Review: Emotional Rescue is delighted to present the first of two EPs from British '80s band Furniture, starting with their much sought-after, six-song "mini-album" - as they were known then - which has recently been rediscovered by a new generation of DJs and collectors.

"Transatlantic Cable" compares the cliches of a certain type of American romance - Bogart, Sinatra, Dean - to the reality of life in West London. "They're On Me" is probably one of very few pop songs to feature double bass and the word "newsagent", while "Robert Nightman's Story" is powered by a riff on marimba and abrasive rhythm guitar.

"I Miss You", a torch song so good you'd think Julie London might have cut it. A highlight for many is "Why Are We In Love". This track is a key reason for the revival of interest in the band, with pattering rhythm part and the sweet clarinet melody, creating an atmosphere that has attracted a following among discerning DJs. "A Letter To Myself" introduced the band's new, expanded line-up adding Sally Still (bass, vocals) and Maya Gilder (keyboards), which would endure until the band stopped in 1990.

Review: Emotional Rescue returns to the music of British "pop" band Furniture, with an EP of the band's own extended versions, remixes and unreleased takes of their particular output.

Taken from three 12"s that followed When The Boom Was On (ERC072), the songs included cast a light on their development from 3 to 5 piece, adding Sally Still (bass) and Maya Gilder (keyboards) and the new male/female frontline. The subsequent broadening of their line-up and sound meant they could start to address the kind of pop music they wanted to play.

After the early releases garneered radio play and reviews, Furniture were launched into the melee of '80s pop. An anomaly, the band found they attracted a specific kind of "intense" follower, who were often beguiled by Furniture's freaky normality. This was addressed on the 1984 release, 'I Can't Crack'. A more urgent version of the sound Furniture had debuted with 'Why Are We In Love', the track, sung by Tim, was based around a sequencer-like rhythm played live by drummer Hamilton Lee, and a clarinet part played by Tim's brother, Larry Whelan. A mix of bleakness and euphoria, the song was and is a favourite of the band and considered one of their best self-productions, as well as becoming a latter day club play.

This is followed by the studio experiment 'Throw Away The Script', where the band wrestled with sequencers and synth-pop, but then countered it with a free-jazz sax solo. Found on the flip of the double A -side of 'Love Your Shoes' 12", this instrumental version too became an underground club hit, including a cult play at Fran Lenaer's influential Valencia club, Spook Factory. Played loud, the studio mastery, trickery and oft-accidental discoveries come to the fore, with tissue-damaging frequencies giving extra sound system shaking bottom end.

The B-side continues the band's love of making extended mixes with 'Dancing The Hard Bargain'. Co-produced with Tim Parry (formerly of Blue Zoo), they threw everything at these 12" versions. Able to relax and focus on the sounds they really liked, rather than the ones thought more commercial, this can be clearly heard on this compelling, percussive mix, a stop-start breakdown becoming a band hallmark.
To close this collection is the mammoth 'Bullet'. Again sung by Whelan, an edited version of which debuted on the 1986 Survival compilation of Furniture tracks called 'The Lovemongers', here this previously unreleased original take is centred on a mesmeric tape loop, live drums and a guest appearance by violinist Helena Bjorelius.

Review: Emotional Rescue starts a non-defined set of reissues where some of the label's favourite artists have lesser known, but (cult) classic songs unearthed, remastered, reappraised and then reinterpreted by contemporary producers and fans, for today's DJs and collectors alike.

To start, the idea of the legendary British psychedelic band Hawkwind appearing on the label might come as a surprise, but when the nature of songs and remixer involved is explored it makes perfect sense.

Following the departure of Lemmy to the Motorhead hinterlands, the band's sound took a wider but more defined style, including their burgeoning interest in electronics. With that, the 1976 album Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music contained a song that has become a secret spin for the more leftfield and adventurous. The Aubergine That Ate Rangoon - itself referencing cult psychedelic band Dr. West's Medicine Show and Junk Band's alien invasion opus The Eggplant That Ate Chicago - with it's use of loops, synthesiser and motorik drumming is a short instrumental that has gained cult status in its own way. Focusing on much of Hawkwind's musicality in one song, mixing psychedelia, fusion and humour with a killer groove, all in one short blast of repetition meets experimentation.

This is backed with the album's other stand out, in the beautifully laidback stoner vibrations of City Of Lagoons. Lanquidity rules as West Coast meets Floyd touches abound. A hazy Gilmour style guitar and heavy phasing and reverb drums underpin space rock key solos that carry you to the horizon.

