Review: Animal Collective return with album number eight, their first for Domino. "Strawberry Jam" was recorded by Scott Colburn in Tucson, Arizona. It's an amazing record, which should finally mark some sort of crossover for them. It bears all of their unique and charming hallmarks but with vocals and melody much more to the foreground.

Review: One of Britain's best-loved and most accomplished pop-rock bands are back with another highly anticipated album. The Car is epic on every level with its adventurously designed tunes, lots of grand orchestration and plenty of easy-to-enjoy and enigmatic songs of love but also doubt. The Sheffield outfit's seventh long player was written by frontman Turner at his home in LA and mixes indie and psychedelic rock, baroque, glam and orchestral rock with production largely taken care of by frequent collaborator James Ford. The title is a nod to the fact that there are many references to cars throughout the lyrics.

Review: It's now been ten years since the world first became aware of Dev Hynes, yet through humble beginnings in Test Icicles and Lightspeed Champion, it seems very much like this last decade has been a journey in the direction of this moment. With 'Freetown Sound' he makes his mark firmly as a modern-day auteur whose co-ordinates can be found somewhere between the funk-pop midas touch of Prince and the firebrand iconoclasm of Kendrick Lamar. A dizzying array of styles can be found in the album's compelling meld of the personal and political, yet with as much melodic richness and musical invention to be found here as confrontational food-for-thought, this is a stridently modern and multi-faceted joy.

Review: There's no denying Domino know how to knock 'em down hard. Having already delivered long players from Cat Power, Bob Moses and Villagers just this year alone, they are now turning to Devonte Hynes who is no stranger to the label either. Negro Swan provides the London artist with his fourth studio album which in large draws from the lost souls of '90s pop. It's hard not to hear Michael Jackson, Phil Collins and R&B four pieces all at once in tracks like "Saint", and even "Charcoal Baby", while there's even suggestion of Will Powers' spoken charm in the words to "Family". More Contemporary touches of genre are there in the emotional, beat pop of tracks like "Chewing Gum" and "Nappy Wonder" without forgetting the tropes of neo soul in "Holy Will". A grand album wrapped up in the angel wings of Blood Orange's queer poetic.

Review: It's always nice when an album comes with a backstory so genuinely absurd it renders the project a surrealist work of art. Welcome to "I Made A Place", the first fresh material from Bonnie "Prince" Billy in time, dedicated to life's simple and most instinctive pleasures. Because in the face of real adversity overthinking is wasting time. So here's the yarn - Hawaii, January 2018, Will and Elsa, the creatives at work here, are in the midst of an artistic residency when a warning goes off about an impending missile attack. A song is written, "Blueberry Jam"; whimsical flight of fancy laughing in the face of impending Armageddon. Thankfully the "attack" was a false alarm, but it catalysed further work resulting in this album. Complex song craft and enchanting folk instrumentation rooted in what we feel when all is about to be lost.

Review: Is Anna Calvi one of the most vital artists currently working in music? Perhaps. Hyperbole aside, she's certainly consistent in terms of innovative ideas, and packs talent in abundance - her tracks are powerful, seductive, dark, mysterious and infinitely repeatable. Or re-playable.

With 'Hunted' she's at it again, opting to rework her celebrated 'Hunter' album into acoustic interpretations. Which doesn't sound particularly unique, until you learn she's invited a truly all-star cast of contemporary greats along for the ride, including Charlotte Gainsbourg, Julia Holter, Courtney Barnett and Joe 'IDLES' Talbot. With a cast like that you can bet your bottom dollar the finished product is going to be something very special indeed. Proof, if it were needed, that there's still much outsider attitude left in the world everything might not be quite so hopeless.

Review: Peaky Blinders is a saga that will live on in British cultural folklore long after people stop streaming the show itself. And the legacy of arguably the coolest show to come out of the UK in several years is as much to do with the contemporary stylisation of what's essentially a period piece as it is the attitude it exudes. An atmosphere that's distinctly British, to say the least. A key aspect of the overall impact is the soundtrack, and who better to craft the score to this dark, violent, socially-imbalanced, politically-volatile period in English gangster history than Anna Calvi. The high priestess of alternative, brooding, tense rock & roll plucked straight from the depths of surrealism, every pluck and chord seems to intensify the overall feeling, seducing us with a combination of breathy spoken word, operatic contralto, and tense virtuoso guitar playing.

