calibre delivers a typically soulful, warm, liquid cut that's always going to have broad appeal. Bass experimenter LCY does the opposite, all abrasive EBM sounds and intense, broken rhythms, with Flynn stepping in for the final part of the triptych - a classy slice of sparse and system-troubling dubstep. A very strong selection that's going to keep a variety heads interested.

Antigravity Love
Antigravity Love (double 12")
Cat: CRM 243. Rel: 23 Nov 20
Deep House
  1. Antigravity Love (Masters At Work remix) (9:46)
  2. Antigravity Love (Masters At Work instrumental dub) (9:38)
  3. Antigravity Love (KenLou dubb) (9:15)
  4. Antigravity Love (KenLou dubb instrumental) (6:17)
Review: The Krust album has been getting lots of people excited this year, and for good reason. The legendary producer has found some of his best form for Crosstown Rebels and now one its key tracks get some big remix treatment. Masters At Work step up to flip 'Antigravity Love' into one of their famously warm, deep, colourful house grooves with darting bass and soulful vocals. After an instrumental mix, the pair assume their KenLou alias for a bottomless dub version that has skip in the kicks and real bend in the bass.

Flourish (translucent red vinyl 2xLP)

Deep House
  1. Beth (2:27)
  2. Dark Heaven Light (4:45)
  3. Holy (8:01)
  4. Leave (6:56)
  5. Mountain (4:51)
  6. Everybody (6:14)
  7. Bas (1:19)
  8. Into The Sun (with Jem Cooke) (6:19)
  9. Wild Is Love (5:08)
  10. Form & Void (5:23)
Review: Over the last few years, Damian Lazarus' albums, made in cahoots with the ever-changing Ancient Moons collective, have got progressively more exotic and infused with all manner of global sounds and rhythms. You can still hear some of those haunting and otherworldly sounds (think drifting vocals, plucked Middle Eastern strings, hazy chords etc) on his new solo album, Flourish, though this time they act as musical toppings for a range of smooth tech-house, breakbeat and electro grooves. It's a successful musical fusion that will certainly appeal to the Crosstown Rebels founder's many fans, with highlights including recent single 'Mountain', surprise ambient cut 'Bas' and picturesque vocal number 'Into the Sun' (with sometime Hot Since 82 and CamelPhat collaborator Jem Cooke).

Heart Of Sky
Cat: 405053 8381931. Rel: 20 Jul 18
Deep House
  1. All I Need To Get High
  2. Spirals
  3. I Found You
  4. Five Moons
  5. Eli Eli
  6. Fly Away
  7. Lost Myself
  8. Feedback Loop
  9. Help Me Find A Way
  10. Cancello
  11. Tomorrow We Can Start Again
Review: On this second album from his Ancient Moons project, Damian Lazarus has decided to switch focus. Whereas the outfit's debut album, Message From The Other World, combined global music influences with Lazarus's usual tech-house rhythms and a touch of psychedelia, Heart of Sky is much more heavily influenced by the Crosstown Rebels' chief's rarely discussed soul boy roots. Of course, the beats and basslines still largely stick to the powder house script, it's just that this time they come accompanied by starry-eyed soul vocals, 1960s dream pop influences, bold piano flourishes, gospel choruses and, on rare occasions, smoky trip-hop aesthetics. As a result, it's undoubtedly a much more "human" album, and one with far more crossover potential than its predecessor.