An Esteemed excavator, musician, compiler and oracle, the choice of Cherrystones to rework these instrumentals is a given. With two decades of production chops from beats, breaks and jazz for the likes of Stark Reality, Twisted Nerve and Brutal Music to the abstract, psychedelic acoustics for Whatever We Want Records, he has gone on to become a respected composer of soundtracks for Adidas, Stone Island and YMC.

His heavy retake of The Aubergine pulls up the drum and bass and overlays freeform synth stabs atop a warped Riley arpeggio loop that takes the smoke hazed original and give it doses of codeine and rum. To close, his City Of Lagoons rework becomes 'Head' outtake overkill. Trippin' beyond the light fantastic.

"When the prolific and albeit consistent Emotional Rescue label & head honcho Maestro Chuggy proposed this as a potential project to me I was initially excited as much as honoured, but also hesitant. Why you ask? Because that which is to the heart is often the most sacred and foreboding to envisage or should I say take out of context or possibly leave in context via sympathetic realisation.

My history with Hawkwind is as murky as anyone that truly let the band into their hallowed cerebral bandwidth whilst following their smoke signals and oily pipes serenading the riff fuelled synth washed sunsets where dogs on strings jugglers tents and paratrooper boots were standard issue on stage and backstage. This is more than a mere band, these wrote the book on themselves, used pages to roll with and smoked their own scriptures and blew smoke rings that became parables with no care to any place scene or need to fit within or out.

This entire project was created using no stems, no multi tracks hence we did not use remix as a theme, these are re-works which I made via intense hacking at open sections in the songs whilst manipulating and treating those hard. The only parts added were the synth I played, added and re -chopped with a view to colour these re-imaginations. It was essentially making a new meal from the existing but adding and subtracting flavours to create a new
Essence, a new sensation and believe it, it was not easy which kept it exciting and close to me. By no means am I metaphorically adding a moustache to the Mona Lisa, I'm more to the point tickling her or poking my tongue out with a view to get a response or smile. Hurry on sundown so I can see your shadows dancing in the grassy lucid light.

Review: Forever faithfully mining the past to keep your shelves stocked with gems that might have otherwise been consigned to history, Emotional Rescue turn their attention towards Carl & Carol Jacobs' cult slice of early house music, and what a treat it is. "Yonge Street Jam Band" comes in the form of two mixes that serve as impeccable examples of late 80s club music in all its culture spanning glory. The playful sample slicing and triggering of the second mix is the winner, although the vocals on the original version are equally on point if you want a little more soul in the mix. Jonny 5 then steps up on the flip for a bold but measured re-rub that stretches the vibe out for nine minutes of perfect party fodder.

Review: Emotional Rescue's Miami groove revival continues with the latest instalment in their celebration of Konduko Records and the work of Noel 'King Sporty' Williams. Following the stellar "Rock Attack" and "Haven't Been Funked Enough" comes one of the strongest outings from The Ex Tras, "Do You Wanna Dance?" It's everything an early 80s Florida jam should be, all tough electro basslines, limber funk instrumentation and dubby touches in all the right places, not least on the instrumental version. Felix Dickinson comes on board for a "Discomix" that stretches the original out in all the right places for an extended pleasure ride through some of the best dance music to come out of the Sunshine State.

Review: Emotional Rescue do the right thing and tap up the Konduko label - an oft overlooked gem of the Miami bass scene - for one of the biggest tracks in Noel 'King Sporty' Williams' back catalogue. "Haven't Been Funked Enough" is an absolute battering ram of proto electro, staggeringly advanced for its time (it was originally released in 1982). There's also a "Rapstrumental" mix with some life-affirming instructive speech across the jam, but the real icing on the cake is Idjut Boy Nad's wild and ranging "Discomix" on the B side. It's a truly spaced out affair that sounds like it was mixed live on the desk with its rugged FX sends and woozy atmosphere.

Review: Emotional Rescue announces the second EP of music from one of the label's favourites as part of a non-defined series where two of their (un)classic songs are remastered, reappraised and reinterpreted with new versions by a contemporary artist for reinterpretation today.

Thomas Leer is a respected and revered musician in both experimental and electronic circles. Having moved from Scotland to London in the late 70s, he moved away from playing in punk based bands, to debut his self-financed 'Private Planes' 7" in 1978, before releasing the cult-album 'The Bridge', with Robert Rental, the following year.

Signing to Cherry Red, he released the heralded '4 Movements' in 1981 and followed with 'All About You' in 1982, and it is from these 2 EPs that this release is sourced. The release starts with Saving Grace from the latter, a long famous "Cosmic classic"; it's mid-tempo, spacey, lifting repetition is the perfect soundtrack for those Baldelli trips straight to the stars.