Review: In 2022, Cat Power, otherwise known as singer/songwriter/producer Chan Marshall, fully recreated Bob Dylan's legendary 1966 show at the Royal Albert Hall. In turn, Dylan's 1966 concert was the culmination of one of the most consequential tours in the history of rock & roll - when he electrified his songs, and by doing so enraged his devoted audience, who just had to catch up. Power's recollection of Dylan's radical re-rendering, now pressed to vinyl, hears her perform the songs in the same order as Dylan himself that night: the first half of the show being an acoustic set, not long before being joined by her electric band for the second half.

Review: In November 2022, Cat Power took the stage at London’s Royal Albert Hall and delivered a song-for-song recreation of one of the most fabled and transformative live sets of all time. Held at the Manchester Free Trade Hall in May 1966 - but long known as the “Royal Albert Hall Concert” due to a mislabeled bootleg - the original performance saw Bob Dylan switching from acoustic to electric midway through the show, drawing ire from an audience of folk purists and forever altering the course of rock n' roll. In her own rendition of that historic night, the artist otherwise known as Chan Marshall inhabited each song with equal parts conviction and grace and a palpable sense of protectiveness, ultimately transposing the anarchic tension of Dylan’s set with a warm and luminous joy. Now captured on the live album Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert, Marshall’s spellbinding performance both lovingly honors her hero’s imprint on history and brings a stunning new vitality to many of his most revered songs.

Review: The ninth album by English folk singer Shirley Collins, Archangel Hill, comes as a collection of traditional songs from England, Ireland, Scotland and America. Collins breathes fresh, reanimatory, magic vocal dust into the songs, with her distinctively breathy voice once more imbuing a collective energy into the English folk revival styles of the 1960s and 1970s... and now, perhaps, the 2020s. It's her debut for Domino, who describe Collins as one of the most important voices in the folk revival scene. Naturally, this means Collins' selections reflect her deep knowledge of folk song, with some tracks like 'Hares On The Mountain' widely known among the public, while others are sourced from close personal friends and relatives.

Review: Supergroups that look perfect on paper can often misfire in practice, which makes it both a relief and a revelation that this meeting of minds between the Glaswegian dance-pop freaks and the legendary glam progenitors hits the spot so spectacularly. With both acts playing to their strengths, and sharing ideas in effusive fashion, FFS is a collection of indelible songs that never let their artful campery and arch histrionics triumph over melody and fresh invention. As over the top in its flamboyance as one would expect this collaboration to be, this inspired collision of circumstances has more than enough substance to match its style.

Review: Released back in 2003, Rounds was the third LP from Kieran Hebden as Four Tet and perhaps the first long player that widely established him as a pioneering voice within electronic music. Though it doesn't feel like a decade since it was released, Domino celebrate the album's tenth anniversary in requisite fashion here, reissuing it in double LP format and slipping in a CD of Four Tet performing live in Copenhagen in 2004. Listening back now, it's easy to understand why Rounds is viewed as an early classic in the Four Tet canon, transferring his love for free jazz records to a beat template that's more palatable on the ear (Fact pickers might want to know that Hebden recently revealed to Pitchfork the LP was made entirely from samples) "She Moves She" still sounds absolutely haunting too!

From early singalong hits 'Take Me Out' and 'Darts Of Pleasure' weighing up against more recent fare, it's the perfect testament to one of the best bands to come out of Scotland in the 21st century, pressed up on red wax and with a 16-page booklet charting the band's story from back then to right now.

Review: Few bands capture the mood of the millennial indie explosion like Franz Ferdinand. The plucky Scots pitched their sound perfectly between the spiky post-punk of Gang Of Four and the dancefloor-friendly pop hooks of Talking Heads. Then all it took was one monster hit single, 'Take Me Out', and their victory was assured. 20 years on their self-titled debut hasn't dulled one bit and so Domino are celebrating with a limited black and orange swirl vinyl pressing presented in a very tasteful embossed sleeve as sharply dressed as the band themselves.

