Review: Like many leftfield-minded musicians, sometime Black Dice man Eric Copeland is no work-shy loafer. Joke In The Hole may be his first album for NYC behemoths DFA, but it's his sixth since 2008. It may also be his most accessible set to date. While inventive, cacophonous and admirably loose, it eschews guitars and gritty fuzz for skewed dancefloor rhythms, junkyard percussion and all manner of playful melodies. Sure, there are wonky, bourbon-addled chuggers - see the druggy "A Little Tit" and dizzy found-sound beatdown of "Shoo Rah" - but they generally play second fiddle to the album's more upbeat moments. Of these, the warped leftfield boogie of "Cheap Treat" and dub-funk pulse of "Tinkerbell" stand out.

Review: Despite his self-proclaimed hatred of nightclubs, Sheffield misery-guts Richard "Crooked Man" Barratt is rather good at making dance music. That's not to say that the former Sweet Exorcist and All Seeing I man's second album, "Crooked House", is a riotous romp full of wonky, low-slung, industrial-tinged house and techno slammers, though. While rooted in Yorkshire's traditionally raw, alien, bleep-laden and bass-heavy take on those styles, the album's genius lies in Barratt's ability to write surprisingly soulful, off-kilter songs, co-produced by fellow veterans Mick Ward and David Lewin, and voiced by some seriously talented singers (Amy Douglas and Pete Simpson included). The results are undeniably magical, with "Here On Earth", "Walls", "Take It All Away", "Every Killer Needs a Friend" and trippy "Echo Loves Narcissus" amongst the highlights.

Review: DFA present the DJ edition of Discodeine's superlative collaboration with brandy snap-esque Pulp front man Jarvis Cocker, with a collector's edition 10 inch from Gallic types DIRTY to follow shortly adorned in limited edition spectral art. Much like Bot'ox impressed last year with the short but sweet "Blue Steel", this heavily orchestral disco thump of "Synchronize" is that rare beast: a slice of electronic bliss that, thanks to the vocal involvement of Cocker, could feasibly trouble the dominance of Cowell and co in the pop charts as well as work wonderment on the more discerning dancefloors. Hopefully the forthcoming Discodeine album, set for release in the first few weeks of next year will provide more of the same! The accompanying clutch of remixes from Jam Factory present yet more evidence of the Disco Bloodbath empire growing with ominous ease, as Dan Beaumont and Ben Rymer deliver a pitch perfect example of stripped back warehouse throb that has no doubt been road tested to great effect at the legendary monthly parties.

Review: Back in 2009, DJ Kaos surfaced on DFA with "Love The Night Away" with an accompanying remix from Swedes Tiedye that has become a classic in the modern disco canon. Now the boss of the Jolly Jams imprint, Kaos makes an overdue return to DFA with "From Inside", a resplendent cosmic jam that references his krautrock forebearers whilst retaining a modern disco lilt. Featuring a decidedly Hot Chip style vocal contribution from the producer himself, "From Inside" begins with rich synth detail and accrues ever more as it progresses. Tiago, a Portuguese producer par excellence, further proves his worth to the disco game with two remixes on the flip, both filled to the brim with analogue detail and percussive vim - though it's the Club Dub where Tiago is allowed the space to fully shine.

Review: Kick-starting 2016 with style, cult NYC label DFA call upon Montreal-based duo Essaie Pas to deliver an LP of pure sonic vibrations and soothing meditation. The title track itself, "Demain Est Une Autre Nuit", is a definite stand-out thanks to its dreary, lonesome pool of harmonies, but the album develops a more concrete shape with tunes like "Retox" or "Le Port Du Masque Est De Rigeur", both classic coldwave cuts with a nod to electro. Our favourite on here is definitely "Facing The Music", though, an ominous crescendo of hollow bass and dread that falls neatly into the EBM-style techno of "Lights out".

Review: It would be fair to say that Montreal duo Essaie Pas don't have a particularly positive view of our planet. "Earth, what a shithole," they moodily grumble on the title track from their latest EP on DFA, their first since the release of last year's "New Path" LP. The cut itself is perhaps not quite as dark as you'd expect, with its throbbing, dark Italo-style arpeggio bass and crunchy drum hits being peppered with sharp, trance style synthesizer motifs, bubbly electronic riffs and female vocals that add an extra frisson of positivity. Italian scene stalwart Marco Passarani delivers a flipside interpretation that brilliantly re-casts the cut as a Bobby Orlando style mid-1980s Hi-NRG club cut, while bonus track "Corps Etranger" is a pleasingly sparse, bubbly and alien-sounding chunk of intergalactic electro.

