Review: Carsten Jost is the DJ and Producer alias of David Lieske, co-founder of Dial Records. His latest collection of functional, ultra-utilitarian techno tracks here is essentially a slew of music for Moon exploration. Peaceful, raw and wonky techno tunes with a blue temperament are firmly arranged across 10 portions of wax; all carry the comparative sense of having less gravity weighing them down than techno made on Earth; it's techno made at 1.62 m/s² compared to our 9.807. Standouts include the alien voice cameos on 'IV' and the subterranean cave excursion that is 'VII'.

Review: German label Dial was probably not the most obvious choice for DJ Richard to release his debut album on, but it turns out that Grind is a perfect fit. Tracks like "No Balance" and "Waiting for the Green Flash" are eerie, atmospheric compositions and capture the often times sangfroid sound (and design) of the Hamburg imprint. Elsewhere, there are nods to the classic deep house and techno, especially on the winding, stop-start bleep groove of "Savage Coast" and the fragile, sublime melodies of closing track "Vampire (dub)". However, if there is one track that really consolidates the Dial-DJ Richard relationship, it's the staccato beats and sonorous bass of "I-Mir", an arrangement that perfectly captures the label's wintry escape from the daily grind.

Review: Rhode Island young gun turned Berlin success story DJ Richard has come a long way. After the success of his White Material label (known for its dusty and dirty house workouts) he's snapped up by Hamburg institution Dial for a full length album, and it does not at all disappoint. Grind is an inspired journey through Richard's many musical dimensions, showing off some sides to his sound not heard previously. After the black metal inspired intro of "No Balance" he gives us the smooth and majestic deep house of "Nighthawk" and "Savage Coast" that are more typical of the Dial sound but there's also the dark atmosphere of "I-Mir" and the brilliant "Vampire Dub".

Review: Dial Records are really on a roll these days. After recently releasing a beautiful album by Pawel and their remarkable 10 year anniversary compilation, they come back at us with the long awaited second album from Efdemin, Chicago. Berlin-based Efdemin (aka Phillip Sollmann) has been associated with the Hamburg-founded label since its inception a decade ago. His self-titled debut in 2007 was a stunning affair that resonated deeply with both the house and techno communities. After three years and several singles in between, Efdemin has finally graced us once again with nine new soul-striking tracks that combine the beauty and deepness we have come to associate with his productions. "Cowbell" starts things off with a vocal snippet, warbled organs and slow drum rolls as a prelude to "Shoeshine" which kicks things into higher gear with its tough drums and precise high-hats. All tracks seamlessly flow into each other, a concept many artists tend to overlook when making a full length album. This overall sense of flow makes it pleasure to listen to uninterrupted. Instead of finely balancing the line between house and techno, Chicago has more of a jazz-induced feeling to it- which is not to say that it's light or too refined, but rather more intriguing and textured than your standard fare of straight up deep house or deep techno. Oh, and there's even a Homer Simpson sample hidden in there.

Review: The diverse musical tastes of Phillip Solman are evident once again on this second round of remixes tied to his fine 2014 album Decay. There is something for all fans of contemporary techno here as ERP (aka Gerard Hanson), Don Williams, Johannes Volk and Traumprinz all contribute to proceedings. Typically the ERP revision of "Decay" recasts the album's title track as rough, bouncing electro whilst Mojuba boss Don Williams flushes "Track 93" with new levels of Motor City indebted urgency over a throbbing low end bass groove. On the flip Mr Volk turns in a fine melodic tweak of "Parallaxis" though it's fairly overshadowed by the epic orchestral rendition from Giegling artist Traumprinz.

Review: Released earlier this year, Efdemin's third studio album Decay will probably end up in a fair few end of year lists come December thanks to ten tracks that mixed up the poignant, introverted house Phillip Solman is know for with a few stylistic curveballs. Obviously aware of this, Dial have elected to complement the album with a series of remix 12"s and the first features quite a diverse selection of contributors indeed. Livity Sound's Asusu mans the A Side with a wonderfully minimalist take of "Some Kind Of Up And Down Yes" with the original's alien qualities smudged into something surprisingly understated and atmospheric. By contrast Steffan Linzatti goes the opposite route with his remix of "Solaris", embellishing the fluttering Martian textures with the results akin to Jeff Mills' Something In The Sky series. A closing remix from Efdemin's studiomate John Gurtler (a.k.a. The Borderline State) sees "Parallaxis" shorn of it's rhythmic backbone and replaced with acoustic instrumentation which Dial describe quite aptly as a "convergence of minimalist composers Moondog and Wim Mertens".