Review: Even in the early days of Portishead it was apparent Beth Gibbons wouldn't just play the game and become an omnipresent star trotting out an album a year. Her reclusive nature adds to the enigma around her arresting voice, and it's allowed an album like 2002's Out Of Season to mature beautifully. It also means there's an undeniable thrill around the arrival of a new project, which takes shape here as Lives Outgrown. The lead single 'Floating On A Moment' sets the tone, sounding absolutely like the Gibbons we all know and love while heading into new territory, melding indie rock, folky romanticism and subtle sonic tweaks that assure us the wait has been worth it. This heavyweight vinyl addition comes with a booklet, as well as a download code.

Review: All hail the return of Beth Gibbons, following up on her first solo album no less than 21 years later. The Portishead singer has been patient in bestowing her gifts upon us, but each time we've been rewarded with a rare and singular music. Lives Outgrown promises to uphold the brilliance of her previous work, with intrigue sparked by the lilting, gently psychedelic lead single 'Floating On A Moment'. It's folky, gnarly and unabashedly beautiful, with her voice sounding utterly un-dulled by time. This particular edition is an indie-exclusive which includes the vinyl and booklet along with a bonus print - one for the collectors to jump on.

Review: Beth Gibbons releases her debut solo album Lives Outgrown. Notably containing ten songs that were in total written over the course of ten years, the overarching mood is one of saying farewell and musing on the bittersweetness of loss. The English singer and notable Portishead member's solo efforts often operate with this affect, but Gibbons' latest is of special import, given the length of time over which these songs were crafted and occasionally performed over the years. As demonstrated by lead track 'Floating On A Moment', the palette is soft and reflective, hitting only the softest dynamic notes, as Gibbons sings of unique lifetime journeys and a dealt-with sense of friends suffering being left behind.

Review: Five years ago, Portishead front woman Beth Gibbons joined forces with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra to perform Henryk Gorecki's "Symphony Number 3 (Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs)" at the National Opera Grand Theatre in Warsaw. Here, the recording of the concert is finally given a release. It's a stunning suite of classical pieces, with the orchestra making short work of Gorecki's swelling movements and deeply melancholic musical motifs. Gibbons is in particularly fine form, transforming herself into an operatic artist and accurately delivers the stunning, Polish-language pieces. It's an astonishing performance and nothing like we've ever heard from her before. The 24-minute opening track is, in particular, breathtaking.

Review: Julia Holter herself describes this new album as "the cacophony of the mind in a melting world," and it provides the American singer, songwriter with her first studio album since 2015's Have You In My Wilderness. Aviary is an intrigue to say the least and it's hard not to feel as if a horror-thematic runs throughout its 11 tracks, with moments of temporary insanity and distress intertwining with hair-raising spots a ghostly allure, and it's as if any lightness in the album has had to pass its way through a thicket of darkness first. There's much dissonance to be heard here too but in a pleasantly unsettling way akin to listening to an orchestra tune itself, and with all the deep and meaningful aspects behind Holter's inspirations, it's a hell of a ride.

Review: Julia Holter's sixth album, Something In The Room She Moves, is a dreamlike exploration of complexity and transformability, featuring flowing harmonic universes and fluid, water-like melodies. Her vocal register, reminiscent of Siouxsie Sioux, Nico, or Kate Bush, possesses a matchstick intensity, rekindling its own flame through the conversation in her voice. Holter's diaphragm shifts between instruments, creating a continuum of fretless electric bass pitches counterpointing with gliding vocal melodies. Glissing Yamaha CS-60 adds a touch of experimentalism, while her production choices and arrangements maintain a sense of simplicity and refinement. Holter's singing resonates in somatic frequencies, evoking a deep connection between mind and body. With its liquid, ever-changing nature, 'Something In The Room She Moves' invites listeners to immerse themselves in a world of sound that is both ethereal and profoundly human.

Review: Julia Holter's sixth album Something in the Room She Moves might just be the Los Angeles songwriter's best work. In the past she has often explored memory and dreamlike futures but on this new outing she is very much more in the moment throughout. She explains herself hat "There's a corporeal focus, inspired by the complexity and transformability of our bodies." Musically the album mixes fretless electric bass pitches with her unique vocal melodies. The recognisable sounds of the Yamaha CS-60 interweave with more organic wind instruments and add up to a fluid, watery sound that flows smooth and carries you along with it amongst the gorgeous harmonies.

