  3. Briony
Review: Something a little deeper from Fear Of Flying. BLM is going solo with "Gyms Are For Pussies". The original mix of the title track starts off as it means to go on, with the deep bass and warm but wonky pad setting the tone. Very delicious, especially made for those tripped out moments in the early hours of the morning. "Briony" is BLM's homage to legendary label Plastic City. The deep bass is employed in a different way this time, with vocal snippets supplied by occasional studio partner Marc Ashken. With warm pads and hypnotic grooves aplenty, this is just the tonic for those cold nights.

  1. BLM - "Garage Is Back" (Matthew Styles remix)
  2. Drake & Griffiths - "The Devil's Eyes" (BLM remix)
  3. BLM - "Garage Is Back" (vox)
Review: Having begun the New Year with the blink and you'll miss it rattle of Drake & Griffith's "Devils Eye's" - notable for a great remix from newcomer Bleak - Fear Of Flying revisit that track and another of their recent highlights on this sleekly presented twelve inch. Matthew Styles takes on the dusted vocal minimalist handclap heavy simplicity of BLM's "Garage Is Back" on the A Side, slowing down the vocal from Suz and implementing a low hypnotic bass throb which lends the track a new kind of energy - slightly menacing and more suited to a techno environment. On the flip, BLM remixes the aforementioned "Devils Eyes", retaining the Schatrax jack sensation of the original collaboration between the Peace Division and Tsuba dons, but flushes the surroundings with a raft of reverberating and slightly dystopian sonic textures.

Cat: FOF001. Rel: 14 Oct 06
Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Break Up
  2. Break Up (Jeff Samuel remix)
  3. Silent Sleeper
  4. Oxygen
Review: Fear Of Flying is new UK label which will be showcasing a large range of music from minimal to house to techno and everything in between. The first release comes from new talent, in house producer and part label owner BLM and the up and coming Marc Ashken (Leftroom, Safari Electronique). First up is the eerie 'Break up', which builds slowly into a haunting melody with the dark twisted pads keeping the dancefloor moving nicely. Stateside talent Jeff Samuel provides 'Break Up' with one of his trademark style remixes, taking the original and turning it into a jackin, uptempo dancefloor groove with a metalic sounding riff providing the dancefloor dirt. The B-side's 'Silent Sleeper' takes the minimal route with its slow building groove. The middle of this track is where it really starts to get going with its razor sharp snare injecting the track with a tough dancefloor feel. 'Oxygen' is last up, this time taking a deeper, house approach with moody pads and atmospherics.

Deep House
  1. Take Me Away (Schatrax remix)
  2. Take Me Away (original mix)
  3. Take Me Away (BLM remix)
  4. Tell Them Phill Sent Ya
Review: The seventh release on Fear of Flying's ltd offshoot dealing in the deeper end of the house spectrum sees recent Leftroom and Visionquest contributors Burton and Lawson team up for a clutch of tracks which will only boost their ascendency in the production ranks. "Take Me Away'" is all about the melancholic chords that shimmer across the delicate pads, augmented by faint strains of field recordings demonstrating that the duo have the talent to slip outside the confines of main room deepness. FOF alumni Schatrax and BLM step up to remix the track, with the former adding more tension to the groove, whilst the FOF label slips into expansive dub mode on the flip. Some liveliness is introduced on the final, loose limbed jack attack that is "Tell Them Phill Sent Ya".

Review: Skudge maintain their firm grip on the title of .Sweden's best mysterious techno duo' with this throbbing remix of Cally's "Wake Oops!" on Fear Of Flying. An old school kickdrum works behind a looped up groove and hi-hats for a frankly awesome late night club jam. The B-Side contains two Cally originals: first up is the rolling disco funk undertone of "Gud Gioc", while the more introspective electronica of "Wake Oops!" will please the heads down brigade immensely.

Review: Dadableep present a ten minute monster that is "Ghipwe". Solid kicks and percussion lead up to the first break with it's tranced up riff taking things up high before slamming in with a truly phat and filthy bassline. Expect much dancefloor madness from this Fear Of Flying release.