At times it sounds like Flugel's take on early Orbital, at others more like a typically Teutonic fusion of Detroit futurism and Plone-ish synthscapes. Review: It promises to be yet another interesting year for Dial Records with an upcoming compilation and the tantalising prospect of a debut album from White Material man DJ Richard on the horizon. Before that, it's Herr Flugel that kicks proceedings off with a new three track 12" that sounds and feels every bit as vibrant as this stellar 2014 LP Happiness Is Happening. Sliced Africa opens with "Black Towers" a racketing slab of epic deepness that appears suited to the early morning moments, whilst the title track has our Roman veering off into more tropical territory. Some superb drum programming on this one. To close "Spiritual Enhancer" adopts a more contemplative poise, easing down the tempo and providing the warm up DJs with a B Side gem to cherish.

Review: Carsten Jost hits us up on the deeeeeeeep tip here with 2 versions of a track called Atlantis, released on Dial. Atlantis 1 is on heavy on the bassline and very easy on the chords. Very deep, very pretty. On the flip, things get even deeper with a softer kick, and a slightly jazzier bassline.

Review: While he does have an excuse - after all, co-running the Dial imprint must be a near full time job - 16 years is long time to wait for a new Carsten Jost album. Happily, this long-promised follow-up to 2001's You Don't Need A Weatherman To Know Which Way The Wind Blows is really rather good. It contains a mixture of now vintage material - another airing for sublime 2007 double A-side "Atlantis" and "Atlantis II" - and brand new cuts. Musically, it's hugely atmospheric and otherworldly, subtly slipping between ambient soundscapes, hushed techno workouts, spacey, dub-wise explorations, and quietly melodic deep house. In other words, it was definitely worth waiting for.

Review: 2000 saw the birth of Dial Records, a label once beautifully described as releasing "techno for flowers". Their dark, atmospheric beats tinged with ethereal orchestration and sophisticated musicality have won the label a dedicated following that continues to grow to this day. Label founders Carsten Jost and Lawrence have frequented the label over the years and for their sixtieth release, ' Greater Administration Of The Lower Interests is unveiled as an EP teaser for their upcoming album. From Jost, "Chateau Jalouise" blends a beautifully sparse percussive base with delicate piano chords, sporadic tambourine rushes and little else; electronic simplicity fused with classical emotion. On the flip "The Swan" from Lawrence opts for tight stabby keys set amidst delicate sweeping string beds and a rolling rhythm section. Jazzy, deep and bragging sophistication by the bucket load, the upcoming album looks set to be nothing short of genius.

Review: Dial's All compilation, a CD which surfaced this spring, featured fifteen tracks from vintage label goers such as Lawrence, Pawel and John Roberts, but also newer names like White Material's DJ Richard, James K and Queens. The vinyl version has been naturally split into different releases, and we're on number 2 now, a second slab of wax that features five of the compilation's originals. First up is label boss Carsten Jost with the deep, luscious and dreamy house beats of "My Confession", followed by RNDM's "Summer Smile", an intricate little banger for the warm up hours. The flipside sees Physical Therapy's jungle-filtered "Market Crash" take the spotlight - our favourite of the lot - the starry, cinematic chimes of "Paloma" by John Roberts, and the deep, stuttering delays of "S Lush" by James K. Wonderful.

Review: It's been quite a while since Lawrence has appeared on the Dial imprint he founded with Messrs Jost and Turner, and while he's not exactly been slacking with appearances on Mule, Pampa, Smallville and Dial offshoot Laid, it's nice to see the man known as Peter M. Kersten back on familiar territory with the Etoile Du Midi EP. Trademark Lawrence nuances are in restrained abundance across each of the three tracks here, such as the skipping, gloopy groove of the title track that playfully hints at concrete jack amidst the crystalline textures. Alongside this "Creator" sees Lawrence in a looser mood, drawing out increasingly hypnosis inducing circles of melody over a locked groove that gradually gets dominated by the shimmering clouds of chords that appear overhead.

Review: Having flirted with Mule across his last two album length excursions, Lawrence returns to the Dial label he founded with Carsten Jost for Films & Windows, the Hamburg producer's sixth studio album. Given how much finely sculpted deep house terrain Peter M. Kersten has covered on his previous five album it's not surprising to hear that Films & Windows is driven by a central concept. Ten tracks deep, Kersten's production was apparently motivated and "inspired by an endless number of screened movies and real-life films". It's open to interpretation how much this actually manifests itself in the end results, though Lawrence fans will delight in the rich melodic warmth apparent in tracks such as "In Patagonia" whilst "Lucifer" is a certified jam.