Review: Jon Hopkins' fourth album Immunity is a bona fide classic that is now a full ten years old. To celebrate the milestone, it has been newly remastered for this special reissue. Listening back now reminds you just what a confident and adventurous record this was - a creative trip deep inside Hopkins' mind that brought totters everything he had done and learned up to that point. The focus was firmly on the dancefloor but still, the tracks come with plenty of emotional nuances, from sad piano motifs to stirring choral drones but shifting rhythms and real-world sound effects that brought the whole thing to life.

Review: At this stage in his career, Jon Hopkins should be able to do whatever the hell he likes. After proving his synaesthetic abilities throughout the 2010s - with masterpieces like 'Light Through The Veins' and his last album 'Singularity'- it's clear this climactic electronica artist knows no bounds. Now he debuts a new full guided meditation-style LP documenting his ketamine-fulled revelations realised in a remote Ecuadorian cave. Relinquishing beats and drum sounds, this is a fully ambient affair from Hopkins, and routinely features soothing, sampled vocal snippets from the late yogi and guru Baba Ram Daas, as well as collabs with producer and psychedelic ceremony guide East Forest.

Review: Having taken time out to travel the world and experience new things (including psychedelic substances in California), John Hopkins planned to make Singularity, his ninth album, "a sonic ecosystem that starts and ends on the same note". He soon got frustrated by these limitations, so instead just laid down a fluid and hazy album that combines his usual luscious, ambient electronics with a variety of sparse, heavy and off-kilter rhythms. While undeniably laidback in parts, the album also boasts a number of foreboding techno workouts and uses a wider palette of instrumental sounds than we've come to expect (including some fine strings and his own intricate piano playing). The resultant set is rather impressive, all told, and while not quite a "sonic ecosystem", it's certainly an enjoyable journey.

Review: Much has been made of Jon Hopkins' intentions with his new album Music For Psychedelic Therapy, but whether you're a devoted tripper or a sober psychonaut his new album has plenty to offer. Of course Hopkins has more than proved himself over the years as a phenomenal producer and composer, but here he's replaced his brooding cinematic techscapes for blissful ambience draped in rich overtones and gently drifting patterns of melody and rhythm. It's wholly invigorating and relaxing, clearly designed to soothe the listener in stark contrast to the shock and awe he normally inspires amongst his considerable fan base.

Review: Hot Chip jumped ship yet again, releasing their fifth studio album In Our Heads via the esteemed UK imprint Domino Recordings. The eleven track album was self produced by the band members (along with some behind the boards help from respected studio engineer/producer Mark Ralph) and recorded in London, presumably in the spare time between the various band members other musical commitments that include 2 Bears, New Build and About Group. It stands up alongside their previous long players, with certified pop gems littered among a heady mix of synthy electo and downtempo romantic jams such as the irrepressible "Look At Where We Are".

Eventually they took it as far as they could and then beyond. This album showcases their unique and definite blues and post-punk influences. Review: Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince - better known together as The Kills - present God Games, their latest ballad-rock opus for Domino Records. Composed off the back of a 100-dollar keyboard and in a makeshift studio nestled in an old church, God Games shoots squarely for a grandiose oeuvre, making use of stomping, brassy power pop motifs to evoke the sublime rapture of encountering god, whether that be in the raucous opening loom of 'New York' or the texturally gritty '103'. In an era where everyone plays god, and in which we all operate under the Nietzschean claim that god is dead, it seems The Kills could have the tools to light the way to a not-false idol.

Review: Sam Eastgate might have made his name via Late of the Pier, but he proved solo abilities and then some with 'Inju', his own debut. He's now back with 'GENE', which sees him take individuality to greater heights by way of inventing, creating and playing his own unique instrument, which lends its name to the album. Throwing guitar licks, soft pads and compressed keys into the mix, the result is a psychedelic electronic explosion of colour and texture, along the lines of Neon Indian. Low slung glitch and piercing falsetto vocals build into a delicate but definite funk grooves, 'Open My Eyes' has an almost operatic quality to its chorus, underpinned with a techno-esque growling low end, and 'Rubber Sky' could almost be another David Byrne and X-Press 2 collaboration. Strutting, sparkling, rolling and crunching its way through three acts of innocence increasingly lost, this is electronic pop at its most impressive.