Deep House
  1. The Devil's Eyes (Christopher Rau remix)
  2. The Devil's Eyes (original)
  3. The Devil's Eyes (Bleak's Bete Noire remix)
Review: Justin Drake from Peace Division teams up again with Canadian Tsuba artist Kevin Griffiths for some throwback jacking techno business on Fear Of Flying. "The Devil's Eye" begins in quite simple fashion, dropping dubbed stabs over a booming kick; it's when the driving warm bass hits that you're hooked. From here the duo etch out a mid 90s Schatrax jacking groove which locks in for the duration. Smallville's Christopher Rau and newcomer Bleak are called on to remix the track, with the former retaining the jacking beats though twisting them towards something approaching deep house, with some gloriously warm pads rising to the fore as the track progresses. In contrast Bleak reimagines the track as a dark stomp through the machinations of peak time techno punctuated by a reverberant rhythmic thrust akin to the tracks on his debut for Sudden Drop.

Techno
  1. Ethyl & Flori - "The Last Ninja"
  2. Flori - "Fornjot"
Review: Ethyl seems to have dedicated his production career to date to collaborations; every one of his eight singles has been penned with a studio partner. Here, he once again teams up with regular sidekick Flori for a first outing on Fear of Flying. As usual, there's much to admire across the two tracks. "The Last Ninja" is particularly enjoyable, sounding like a long lost Detroit techno classic after a night on anti-depressants - all rolling rhythms, fizzing cymbals, fluid riffs and sun-bright melodies. "Fornjot" flips the script slightly but keeps the positivity factor high, thanks in no small part to some loose-but-loopy synth refrains and an unfussy, kick-heavy groove.

Techno
  1. Mint (Soul Capsule Ocean Drive remix)
  2. Liberal (Bluetrain special edition dub)
Review: Scoring some remixers with serious clout, the rapid rise of Fear Of Flying mainstay Roger Gerressen receives a serious compliment from the label here as his Liberal release gets revisited in fine style. First up Soul Capsule bring their signature sublime swing to "Mint" for a seductive deep house cut that pivots on a woozy chord swell and layers of finely woven vocal samples with that attention to detail you expect from the pair. Then on the flip Steve O'Sullivan gets into his Bluetrain guise for an achingly deep dub excursion into "Liberal" that plies the tension in between the pregnant echoes of chord and impeccably chiselled beats.

  3. Drunk Game (feat Smokin' G)
Review: With a sudden swell of imaginative house and techno releases around him, Roger Gerressen returns to Fear Of Flying after appearing just last month with more of his smoky styles. "Liberal" plies a dubby trade in slender chords, ticking along at a slow but steady pace and somehow worming a processed funk into the broth at the same time. "Mint" is a more slippery devil, whipping up complex drum machine patterns in a minimal stylee over which strange speech samples can flutter. "Drunk Game" is an easier prospect, skipping as it does on a lazy swing for some low-slung warm-up goodness of the highest order, with Smokin' G's drawl melding nicely into the mix.

"Spookhaus" is a great Fear Of Flying release.

Review: Leif consolidates years of EP releases for Ornate, Boe, Morris Audio, Fina with a considered debut album Dinas Oleu for the Fear Of Flying label. It makes sense for the Freerotation resident to choose FOF given the strong association he's built up with the label since it first emerged some seven years ago. From the hazy ambience of the opening vignette "Through Noise Pt 1" Leif works his way through a succession of house and techno moods all rich in the sort of detail and melodic warmth that will be familiar to anyone that's indulged in his 12" output. Keep an ear out for the title cut too which features the harp playing talents of poppa Knowles.

Review: The revival in fortunes of former Bent producer Nail began in earnest this year with the Ode Rammel EP of classic cuts that Fear Of Flying released back in February, and following further full EPs for Airdrop, Shabby Doll and Robsoul the man born as Niall Tolliday returns to FOF as part of their latest vinyl only excursion. The chunky, roughed up "Glazed" originates from the same time period as Nail's Fear Of Flying debut but is unreleased, having been found gathering dust on a DAT tape - more of this please Nail. Complementing this, Undersound resident Harry McCanna showcases his production prowess with "Act 1" which is dominated by a subtle yet powerful bassline, whilst the flip sees Romanian producer Zece mix delay laden vox with gritty breakbeat rhythms on the stripped down "Nephew". Sonodab's self titled closer dips into the deepest realms of melodic electro - this one has set opener written all over it.

It is very fx heavy, with wibbles, whoosh's and tripped out noises aplenty. One for the 'hazy' moments on the dancefloor, with it's hypnotic groove bound to lock them in until the early hours. This Fear Of Flying release is amazing.
