Review: Curren$y and The Alchemist first teamed up in 2010 for the Covert Coup album, which was reportedly recorded in full the first day they met. Alchemist has worked with all manner of high profile heads from Dilated Peoples and Ghostface Killah to Mobb Deep's Prodigy, Royce Da 5'9" and plenty more besides, but he's at his best working with New Orleans' Curren$y on these low slung jams. There's a wistful, soulful lilt to beats Alchemist conjures up like the Boldy James-featuring 'No Yeast', while Wiz Khalif and Havoc sound reflective on 'Corvette Rally Stripes'. This is hip-hop to sink into - one for mellow moments when you want the lyrics to soak in and the beats to take you far away.

Review: Mr. Money With The Vibe is the debut studio album from Nigerian singer Asake. Following an impressive debut and meteoric rise in the music industry, Asake signed with YBNL Nation, the label founded by one of the godfathers of modern Afrobeats, Olamide. The 12-track album features elements of traditional Nigerian fuji music, Afropop, and South African Amapiano and sees appearances from fellow Nigerian star Burna Boy and American rapper Russ. The results are an ethereal sonic oasis that clearly sets Asake apart from his peers. Includes the single, 'Sungba (Remix),' 'Peace Be Unto You (PBUY),' and 'Terminator.'

Review: Australian rapper Iggy Azalea's third album The End of An Era came on her own label Bad Dreams Records and took inspiration from the end of her 20s. It is a musical time capsule of that decade and features some guest spots from the likes of Bia, Sophia Scott and Ellise, while production was taken care of by frequent collaborator J. White Did It amongst others. The beats throughout are highly addictive with plenty of them ready to make you get up and dance. There are plenty of crossovers between future house and bass music making it one of her most accomplished works to date.

Review: Benny The Butcher has gone from red hot prospect to fully arrived talent. His newest album came last year with Hit-Boy on the production proving why he too is hot shit. The pair have crafted a real modern masterpiece here with plenty of authentic old school grit and grime but also a melodic edge and contemporary lyrical style that shines bright amongst its peers. There are laments like 'Famous' next to chest beating and big braggy tunes like 'Timeless' with Lil' Wayne & Big Sean as well as sweet and soulful standouts such as 'Thank God I Made It' with Queen Naija.

He started off deep in the underground and then rose through the ranks thanks to his undoubted skill and has gone on to achieve plenty of both commercial success and critical acclaim. He hails from Buffalo in New York and is a hugely prolific artist who has put out plenty of records and twice reached the Billboard Top 40 albums chart as an independent. Tana Talk 4 is his latest highly anticipated record and is sure to set him off to a super 2022. It features fine guest spots from Conway, Westside Gunn, 38 Spesh and more.

Review: BLK Odyssey's debut album BLK Vintage was a concept record about the triumphs and tragedies of being part of the black community. This Reprise version builds on that with guests such as George Clinton, Benny the Butcher, Mereba and Baby Ros. The tunes dive deep into the artist's inspirations and touches on subjects such as retaliation - from the perspective of both sides - as well as success for African American and much more. It's a classy hip-hop record with a very real narrative and superb production that is most often deep and steeped in a dark sense of soul.

(Extinction Level Event): The Final World Front, and has been received warmly by fans and critics alike. Guess such as Chris Rock, Pete Rock and Rakim, Ol' Dirty Bastard from beyond the grave and Rich Ross as well as Anderson .Paak all add weight but none detract from the main man himself as his spits in fine flow over raw and rugged beats.

Review: Conway the Machine, the Griselda MC and CEO of Drumwork Music had fans waiting on tenterhooks for the arrival of his new album and when it dropped, Won't He Do It certainly did not disappoint. Producer and longtime collaborator Daringer worked on the album with him and the bars are raw, unapologetic and full of insight into street life. His own rags to riches journey is at the centre of the narrative, as is the loyalty he has towards his team. Plenty of his Drumwork associates feature as do top names like Benny The Butcher, Westside Gunn, Fabolous and Dave East to make for a vital new album that sits at the heart of the modern hip hop landscape.