Review: More than merely an awaybreak for its members Alex Turner and Miles Kane, The Last Shadow Puppets proved themselves on their debut 'Age Of The Understatement' to be masters of a distinctly '60s-styled world of glamour and arresting artifice, their clever wordplay and swooning harmonies combining with ornate arrangements to create a sound as redolent of black-and-white kitchen sink dramas as the trials and tribulations of the twenty-first century everyday. This long-awaited sequel, meanwhile - reuniting them with string arranger Owen Pallett - displays that whereas their careers may have moved in markedly different directions in the interim, their wry and wordily ditties when united display an enviable chemistry and magnetic charm.

Review: First arriving in 1988, the debut album from My Bloody Valentine really is deserving of re-appraisal and reissue, albeit most musos out there won't have exactly forgotten it existed in the first place. Still, there are a whole lot of ears out there that were born too late and may not have discovered its wonders yet simply because they have far too much back catalogue greatness to unearth, and so this is a great opportunity to get stuck in, for want of better words.

The Irish dream pop and shoegaze pioneers do get pretty loud at times, but overall this is noise being used in a very different way to the vast majority of guitar styles before or since. Hence the record stunning critics of the day, with the sorely-missed Q magazine perhaps publishing the most apt description, from the mind of one Stuart Maconie: "The first full-length expression of this remarkable new sound: gossamer vocals and insinuating melodies glimpsed through sheets of blurred, opaque noise."

If you're reading this, you will already known that the band which is made up of Bilinda Butcher, Kevin Shields, Deb Googe and Colm o Ciosoig are quote possibly one of the most influential groups of the last four decades. Their second album Loveless came in 1991 and took big leaps forward from their debut in 1988. It's an album that still overwhelms your sense even today.

Review: As part of a new looking back on German art rocker Nico's esteemed career by the indie label Domino, Desertshore chronologically follows The Marble Index, and is her third album, following the prior project's establishing her as an avant-garde artist with one foot in the mainstream, in stark defiance of the the prejudiced poo-poohs that followed her first (baroque pop) album, Chelsea Girl. Desertshore is more of a reconciliation of her prior two projects, bringing back the initial western pop sensibility while now firmly basking in a newfound weirdness-and-she-knows-it. From the opening dark waves of 'Janitor Of Lunacy' to the piano-balladic injection of sadness that is 'Afraid', this is another avant-garde masterpiece by the musician, never justifiably passed over.

Review: Nico's Marble Index was the first album to establish the German musician's home in the avant-garde; the story of the fashion model turned "legitimate" artist is as old as time, yet is rarely told today. In contrast to her first album, Chelsea Girl, which consisted almost entirely of pop chansons, Nico's sophomore LP here tracks nicely with her working introduction to John Cale in his harmonium era, drawing inspiration primarily from modern European classical music, not three-minute hookcraft. Long out of print, this slow-burner of a critical classic now hears a worthy reissue via Domino.

Review: Person Pitch is the third solo album from Animal Collective member Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), originally released in 2007. With a much greater emphasis on electronic instruments and effects, the album is a departure from Animal Collective or Panda Bear's usual sounds, reappropriating styles such as cabaret and Americana through reams of reverb. The result on tracks like 'I'm Not' and 'Good Girl' is a style that has rarely been reinvented, daring to eschew comprehensibility or dryness for a psychedelic sound plunged in echo, and dealing in themes of fatherhood, travel sickness, and marriage.

But the Panda Bear alias itself is nowadays of almost equal stature, similarly blending psychedelia, folk, electronic and ambient influences for further, less-restrained takes on the sound. Here on 'Reset In Dub', Lennox reunites with Peter Kember - a former member of the influential space rock band Spacemen 3 - and legendary dub producer Adrian Sherwood. In dubwise style, Sherwood comes through to remix all nine tracks on Lennox and Kember's prior collaborative LP Reset, amounting to a multi-layered, adventurous retake.