Review: Since the departure of Dominic Butler, Factory Floor's Gabriel Gurnsy and Nik Colk Void has consciously moved away from the Throbbing Gristle/Cabaret Voltaire inspired sound with which they made their name. On 25 25, their third full length, they continue this voyage. While there are occasional reminders of their industrial roots dotted throughout the album, the most obvious influences this time round are acid house and no-nonsense European techno. Their tracks have always been subtly shifting, full-throttle, groove-based affairs, of course, but this time round they seem more intent on sound-tracking breathless, 4am dancefloor moments, rather than showcasing their arty, experimental roots. That all of the eight tracks bang hard is a given.

Review: The DFA love for the work of Peter Gordon was first made public when James Murphy and Pat Mahoney chose to open and close their Fabric mix with the deliciousness of "Beginning of the Heartbreak" and "Don't Don't". That love is expanded on fully with this brilliant retrospective of the avant garde musician's career as a producer and figurehead of the Love of Life Orchestra. The aforementioned two tracks open this album and still amaze with the sheer magnitude of production values though the swift changeup between tracks will always annoy! From here, your senses are treated to a dizzying array of vintage disco sounds from the era's prime. Especially delightful are "Still You" and "Beautiful Dreamer" the tracks Gordon produced with visual artist Collette as Justine & The Victorian Punks. Ethereal and multi layered discoid arrangements and sweet vocal melodies combine to hypnotic effect on both tracks. Elsewhere "Iago's Escape" contains the sort of abstract arrangements you'd expect from a producer who worked with Arthur Russell whilst "Extended Niceties" contains a joyous exchange between sax and synths. This is one of those albums you sink right in to and come out the other side with a nagging sensation to find out more.

Review: The DFA debut of longstanding member Jayson Green also signals the revival of the classic DFA twelve-inch format, so you might playfully suggest it stands for Dying Formats Always. Jay has lent his vocals to various bands such as Panthers, Violent Bullshit, Cheeseburger, and the renowned hardcore group Orchid, always showcasing his wit and humor without veering into cynicism. Assuming a bandleader role, he presents a classic A-side here with the low slung funk of 'Local Jerk,' which was recorded during a lively party. It has tight disco drums, resounding claps and a groove-inducing bassline with big horns. On the B-side, 'I Need Love' unfolds as a darkly humorous nightlife satire.

Review: It Get's Dark sees Holy Ghost return to DFA in hand stamped limited 12" form, offering the first glimpse at how they're shaping up for their second - as yet untitled - LP which is due out on the NYC label in 2013. Given the love for their long delayed eponymous debut from last year, fans will be happy to see the Brooklyn based duo of Alex Frankel and Nick Millhiser haven't deviated far from the pop flecked disco template on "It Get's Dark", which is as strong a track as their breakthrough hit "Hold On", though naturally darker in tone, and features some harmonic backing that wouldn't seem out of place on a vintage Pet Shop Boys track.

Review: The long-awaited second album from Brooklyn indie-dance darlings Holy Ghost!, Dynamics shows the band at their most nagging, hooky and vibrant. As hinted by the summer's most surprising sing-along success "Dumb Disco Ideas", each track is perfectly crafted pop that teeters somewhere between Squeeze and Hot Chip. Highlights include the bold 80s synth hymn "It Must Be The Weather", the weeping guitars and yearning vocals of the Simple Minds-esque "Don't Look Down" and the undiluted synth pop Pet Shop Boys majesty of the finale "Cheap Shots". Perfectly polished and instantly infectious, Holy Ghost! have written an exciting new chapter and it's well worth a read.

Review: Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel go from strength to strength, cruising their 18-wheeler disco wagon into the future without so much as a nudge on the brake pedal. "Dumb Disco Ideas" hits you straight in the face like a WhoMadeWho record produced by Tom Moulton. Hooky, pumping and precision produced, it's got 'sound of the summer' stamped all over it. It also comes complete with an insane video if you've got time for some visual titillation. There's nothing dumb about this at all.