This is backed with Tight As A Drum, a quintessential Leer production, where Teutonic drums is overlaid with sequencers and synth tones to elevate the song to some kind of disorientating outer-dimensional dub, while his lucid, spoken word vocals instill degradation and reinvention.

Asking Bullion to offer his own take on these two songs was the perfect pairing. A revered artist in his own time, the warmth and depth of his versions takes the originals to his own inner world; sampling, rewiring, reprogramming, resigning and replaying. An EP for the floor, the head and the heart.

Review: Emotional Rescue make no attempt to hide their love of classic 80s cutters Razormaid's remixes, and on this occasion they're shining a light on the pumped up dancefloor versions of cult Canadian synthwave concern Psyche. The "US Club Mix" of "Eternal" is a perfect, swooning synth pop belter with weight in all the right places to work on the floor. "Prisoner To Desire (Alcatraz Mix)" is a snarling stomper that almost touches on acidic synth lines underneath the impassioned vocals, and then an exclusive re-edit of "Unveiling The Secret" ups the tempo while letting the catchy pop edge to Psyche's sound shine through. The record finishes with the fevered intensity of Joseph Watt's extended mix of "Ecstasy".

Review: Hailing from the mists of the early 90s UK techno scene, Ramjac Corporation's "Cameroon Massif!" epitomises everything great about the anything goes spirit of the scene prior to firm genre boundaries being established. Emotional Rescue have done the right thing and brought the vintage curio back to light, and what a return it is. While it shows its age, it sounds in fine fettle, all rolling breaks, trancey zaps and mysterious vocal hooks that positively draw you into a transcendental rave headspace. Both the "Massive" and "Massing" mixes are essential, but then you also get the added bonus of a live version from a reunion gig back in 2009.

Review: Emotional Rescue once more on the hard to find party curio tip, this time tapping up the work of one Ken Ramm whose 1984 burner "Spark The Universe" was previously fetching handsome prices online, and with good reason. The funk is loose and limber on the track, not least when it comes to the bassline and psyched-out worldly percussion. The dub mix pushes out into trippier territory, and then Emotional bossman Chuggy takes the reins on the flip for his own Disco mix of the original. Whichever version you plump for, you're onto a winner.

Review: Emotional Rescue and Mountains In The Sea are thrilled to team up to revive a lost rarity of American ambient music: Chris Spheeris and Paul Voudouris' 1982 album 'Passage'.

Living and recording in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Chris and Paul composed and released several albums of folk-rock and album-oriented synthpop before their attentions turned towards sound healing music in the early 1980s. The duo was approached by a company doing biofeedback therapy and asked to create an aural component for patients looking to regain control of nervous disorders. After extensive preparations and just one day of studio time, 'Passage' was the result, recorded live with no additional overdubs.

The LP consists of 3 long tracks which flow together as a single piece. Opener 'Prism' contains the album's most frenetic moments, glittering guitar and synth tones designed to draw the listener out of their distressed state. Next comes the soaring 'Mosaic', a renewing sunrise of warm chords that beckons slowly towards the album's summit, the over-20 minute title track which contains a sonic ecosystem of it's own. The album concludes in a state of pure serenity, in which the passage of time has seemed to slow to a halt, and the outside stresses of the world eradicated.

Over 3 decades since its initial conception, 'Passage' still retains all of its inestimable healing power, but remains incredibly difficult to find. It's an album that belongs in discussions of landmark early American ambient works, alongside names like Michael Stearns, Constance Demby, Kerry Leimer and Pauline Anna Strom. ER and MITS have worked with original cover artist Vinayak to render the album artwork as originally intended, in even greater detail than on its first release. We're overjoyed to be able to share this rare sensory experience with you.

Review: Emotional Rescue did the diggers another great service by gathering up the recorded material from Bordeaux synth-pop outliers Takenoko, and now they're sweetening the deal even further with this EP of wild style mixes from Dresden maverick Sneaker DJ. Picking three of the strongest tracks from the L'Amour Est Mon Arme collection, he comes up with three drastically diverse end results to suit the most adventurous selectors. The "Maquette" mix of "Lee Harvey Oswald" has a wonderfully lo-fi finish that accentuates the DIY new wave angles of Takenoko, while the "Traaans" mix of "Trans Amor Express" becomes a trippy, brittle beat excursion that should appeal to lovers of oddball 80s dub mixes. The "Dynamic" version of "John Wayne" finishes the record off in bombastic fashion, all boxy beats and powerful synth lines punching out underneath the quintessential wavey vocals.