Real Estate's sixth full-length album Daniel was recorded in an ebullient nine-day spree at RCA Studio A, in Nashville with GRAMMY-winning producer and songwriter Daniel Tashian (Kacey Musgraves). In 11 compulsively tuneful songs, they connect the uninhibited wonder of their earliest work with the earned perspective of adulthood. Several days into recording, all five members of Real Estate were discussing album titles when someone suggested Danielmsimply because it seemed funny to bestow a human name upon a record. Was it for Daniel Tashian? Maybe. Was it a nod to The Replacements' Tim? Possibly. Was it the sign of a band that has now been around long enough to take its music seriously without taking itself or its perception too seriously? Absolutely.

Dare we say it, there's splashes of Happy Mondays, Stone Roses and The Jesus & Mary Chain in his music too, however there is no denying Bill Ryder Jones originality, and the washy, distorted and melancholic tones and timbres of this album revel in a tear-jerking, emotional lustre.

Review: Ryder-Jones is something of a Liverpudlian legend, a troubadour who originally made his name with The Coral, yet one whose charismatic talents have extended beyond the '60s-worship of his origins to a very personal place on this, his third solo album to date. Recorded in the bedroom of his childhood home, 'West Kirkby County Primary' is a work of heartache, loneliness and melancholia that finds its metier somewhere between the work of Michael Head and Springsteen's 'Nebraska' - Ryder-Jones' mood may be desolate, soul-searching and reflective, yet his songwriting flair lurks behind every corner.

Now behold the difficult second, which blows all of that which came before out of the water, and manages to straddle accessibility and experimentation with aplomb. Dedicated to heartbreak, Anywhere But Here is nothing if not massively varied, like the moods we experience when that essential organ is ripped from our chests and trodden on by someone we thought was protecting it. We have trip hop and angsty post-rock, driving guitar garage, curiously jaunty-yet-depressed bluesy bits, and grungy pop. In a word: exceptional.

Review: Following up her last spate of albums, Colourgrade and Highgrade, South London vocalist and musician Tirzah adds to her streak of successes with Trip9love...???, a comparatively glossier update to her sound. Produced in collaboration with her longtime friend, collaborator and composer Mica Levi, the album recalls the melancholic, piano-driven r&b and beats formula that ensured the success of her debut album Devotion. But there's a rougher, more phased-out extension to her sound here, with more emphasis and effects placed on Tirzah's vocals, and a production gamut that more recalls the early-2010s weightless 'wave' productions of Mr. Mitch or Mssingno. An icy, elusive addition to Tirzah's catalogue, sure to take the South London contingent in particular by storm.

The duo hit a note between the brooding post punk and new wave romanticism and a spikier pop streak which should find them winning hearts and minds all over festival season. Review: Whoever wrote the release notes to Matthew E White's long-awaited return to the release schedule, take a bow. "Retro-futurist magic tricks," they say about his music. While the wording is abstract enough to border on nonsense, we're struggling to think of a better way to describe K Bay. It's constantly switching things up on you, producing one white rabbit from a black hat after another. Even expecting the unexpected can't save you from being consistently (and pleasantly) surprised.

Throughout the course of the record you'll find epic string balladry, 1980s pop, disco, funk, dad rock, acoustic guitar work, and marching band oddities. It's a varied celebration that truly summarises the musical era we are living in - best described simply as post modern. An age when the rules no longer apply because the charts are no longer relevant, leaving artists free to explore their creative ideas to the nth degree.

Review: Robert Wyatt is one of those artists you can't help but find fascinating, having overseen some seismic shifts in the UK music scene since emerging in the mid-1960s as a kit drummer for Soft Machine and member of fellow Canterbury prog rockers Matching Mole. Over the years he has given us some incredible art-pop jazz stuff, helping lay at least some of the necessary groundwork for lo-fi soul and electronica, slowly becoming something of a mythical legend in his own right.

His Greatest Misses is a great way to familiarise yourself with the musical story, if all that was news to you. Contrary to the title's suggestion, not everything here flew under the radar when it was first released. His incredible, hypnotic interpretation of 'I'm A Believer' by The Monkees is one, the other is 'Shipbuilding', written for Wyatt by Elvis Costello and Clive Langer. Details aside, this is more than an anthology - it's a presentation on why the artist demands such respect among peers and public alike.