Review: Curren$y aka the Hot Spitta built up plenty of anticipation for The Drive In Theatre Part 2. It was his third release in a rather epic year back in 2022 and is part of an ongoing fan favourite series hat now finally makes its way on to vinyl. It's a 21 track work with beats made by, amongst others, Kino Beats, Trauma Tone, Harry Fraud and Cookin Soul. Other guests include Rob49, Fendi P, Dash, URA, Blu, I'sis, Premo Rice, and Jade Angelle. It makes for a smooth jazz-rap listen with succulent drums and synths that work in a number of different settings. Once again the album asserts Curren$y to be one of the best out there right now.

Review: Louisiana rapper Curren$y's first project of 2021 is this 10-track album, Collection Agency. It is his 11th solo record overall and yet the quality remains high despite so much output. This time out the wordsmith links with various high profile producers for the beats including Purps, DJ Fresh, Harry Fraud, Rsonist of The Heatmakerz and Trauma Tone. It might last under 30 minutes but this is a killer collection of contemporary hip hop that is run through with the bright, futuristic aesthetic of trap, but maintains nice classic hip-hop beats that get you bumping.

Review: On his first full-length for two years, southern hip-hop veteran Devin The Dude has decided to take a decidedly deep, soulful and hazy approach. Beginning with a dash of impeccable hip-hop soul ('Soulful Distance'), the Houston-raised artist - accompanied on numerous occasions by guest rappers and vocalists including Big Pokey, Lil' Keke, Tony Mac, 14K, Scarface and Slim Thug - adds his lusciously layback raps and effortlessly soulful singing to similarly slow, head-nodding beats smothered in warming instrument samples and some seriously good bass. Lyrically, the Texan is in fine form throughout, offering the kind of mature, conscious rhymes that you'd expect from an emcee who has seen it all during his 51 years on Earth.

Review: Calling yourself Dinner Party is brave move given the negative connotations associated with music designed for that particular context. But this crew break the mould, and we knew they would, because with a lineup featuring 9th Wonder, Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper and Terrace Martin, how could they not? It was back in 2020 when they came together to serve up some essential hip hop sounds that draw on funk, jazz and soul in fine contemporary fashion. Two years later the record still hits the mark with the help of some fine guests spots from the likes of Malaya & Phoelix, Herbie Hancock, Cordae and even Snoop Dogg.

Review: As any fans of smoochy neo-soul will know, Dinner Party is something of a super group. It is made up of the masterful contemporary talents of Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, and 9th Wonder and is like a modern answer to the Soul Aquarians back in the neo-soul heyday. This is a CD version of their Enigmatic Society album which is a deeper, warmer work than their self-titled earlier work. Jazz and hip-hop and some great samples all get fused into sublime sounds for late night grooving and smooching and make it another essential outing from these musical powerhouses.

Review: Free Nationals are of course best known as the live band for Anderson .Paak, but their debut album tries to set them apart on their own musical terms. The future retro, funky and soulful sound that denies their monstrous rise with Paak still abounds here, however. Guests, including Syd, Kali Uchi and the late Mac Miller, all help add character and a melange of rock-riffs and trap vocals, smooth r&b stylings and genre-bending moments of bliss also make this an interesting and innovative affair. While The Free Nationals may struggle to ever hit the heights they do with their front man, this is a damn fine effort.

Gangsta (instrumental)
Review: Fresh, hot-off-the-plate yet classic-sounding gangsta rap from the collaboration of Free Nationals, Anderson .Paak and A$AP Rocky. 'Gangsta' flips the script of the genre, lyrically examining the hip-hop genre's historical obsession with gangsters, while more avowedly narrating the story of a 'wangsta' whose wannabe proclamations of realness have no match for Rocky and .Paak's authentic intuitions, owing to their true-blood, inherited street knowledge. It's a fresh, empowering new move from the LA-based hip-hop group, whose sound evinces a well-produced, jazz-flavoured and Dilla-eqsue wonk come clarity of sound, as ever.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve, product unopened & in excellent condition***

Free Nationals are of course best known as the live band for Anderson .Paak, but their debut album tries to set them apart on their own musical terms.

Review: Free Nationals released their debut album back in 2018. The LA-formed R&B collective comprised of Jose Rios, Ron "T.Nava" Avant, Kelsey Gonzales and Callum Connor are best known as being the backing band for Anderson .Paak but also make grooves just as tight on their own. This debut was packed with top guests such as .Paak himself as well as Mac Miller and Kali Uchis and it was nominated for Best Progressive R&B Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. It mixes up classic R&B with twists of funk and soul greats like Stevie Wonder.

Review: We're still getting to grips with 2000, Joey Badass' much-loved return to the mixtape format timed 10 years after his breakthrough, 1999. Given the shockwaves still felt by the latter, it's only right it gets a fresh airing for the crowd only just getting hip to Badass' take on the US rap tradition. This debut release shot Badass to notoriety thanks to his own skills, not to mention the heavyweight contributions from the likes of Chuck Strangers, MF DOOM, J Dilla and Lewis Parker. With one foot in the true-skool sound of hip-hop, Badass delivered something remarkable on his calling card, now lovingly repressed for your listening pleasure.

Review: Rapper Larry June teams up with the prolific producer Cardo for a fresh dream-teamed, tinted-windowed beguiler, The Night Shift. Decidedly nocturnal in feel, this album spans hip-hop's moodiest, most crepuscular cross-section into r&b and night-drive music; it's also a guided, chauffeured tour of June's early life, taking scenic detours down his many most personal memory lanes. With a laid-back flow acting as a vocal guide through June's native San Francisco, this is one of the vibiest hip-hop releases you're likely to hear all year.

Review: Bay Area wordsmith Larry June has been racking up numbers on the West Coast scene since his debut mixtape 'Good Job, Larry' back in 2015. His latest release 'Spaceships On The Blade' is a neat take on both classic West Coast hip-hop and cloudy lackadaisy. With his signature laid-back flow, Larry brings a positive energy to his lyrics, rapping about hustle, personal economic growth, and consumer culture, not to mention a lyrical fascination with spacecraft that gives the impression that this is an artist who prefers to go with the flow; one who likes to sit back and let the future unfold.

Review: San Francisco rapper Larry June has been on an upward curve since breaking through some six years ago with his Orange Season EP, and now he's coming correct with his future-classic album Orange Print. It's a flexible twist on modern rap which can nod to boogie and old-skool hip-hop tropes as much as crisp trap, with June's cool and deadly flow riding over the top. The guests on the album include heavyweights like Money Man, Trae The Truth and Dej Loaf, but really this is June's party and we're all invited. Try dropping 'Escrow And Orange Juice' and not being transported to Cali in a heartbeat.

Review: The Alchemist and Larry June say they 'followed what felt natural' when writing this one and the results are organic and absorbing. This is the CD version of the pair's new album which finds them combine forces for this smoother than silk outing on Empire that brings the best out of both. The Alchemist is a veteran producer who has worked with a who's who of hip-hop over the years, and June is a Bay Area rapper with a real touch of class to his work. He can rap about anything from gourmet food to art, teaching people how to hustle, or whatever else.

Review: Five-Time Grammy Award nominee Robin Thicke is back with his first new album in six years. The diamond-selling performer, actor and attractor of headlines about his attitudes to women's eighth album is full of the bold, right r&b tunes he ha made his name with. There are moments of quiet tenderness with gorgeous flutes and samba rhythms such as 'Out Of My Mind' and big hearted love songs like 'Lola Mia' with glossy production and golden sounds. Lead single 'That's What Love Can Do' has already seen big success and made it to #1 on the Urban A.C charts so expect to hear lots of this in summer and beyond.
